(23-24高二上·江苏南通·期末)I was visiting my parents in 2003 when my mom came out of their room with a puzzled look on her face. She’d been listening to the radio and heard an interview with a best-selling author of young adult fantasy novels. The woman’s name was Tamora Pierce, the same as a young student my mom had taught nearly four decades before.
The Internet should be able to tell us. I found the author’s website quickly. She was a popular writer of books. I clicked on the biography link to scan for references to Burlingame Junior High, where my mom had worked, and my heart began to excite when I spotted it at the bottom of the first section. Here was confirmation that my mother had taught a now-famous writer!
But my eyes came to a stop reading the next paragraph, in which Pierce described writing her first fiction as a sixth grader. “The next year, as I was still scribbling (乱写) my own stories, my English teacher, Mrs. Jacobson, introduced me to the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien,” the biography read. “I got hooked on fantasy, and then on science fiction, and both made their way into my stories.” My mother’s name was Mary Jacobson.
Within days, my dad had checked out all the Tamora Pierce books at the local library, and in one we found another surprise: a 1998 novel, which was dedicated (题献词) to “the teacher who shaped my life”. The teacher was Mary Jacobson. The dedication concluded, “A great teacher is above all other treasures.”

(23-24高二上·浙江绍兴·期末)It is difficult to name a female architect more iconic than Zaha Hadid, whose name can be translated from Arabic as glorious. She passed away five years ago at the age of 65, but the impact she has left on the world of architecture is profound.
Hadid was born into an upper-class Iraqi family in 1950. At the very beginning, she wanted to become a mathematician and studied science at the American University of Beirut, But at some point she realized that she preferred shapes to numbers. And she turned her concentration to architecture and went to London where she met the famous Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.
“There are 360 degrees, so why stick to one?” Hadid once said. Despite her abundance of amazing ideas, before the beginning of the 90s, not a single building based on her blueprints had been built. Her highly expressive style, while initially criticized and believed to be crazy, is now regarded as pioneering work. Her striking contemporary architecture, inspired by natural landforms, has graced the skylines of major metropolitan cities.
“Women are always being told, ‘you’re not going to make it; It’s too difficult. You can’t do that Don’t enter this competition; You’ll never win it’,” Hadid said. “They need confidence in themselves and people around them for support.”
Never one to be boxed in by conventions, Hadid proved society wrong. She received her first prize, the “Gold Medal Architectural Design” for her British Architecture in 1982. From then on, the awards kept rolling in. But the true triumph for Hadid came in 2004. Her project for the London Olympics Aquatic Center won her the Pritzker Architecture Prize. She became the first woman and first Muslim to earn the award, making a name for herself and paving the way for female architects.
Hadid’s genius lives on in the array of many other spectacular buildings she has left behind in the world. Among them are the Guangzhou Opera House, the Beijing Daxing International Airport, as well as the Al Wakrah Stadium in Qatar where the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be held.
Hadid may be gone, but her global influence on a new generation of female architects is here to stay.

(23-24高二上·安徽宣城·期末)Torbjorn Pedersen is a Danish traveler who recently finished a trip around the world. But this wasn’t just any trip.
In 2013, Mr. Pedersen read an article about someone who had visited all the countries of the world. It made him realize he could set a record by doing the same thing, but without flying.
He hoped that he could live on a budget of about $20 a day. He had originally anticipated it would take four years to reach countries, but the world had other plans.
Though he did have to quit his job and leave his parents and girlfriend behind, the first part of his trip was pretty easy, but as he moved on to other parts of the world, things began to get hard.

