It was a fine summer afternoon. Sam was going home from school. He walked along the road slowly, looking at the cover of a book from time to time. Sam had spent all his money on the book. He liked it very much. When he came to the high road, there was a blind man, holding out his hat and said, “I haven’t eaten anything since yesterday. Please give me some money. Soon after, a fine car came up and stopped, and out of it came Harry and his mother. The blind man still stood there and held out his hat. “Let us give the poor man something,” said Harry to his mom. His mother found some coins (硬币) in her bag and passed them to him. However, Harry did not put them into the man’s hat. He threw them onto the ground near the poor man. When I was a kid, school trips were a way to learn outside and set a better relationship between classmates and teachers in a more relaxed way than in the classroom. I’m glad to say I found similar exciting moments as a teacher here in China.
The earliest trip I remember from childhood was to the Ferry Meadows woods in my home city of Peterborough, England. We went looking for animal marks, berries and plants with what we had learned. I loved finding different kinds of flowers most. Our school took us to the theater and even Disneyland in Paris!
When I worked as an English teacher in China, it was great to see I could take my students on similar educational trips and cultural experiences. My first China trip with my students was to search holes in mountains. I firstly taught them some new words about mountain-research. Another was to the Temple of Heaven (天坛) in Beijing when it was snowing. We had an English lesson in the Temple of Heaven out in the snow! But the best one was a week-long drama (戏剧) trip all about Harry Potter. We played drama games and the students acted scenes from the movie. We had drama clothes, wigs (假发), wands (魔杖) and magic tricks. They learned a lot of ways to talk about the magical world. On the last day of the trip, as soon as the children finished their shows, we went on to the Universal Studios (环球影院)!
