(23-24九年级上·江苏扬州·期末)You are running around in the park. But then suddenly, you fall and hurt yourself. “Ow!” you cry. This sound is very familiar to us all. Crying out when we get hurt is a natural reaction. But what is it about this sound that makes us shout it out?
Scientists from the National University of Singapore now believe they’ve found the answer. The effort of shouting the word “ow” actually interferes (干预) with pain messages traveling to the brain. So by shouting it out, it distracts us from the feeling of pain.
The scientists tested how long volunteers could hold their hands in very cold water. There were five rounds of the test. In the first round, they were allowed to shout “ow” when they felt pain. In another round, they had to stay silent.
The results showed that volunteers were able to keep their hands in the cold water for longer when they were allowed to shout out. They managed around 30 seconds on average, five seconds more than when they had to remain silent.
“We found that a simple vocal act such as saying ‘ow’ helps individuals deal with pain,” the report from the scientists stated.
What’s more, expressions of pain are shared among languages. While cries of “ow” or “ouch” are heard in English, South Africans yell “eina”, Italians shout “ahia” and Chinese “aiyo”.
Scientists said in the report: “Shared among these languages is a sound during which the mouth simply opens, the tongue lies flat (水平的) and the lips unrounded. It is a simple sound that requires little control while maximizing (充分利用) the volume.” So these sounds are useful to shout if we feel pain.

C.Volunteers stayed longer in cold water in the first round than in the second.
D.Volunteers all shouted the “ow” sound out in the test.
4.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Any language is more exciting when we feel pain.
B.Shouting out is useful and helpful if you feel pain.
C.We should shout every day to stay healthy.

At present, there are no such AI tools or robots. But scientists have been working to improve AI models. Some recent models can create realistic photos from a short written description. Others can recreate anyone’s voice based on a voice recording just a few seconds long.
The AI tool that has got the most attention recently is ChatGPT, created by the company OpenAI. When asked a question, ChatGPT answers quickly in perfect sentences. It can make up stories and games, write articles, program computers, and much more. ChatGPT appears to be very intelligent (智能的). But in fact, ChatGPT is simply guessing—based on its training information—which word is most likely to come next, over and over again.
In March, OpenAI developed a more powerful model, called GPT-4. GPT-4 can create and explain jokes, and pass tests that are difficult for humans. The rapid progress of recent AI models worries some people. In late March, many computer experts (专家) wrote a letter calling for a six-month pause (暂停) for any work on AI tools.
The letter says AI companies race to create smart AI tools that no one can “understand, predict, or...control”. The group behind the letter wants governments to develop laws to make sure AI tools are safe.
ChatGPT has caused so much excitement that many companies are likely to keep developing smart AI tools. But the letter has sent a strong warning that many people, including leaders will be thinking about carefully.

(23-24九年级上·江苏盐城·期末)If you’ve never heard of mineral-color painting (岩彩画), you’re not alone. This form of art is unknown to most people—even many art lovers. It is an ancient form of painting that is being given new life these days.
This kind of art is created using materials like rock powder (粉末), colored soil and sand. It can be traced back to the 3rd-century Kucha Grotto murals (龟兹石窟壁画) of Xinjiang. Yet after the Song and Yuan dynasties, with ink wash painting becoming more and more popular, mineral-color art gradually fell out of fashion.
During the Sui and Tang dynasties, some countries sent envoys (使节) to China to learn all kinds of things. “They loved mineral-color art and took the art form back to their own country,” said Miao Tong. The artist has been studying this traditional art form for years.
In the 1980s, many Chinese artists decided to revive this traditional art form in China. In the 1990s, they renamed it “mineral-color art”.
For Miao, the greatest joy in his work is to find the “right earth” to make mineral pigments (颜料). “Every year I go to Wuyi Mountain. It is known for its Danxia land formation (丹霞地貌),” he said. “You can’t imagine how beautiful the earth is there. It is naturally colored in red, green, yellow, purple, etc.”
But this soil cannot be directly applied to his works. It first has to go through a number of steps, including washing, filtering (过滤) and sun-drying. After that the soil will be mixed together with a certain kind of glue. According to the artist, one mineral-color painting may take several weeks to several months to complete.
The mineral pigments are able to stay safe from the effects of UV light (紫外线). Therefore, their color does not fade (褪色) over time. That’s why, even after thousands of years, the cave paintings in the Kucha Grottos are still very bright and colorful.

