W: I guess you’re right, but it’s hard to break a 10-year habit. I don’t know how you can read all those books from the 1880s. I’ve tried to read them and I just fall asleep after a few sentences.
M: Studies have shown that you have to read 10 pages to get interested in a book. You should stick with it for a bit longer and see if the book draws you in.
W: Hmm, I guess I should try, but I don’t know much about anything but clothes, handbags and shoes. Oh, and how to look good in front of the camera.

Working on your adventure list? These national park treasures which turn favorites during the harvest time should be on it.
Cuyahoga Valley National Park
33,000 acres of forests wait between Cleveland and Akron, all along the snaking Cuyahoga River. The park will delight you with plenty of outdoor activities suiting every interest, but do not climb over the fenced areas, rocks, or Brandy wine Falls. Now the red maple trees will be visually on fire, which you can enjoy from the comfort of the tourist railway — Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
Gateway Arch National Park
This urban park comes back thanks to the Arch’s new Museum and Visitor Center. Give your feet a break after walking over five miles of park pathways with a ride to the top of the Arch to enjoy beautiful leaves. You can even bring your dog: the park is hosting Arch Bark every October.
Gulf Islands National Seashore
Extending some 160 miles along the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico, this series of parks includes a historic building, untouched barrier islands, and sugar-white beaches. Don’t miss the Fort Pickens area, which is a perfect spot to observe wild animals living in the scenic natural environment. With an average high of 79°F and a low of 60°F, the fall weather here is exceptional.
Voyageurs National Park
Yellow and red leaves in fall will catch your eyes, contrasting with this park’s glassy waters. In the Land of 10,000 Lakes, there are no roads in the park, so visitors use boats to cross this remote 218,000-acre park. Some 100+ bird species, even the rare ones, pass through the park, so keep an eye out for them.

Harvey Sutton spent nearly seven months hiking with his parents, walking the thousands of kilometers that make up the complete Appalachian Trail. Harvey, or “little man”, was just 4 years old when he started, and celebrated his 5th birthday on the trail.
The Appalachian Trail, which many people call simply the “AT”, is a 3,530-kilometer hiking trail that runs through the forests of the Appalachian Mountains and passes through 14 states in all. Hiking the Appalachian Trail is tough, and only one out of every four hikers completes all the sections of the trail. The people who hike it must carry everything they need with them, including tents, sleeping bags and other supplies, along with food and water.
Harvey’s parents, Josh and Cassie Sutton, have been hiking with Harvey since he was two years old. They made reasonable arrangements, and especially prepared him for hiking the AT by starting out with lots of shorter walks and hikes. It took Harvey and his family 209 days to complete the entire AT. Every day the family would wake up around 5:30 in the morning. They would have breakfast and pack up their tents and sleeping bags before setting off through the woods. In general, the family hiked about 16 kilometers a day before stopping to set up camp again.
During his days on the AT, Harvey liked to use his imagination. This helped him walk more quickly and have fun while he hiked. He played games with his mom and dad and other hikers, Kart Sakas hiked with the Suttons through seven states. Mr. Sakas said Harvey didn’t seem to get tired. When other hikers were worn out at the end of the day, Harvey was still eager for a game.
Completing the AT taught Harvey and his parents how to work as a team and how to take on challenges together. Harvey has now turned 5 and has started kindergarten. But at some point in the future, he says, “I want to hike the AT again!”
24. What can we learn about hiking on the AT?
A. It takes every hiker 7 months to finish it. B. Hikers like to celebrate their birthdays on it.
C. Only a quarter of hikers finish the whole trail. D. Hikers spend lots of money hiking on it.
25. What made the Suttons’ hiking successful?
A. Using their imagination. B. Being full of energy.
C. Managing time well. D. Having good preparation.
26. What kind of person is Harvey Sutton?
A. Energetic and team-spirited. B. Imaginative and funny.
C. Naughty and tough. D. Considerate and brave.
27. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?

