J. K. Rowling frequently shows there is magic every day. Her Harry Potter series has helped people through times of stress and depression and she is always there to deliver wise words of encouragement.
She is one celebrity who is very active on Twitter. So when a single dad named Matt Burke sent her a message thanking her for the series, she noticed. Her series had helped strengthen his relationship with his 9yearold daughter Bailey.
He included a link to his article titled Being a Broke Parent. He explained how he hadn’t found a level of financial stability that allowed him to pay bills on time and take his daughter on more activities and events. The family also doesn’t have the Internet or TV, which means there’s no “digital babysitter” and he has to rely on his own creative ways to bond with his daughter. Since he received the series, the main thing that has occupied them these days is reading books together.
Burke admits that he thought he was “too cool” for the books when they first came out and he was in his twenties, but he’s loving reading them now. “We switch off chapter by chapter reading them out loud.” Burke explains. “This not only allows her to get more used to reading aloud in front of someone, but it gets me directly involved in something she loves, and it gives me the chance to be very dramatic when I read my chapters and bring myself into the characters in the book, which has proven to be a ton of fun.”
After hearing Burke’s story, Rowling said how honored she was when Harry Potter was a part of his family’s life and offered Burke more books. Besides, people are also offering to send Burke more books as gifts. For Burke, this experience, far more than gifts, will be what he treasures.

There exist cruel wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, so it’s not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humour just to help us go through difficult times in our lives. Putting a smile on someone’s face when you know they are feeling depressed makes them feel good and warms their heart.
How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, coworker, neighbor, close friend, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at the corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don’t know the person I’m joking around with.My grandma always found humour in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is a common manner to speak to others that are around you.
I know of a few people that don't have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their faces. They don’t get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke?
Laughing is essential to keep our stress levels under control. Without humour, we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medication to keep ourselves from going crazy. There is too much sadness, which will bring little light into our lives.
Therefore, I believe our best medicine is to get together, tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.

A.fact and description
B.story and persuasion
C.example and the conclusion
D.evidence and the argument
29.What does the underlined phrase “busting a gut” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.keeping silent B.speaking loud
C.laughing hard D.explaining carefully
30.According to the passage, why is laughing necessary and essential?
A.it can control our stress levels
B.it makes people more confident
C.it can help people get on well with others
D.it can help get rid of the cruelty in the world
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To talk about his own understanding of humour
B.To encourage people to be humorous in daily life
C.To introduce a practical way to get through daily life
D.To convince people of the power of being optimistic about life
D
You wake up in the mornings. The day is beautiful and the plans for the day are what you have been looking forward to for a long time. Then the telephone rings, you say hello, and the drama starts. The person on the other end has a depressing tone in his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his morning is and that there is nothing to look forward to. Are you still in a wonderful mood? Impossible!
Communicating with negative people can wash out your happiness. It may not change what you think, but communicating long enough with them will make you feel depressed for a moment or a long time.
Life brings ups and downs, but some people are stuck in the wrong idea that life has no happiness to offer. They only feel glad when they make others feel bad. No wonder they can hardly win others’ pity or respect.
When you communicate with positive people, your spirit stays high and therefore more positive things are attracted. When the dagger (匕首) of a negative person is put into you, you will always feel down.
Sometimes we have no choice but to communicate with negative people. It could be a coworker or a relative. In this case, say what needs to be said as little as possible. Sometimes letting out your anger back to the negative person may make you feel good, but this will lower you to that same negative level and they won’t feel ashamed of themselves about that.
Negativity often affects happiness without even being realised. The negative words of another person at the start of a day can cling to (附着) you throughout the rest of your day, which makes you feel bad and steals your happiness. Life is too short to feel negative. Stay positive and avoid negativity as much as possible.
32.How can negative people affect us?
A.By influencing our emotion.
B.By telling us the nature of life.
C.By changing our ways of thinking.
D.By comparing their attitudes to life with ours.
33.What can we do when communicating with negative people?
A.Change negative people’s attitudes to life
B.Show our dissatisfaction with negative people
C.Make negative people feel ashamed of themselves
D.Communicate with negative people as little as possible
34.What is the author’s attitude towards negative people?
A.Favourable. B.Critical. C.Indifferent. D.Supportive.
35.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Factors of affecting a wonderful mood
B.Benefits of communicating with positive people
C.Advice on communicating with negative people
D.Importance of Staying positive and avoiding negativity

Jack was a bright and curious child, always eager to learn new things and explore the mysterious world about science. However, he often found himself in disagreement with his mother. His mother was always busy with her work and she didn’t have enough time to learn about his interests and passions.
One day, Jack came home from school feeling particularly excited. He just found a sci-fi book about an adventure on the moon. Upon arriving at home, he couldn’t tear himself away from the book. He read and read until it was dark. Having finished reading it, he couldn't wait to share it with his mother, only to be told that he should focus on more practical subjects like math and physics , which would help him get into a good college and have a successful career.
Jack couldn’t understand why his mother didn’t see the value of what he was doing. He felt that she was holding him back and not allowing him to pursue his true interests. “Why can’t you see how important this is to me?” Jack asked his mother angrily. “I’m never going to be happy if I have to spend my life doing things that I show no interest in just because they are practical or make you proud.”
The once peaceful home was filled with tension and anger. His mother’s voice grew louder as she shouted, “ You can’t just do whatever you want! You should be responsible for your future!” Jack , fueled by his own frustration, shouted back, “I am tired of you always telling me what to do! I am not a child anymore! You only care about your own feelings! You never thought about my feelings!” They were so caught up in their own anger and hurt that they failed to see how their words and actions were affecting each other.
