Unit 13 We're trying to save the earth!
单元话题阅读理解练习
(23-24九年级上·江苏盐城·期末)Water is important for all living things on Earth. The water cycle is a natural process that takes water from the ground and the sky and brings it back to the earth again. It is a cycle that happens the whole year and is most active from March to June in China. In this article, we will explore the water cycle and discuss its importance for Earth.
The water cycle always begins with water vapour (蒸汽). When it’s hot outside, you can see clouds forming in the sky. These clouds are made of water vapour that comes from the ground, plants and rivers. As water vapour rises into the sky, it cools down and becomes clouds. After that, clouds travel through the sky and fall back to Earth as rain or snow. Then, water runs through rivers and oceans and finally returns to the earth again in different forms like rainwater or snow.
The water cycle plays an important role in protecting our Earth’s climate. It provides us with water to drink and keeps our climate healthy. On top of that, it takes water from rivers and oceans and brings it to the areas that don’t have enough water. Without the cycle. we would face many problems. When there is too much water in one place, it becomes a flood. When water is badly in need, it becomes a drought. Besides, water vapour can take heat from the sun and keep our planet cool.
The water cycle is a natural process that keeps our planet alive. It’s important for plants and animals to drink water and for our rivers to stay flowing with water. Understanding the water cycle can help us enjoy the beauty of nature, know how our planet works and develop better methods to protect our Earth. And that is a responsibility we should take on.

(24-25九年级上·江苏扬州·期中)Research recently published in the journal Science studied land subsidence (地面沉降) in China’s major cities, raising people’s worries about land sinking in the country.
However, Hu Xie, co-author of the study, said this idea isn’t right scientifically. “Almost every city has areas of sinking and uplift (上升),” Hu told the Intellectual, a new science and technology media. The sinking of certain areas in a city does not mean the whole city is sinking. Human activities, like digging to build or taking out groundwater, are often the reason for it. What matters is how the areas are influenced and how quickly the land changes.
In fact, during times of fast economic development, the rate of land subsidence in China has been much slower compared to other countries.
For example, in San Jose, California, US, certain areas sank by 1.2 meters between 1912 and 1933. This was the time when the area quickly developed. The subsidence rate in Tokyo, Japan, even reached 27 centimeters a year during the 1950s. However, the subsidence rates in major Chinese cities are still around a few millimeters a year.
Even so, the government has taken measures to slow down the sinking. The key is not taking out too much water from the ground. The South-to-North Water Diversion Project (南水北调工程) is offering a helping hand to the country’s northern cities. Through this project, less water from the ground is used in northern areas and land subsidence in many areas of Beijing and Tianjin has stopped.
Shanghai has also reduced yearly ground subsidence from around 10 mm in 1995 to 6 mm in 2019 through efforts such as improving the water supply system (供水系统) and closing deep wells (井), according to The Paper.

(24-25九年级上·河北邢台·期中)Look at the Earth from space. Why does our planet look so blue? It’s blue because water covers almost three quarters of the Earth’s surface. Water is not just an important part of our planet. It is an important part of our body, too. More than half of our total body weight is water.
Our body loses water whenever we exercise or go to the toilet. That’s why we need to drink plenty of water every day. We drink water. We use it to cook, clean, and carry waste out of our homes. Farmers use it to grow vegetables and crops like rice and corn, factories use it to make products.
Since the 1950s, the amount of water people use has increased by three times. But the water supply hasn’t. Scientists worry that soon there won’t be enough water for us, as well as for the animals and plants. What can we do to help? Use water wisely.
Having enough water isn’t our only problem. We also need it clean.
Right now, ships and factories are putting wastes into seas, rivers and so on. Even chemicals that farmers use are running into rivers and lakes. All this pollution can make the water dangerous to drink. It can also harm fish and other water-living lives.
We must do something to stop pollution. It’s the best way to protect our world’s most valuable natural resource.
1.How many important areas of water are mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.

3.What is the writer’s purpose in writing his passage?
A.To ask people to value water.
B.To advise people to drink more water.
C.To introduce the uses of water.
D.To describe the situation of water supply.

(22-23九年级上·浙江绍兴·期末)Whatever we don’t want, eggshells, newspapers, soda cans or old socks, is all garbage. And garbage goes to the garbage bin. There seems to be nothing wrong with that. But do you really know how to throw away garbage properly?
China has been developing garbage sorting (分类) for over 10 years, but the idea of garbage sorting hasn’t been accepted completely. Shenzhen has developed new policies which say people will be fined up to 100 yuan for not sorting rubbish.
“It’s clear that the government is pushing this forward strictly,” said Zhang Ning, a program officer. “But I’m afraid the policies will prove to get stuck because garbage sorting has never been achieved by only using punishments.”
A recent survey found that 49.5 percent of the people still don’t know how to sort garbage, while 45.5 percent can just do it patiently. “Lots of people are not sure about what’s recycle and what’s general waste,” Zhang Minjing, a government officer, told China.Org.cn.
According to Zhang, 70 percent of garbage is a “misplaced resource”. For example, every ton of waste paper can be used to make 850 kg of paper. But this is based on the proper garbage sorting. And the action of households—where the sorting firstly starts—is the key. “Garbage sorting is a chain effect. Improper behavior at the very beginning will make all the following effects go useless,” he added, “It requires everyone’s hard work.”
To change people’s ideas on sorting the garbage is never easy. Zhang Xie, 23, who works at a shopping mall, said, “In my office, each person has only one bin and everything goes in there.” Then she added, “We do have two larger bins for recycling and general waste in the hallway, but no one likes to separate their waste at the end of the day.”
Zhang Ning said “Garbage soring is not easy but we need take patience. It’s a long way to go and it’s never too early to take action.”