(23-24高二上·福建莆田·期末)Many people around me make a difference to the world on a daily basis — being kind in unexpected ways and sharing the generosity of their lives with others. I, like many of them, volunteer some of my time in order to give back just a little of what I am so blessed to have. I volunteered to go to Guatemala with an eyeglass team from International Relief Teams — an organization I have supported in other ways for many years.
Our team went to a small town in Guatemala, San Augustin. We set up our tables and packages of pre-made glasses in the dirty courtyard of a clinic, put up the Snellen chart (an eye chart) on a wall, and began our work.
Young and old people came from many of the surrounding towns. Most had never received an eye exam before. They waited for hours patiently in the sun, never complaining. If we could help them out, their thankfulness for a simple pair of glasses was overwhelming. Some only left with eye drops or sunglasses, and even these people expressed their gratitude sincerely. All of them were very generous with blessings and smiles. We heard over and over from people who knew their eyes needed help but they had not gone to a doctor because it was too expensive, or had not got the glasses they needed for the same reason.
It’s so easy to overlook how much difference the volunteers’ small actions can make to the lives of people in Guatemala. The glasses in my country are so easily available, but to people in Guatemala, they are not.
As those who could give them a hand, we watched their lives change. What a gift sight is — and what a difference being able to see clearly makes! Here, we’d like you to join us and take action to help people in need. And every day, those actions change lives. No action is too small; no action is ever wasted.

A.Kind and helpful. B.Poor but grateful.
C.Considerate and patient. D.Knowledgeable but unhealthy.
20.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To urge people to protect their eyes.
B.To ask people to volunteer in Guatemala.
C.To call on people to do good deeds in daily life.
D.To show the difficult life of people in Guatemala.

(23-24高二上·江西上饶·期末)My 83-year-old mother came to live with me a year ago last November. She was very ill and I had to put my life on hold to care for her.
Each morning, I got her up and dressed her and made her breakfast and sat with her. I rushed for a bowl when she felt sick, and lit fires to keep her warm. I cooked and talked her into eating some. It’s a hard job caring for a sick or dying parent, whoever you are. But it was especially hard for me, I feel, because I am a doctor myself. I couldn’t help looking at her in two different ways. The medical professional saw a body and checked it with the cold heart that medicine requires. But the daughter saw the woman who had given birth to me, sent me off to college and had been an important role for a long time in my life for over half a century.
Also, my mother didn’t appreciate how hard it was for me to care for her. I remember an exchange between her and the nurse who came to see her once a week.
“You could get some more help with care.” “Oh, I don’t think I need that,” Mom said.
Mom didn’t understand that the help would have taken some of the hard work off me. None of the treatments her doctors gave her worked, and finally her life became about free of pain. She refused painkillers (止痛药) for a long time, but finally the pain beat her. And when she accepted painkillers she accepted the fact that she would die.
Illness and needs took us across personal boundaries (边界) I’d never considered before. And yet, while living and being and dying with Mom I saw something valuable coming. We became closer. We shared so many stories from our past that it was as if our memories had become one.
In the past our relationship had been difficult. We had often argued. But when the end came, both of us simply accepted that we looked at the world in different ways. We were daughter and mother and we loved each other. That was all that mattered.
21.Why was taking care of her mom especially hard for the writer?
A.She was too busy living her own life.

(23-24高二上·山东青岛·期末)The area around Taal Lake on Luzon Island in the Philippines is known for its natural beauty. Tourism is popular there as travelers go there to see the scenery that surrounds Taal Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the country. It was quiet for years until January 12,2020 when the volcano erupted. Since then, the cities surrounding the volcano have been covered with ash and many people are forced to leave home.
But the ash didn’t stop the residents of Binan, a city that is 35 km south of Manilla, from finding a way to help their neighbors in the towns that suffered the most from Taal. Binan Mayor Walfredo Dimaguila ordered the city residents to collect the ash and to put it in sacks (麻袋) to be sent to the state-owned factory that can produce 5,000 bricks (砖) a day to turn it into bricks to use for rebuilding damaged communities.
“What we plan is to turn them into hollow blocks and bricks and sell them to interested companies,” Dimaguila said. But he noted, the money would be donated to the people directly affected by the volcano. “When Batangas (the region where Taal is located) is in recovery, the bricks can not only be used to build schools, community halls and livelihood centers but also help deal with ash pollution for the earth,” Dimaguila said. “The misfortune of our neighbors in Batangas is there. Let’s transform this into opportunity.”

