Developing Children’s Persistence (毅力)
One of the most important lessons a child can learn is not to give up when faced with a challenging situation, but instead to continue and overcome it.
Invention education
As the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects continues to grow due to the world’s increasing complexity (复杂性), invention education has become a popular way for children to explore these fields in pleasant ways.
At Camp Invention, there are no “right” or “wrong” ways to complete each day’s set of challenges and activities. Those who take part in it are able to seek solutions that naturally interest them. For example, campers learn how to change their cars to travel across the land, and create basic theory that could help them move through the air and even underwater by using the same method shared by some of the world’s most well-known inventors!
The Innovation (创新) Mindset
Working with our national innovators whose discoveries continue to improve the lives of people everywhere, we have recognized nine basic skills that can benefit children throughout their lives. We call this the Innovation Mindset, and it influences the development of all our education programmes.
Persistence is a very important part of the Innovation Mindset because it teaches children to recover from setbacks and overcome difficulties to reach their goals. Because our programmes develop determination through a “create, test and retest” way of learning, students build the strength and confidence to take on any challenges that stand in their way.

“I am not crazy” says Dr. William Farber, shortly after performing acupuncture (针灸) on a rabbit. “I am ahead of my time.” If he seems a little defensive, it might be because even some of his coworkers occasionally laugh at his unusual methods. But Farber is certain he’ll have the last laugh. He’s one of a small but growing number of American veterinarians (兽医) now practicing “holistic” medicine-combining traditional Western treatments with acupuncture, chiropractic (按摩疗法) and herbal medicine.
Farber, a graduate of Colorado State University, started out as a more conventional veterinarian. He became interested in alternative treatments 20 years ago when he suffered from terrible back pain. He tried muscle-relaxing drugs but found little relief. Then he tried acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice, and was amazed that he improved after two or three treatments. What worked on a veterinarian seemed likely to work on his patients. So, after studying the techniques for a couple of years, he began offering them to pets.
Leigh Tindale’s dog Charlie had a serious heart condition. After Charlie had a heart attack Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber’s treatments eased her dog’s suffering so much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months. And Priscilla Dewing reports that her horse, Nappy, “moves more easily and rides more comfortably” after a chiropractic adjustment.
Farber is certain that the holistic approach will grow more popular with time, and if the past is any indication, he may be right: Since 1982, membership in the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association has grown from 30 to over 700. “Sometimes it surprises me that it works so well,” he says. “I will do anything to help an animal. That’s my job.”
4. What do some of Farber’s coworkers think of him?
A. He’s odd. B. He’s strict. C. He’s brave. D. He’s rude.
5. Why did Farber decide to try acupuncture on pets?
A. He was trained in it at university. B. He was inspired by another veterinarian.
C. He benefited from it as a patient. D. He wanted to save money for pet owners.
6. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Steps of a chiropractic treatment. B. The complexity of veterinarians’ work.
C. Examples of rare animal diseases. D. The effectiveness of holistic medicine.
7. Why does the author mention the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association?
A. To prove Farber’s point. B. To emphasize its importance.
C. To praise veterinarians. D. To advocate animal protection.

