I am a plastic bottle. A week ago, I was on a supermarket shelf. I had a normal life, the same as all my brothers and sisters—other bottles full of water. I felt really happy.
Then a tall woman picked me up and put me in her basket! The woman took me home and put me in the fridge. It was cold, but I soon made friends with the cans and bottles in it. However, only a few hours later, she took me out of the fridge and drank the water inside me. Then she threw me into a litter bin. I have never felt so empty and alone in my life.
Early the next morning, a man took me out of the litter bin. He threw me and the other rubbish into the back of a truck. There were so many terrible smells. Then I was pushed together with the rest of the rubbish. Soon I was completely flat (扁平的). I cannot believe how thin I became.
I slept for a while. When I woke up, I found myself in a terrible place. Everything around me was ugly and had nasty smells. I felt afraid. I kept hoping that I would be moved somewhere else.
Then huge trucks came and covered us with a lot of soil. I asked another bottle what would happen to us. He said that we would never leave this crowded place, but would have to stay here for thousands of years.
“Why can’t they reuse or recycle us?” I cried.

When visitors came to see Sherlock Holmes in Baker Street, they often did surprising things.Sometimes they put their heads in their hands and cried. Sometimes they talked and talked, and couldn't stop. And sometimes they just sat there and didn't say a word. But nobody was more surprising than Dr Huxtable.
He was a large man, tall, well-dressed. He came into the room, walked to one of the big chairs, and suddenly fell into it. He sat there, with his eyes closed, looking pale and ill.
Holmes looked in the man's pockets and found a train ticket from Mackleton, in the north of England. "Meckleton-that's a long way, "said Holmes,"Its not twelve o'clock yet, so he probably let home before five o'clock this morning. He was probably hungry."
After a minute or two, the man began to move, and his eyes opened. A second later, he stood up. His face was now red and unhappy.
"M. Holmes, I am so sorry! I forgot to eat or drink anything this morning-that's why I felt ill. But I'm better now", said our visitor, "And Mr Holmes, come back to Mackleton with me by the next train, please!''
"I'm sorry, that's not possible" said Holmes,"I'm working on two important cases. I cannot leave London at the moment."
"Important cases!"our visitor cried, "But this case is important too. You know about the kidnapping of the son of the Duke(公爵) of Holderness e three days ago…"
"What! The Duke of Holdermesse?" I was shocked.
"Yes, that’s him. And he is one of the greatest men in the country." said Dr. Huxtable, "Mr. Holmes, The Duke is offering five thousand dollars for news of his son, and another one thousand dollars for the name of the kidnapper."
"That,"said Holmes, "is a most interesting offer."He looked at me, "Watson, I think we are going with Dr. Huxtable back to the north of England this afternoon."

Different weather makes people feel different. It has an effect(影响) on people’s health.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the south of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the north and mid-west, it is very hot sometimes and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather also has an effect on human intelligence. An experiment showed that the lQ(智商) of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their lQ was 10% down. The wind can help people have higher intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can lower it. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse grades on exams in the hottest months of the year (July and August).
The weather has a clear effect on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They may feel unhappy or awful during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. About eighteen degrees Celsius is the best temperature for all types of people.
Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful or unhappy today? Please check the weather

A fisherman and his family lived in a hut on a bank of the river near a village. Although they were poor, they lived a happy life. But they were worried that they could not teach their son, Roy, how to read or write. Neither could they send him to school.
One day, little Jordan visited Roy, hoping to play with him. He saw Roy drawing something on the ground with a piece of wood. Jordan asked what he was doing. “I am trying to write,” said little Roy. “But I don’t know how to write. I’m just trying to copy two words from a road sign. ” “If I could learn how to read and write, I would be the happiest boy in the world,” said Roy. “My father allows me an hour for myself every day. Now I’d like to spend this hour teaching you how to read and write,” said Jordan. Both Roy and his parents felt excited about Jordan’s offer.
From the next day on, Jordan started to teach Roy. Roy was quick to learn. After a few weeks, Roy knew how to read and write.
One afternoon, Mr. Rose found his son wasn’t around the house, so he went to the hut to ask his neighbours whether they had seen Jordan. To his surprise, he saw Jordan sitting at a table, holding a book, which Roy was reading aloud.

Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland is one of the most popular children’s books of all time. It tells the story of a young girl named Alice, who follows a rabbit entering a magic world, Wonderland.
The writer of the book is Lewis, the writer’s pen name. His real name was Charles. A story goes that one day Charles took a boat trip down the Thames River to have a picnic with three little girls. To keep the girls amused on the boat, he invented a story about fairies, in which Alice, the girl in the middle, was the main character. The girls felt funny about his fairy story.
After that, Charles wrote down the story and called it Alice’s Adventures under Ground. He gave it to Alice as a Christmas gift. At the same time, he sent a copy to his friend, George. George read it to his children and they were keen on it. George suggested Charles that he should turn his stories into a book. Charles then added more parts to the story until they made a thick storybook. The collection of fairy stories was first printed in 1866, with lots of fun drawings by George. The book became successful immediately.
One of its first fans was Queen ‘Victoria of England. She was very surprised that many parts of his stories were connected with Maths. In fact, Charles was a great mathematician.

On Earth Day, some people listen to speeches about the environment. Others help clean up their offices or save water and electricity at home. Your parents may even decide to take a day off from driving their cars.
The idea for Earth Day came from a US senator, who was worried about pollution and the health of plants and animals. And the idea quickly caught on. In 1970, the first Earth Day was celebrated. More than 20 million people in cities all over the US took part. Since then, Earth Day has been used to educate people about their role in taking care of our planet.

Mr. Brown lived in a house less than two miles from his office, so he was able to drive home every day for lunch. His wife was a good cook and he enjoyed the one-hour lunch time. But he had a problem. Every time he drove home at noon, he found at the road outside his house cars were parked, and there was no room for his own car. He had to drive somewhere else to park his car and then walked back. This made him very angry. He put up a board, which said, “No Parking” in the garden facing the road, but nobody seemed to take any notice of it. People obeyed a police notice, but not a private one. There were no parked cars where there was a blue board with white letters on it: POLICE NOTICE NO PARKING
Mrs. Brown suggested that he steal a police notice. He said he didn’t want to be caught. He was afraid of going to prison. She then suggested he make one just like a police notice. He said he was not the police and couldn’t use the word “police”. He decided to find a good way to solve the problem.
Several days later, Mr. Brown made a blue board with white letters: POLITE NOTICE NO PARKING

Dear Li Ying
Thanks for your letter. Now I want to tell you about the four seasons in Canberra. Spring in Canberra lasts for three months, from September to November. I love the spring here. The trees in the street have lots of small white flowers and the weather is nice. At the beginning of spring, it is cool and sometimes rains. At the end of spring, the weather is warmer.
It is often dry and hot in the middle of summer. Sometimes we have four or five days at 45°C! Our summer holiday starts at the beginning of December and ends at the beginning of February. I go swimming every day .We usually go to the sea for a week in January. It is windy there and the sea is very cool.
In autumn, the trees are all orange and brown. Our autumn is March, April and May. In winter, it snows in some places. We go skiing in the Snowy Mountains every winter in June, July or August. It is usually very cold, but it is my favourite season. What is your favourite season?
Write soon
Yours sincerely
Kitty

Before 1800, women’s only place was in the home. The idea of women in the business world was unthinkable. No “nice” woman would dream of entering what was a “man’s world”. Even if she could, what would she do? Men were sure that no woman could do a job outside her home. This was such a widely accepted idea. When the famous Bront sisters began writing books in 1846, they disguised (隐瞒) themselves by signing their books with men’s names.
Teaching was the first profession open to women soon after 1800. But even that was not an easy profession for women to enter because most high schools and colleges were open only to men. Oberlin College was the first college in America to accept women.
Hospital nursing became great work for women only after Florence Nightingale became famous. Because she was a rich and cultured woman, as well as a nurse, people began to believe it was possible for women to nurse the sick and still be “ladies”. Miss Nightingale opened England’s first training school for nurses in 1860.
The invention of the typewriter in 1867 helped to bring women out of the home and into the business world. Because women had quick fingers, they learned to operate typewriters quickly and well.
By 1900, thousands of women were working at real jobs in schools, hospitals, and offices in both England and America. Some women even managed to become doctors or lawyers. The ideas that “nice” women could work in the business world had been accepted.

