When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard(果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.

One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals(渠) and other projects began to be built in my village.“Who page number 0

are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government,” my grandma replied.

Shortly afterwards, I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.

One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers didn't have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project(水利工程) was completed,a policy was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.

I was once a very shy child. When I was young,I stood behind my mom whenever I met anyone new. Even as an adult, I find it takes a while for me to be warm to people. However,I have learned how to be“fearless”.

As everyone knows, as you move through each grade, you have more speaking tasks. Whether it's to answer questions in class, to take part in group discussions, to do speeches in front of class— it never seems to end. And I hate it! Any time I had a presentation(展示) to do, I managed to avoid it.

This fear influenced my personal life as well. I didn't like to talk to people in groups. I was afraid of being the focus of attention. I realized being afraid of social experiences and public speaking was hurting my ability to enjoy life and achieve goals. I knew that I had to change and take action to force myself to do things I didn't like.

To feel the fear and do it anyway is by far the best way to overcome something. I changed in many aspects (方面) in my life, from making new friends, going to parties and meeting different people. Public speaking isn't actually something I set out to do. However, when I was known as an engineer, many doors started to open to me when I came to public speaking.

Recently I spoke in front of 200 people for about an hour. I felt no fear. In fact, I was looking forward to doing the speech.

Many Chinese mothers are afraid that their children will fall behind their classmates, so these mothers are becoming“tiger mothers”. They believe the harder their children study, the happier life they will have in the future. Is it true? Lulu and her sister Sophia may have a say.

Lulu and Sophia have a“tiger mother”. She pushed them a lot when they were young. For example, they were not allowed to get grades lower than A. They had to practice the piano or violin for several hours a day. There were no games or TV.

The tiger mother, Amy, is a Chinese-American professor at Yale Law School in the USA. Several years ago, she wrote a book named Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother and shared her strict parenting style(育儿方式) in it.

Many people don't like Amy's style of parenting. They once worried that her daughters would not be happy. However, the two girls have grown up and they are thankful to their mother. Sophia has just graduated from Yale University. She is hard-working, friendly and helpful. Not long ago. she shared some useful studying tips online.
