“When you laugh, you change and when you change, the whole world changes around you,” said Dr Madan Kataria.
World Laughter Day is an annual celebration that takes place all over the world, to raise awareness about the many healing(治愈) benefits of laughter. The event is celebrated on the first Sunday of May each year, and in 2024, it is on May 5th.
World Laughter Day was first celebrated in 1998 by Dr Madan Kataria. He was inspired to start the Laughter Yoga movement by the facial feedback hypothesis. According to this hypothesis, a person’s facial expressions can have a direct effect on their emotions. World Laughter Day is celebrated to promote world peace and build a global awareness of brotherhood and friendship through laughter. The first “World Laughter Day” took place in Mumbai, India, on 1lth of January 1998.
Laughter Clubs, which are free and open to all, are groups of people who regularly gather to practise simple laughter techniques that promote wellness and positivity. These clubs are typically led by a trained Laughter Yoga instructor, and the events usually last between 30 — 45 minutes.
Every year on World Laughter Day, hundreds of people gather worldwide to laugh together at Public parks, big squares or stadiums in their city by laughter club members, their families and friends. They have a variety of amusement programmes like music dance and laughter contests, etc. People with most infectious, natural and effortless laughter are the winners. During this day in India, laughter club members often do peace march. After walking some distance, they stop to do a few Laughter Yoga exercises and then move on. At the end of the march, they laugh together for 10 minutes or so and then read Dr Kataria’s message for World Peace.

The 24 solar terms (节气) originated and was firstly used in China. It was created thousands of years ago on the basis of practical needs of agriculture. Ancient Chinese people used it to guide agriculture production, special climate signs and even healthy living tips. The 24 solar terms was added to UNESCO’s world cultural heritage list in 2016.Now, it has been brought to life thanks to a creative designer from Southwest China’s Guizhou Province.
On the eve of the Qingming Festival, Shi Changhong released (发布) his version of reproduced and packaged characters for each solar term in the form of “moving art” of Gifs. Since their first release on Zcool on March 29, the Gifs have won great praise among the general public and quickly flooded social media with millions of hits during the festival period.
To maximize publicity, Shi released his work in three forms: video, animation and picture. The background sounds add to the brilliance.
“When I watch the short video, I can strongly feel the Chinese style elements hidden in them. And it is really cool to liven up Chinese traditional culture in such a unique way,” WeChat user Xiao Feifei said.
“It is really a comfort to me to see so many people like my latest work. To be honest, it would really surprise me if the work does not arouse great interest among Chinese people. The 24 solar terms is a deeply rooted concept that covers the essence of Chinese wisdom. However, only a small portion of people know all the names or the correct order of those terms. My intention is to increase Chinese people’s self-awareness to learn more about our traditional fine culture. Actually, the 24 solar terms work is only a part of my whole design program ‘Charm China’, which I started over a year ago,” Shi told China Daily.