Excessive behavior (过激行为) by some parents at youth sports events, such as shouting at referees (裁判员), is causing concern. Although such incidents are not frequent, they are severe enough to significantly impact staff in high schools. A new study by the National Federation of State High School Associations revealed that 75% of high school referees quit due to this type of behavior in the United States.
“Sometimes parents are putting a lot of pressure on their child by shouting at referees. That can create a negative environment,” sports doctor Dr. Soma explains. “Sometimes parents even go so far as to sign their child up for a sport that they don’t want to join. Such behaviors erode children’s enjoyment of a sport, eventually causing them to leave the sport they once loved.”
Sports doctor Dr. Soma says most parents want to guide their children to happiness and success. But sometimes, they lose sight of what is truly important. Instead of focusing on their child’s interest and pleasure, they pay too much attention to the outcome of competitions. As a result, a child simply walks away from all the fun and physical, social, and mental health benefits that they can get from playing a sport. “Parents want the best for their children,” says Dr. Soma, “but it is also not uncommon for parents to try to realize their dreams through their kids — not just in sports, but in many fields.”
Dr. Max R. Trenerry from the Mayo Clinic suggests that parents should support their children in sports by being a safety net rather than pushing them too hard. This means helping kids build good sports habits, letting them talk about their games in their own way, and choose when and how they compete, and making sure they feel part of a team. Parents should teach their kids that sports are not just about winning but also about teamwork and growth.
8. What does the new study focus on?
A The effect of parents’ excessive behavior.
B. Reasons for parents shouting at referees.
C The significance of youth sports events.
D. The causes of high school teachers quitting.
9. What does the underlined word “erode” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Reflect. B. Reduce. C. Protect. D. Improve.
10. According to Dr. Soma, parents should pay attention to _______.
A the outcome of important competitions
B. the ways of building children’s sports habits
C. children’s passion for sports
D. children’s physical health
11. What is Dr. Max R. Trenerry’s suggestion for parents?
A. Encouraging kids to attempt multiple sports.
B. Teaching kids practical skills in person.
C. Accompanying kids to join the competitions.
D. Providing supportive guidance for kids.

If humanity ever goes extinct, researchers at the University of Southampton now have a backup plan: a coin-sized memory crystal (晶体) storing the entire human genome (基因组). They hope it could serve as a blueprint for reviving (复苏) our species thousands, millions or even billions of years into the future.
At its largest size, the crystal can store up to 360 TB of data, which is over 5,000 times more than a typical iPhone, without losing for billions of years. It can resist extreme temperatures, from freezing to fires, reaching up to 1000°C, and survive direct impact forces of up to 10 tons per cm², as well as long exposure to cosmic radiation. At room temperature, the crystal can remain stable for 300 quintillion years, according to Guinness World Records — more than 21 billion times the current age of the universe.
The crystal is stored in the Memory of Mankind archive (档案), a time capsule within a salt cave in Austria for now. To help whoever finds it, the researchers included a visual key. However, other researchers are unconvinced that a future civilization could bring humanity back from this crystal. “What Southampton presents probably has a higher stability,” says Thomas Heinis, a researcher and DNA storage expert at Imperial College London. “But how will they know how to read the crystal or build the device to read the crystal?” he adds, “I can barely connect my ten-year-old iPod and listen to what I listened to back then.”
However, these genomic memory crystals may have other uses. “The technology also opens up possibilities for other researchers to build an ark (诺亚方舟) of genomic information from which complex organisms like plants and animals might be restored if science in the future would allow,” says lead researcher Peter Kazansky, a professor at the University of Southampton. “This could help preserve the DNA of species threatened with extinction due to climate change and other human-related activities.”
12. What is the memory crystal expected to do?
A. Predict disasters on Earth.
B. Bring humans back from extinction.
C. Record the evolution of endangered species.
D. Preserve animal genomes for future research.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the crystal?
A. Its cost and materials. B. Its capacity and endurance
C. Its usage and significance. D. Its size and weight.
14. What concerns Thomas Heinis?
A. The future civilization’s ability to read the crystal.
B. The storage space of the crystal.
C. The crystal’s stability in resisting destruction.
D. The possibility of finding the visual key.
15. Why does the author mention Peter Kazansky’s words in the last paragraph?
A. To present the necessity of gene conservation efforts.
B. To state the urgency of dealing with environmental issues.
C. To reveal the potential value of the new technology.
D. To stress the importance of exploring genomic information.