C
Chinese people love food made of flour, whether it be dumplings, or flatbread. In the hands of sill artisans (手艺人), flour is made into lovely models of people or animals to be enjoyed and played with, which brings a unique kind of pleasure. This art form is called dough figurine (面塑). Among the various at styles of dough figurines, Beijing’s Dough Figurine Lang is a unique folk art, which is filled with the rich history and customs of the capital city. Their delicate and lovely handicrafts are storytellers of old and new Beijing. In 2008, it was included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.
It was created by Lang Shao’an. Most of the dough figurines are animals and characters from legends, historical stories, and local operas. The finished product is either put at the end of a thin stick, or on a table for display. Some are mostly for children to eat or play with, with simple forms and vivid decorations, while some are delicate pieces of artwork for display only. For this reason, during the making process they are often mixed with additives (添加剂) to prevent them from breaking up, being eaten by insects or growing moldy. Over the course of his long career, Lang Shao’an developed a set of sill fingers with an elegant artistic sense.
Lang Jiaziyu, born in 1995, is the third-generation inheritor of Dough Figurine Lang. When he was 15, he created Beijing Olympic Mascot shaped dough figurines which were highly praised. He looks a bit more fashionable than other folk artisans. In his skilled hands, pop culture icons such as figures based on Marvel comics characters and Chinese mythological figure Nezha with smoky makeup, are resonating with young people.
Like most of the other intangible cultural heritage handicrafts in China Dough Figurine Lang does not get as much attention from the public. Few young people are willing to take the time to master a skill that does not make money, which has led to a decline in the number of those who are devoted to the handicraft. Good handicrafts need the devotion of artisans from one generation to another.
28. What is special about Dough Figurine Lang?
A. It reflects Beijing’s culture.
B. It is created by many famous artists.
C. It shows people’s lifestyles and beliefs.
D. It is popular with both tourists and the locals.
29. Why do artisans add additives to dough figurines?
A. To make dough figurines taste good.
B. To keep colors brighter and last longer.
C. To help shape dough into various forms.
D. To better preserve the finished products.
30. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. Suggestions for other folk artisans.
B. Different art styles of dough figurines.
C. Lang Jiaziyu’s achievements as an artisan.
D. The popularity of modern dough figurines.
31. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To call on people to master a skill.
B. To appeal to people to value this folk art.
C. To teach people ways to appreciate the handicraft.
D. To persuade people to protect national cultural heritage.
A 29. D 30. C 31. B

D
Our ability to collect data gets far ahead of our ability to fully use it, yet data may hold the key to solving some of the biggest global challenges facing us today.
Take, for instance, the frequent outbreaks of waterborne diseases as a consequence of war or natural disasters. The most recent example can be found in the country, where roughly 10,000 new suspected cases of cholera(霍乱) are reported each week — and history is filled with similar stories. What if we could better understand the environmental factors that contributed to the disease, predict which communities are at higher risk, and put in place protective measures to stop the spread? Answers to this question and others like it could potentially help us prevent a catastrophe.
As a big data scientist, I studied data from wide-ranging, public sources to identify patterns, hoping to predict trends that could be a threat to global security. Various data streams are important because the ground truth data (such as surveys) is often delayed, limited, incorrect or, sometimes, nonexistent.
For example, knowing the incidence(发生率) of mosquito-borne disease in communities would help us predict the risk of mosquito-spread disease such as dengue, the leading cause of illness and death in the tropics. However, mosquito data at a global (and even national) level is not accessible.
To address this gap, we’re using other sources such as satellite pictures, climate data and population information to forecast the risk of dengue. Specifically, we had success in predicting the spread of dengue in Brazil at the regional, state and city level using these data streams as well as clinical observation data and online searchers that used terms related to the disease. While our predictions aren’t perfect, they show promise.
Similarly, to forecast the flu season, we have found that online searches can complement(补充) clinical data. Because the rate of people searching the internet for flu symptoms often increases during their beginning, we can predict a sharp increase in cases where clinical data delays. All of this shows the potential of big data. The information is there; now it’s time to use it.
32. What do the examples in paragraphs 2 and 4 show?
A. Big data is still hard to get and use.
B. People aren’t skilled at dealing with big data.
C. Big data is not always an imagined method.
D. Catastrophes might be prevented with big data.
33. According to the text, survey data .
A. is a main form of multiple data streams
B. is an effective way to collect information
C. is sometimes unreliable and unavailable
D. is a timely alternative to multiple data streams
34. What does the underlined part “this gap” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The lack of big data on mosquitoes.
B. The lack of different data streams.
C. The risk of an outbreak of a disease.
D. The ignorance of how a disease spreads.
35. What’s the best title of the text?
A. How do we collect and use data?
B. What are the challenges facing us now?
C. How can big data help save the world?
D. What is the answer to preventing catastrophes?
D 33. C 34. A 35. C
根据第二段“Answers to this question and others like it could potentially help us prevent a catastrophe.”
根据第三段中的“Various data streams are important because the ground truth data (such as surveys) is often delayed, limited, incorrect or, sometimes, nonexistent.”
根据画线部分前面一段中的“However, mosquito data at a global (and even national) level is not accessible.” 再结合下文的弥补措施we’re using other sources such as satellite pictures, climate data and population information to forecast the risk of dengue. 故选A项。
文章第一段就是本文的中心段,第一段“Our ability to collect data gets far ahead of our ability to fully use it, yet data may hold the key to solving some of the biggest global challenges facing us today.”