(23-24高二上·河南驻马店·期末)Shen Yue, 26, was born in East China’s Shandong province, a region that many people believe prioritizes secure, officially-budgeted positions such as civil service. However, Shen’s decision to dive into the unpredictable world of full-time video blogging after graduating in 2019, with a focus on the popular game League of Legends (LOL), raised eyebrows.
Initially, Shen’s family supported his career choice, but when he struggled to make ends meet within the first year, they began to advise him to seek a more secure job. But Shen remained determined and persisted with his chosen path.
A turning point in Shen’s career occurred at the start of this year when he posted a seemingly odd video, replacing the D and F keys on a keyboard, crucial for in-game character actions, with a foot pedal. Describing it as a “pointless invention” created for fun, Shen admitted that the video initially received limited attention. But a message from a viewer who had lost an arm in a car accident changed everything. The viewer, who relied on one hand to play games, sought guidance on creating a similar foot pedal. “I hadn’t realized that there would be disabled players in need of this kind of pedal,” Shen said. Despite his limited knowledge of circuit-building, he managed to produce 10 different foot pedals and traveled to Chongqing to personally assist the player in installation(安装), gaining valuable feedback.
“Due to physical limitations, this player could only operate two simple game characters,” Shen explained. However, with this device, which allows the player to pedal with his foot, he can now play games like a regular person using a keyboard.
Recognizing the diverse needs of disabled players nationwide, Shen started providing free assistance in making these pedals. The continuous feedback within the community encouraged Shen to improve his inventions constantly.
Shen’s videos recording his experiences touched many internet users, earning him the title of the true “legend” of LOL. “I’m honored to receive this praise. But the real legends were the audience whose support had made the needs of disabled players easier to understand,” he said.

(23-24高二上·湖北黄冈·期末)A simple haircut can be a major stress or for someone with cognitive or physical disabilities. Loud noises from hair dryers and strong smells can trigger a person with autism (自闭症), and just getting in the door can be tough for anyone in a wheelchair. But one Minnesota stylist is looking to change that by opening an accessible salon.
With a nine-year-old stepdaughter, Maddy, who uses a wheelchair because of spina-bifida (脊柱裂), Cat Rongitsch knows firsthand how inaccessible spaces like hair salons can be. “We’ve been dragged through back doors or expected to carry her down stairs or use freight elevators because they’re not prepared to accommodate her,” says Rongitsch, who also has a three-year-old daughter who might have high-functioning autism, though she hasn’t been tested yet.
Rongitsch already makes haircut house calls to kids who find traditional salons stressful. “Everyone is desperate for a safe place that will not be a crazy meltdown experience, and oftentimes that means calling down to someone’s house,” she says. “Going anywhere else seems unimaginable.” But Rongitsch dreams of a place where anyone can feel safe and comfortable getting a haircut outside the home.
Rongitsch is making plans to open Dignified Beauty in St. Paul, Minnesota. The doors and walkways would have plenty of room for wheelchairs, and textured floors would make it easy for visually impaired people to navigate.
A spa-like atmosphere at Dignified Beauty would be less triggering to people with autism. Loud top-40 hits would be replaced with soft classical music (if anything). Stylists would use quiet hair dryers and soft voices. Fidget toys (解压玩具) and blankets would be on hand to help people stay calm. Safe spaces would be available if anyone felt overwhelmed by sound, smell, or touch.
As for the staff, Rongitsch would look to hire people with “a heart full of love for each individual,” she says. Stylists would learn how to handle customers who don’t like others touching their hair. They would also give every client the same level of dignity, which is particularly important to Rongitsch, who’s seen strangers ignore Maddy. “They’re not sure if it’s a physical disability or mental disability loo, so they will talk to me and not her,” says Rongitsch. “That issue is the biggest with her: just being acknowledged as a person.”
33.What can we know about Rongitsch from the first 3 paragraphs?
A.She has a nine-year-old daughter who uses a wheelchair.