(23-24九年级上·江苏扬州·期末)When you open a certain mobile app, there’s usually an open-app advertisement that gets in your way. Some of these ads can send you to another app if you shake your phone a bit. And this has been causing heated discussion online recently.
These open-app ads act like “doors”—no matter which app you open, you may always end up in those apps that have more ads. During online shopping festivals, for example, users are usually led to shopping apps like Taobao and JD.
There are already a number of rules on this problem. A rule that came out in December 2022 gave specific requirements for how these “shake-to-open” ads should operate. It said that the rotation angle (旋转角度) of the phone should be larger than 35 degrees, and the time spent shaking the phone should be longer than 3 seconds. Starting from May, the ads must have a clear button to let users to close them.
However, putting these regulations into action can be difficult. The total number of apps is large, making it hard to look into every app. There were at least 2.59 million new apps in January and February alone, reported Nanfang Daily.
However, this shouldn’t be the reason for the mobile apps to step out of these “lines” and take advantage. That way, what all the platforms (平台) really get is people’s complaints. Over 90 percent of users strongly dislike such open-app ads, according to the Jiangsu Consumer Council.
Such ads hurt an app’s reputation (声誉) because fewer users may want to use them after being taken to other apps too many times. To attract the users, the apps should respect their choices and provide them with ads that they can choose to click on only if they want to.
1.What does the phrase “gets in your way” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Prevents you from entering the app. B.Leads you to another app.
C.Forces you to buy something useless. D.Steals your personal information.
2.In Paragraph 2, Taobao and JD are used as examples of ________.
A.apps that have open-app ads
B.apps that open-app ads lead to
C.apps that were discussed heatedly recently
D.apps that many people go shopping online with
3.It is difficult to put these rules into action because ________.
A.it’s difficult to manage the app developers B.users really need these open-app ads
C.apps have more new ways to present ads D.it’s hard to make rules for all apps
4.What is probably the writer’s opinion?
A.More ads will give apps good rules.
B.Users mind products more than ads in apps.
C.Apps should let users decide whether to open the ads.
D.Apps have made too much money from open-app ads.

In fact, ▲ . That’s because touching changes their genes and, even worse, can slow their growth. Professor Jim Whelan of the La Trobe Institute in Australia gave an explanation. “The lightest touch from a human, or even plants touching each other in the wind, leads to a huge gene change in the plant.”
In order to test the idea, the scientists did an experiment on plants. They grew a number of plants to the age of four weeks. Then they touched them with a paintbrush every 12 hours over a 36-hour period. They found that as a result, the mitochondria (线粒体) in the plants had been partly hurt. The mitochondria are the “powerhouse of the cell”. The mitochondria produce energy for the rest of the cell in both animals and plants. If this “powerhouse” is weakened, the plants will lose a large amount of energy that should have supported their growth. Whelan further explained, “If the touching is repeated, then plant growth is reduced by up to 30 percent.” According to Science Alert, repeated touching or moving plants will make them grow shorter than others.
Although the touching does have a strong effect on plants, it’s not always bad. The researches believe, in some ways, it could be helpful. It may help plants fight against insects and bad weather. The new research findings have led to a deeper understanding of the plants’ reply to touching. And the research might also “open up new ways to optimize (优化) growth in the future.” Science Alert reported.