What is culture? Culture is too complex to define in simple terms. ____36____ One is that culture is a total pattern of behaviour that is consistent in its components. Another fundamental is that culture is learned behaviour. The third is that culture is behaviour that is shared by a group of people.
To understand the culture of a particular country or region, one could examine its components, among which are material culture, language, and social organization. Material culture includes the tools and symbols in a society, not including those physical things found in nature, unless they have undergone some change or have been given meaning by people. ____37____ The way we consume and what we consume are heavily influenced by material culture.
____38____ Linked with all other aspects of culture, it reflects the nature and values of that culture. Industrialized societies have a rich vocabulary for commercial and industrial activities, while less industrialized societies may have richer vocabularies for matters important to their societies. The Eskimos in Alaska have many words to describe snow whereas English has only one general term.
Social organization differs somewhat from society to society. The primary kind of community association is based on blood ties. ____39____ It provides mutual protection, psychological support and a kind of economic insurance or social security for its members. The term “brothers” in Zaire includes those whom we call cousins and uncles.
Cultural analysis serves a variety of purposes. Understanding the various dimensions and their inter-relatedness helps promote cross-cultural awareness. ____40____
A. Language is the most obvious difference between cultures.
B. Some scholars even suggest that it is useless to try.
C. The values represented within a culture can also change with the passing of time.
D. However, there are certain agreed-on fundamentals that can be easily identified.

D 37. F 38. A 39. E 40. G
根据后文“One is that culture is a total pattern of behaviour that is consistent in its components. Another fundamental is that culture is learned behaviour. The third is that culture is behaviour that is shared by a group of people.(一是文化是一种行为的整体模式,其组成部分是一致的。另一个基本原则是,文化是后天习得的行为。第三,文化是一群人共同的行为)”可知,这三种基本原则正是对D项“However, there are certain agreed-on fundamentals that can be easily identified.(然而,在一些容易确定的基本原则上存在某些共识)”中“there are certain agreed-on fundamentals”的详细说明。故选D。
前文“Material culture includes the tools and symbols in a society, not including those physical things found in nature, unless they have undergone some change or have been given meaning by people.(物质文化包括社会中的工具和符号,不包括自然界中的物质,除非它们经历了一些变化或被人们赋予了意义)”在讲解物质文化包括的内容,F项“For example, a mouse running on a street is not part of a culture, but the Mickey Mouse is.(例如,街上的老鼠不是文化的一部分,但米老鼠却是)”是对物质文化的举例。故选F。
根据第二段的第一句“To understand the culture of a particular country or region, one could examine its components, among which are material culture, language, and social organization.(要了解一个特定国家或地区的文化,可以考察其组成部分,其中包括物质文化、语言和社会组织)”可知,其后的内容是按照物质文化、语言和社会组织三方面进行阐述的,设空处前一段已对物质文化做了解释,按照文章逻辑此段内容应为语言,A项“Language is the most obvious difference between cultures.(语言是不同文化之间最明显的差异)”从整体上概述了语言特征,且从后文中出现的“vocabulary”和“words”也可看出,本段在讲述语言。故选A。.
后文“It provides mutual protection, psychological support and a kind of economic insurance or social security for its members.(它为其成员提供相互保护、心理支持和经济保险或社会保障)”中的“mutual protection, psychological support and a kind of economic insurance or social security for its members”是对E项“In many developing countries, the extended family fulfils several social and economic roles.(在许多发展中国家,大家庭承担着多种社会和经济角色)”中“several social and economic roles”的列举。故选E。
根据前文“Understanding the various dimensions and their inter-relatedness helps promote cross-cultural awareness.(了解各方面及其相互关系有助于提高跨文化意识)”可知,了解文化的构成是有好处的,G项“It leads on to the promotion of goodwill, social and economic planning and harmony between social groupings or societies.(它促进善意、社会和经济规划以及社会团体或社会之间的和谐)”中的it指代“了解文化构成”,承接前文,继续说这样可以带来的好处。
Every Chinese-language textbook starts out with the standard phrases for greeting people. But as an American, I always found myself unable to speak freely when it came to ____41____ guests at the door. Just a goodbye would not do, yet that was all I had ever ____42____ the books. So I would smile and nod, bowing like a Japanese and searching ____43____ for words that would smooth over the visitors’ leaving and make them feel they would be ____44____ to come again. In my unease, I often hid behind the skirts of my Chinese husband's kindness.
Then finally, listening to others, I began to pick up the phrases that eased relationships and sent people off not only successfully but also skillfully.
The parting for the Chinese includes a lot of necessary habitual practice. Although as a ____45____ I’m not expected to observe or even know all the rules, I’ve had to learn the expressions of politeness and ____46____ at a leave-taking.
The Chinese feel they are ____47____ to see a guest off to the farthest possible point-down the flight of stairs to the street below or perhaps all the way to the nearest bus stop. I’ve sometimes waited half an hour or more for my husband to ____48____ from seeing a guest off, ____49____ he’s gone to the bus stop and waited for the next bus to arrive.
That’s all very well, but when I’m the guest being seen off, my polite refusals are always ___50___ . My hostess or host, or both, insist on seeing me down the stairs and well on my way, with my repeating the “Don’t trouble to see me off” at every landing. If I try to go fast to discourage them from following, they are simply out to the discomfort of having to run after me. Better to ____51____ the inevitable.
Besides, that’s going against Chinese ____52____, because haste (doing things quickly) is to be avoided. What do you say when you ___53___ someone? People often say “Go slowly” ____54____ “Farewell”. To the Chinese it means “Take care” or “Watch your ____55____ ”, or some such caution, but translated literally it means “Go slowly”.