I didn’t like Del so much. He always called me the nickname “Germy”, which meant “dirty”, instead of my real name “Jamie”. Besides, he was known as a trouble-maker in school. So when the head teacher Mr. Smith asked Del to come to his office, I naturally thought that Del had done something mean to someone. Through the window, I caught sight of a smaller boy crying. Del seemed unhappy, too.
He did not return to class that day. All of us were discussing what had happened to him. What else could such an annoying boy do? “He must have hit the boy and was sent home,” I whispered to my friends. Their eyes widened. It felt good to see them so interested in what I said.
The next morning, the whole school was talking about Del being expelled(开除) for beating up a kid. I was surprised that my assumptions were passed on so quickly. So when Del walked into the classroom, all the kids were shocked. The kids next to him shift ed their desks away. “What’s your problem?” Del asked. “I don’t want you to attack me,” one kid said. Some laughed. “Yeah, I might,” said Del. I could tell he was joking, but many kids thought he admitted he did beat up someone.
During recess(课间休息), Del tried to join the kickball game. “Neither team wants you,” one of the players said. “Why?” Del asked, looking confused. “I always play with you guys.” They ignored him and went on playing. Del sat by himself while the rest of the school enjoyed their recess away from him. Del looked lonely and sad, much different from before. I started to feel sorry for him.
Later that day, I learned what really happened. The kid was Del’s little brother and he was crying because their mother fell ill and was sent to hospital. I felt even sorrier for what I said before. I started a rumor(谣言).
注意:
At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game.

Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over.

“I am not crazy,” says Dr.
After Charlie had a heart attack, Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber’s treatments eased her dog’s suffering so much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months.
A 5. C 6. D 7. A

根据第二段的“Then he tried acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice, and was amazed that he improved after two or three treatments. What worked on a veterinarian seemed likely to work on his patients. So, after studying the techniques for a couple of years, he began offering them to pets.(然后,他尝试了针灸,这是一种古老的中国疗法,并惊讶地发现,经过两三次治疗,他的病情有所好转。对兽医有效的方法似乎对他的病人也有效。因此,在研究了这些技术几年后,他开始把它们提供给宠物。)”可知,Farber作为患者从针灸中受益,这促使他决定尝试在宠物上使用针灸。故选C。
【6题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段内容“Leigh Tindale’s dog Charlie had a serious heart condition. After Charlie had a heart attack, Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber’s treatments eased her dog’s suffering so much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months. And Priscilla Dewing reports that her horse, Nappy, “moves more easily and rides more comfortably” after a chiropractic adjustment.(利·廷代尔的狗查理患有严重的心脏病。

Excessive behavior (过激行) by some parents at youth sports events, such as shouting at referees (裁判员), is causing concern.
A. The effect of parents’ excessive behavior.
B. Reasons for parents shouting at referees.
C. The significance of youth sports events.
D. The causes of high school teachers quitting.
9. What does the underlined word “erode” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Reflect. B. Reduce. C. Protect. D. Improve.
10. According to Dr. Soma, parents should pay attention to _______.
A. the outcome of important competitions
B. the ways of building children’s sports habits
C. children’s passion for sports
D. children’s physical health
11. What is Dr. Max R. Trenerry’s suggestion for parents?
A. Encouraging kids to attempt multiple sports.
B. Teaching kids practical skills in person.
C. Accompanying kids to join the competitions.
D. Providing supportive guidance for kids.
A 9. B 10. C 11. D

B 13. B 14. A 15. C

故填has been seeking/has sought。

故填which。

注意:

Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game. Not wanting him to feel left out, I walked over and sat down beside him. “Hey Germy,” he said. “My name is Jamie.” I replied. I wanted to apologize for starting that rumor about him, but I was too ashamed to say it out loudly. “Del, do you want to play kickball with us?” I asked instead. He looked surprised but happy at the same time. After a moment of silence, he nodded his head.
Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over. I stood up and shouted to the other kids, “Guys, come here! Let’s play kickball together! ” Some of them hesitated, but they eventually joined us. Del was smiling again and so were we. As we played, I realized that Del wasn’t as bad as I thought he was. He was just a normal kid who wanted to have fun and be accepted by others. From then on, whenever someone tried to start a rumor about him, I would stand up for him and tell them the truth about Del. We became good friends, and I learned an important lesson about judging people based on rumors.