(23-24高二上·广东广州·期末)Growing up on a farm in Virginia during racial segregation (种族隔离) , West knew education would be her means of escape. But she didn’t know her quiet work would change lives around the world.
Gladys West knew from a young age that she didn’t want to be a farmer. But the mathematician, born in 1930 in a county, still had to help harvest crops on her family’s small farm. The hard work started before daybreak and lasted well into the blistering heat of the afternoon. She hated the dirt but, while she worked, she kept her mind on the building behind the trees at the end of the farm. It was her school, and even then she knew it would be her ticket to freedom. “I was gonna get an education and I was going to get out of there. I wasn’t going to be stuck there all my life,” West, 89, says firmly.
Gladys West began her career as a mathematician in 1956 in a lab where there were only three other black employees when she joined. She was widely admired for her ability to solve complex mathematical problems by hand. She eventually went on to program computers to solve the equations (等式) for her. Her first major project was to determine the movements of Neptune and Pluto in relation to each other. In 1978, Gladys became the Project Manager of SeaSat, an surveillance (监控) satellite designed to provide data on oceanographic features and conditions. The project was among the first to show that satellites can be used to observe oceanographic data. By programming a computer to account for tides, gravity, and other factors, Gladys and her team created a program to precisely calculate the orbit of satellites. Her work on this project made it possible to develop a geoid, which is a model of the shape of the Earth. The model and its later updates led to her developing the GPS system, which can make accurate calculations in any location on Earth.
Finally in 2018, through her tireless efforts, Gladys West received formal recognition for her work on the GPS. Her name also got featured on the BBC’s 100 Women of 2018, which honored inspiring women from around the globe.

Phuntsok Tobgye is one of the inheritors (继承人) of Tsedong thangka. It is a branch of the Miantang painting, the most influential school of Tibetan thangka painting. Through the efforts of thangka painters, the skills have been passed to younger generations, with their works reaching a wider range of art lovers.
When he was a child, Phuntsok Tobgye developed an interest in the thangka paintings. He started sketching the landscape of his hometown. After primary school, he began to learn thangka painting.
This story made me see my mom differently. We knew she was a teacher, but we had no idea what kind of teacher she had been. She was just 24 when she taught Pierce. Until 2011, when she passed away, we did know who she was.

To cross large bodies of water, Mr. Pedersen took boats. Sometimes it was hard to find a boat. At other times, Mr. Pedersen was on a boat for days, being tossed (摇摆颠簸) by strong waves during a storm. He traveled by taxi, bus, train, and even walking. With a limited budget, sometimes people invited him into their homes. At other times, he had to sleep outside. Mr. Pedersen says he had many difficult experiences. He was once held at gunpoint and thought he might be killed. He also became severely ill with a serious disease.
But he also had many good experiences. Mr. Pedersen says that one reason why he didn’t give up was the help he got from people all over the world. On July 26, Mr. Pedersen arrived back in Denmark after a 33-day boat ride. He was met by about 150 people, including friends and family members.
In the last 10 years, he’s covered around 260,000 miles — roughly 10 times the distance around the Earth. Mr. Pedersen says he’s looking forward to some quiet time to think about his trip. After that, he plans to write a book and share what he learned in his travels around the world.

B.She and her mom had a difficult relationship.
C.She was too old to look after her mom carefully.
D.She regarded her mom both as a patient and a loved one.
22.When the writer heard the conversation between her mom and the nurse, ______.
A.she felt very upset. B.she was surprised.
C.she showed her thanks to the nurse. D.she thought she needed a more helpful nurse.
23.We can infer from the passage that ______.
A.the writer’s mom was a kind and gentle woman.
B.it was easier for the writer to take care of her mom as a doctor.
C.the writer was getting on better with her mom while taking care of her.
D.the writer’s mom had difficulty understanding what the nurse said.
24.What did the writer learn from the experience of looking after her sick mother?
A.Love was more important than differences. B.Being alive was the most important thing.
C.We should learn to understand other people. D.It was better for family members to live their own.

29.What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs?
A.Shen’s career was thought to be promising.
B.Shen’s difficulties didn’t defeat him.
C.Shen’s family were always for his choice.
D.Shen’s job focused on developing games.
30.The viewer’s message made Shen realize that _________.
A.there was some use for the foot pedal
B.different foot pedals should be created
C.he helped the disabled use pedals
D.he needed to accept others’ feedback
31.Which of the following best describes Shen?

(23-24高二上·湖南株洲·期末)In 2015, Chennai was destroyed by one of the worst floods in over a century, leaving thousands without food, water and supplies. During the flood, many heroes arose, one of whom was Santosh, a young man who owned a take-out restaurant in Chennai.
When the first flood hit in November, he got a call from a company called Naga Rava. The company asked him to prepare 5,000 packets of food and give them to the flood victims. He, with his partners, took the order, cooked for 14 hours and delivered them. But that night, as they sat together discussing the event of the day, they actually felt ashamed. “Here was a man not even from Chennai and he was going out of his way to help the affected people.
