Fall is the perfect time for a vacation. This list of unique autumn getaway options offers plenty of fun ways to enjoy beautiful fall leaves, impressive beaches and seasonal festivals with exceptional weather and, in many cases, smaller crowds. Here are the top destinations for a fall weekend away.
Gulf Shores, Alabama
Alabama’s Gulf Coast is attractive year-round, but the fall months bring fewer crowds and more affordable prices on hotels. Head to Gulf Shores for warm ocean waters and lovely white sand beaches. There’s also plenty to do at this beach destination outside of playing in the sand and surfing. For example, you can set aside a few hours to visit the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo or a downtown music venue and restaurant called The Hangout.

However, visiting in fall allows you to enjoy the famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, which takes place in October. Book a trip to Albuquerque in early October to see hundreds of brightly colored balloons dot the sky — you can even take a balloon ride yourself with a local tour operator.
Sedona, Arizona
Red Rock Country is surrounded by more than 1.8 million acres of national forest along with towering cliffs (悬崖) and colorful stone formations. Sedona is perfect if you’re seeking fall destinations for hiking, biking and exploration. Visit beautiful town for outdoor recreation (娱乐) at one of its state parks and shop for local souvenirs at the Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village.
Destin, Florida
Destin features impressive white sand beaches and a family-friendly atmosphere. The weather is perfect in the fall and the summer crowds are long gone. What’s more, added nonstop routes to Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport from many U.S. airports make Florida more accessible to travelers than ever before.

Olive, Mabel and Me by Andrew Cotter
This is a funny telling of how a sports commentator turned his two dogs into Internet sensations (轰动). If you’ve seen videos of dogs and laughed your but t off, the book provides the same humor, along with wonderful pictures of dogs and Scottish highlands. Let’s face it—who doesn’t need a good laugh, and pictures of dogs?
—Isabel Quintana
Bruno, Chief of Police by Martin Walker
A mystery series focused on Bruno Courrèges, the chief of police in the small town of St. Denis in the Périgord region of southwestern France. Walker brings his knowledge both as a journalist and as a resident of St. Denis to these pages, as he explores the culture and socio-economic changes occurring in contemporary rural France.
—Edward Copenhagen
Land of Aeolia by Ilias Venezis, translated by Therese Sellers
The author writes of his peaceful childhood summers in Anatolia, before the horrors of World War I and the loss of his homeland. This is a beautiful novel that is beyond language and country and brings back memories of a lost world. I have found some English translations of modern Greek literature lacking the ability to express the richness of the Greek language, but Sellers deals with this playful and magical language beautifully.
—Rhea Lesage
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
I wish everyone hoping to start a home garden could read the chapter The Three Sisters. The author, an authority on plant study, describes how the three work and play together. She expertly creates a sense of mystery and beauty of everyday life. And she reminds readers how much we could learn from our sisters and brothers.

Hands-only CPR
To carry out a chest compression (压缩):
Place the heel of your hand on the breastbone at the centre of the person’s chest.
Place your other hand on top of your first hand and interlock your fingers.
Position yourself with your shoulders above your hands.
Using your body weight (not just your arms), press straight down by 5-6cm (2-2.5 inches) on their chest.
Keeping your hands on their chest, release the compression and allow the chest to return to its original position.
Repeat these compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 times per minute until an ambulance arrives or you become exhausted.

Open the child’s airway by placing one hand on the child’s forehead and gently tilting their head back and lifting the chin. Remove any visible obstructions from the mouth and nose.
Pinch their nose. Seal your mouth over their mouth and blow steadily and firmly into their mouth, checking that their chest rises. Give five initial rescue breaths.
Place the heel of one hand on the center of their chest and push down by 5cm(about two inches), which is approximately one-third of the chest diameter. The quality (depth)of chest compressions is very important. Use two hands if you can’t achieve a depth of 5cmusing one hand.
After every 30 chest compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute, give two breaths.
Continue with cycles of 30 chest compressions and two rescue breaths until they begin to recover or emergency help arrives.

If your main interests lie in military aviation, this museum will have everything you’ve ever wanted to see. It features exhibits on World War II, the Korean War, the Southeast Asia War and the Cold War. They’ve also got a Missile Gallery as well as a Space Gallery where visitors can walk inside a full-size reproduction of a NASA shuttle.
U. S. Space and Rocket Center |Huntsville
Space fans know this museum to be the site of the original Space Camp, including the film by the same name, but there’s plenty more to see here. The Center has a number of exhibits both indoors and out and many play areas for younger kids. 3D movies and live science shows add to the appeal. Most impressively, it is totally free to visitors.
