那
Heritage List. But the World Heritage List contains a lot of sites that are not so obvious. Some of
them are well known.Let's get to know a few of them.
Robben Island in South Africa
This island was used through the centuries as a prison,a hospital and a military base. But it's
probably most famous as a maximum-security prison for political prisoners in the twentieth century.
Nelson Mandela was one of its most famous residents. The WHL says it represents the triumph(

Borders of France and Spain
This is an area of great natural beauty and the mountains have many interesting geological formations.
Butitsn area of small farms.People there still use a type of agrice that used to be como n
mountainous areas of Europe but has almost completely disappeared in modern times.
The city of Brasilia,Brazil
Brasilia is a capital city that was created from nothing in 1956.The WHL calls it a landmark in
the history of town planning. The different areas of the city and the buildings themselves were all
designed at the same time so that they would harmonise with each other.Every part of the city
shows the ideas of the planner and architect.
Simien National Park,Ethiopia
Simien National Park was one of the first sites to be listed in 1978.It is one of the highest
mountain areas in Africa, and the WHL calls it one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world.
馨
It is also important for its wildlife. It is home to some rare animals, whose population is getting
smaller and smaller. That's why the site is now on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
1.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Several little known sites on the WHL.
B.The household heritage sites on the WHL.
C.Some of the unusual sites on the WHL.
D.Places of artistic and historical interest on the WHL.
89
2.Which of the following sites was listed on the WHL for its political symbol?

Before war and time destroy more of our important cultural sites,we need to
save them in 3-D digital libraries.Across 163 different countries,1,000 natural and
cultural historic places make up our most precious human heritage, which UNESCO
calls World Heritage Sites.
We lose a little of that heritage every day.War,climate change and pollution have a bad effect,
as do wind and rain. The $4 million a year that UNESCO spends on preservation is not nearly
enough to take care of even the four dozen sites considered at approaching risk of being lost forever.
Now there's a better choice.New digital-conservation technologies let us hold on to them,at least
virtually(虚拟地),through3-D scanning, modeling and digital storage.Such projects can be
accomplished through cooperation between governments, universities, industry and non-profit
organizations.
To make a 3-D model,a laser()scanner bounces light off an object and records the results.
To reproduce every corner and opening, the scanner collects overlapping()images from all
possible angles.A computer then sews them together into one large surface image and draws lines
from one point to another to create a wire-frame model.High-resolution digital cameras add color
and texture. When fully put together, the models can be viewed, printed or operated.
These scans do more than preserve a memory in a database. With highly accurate
measurements, archaeologists (can find hidden passages or reveal ancient engineering
tricks.School kids can explore places they might otherwise never see.And when a site is destroyed,
the scans can even be used to reconstruct what was there. That has already happened for one World
Heritage Site, the Kasubi Tombs in Uganda.Built of wood in 1882,they were destroyed by fire in
2010 and rebuilt in 2014,based in large part on 3-D models made in 2009.More than 100 World
Heritage Sites have been already preserved as 3-D models, and conservationists are racing to record
as many more as possible.
4.How does the author show the necessity for 3-D digital libraries in the first two paragraphs?
A.By listing the threats to our human heritage.
B.By introducing some damaged historical sites.
C.By quoting some experts'views on heritage protection.
D.By explaining UNESCO's research on World Heritage Sites.
90
5.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The function of a laser scanner.
B.The reflection of light off an object.
C.The process of making a 3-D model.
D.The development of 3-D digital technology.
6.What do we know about the Kasubi Tombs in Uganda?
A.It is metal-framed.
B.It is still in its original condition.
C.It was once destroyed in an earthquake.
D.It was reconstructed thanks to 3-D models.
7.What does the author intend to say through this text?
A.Never ignore the destructive power of war.
B.Take action to reduce pollution in historic places.
C.Take advantage of 3-D technology to keep history.
D.Invest more money to preserve World Heritage Sites.

One week after I started working in Beijing,I decided to visit a place of interest called the
Summer Palace. Before setting off,I researched into it on the Internet. The Summer Palace is
composed mostly of a lake, but it's surrounded by beautiful greenery and a walkway that circles the
lake.It is recommended that you give the Summer Palace about three hours. If you try to walk
around it,it could take five or six hours. With that knowledge of it,I set off.
The highlight of the tour had to be the view from the Tower of Buddhist Incense. It sits on top
of a large hill overlooking the lake and that is worth the climb. And in the Summer Palace, unlike
most of the other places, photography wasn't allowed in most of the buildings."No Photos"signs
could be seen beside most of the statues of Buddha and the other artifacts(手工艺品)
Another highlight was seeing the stage created for the Dowager Empress where she watched the
opera and other theatre items. There are box seats that surround the stage and it was the largest
stage created in Imperial China. You could almost imagine royalty reviewing the actors from the
boxes and the stage.
I do recommend taking a boat ride if you go,which takes you from one side of the lake to the
other side where you can see another set of buildings. And it is fun.You can also rent an electric or
paddle boat if you want. But since it was just me,I went on one of the biggest boats with other
people.
I spent another four hours wandering around the Summer Palace. But I didn't see all of it
because it was getting dark.I am looking forward to visiting it again.
8.Before setting off to the Summer Palace, the author
A.asked others about it
B.didn't think it was large
C.didn't know what to see
D.learned something about it
9.While visiting the Tower of Buddhist Incense, the author
A.walked around the lake
B.touched some artifacts
C.couldn't take photos as she liked
D.wasn't deeply impressed by it at all
91
10.What do we know about the second highlight mentioned in the text?
A.It sits on top of a hill.
B.It is the largest stage all over China.
C.Operas are performed there at times.
D.It was for the royalty to watch performances.
11.Why did the author choose to take a ride in a big boat instead of other boats?
A.Because the author was persuaded to do that.
B.Because the author wanted to be more comfortable.
C.Because the author wanted to save some money.
D.Because it was more suitable for the author to do that.