Lucy Brown, age 12, puts smiles on the faces of kids who are going through a hard time—and keeps the kids very warm too. She sews (缝纫) blankets for children who are dealing with some kind of challenge such as being sick, feeling lonely, losing a family member, or getting low grades.
Lucy got the idea when she was eight years old. She had just learned to sew and made a blanket as a gift for her friend’s birthday. “She loved it,” Lucy says. “So, I thought maybe other kids might need that little extra love.”
Her mom posted on social media (社交媒体) that Lucy wanted to make a blanket for someone who needed care. They asked for suggestions. When 20 recommendations (提议) came in, Lucy didn’t want to choose just one. She met all of the needs! She has already made more than 800 blankets for kids in 19 countries.
Her favourite part is learning about each child. “I love hearing their stories and getting to know them,” she says. She tries to match the fabric (布料) and pattern to the children’s interests. Then she heads to her sewing machine.
On each of her creations, Lucy adds a hand-sewn heart. “That’s to let whoever gets the blanket know they are loved,” she says.
Many kids who’ve received a blanket keep in touch with Lucy. She now has friends all over the world. “I love knowing that I can make a difference,” Lucy says. “Everyone can do something. Even the smallest act of kindness counts. It can change lives.”

A few years ago the company I work for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year. I’ve always loved jogging, so I was really happy when I found out the apartment they had rented (租) for us was next to Central Park. This meant that every morning I could go for a run before I went to work.
Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of muggers (抢劫犯) in the park, I didn’t usually take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything? But this morning my wife asked me to buy some bread on the way home so I put a $10 note in my pocket.
While I was running through the park, another jogger bumped into me. He apologized and continued running. I thought it was a bit strange so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing. I immediately started to run after another jogger. I finally caught up and grabbed him by his arm. I started shouting and demanding that he gave me the $10. I’m not usually a hot-headed person but I really lost my temper. This seemed to frighten him and he quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.
I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home I began to tell my wife my story. “You won’t believe what happened to me,” I started. She immediately interrupted, “I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind 《驭风男孩》tells the true story of William Kamkwamba. He grew up in a small village in Malawi, Africa. He and his friends Geoffrey and Gilbert made what toys they had from trash. They attended Wimbe Primary School and helped their families in the fields. William and Geoffrey had interest in radios and took them apart to understand the machinery inside. William looked forward to secondary school and taking science classes. In December 2000, heavy rains made it too hard for farmers to plant their corn. Although worried about a terrible harvest, William began trying to understand how bicycle dynamos (发电机) work. They could light a bulb using the electricity produced by someone pedaling. He dreamed of how his family’s life would improve with electric power.
By December 2001, the corn supply in his village was nearly running out, and families were starving. William learned that he had been accepted into secondary school, which would give him a chance to achieve his goals. But soon after classes began, William was forced to leave school because there was no money for his school tuition.
Finally in March 2002, there was corn, and families could eat again. William started thinking about school and visited the library at Wimbe Primary School to keep his mind active. There,he found books on physics and engineering. From the pictures and diagrams in the book Explaining Physics, William got the idea to build a wind mill to produce electricity. He began spending his days looking for old machinery parts. To the people in his village, William seemed to have gone crazy. But William, with the help of Gilbert and Geoffrey, built the wind mill. It worked! He wired a system of lights for his house and also figured out how to charge cell phones. When some officials visited Wimbe Primary School, they noticed William’s wind mill. One helped spread the story of the boy with the talent for science across Malawi and the world. William went to a TED Conference in Tanzania. Then he got the chance to attend the African Leadership Academy in South Africa where he met other young inventors and scientists. They all wanted to make Africa’s future brighter.
William’s true story tells us that everybody should make efforts to realize his or her dreams.

If you are a hiker or a nature lover, you’ll enjoy reading A Walk in the Woods.
It’s a true story, written as a comedy. The author is Bill Bryson. Bryson returned to the US after 20 years in Britain and decided to get familiar with his native country by walking the Appalachian Trail (阿巴拉契亚山道).
The trail, about 3,500 kilometers long, is popular with thousands of hikers. It goes from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mountain Katahdin in Maine. The story offers a landscape of silent forests and beautiful lakes. But as a writer with comic genius, Bryson also finds humor in the struggles that he and his old friend, Stephen Katz, went through.
Lots of silly things happen along the way. At the beginning, Bryson reads about the dangers of the wild and stays awake for hours each night, because he is worried he will be killed by bears. Later the two middle-aged men try to climb a mountain but get caught in a snowstorm. They get lost more than once, but they always manage to find their way back to the trail. They also meet a lot of strange people.
But the story is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson also talks about acid rain (酸雨), the hunting of birds, and damage to the ecosystem (生态系统). It’s a mix of the silly and the serious, a fresh way of getting readers to actually care about the environmental problems. As the website Book Browse said in a review, the book “will certainly become a modern classic of travel literature”.

In the north and mid-west, it is very hot sometimes and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