A.become a big challenge B.be able to be carried out
C.become a great success D.be unable to move further
3.Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A.All misplaced garbage is also a kind of useful resource.
B.Nearly half people are not sure what recyclable garbage is.
C.Many people are impatient to sort garbage before throwing it.
D.It’s difficult to sort garbage properly, so it needs everyone’s hard work.
4.What’s the writer’s purpose of writing this passage?
A.To state the importance of garbage sorting.
B.To teach people what garbage can be recycled.
C.To call on people to take action about garbage sorting.
D.To warn people of the serious situation about garbage sorting.
(24-25九年级上·浙江绍兴·期中)October 14 was International E-Waste Day. This year, the day was focused on “invisible” (看不见的) e-waste—things most people don’t think of as electronics.
As newer and more advanced devices come out, huge amounts of electronics are thrown away, instead of being recycled. These items may be a danger to the environment because electronics can contain harmful materials like lead or mercury. If these materials get into the ground or water, the pollution can cause serious problems.
Most electronics require rare metals, like gold, copper and lithium..., which must be mined from the earth. Often the mining process creates serious pollution.
A group known as WEEE (废弃电子电气设备论坛) says that the rare metals and other materials that get thrown out as e-waste every year are worth about $57 billion. Recently, WEEE asked researchers from the UN to study a kind of e-waste that’s often unnoticed. The UN study revealed that about 1/6 of all e-waste is “invisible”, and that the value of this unseen waste is actually about $9.5 billion a year.
Though it’s “invisible”, it’s certainly not a small amount. The invisible e-waste weighs about 19.8 billion pounds. WEEE says that if this e-waste were piled into 40-ton trucks and the trucks were then lined up, the line of trucks would stretch for about 3,500 miles.
The surprising category leading the invisible e-waste group was toys. Worldwide, roughly 7.3 billion electronic toys are thrown away each year, including items like car racing sets, electric trains, musical toys, or toys with electronic parts, like dolls that speak or games with electronic timers. In all, toys make up about 35% of invisible e-waste.
▲ The report also shows that other everyday items like smoke alarms, power tools, and computer cables are also big sources of invisible e-waste. The UN report says that 35% of the world’s invisible e-waste comes from these three categories.
1.What can be learnt from the passage?
A.The electronics thrown out yearly are about $57 billion.
B.The value of the e-waste is about $ 9.5 billion every year.
C.The e-waste can be lined up for about 3,500 miles.
D.About 70% of invisible e-waste is from everyday items.
2.Which sentence can be best put in the ▲ ?
A.The electronic toys are not the only invisible e-waste.
B.The effect caused by e-waste can hardly be seen.
C.The problems are far larger than those of waste toys.
D.The invisible e-waste can be found in our daily lives.
3.The passage is mainly written to ______.
A.discuss the causes of invisible e-waste B.raise the awareness of recycling e-waste
C.introduce International B-Waste Day D.list more kinds of invisible e-waste
4.What will the author probably write about in the next part?
A.The negative influence of e-waste.
B.The main sources of invisible e-waste.
C.The different opinions on e-waste.
D.The possible ways of recycling invisible e-waste.
(24-25九年级上·福建福州·期中)The Barcelona government in Spain is banning (禁止) smoking on its beaches. From July 1, 2022, people who found smoking on the city’s beaches can be fined.
The smoking ban, covering all the beaches in the city, is to protect the environment and make sure that beach visitors in the city can enjoy a smoke-free environment, which will bring fresher air and cleaner sands.
Four of Barcelona’s beaches already became free of smoke in 2021 to test whether a larger ban would work. The government said that the decision to ban smoking on the beaches got a score of 8.2 points out of 10 from citizens (市民).
While there was no fine for smoking during the test ban, people were just asked not to smoke. “Everyone understood the situation perfectly, and we hardly have to ask someone to leave a beach and smoke somewhere else,” said Eloi Badia, a city leader of Barcelona.
The test ban also led to a large drop in the number of cigarette butts (烟蒂) that were left in the sand on those beaches. They are the most common rubbish found around the world, and can cause huge problems for the environment. They are also one of the most common causes of ocean pollution.
Barcelona has become the first main city in Spain to ban smoking on its beaches. So far, of Spain’s over 3,000 beaches, nearly 500 have already banned smoking, and the rest may not be far behind. The country is planning to ban smoking on every beach in Spain.

4.What does the underlined part “the rest may not be far behind” in the last paragraph mean?
A.The other cities are not far from Barcelona.
B.The other beaches may be free of smoke soon.
C.There is a long way to go to ban smoking in Spain.
D.Visitors should enjoy themselves far from the beaches.
5.The writer wrote the passage to ________.

1.In the first paragraph, the writer shows the topic by ________.
A.listing numbers B.giving examples C.asking a question D.making a comparison
2.The underlined phrase “get stuck” in Paragraph 3 means “________”.
【答案】1.C 2.D 3.A 4.C