Researchers say they’ve used cutting-edge gravitational wave research to cast new light on a mystery — a 2000-year-old computer, the Antikythera mechanism found in shipwreck.
Well over a century after its discovery, researchers at the University of Glasgow say they’ve used statistical modeling techniques, originally designed to analyze gravitational waves — ripples in spacetime caused by major events in the universe such as two black holes combining —to suggest that the Antikythera mechanism was likely used to track the Greek lunar year. In short, it’s a fascinating collision between modern-day science and the mysteries of an ancient artifact.
In a 2021 paper, researchers found that previously discovered and regularly spaced holes in a “calendar ring” were marked to describe the “motions of the sun, moon, and all five planets known in ancient Greeks and how they were displayed at the front as an ancient Greek universe.” Now, in a new study published in the Official Journal of the British Horological Institute, University of Glasgow gravitational wave researcher Graham Woan and researchassociate Joseph Bayley suggest that the ring was likely perforated (打孔)with 354 holes, which happens to be the number of days in a lunar year.
The team used statistical models derived from gravitational wave research, a large-scale physics experiment designed to measure ripples in spacetime millions of light-years from Earth and Bayesian analysis, a technique using probability to quantify uncertainty based on incomplete data, to calculate the likely number of holes in the mechanism using the positions of the surviving holes and the placement of the ring’s surviving six fragments.
Surprisingly, the inspiration for the study came from a YouTuber Chris Budiselic, who has been attempting to physically recreate the ancient mechanism and investigating ways to determine just how many holes it contained.
“It’s a neat symmetry that we’ve adapted techniques we use to study the universe today to understand more about a mechanism that helped people keep track of the heavens nearly two millennia ago,” Woan said.
“We hope that our findings about the Antikythera mechanism, although less supernaturally spectacular than those made by Indiana Jones, will help deepen our understanding of how this remarkable device was made and used by the Greeks,” Woan sadded.
12. What was the original purpose of the statistical modelingtechniques?
A. To study the Antikythera mechanism. B. To investigate ancient artifacts.
C. To track the Greek lunar year. D. To analyze gravitational waves.
13. How did the researchers calculate the likely number of holes in the mechanism?
A. By using statistical models and Bayesian analysis.
B. By observing the mechanism directly.
C. By asking YouTuber Chris Budiselic.
D. By observing the physical recreation of the mechanism.
14. The underlined term “Bayesian analysis” in paragraph 4 refer to a technique.
A to recreate an ancient mechanism.
B. to measure ripples in spacetime.
C. to calculate uncertainty based on insufficient data.
D. to calculate the positions of the surviving holes.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Modern science was ideally combined with an ancient artifact.
B. The Antikythera mechanism was discovered in a shipwreck.
C. The mystery of the Antikythera mechanism remains unsolved.
D. Gravitational wave research revealed the Antikythera mechanismt.

Throughout life, we come across many people who impact us in a way. Their impact can be for a day or for a lifetime. It’s common not to recognize the impact someone has left on you until a certain moment. The person who left a great impact on me is my dad.
Three months after turning fourteen, my life was great. I was getting settled into a high school; my grades were already starting off greatly and I was making friends.
One day as I came home from school, I walked into the living room, finding my mom and dad talking. My parents turned to me and told me to sit down because there was something important they had to tell me. I soon found out that my dad’s liver was failing and he needed an immediate transplant. I was shocked and confused because my dad seemed fine. He was working and never looked sick. My parents told me not to worry because everything would be fine. Four months had passed and my dad still had not received a new liver ; he was progressively getting worse. His body seemed to be getting weaker, but he constantly said he was fine.
It was getting hard for my family and me. My dad had to quit his job leaving my mom to be the only provider. I had to take on the responsibility of cleaning the house, cooking meals and checking on my dad while my mom was at work. I had to cut back on hanging with my friends because my dad was beginning to go in and out of the hospital. My focus for school was starting to slip. So were my grades. Two nights before my school spring break, my mom received a call from the hospital that my dad had been in a car accident and that he was in hospital. Surprisingly, my dad hadn’t received a scratch on him. Then next night my mom received a call from the doctor stating that there was a liver that matched my dad’s body and that he needed to get to the hospital immediately.

Laughter has been shown to have numerous physical and mental health benefits including reducing stress and improving overall well-being.

“We hope that our findings about the Antikythera mechanism although less supernaturally spectacular than those made by Indiana Jones, will help deepen our understanding of how this remarkable device was made and used by the Greeks,” Woan sadded.
A. to recreate an ancient mechanism.
B. to measure ripples in spacetime.
C. to calculate uncertainty based on insufficient data.
D. to calculate the positions of the surviving holes.

【答案】My parents and I rushed to the hospital. After various examinations, my father was rushed into the operating room, leaving my mother and me a big smile from which we read the word FINE. Three hours’ waiting seemed like a lifetime during which my mother kept comforting me by saying “Your dad said everything will be just fine!” The time when the door opened and out came a smiling doctor who informed us the good news, my mother burst into tears. Three weeks later my father was able to be out of the hospital but he still needed special care at home which was a responsibility of me because my mother had to work all day outside.
I had to take on so many responsibilities at home. Housework and the care for my father took up most of the day, leaving little time for my study. But everyday my father told me the same thing “Honey, everything will be just fine!” Six months later, my father was fully recovered and four years later I graduated as a top student. Time took away so many happy moments of my family but left us something most important “Honey, everything will be just fine!”