Among the seven wonders of the ancient architectural(建筑方面的)world, the pyramids in
Egypt are the only ones still standing.
For 1,000 years, they were the tallest buildings in the world.Built with prehistoric technology,
they were an architectural mystery,as strange as the Sphinx(狮身人面像).
No one really knows how they were built. The first historical record,by the Greek writer
Heroditus, came 2,000 years later.Without hard facts, there have been many theories.
Hollywood has mostly followed the examples from the Greek record:100,000 slaves worked
hard for 20 years.Others believe a very large slope snaked around the pyramids. An American
recently put forward the theory that kites could have lifted the 2-ton stones.
Now Houdin,a French architect, says that after studying the pyramids for eight years,he has
solved the mystery with the help of3-D computer animation(三维动画).He believes the pyramids
were built from the inside out through an internal slope that goes around a central point."This is
completely new.Everyone before me thought that the pyramids were built from the outside, and
only from the outside,"he said.
Scholars of ancient Egypt are interested."It's a theory which sounds reasonable.Scholars of
ancient Egypt agree it ought to be tested, and it doesn't cause damage,so I wouldn't be surprised
that within a year,we have the final answer, said Bob Brier,a scholar at Long Island University.
If that is the case,we'll know the truth about the pyramids in the blink of an eye, considering
this mystery has lasted for nearly 5,000 years.
12.According to the passage, how many ancient wonders in architecture have disappeared so far?
A.Four.
B.Five.
C.Six.
D.Seven.
13.There are many theories of how the pyramids were built because
A.researchers have different professional knowledge
B.researchers research the pyramids from different aspects
C.there are no reliable records of how the pyramids were built
D.there are many stories about how pyramids were built
92
14.The French architect Houdin put forward his theory with the help of
A.many experts
B.computer technology
C.some scholars of ancient Egypt
D.the historical record
15.The underlined phrase "in the blink of an eye"in the last paragraph probably means
A.in a short time
B.in the distant future
C.only by using your own eyes
D.in the state of uncertainty

Ways to Improve Yourself by 1%Each Day
的
Many people treat "life"as something that happens to them. They are the victim.16 And
then there are those who are clear on their goals. When something goes wrong, they are the first to
admit where they went wrong. How can you live a life by design instead of by default()?
1.Set goals and actually achieve them
17 "New Year's Resolutions"are the worst (or best)example of this. It's easy to set goals,
but very few people follow through with them to the end.People who live by design practice the
habit of setting goals and actually achieving them. This constant practice is what allows them to set
妇
bigger and bigger goals and see them through to completion.
2.Surround yourself with people you want to be like
Choose your friends carefully. As they say,"18 "Make sure that the individuals who occupy
your life and time share your values.Ideally, these people should even be a little bit ahead of you,
forcing you to stretch and continue to grow in the direction you'd like to go.
阳
3.Don't be afraid to go your own way
When you go your own way, everyone will tell you that you're wrong at first.Everyone will
point and share their opinion and then somewhere down the line, they will all come back around.
19 And they will ask you how you did it.
4.Practice discipline
In order for you to get to where you know you can go,you have to say "no"a hundred times
more than you say the word "yes".20 And the only way to do so is to have a strong sense of self-
awareness and discipline.
A.Everybody sets goals.
馨
B.They create the life they want to live.
C.Some people just don't know when to quit.
D.They will see the life you've built for yourself.
E.You must be faithful to yourself and your goal.
F.When things go wrong,it's someone else's fault.
G.You are a reflection of those who you spend the most time with.

My friend Mike is very poor. But I think he is the luckiest boy I've ever known. He is one
member of a large,happy family.
One hot day,we were going to the ball field for a big game."How hot it is today!"I said."It is
too far to walk to the ball field on a day like this. We'd better take a bus.
"Yes,it is hot, said Mike."So let's go by bus.I think it is all right for me to take a dime(-
角硬币)for the bus.”
I followed him into his house. He put his hand into a small bag hanging on the door. Then he
brought out some money. After taking one dime,he put the rest of the money back.
“Who owns the money?”I asked.“Is it all right for you to take money from the bag?”
"Yes,he smiled."This money belongs to every one of us in the family. When we children earn
money,we put it into the bag.Father puts in the most. Then when we need money,we can take it
from the bag.The money bag is Mother's idea. She thinks it will teach us to spend money carefully
and to know its real value.
"Doesn't anyone know how much you take?"I asked.
“Oh,no,”said Mike..“Mother says we must trust each other.”
"But couldn't you take out more than you need for the bus?"I asked.
学
"I could,"answered Mike."But then there might not be enough money for Jane and Fred.Someone in
our family is always needing something. If I take more than I need, there won't be enough to go around."
Paragraph 1:
“And how do you children earn money?”Iasked.
Paragraph 2:
As we were waiting for the bus,I kept thinking how lucky Mike was.