分析句子结构可知,that people worldwide are getting heavier和that most of the rise is due to gains in BMI in rural areas.
increase by表示“增加了”;increase to表示“增加到”。

It was an evening in July. The skies were darker than normal. Rain fell in big drops, thunder crashed in and lightning flashed across the skies. I shook with cold and fear as I walked through the streams of muddy water. Cars moved slowly because of the traffic jam, while passers-by were rushing by, completely wet in the heavy rain.
Along the way, I saw some schoolchildren grasping their heavy schoolbags and heading home. As more thunder crashed and boomed, I also sped up. Near a crossing, some road repair work was left unfinished. Obviously the workers had left in a hurry because of the storm. There were a few warning signs but it was hard to see what they said and what was on the road. I took a pace towards them — there were pieces of wood and metal as well as a hole which now was half-covered with boards.
I carefully avoided the possible danger and moved on. Seconds later I stopped as I heard some sounds. They sounded like crying. I turned around, held my breath and listened, trying to figure out where the sounds were coming from, but all I could hear was the wind and the rain. “Maybe it is just the wind,” I thought to myself and was about to leave.
“Help!” a loud and desperate scream came behind. Quickly, I turned back and traced the sound to where it had come from. My eyes fell on the place. It was horrible — one young child had fallen into the gaping hole in the road. My heart grew heavier. The boards had been moved away by the force of the rushing water and wind. I could barely see the child as it was dark all around me. I tried to save him, but all my efforts were in vain (徒劳). “Don’t panic!” I pretended to be calm and shouted at the top of my voice. “I’ll soon get you out of there.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
I suddenly thought of a friend who lived nearby. Without hesitation, I called him telling him about the situation. He readily said he would get some tools. Besides, he asked his neighbor, who had worked as a rescuer to come along with him. Minutes later, we managed to get the child out. Fortunately, there were only some minor injuries, but he was trembling with fear and cold, failing to speak any words. We immediately sent him to hospital. After he calmed down, he told us his parents’ phone number and we informed his parents at once.
Paragraph 2:
The parents of the child arrived at the hospital quickly. They were totally shocked to hear of what had happened. Knowing their son was safe, they walked to us, expressing their gratitude to us again and again and insisting on offering us some gifts. But we left secretly after everything was OK. It was a wonderful memory, one I will never forget. I was glad and proud that I had been part of that act. Though the wind continued when I went home, I felt much warmer.

A Energetic and team-spirited. B. Imaginative and funny.
C. Naughty and tough. D. Considerate and brave.
27. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. The AT—A Challenging Trail B. Why Do People Like Hiking?
C. Hiking—Suttons’ Hobby D. The Little Man’s 209 Hiking Days

Like most of the other intangible cultural heritage handicrafts in China, Dough Figurine Lang does not get as much attention from the public.

Seconds later, I stopped as I heard some sounds.
