C An international team of researchers led by the University of Bristol has cast light on Earth’s earliest ecosystem, showing that within a few hundred million years of planetary formation, life on Earth was already booming (繁荣的). Everything alive today originates from a common ancestor known as LUCA(Last Universal Common Ancestor). LUCA is the assumptive common ancestor from which all modern cellular life, from single-celled organisms like bacteria to the huge redwood trees as well as us humans originates. LUCA stands for the source of the tree of life before it splits into the groups recognized today:Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya. The team compared all the genes (基因) in the genomes of living species, counting the variations that have occurred within their orders over time since they shared an ancestor in LUCA. The time of separation of some species is known from the fossil (化石) record and so the team used a genetic equivalent of the familiar equation used to calculate speed in physics to work out when LUCA existed, arriving at the answer of 4.2 billion years ago, about four hundred million years after the formation of Earth and our solar system. Next, the team worked out the biology of LUCA by modelling the physiological characteristics of living species back through the genealogy (宗谱) of life to LUCA. Lead author, Dr Edmund Moody explained, “The evolutionary history of genes is complicated by their exchange between lineages (细胞系). We have to use complex evolutionary models to harmonize the evolutionary history of genes with the genealogy of species.” Co-author Professor Philip Donoghue said, “Our work reveals insights into early Earth and life that could not be achieved by any one subject alone. It also demonstrates just how quickly an ecosystem was established on early Earth. This suggests that life may be booming on Earth-like biospheres elsewhere in the universe.” 8. What can be learned about LUCA from the text? A. It represents the root of the tree of life. B. It is only the ancestor of redwood trees. C. It was divided into two groups. D. It didn’t change much over time. 9. When did LUCA exist according to the text? A. About 4.6 billion years ago. B. About 3.8 billion years ago. C. About 4.2 billion years ago. D. About 400 million years ago. 10. What can we conclude from the text? A. LUCA was the only form of life on Earth then. B. LUCA was probably a very complex organism. C. The study of LUCA is the final step in exploring the universe. D. The formation of Earth was closely related to that of other planets. 11. What did Philip Donoghue say about their study? A. It was time-consuming. B. It was disappointing. C. It was labor-saving. D. It was meaningful. D For many of us, online shopping has made the process of purchasing goods a far simpler and more convenient process. No longer do we have to head to shops to browse through various objects, wandering round endless shelves, before finally setting for the first thing we saw. These days, we find the item we want or need online, click on it, and check out its description and, most importantly, its user reviews. If it fits the bill, we send it to our basket and pay. There seems to be a wealth of options at our fingertips. But how do we know the options that pop up in front of us really are the best deals, and how might algorithms (算法) help or hold us back? Algorithms, simply put, are mathematical instructions which tell a computer how to solve problems. When shopping is involved, what is the problem they solve? Well, they instruct a computer which advertisements to show and which products a user is most likely to buy. By analyzing the things we bought or looked at previously algorithms can predict what goods we’re most likely to be attracted by. For some people, the idea of something guessing your preferences could sound a bit worrying. But first, let’s look at the positives. By telling a computer to show us what we are interested in, it can not only save us a lot of time, but also help us find the best deals. However, there are some people who have concerns about the impact of algorithms on our shopping experience. It is possible that algorithms may only select options from a limited number of brands, or may favour products from certain companies. There are also concerns that we aren’t always shown the cheapest or best deal, even though that’s what we’re searching for. So, the takeaway from this is that algorithms are here to stay, and it’s wise to know they exist. Whenever you are shopping, be it online or off, make sure you shop around for the best deals. The first thing you see might not always be the best for you. 12. What is the main factor that leads you to buy the product online immediately? A. The reasonable price. B. Salesgirls’ description. C. Customers’ comments. D. The convenient delivery. 13. How do algorithms help customers find their favourite goods? A. The previous consuming records. B. The most advertisements they see. C. The frequency of visiting the store. D. The amount of money they spend. 14. What does the author think of algorithms used for online shopping? A. Doubtful. B. Beneficial. C. Negative. D. Worrying. 15. Which message does the author want to convey in the last paragraph? A. Many hands make light work. B. Actions speak louder than words. C. Only the feet tell if the shoes fit. D. Only comparing can see the gap. There are many customary differences between the West and the East, of which are some of China’s eating habits, which many westerners would find quite hard to understand. ____16____ Not eating food dropped on a table. They see all kinds of fish, such as lovely dolphins, huge whales and even fierce sharks. Last weekend, Jen was on beach, standing on the hot sand. Enormous waves crashed along mile after mile of beautiful sand. Rick was happy because he had a new surfboard Rick’s favorite sport is surfing. “I’m going to look at the fish underwater,” Jen waved to Rick, putting her blue rubber fins on her feet. Then she put the yellow mask and snorkel on her face. The water was warm. Jen took a big breath and dived down and down. She could see fish and plants through her mask and the fish swam all around her. Jen observed or touched the tall or small plants growing on the rocks. Some were soft and some rough. Fish live in the plants and rocks. Jen was swimming past a large rock when she saw a blue dolphin keep still. Trapped in a net around the rock, the dolphin wasn’t able to swim up to get air. Moving its fins painfully, the poor blue dolphin was dying slowly. Immediately, Jen pulled the net from the rocks and then freed the dolphin. It moved its fins quickly and swam up. It took a breath of air. The blue dolphin looked down at Jen gratefully, swimming away. On the way home, she told her brother about her adventure with the blue dolphin with great interest. The following day it was still hot, and more people swam in the sea, playing and laughing. The hot sun shone, and the water was silver and blue. Some lifeguards watched the swimmers closely as they stared at the sea in the distance. Suddenly, one shouted loudly, “Shark! Quick!” Hungry, a shark was swimming quickly towards the swimming people. Remember that and you’ll go far,” she said.( 她继续说:“我看到你身上有特别的东西。 根据最后一段“Years later, her words still remain inside of me.( 多年后,她的话仍然留在我的心里)”可知,作者从未忘记老师说的话。故选C项。 C An international team of researchers led by the University of Bristol has cast light on Earth’s earliest ecosystem, showing that within a few hundred million years of planetary formation, life on Earth was already booming (繁荣的). A About 4.6 billion years ago. A 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第二段“LUCA stands for the source of the tree of life(LUCA代表生命之树的源头) ”可知,LUCA 代表生命之树的根部。故选A项。 根据第三段“LUCA existed, arriving at the answer of 4. 2 billion years ago ( LUCA 存在于42亿年前)”可知,LUCA 存在于42亿年前。 根据第四段“The evolutionary history of genes is complicated by their exchange between lineages(细胞系). We have to use complex evolutionary models to harmonize the evolutionary history of genes with the genealogy of species.(基因的进化史由于它们在谱系之间的交换而变得复杂。 根据最后一段“Co- author Professor Philip Donoghue said, ‘Our work reveals insights into early Earth and life that could not be achieved by any one subject alone. It also demonstrates just how quickly an ecosystem was established on early Earth. This suggests that life may be booming on Earth- like biospheres elsewhere in the universe.’(合著者菲利普·多诺霍教授说:“我们的工作揭示了对早期地球和生命的洞察,这是任何一个学科都无法单独实现的。” D For many of us, online shopping has made the process of purchasing goods a far simpler and more convenient process. 13 How do algorithms help customers find their favourite goods? C 13. A 14. B 15. 根据第一段“No longer do we have to head to shops to browse through various objects, wandering round endless shelves, before finally setting for the first thing we saw. These days, we find the item we want or need online, click on it, and check out its description and, most importantly, its user reviews. If it fits the bill, we send it to our basket and pay.”(我们再也不用去商店浏览各种各样的商品,在无尽的货架上徘徊,最后才去买我们看到的第一件东西。 根据第三段“By analyzing the things we bought or looked at previously algorithms can predict what goods we’re most likely to be attracted by.”(通过分析我们之前买过或看过的东西,算法可以预测我们最有可能被什么商品吸引。) 故选A项。 根据第四段“But first, let’s look at the positives. By telling a computer to show us what we are interested in, it can not only save us a lot of time, but also help us find the best deals.”(但首先,让我们看看积极的一面。 根据最后一段“So, the takeaway from this is that algorithms are here to stay, and it’s wise to know they exist. Whenever you are shopping, be it online or off, make sure you shop around for the best deals. The first thing you see might not always be the best for you.”(所以,从这里得到的结论是,算法是存在的,知道它们的存在是明智的。 There are many customary differences between the West and the East, of which are some of China’s eating habits, which many westerners would find quite hard to understand. Everybody was frightened and began to swim towards the beach. Jen and Rick were swimming a long way from the beach. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All of a sudden, Jen saw another fin in the water. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Para. 1: Jen and Rick were swimming a long way from the beach.