William Wilkie Collins (1824—1889) was an English short-story writer. Most of his stories were seen in magazines. He was good at making just enough suspense (悬念) to keep the readers interested in the following part in the next week’s magazine. Make no mistake—The Moonstone is not a “short” story. Nearly three times as long as a detective novel, it will take some time to get to the bottom of it.
But that does not make it boring. In fact, it just adds to its complicated plots. Told through 11 different voices, Wilkie Collins’ novel is a classic mystery that will leave you guessing and guessing again until the final pages. Written in 1868, using only what they know. That means the reader is always filling in the gaps as the story goes on, wanting to know what happens next.
The story is about a large, yellow diamond called the moonstone. The stone is very sacred (神圣的) in India. It was first stolen from India in 1799. It finds its way to a young English girl named Rachel about 50 years later. But on the night of her 18th birthday, it is stolen again!

(23-24九年级上·江苏宿迁·期末)Water is important for all living things on Earth. The water cycle is a natural process that takes water from the ground and the sky and brings it back to the earth again. It is a cycle that happens the whole year and is most active from March to May in China. In this article, we will explore the water cycle and discuss its importance for Earth.
The water cycle always begins with water vapour (蒸汽). When it’s hot outside, you can see clouds forming in the sky. These clouds are made of water vapour that comes from the ground, plants and rivers. As water vapour rises into the sky, it cools down and becomes clouds. After that, clouds travel through the sky and fall back to Earth as rain or snow. Then, water runs through rivers and oceans and finally returns to the earth again in different forms like rainwater or snow.
The water cycle plays an important role in protecting our Earth’s climate. It provides us with water to drink and keeps our climate healthy. On top of that, it takes water from rivers and oceans and brings it to the areas that don’t have enough water. Without the cycle, we would face many problems. When there is too much water in one place, it becomes a flood. When water is badly in need, it becomes a drought (旱灾). Besides, water vapour can take heat from the sun and keep our planet cool.
The water cycle is a natural process that keeps our planet alive. It’s important for plants and animals to drink water and for our rivers to stay flowing with water. Understanding the water cycle can help us enjoy the beauty of nature, know how our planet works and develop better methods to protect our Earth. And that is a responsibility (责任) we should take on.

(23-24九年级上·江苏宿迁·期末)Big data (大数据) is a lot of sets (组) of information that are put together, so they can be used by a computer program. The program looks for different kinds of answers in the data. Big data can have different kinds of information from many sources (来源), such as information that comes from schools, social media sites, companies and governments. One set of data can have people’s names and addresses. Another set can have what they like, where they go to school, and how much time they spend on the computer.
Big data can be used in many ways. The government uses it to understand how many people travel on buses or trains. This information is then used to make bus or train systems better. Some schools use big data to understand which children may need extra help in class. The teacher can then give certain students more help or support so they can succeed in school. Companies use big data, too. It helps them understand who buys their products. For example, one company uses weather data to see when people eat the most ice cream.
Big data can be used for good reasons. Some hospitals use big data to predict (预测) if a baby who is born too early will get sick. The hospital can then take extra action to take care of that baby, so the baby does not get sick. Big data can also be used for bad reasons. Grass on the Ancient Plain (草原) in Farewell (告别) to a Friend By Bai Juyi
Wild grasses spread over ancient plain;
With spring and fall they come and go.
Wild fire can’t burn them up again;
They rise when vernal breezes blow.
Their fragrance overruns the way;
Their green invades the ruined town.
To see my friend go far away;
My sorrow grows like grass overgrown.
The poem “Grass on the Ancient Plain in Farewell to a Friend” is a famous poem by Bai Juyi of the Tang Dynasty. (23-24九年级上·江苏苏州·期末)①More and more people believe that technologies are great for learning. Today, such teaching tools as iPads are used in a lot of courses, including language, history and science.
②Many teachers are supporters of using iPads in language learning. They say that students now have much more time for discussion in the classroom. Instead of spending valuable class time listening to texts or watching teaching videos, students can do this on their own and come to class prepared for discussion.
③The teachers also say that iPads allow students to learn at their own pace. Some students might listen to a conversation only once and understand it, so they can save time for doing other things. Other students, however, might need to listen to the same conversations again and again to understand it. Using iPads is especially helpful to students who are learning a language at different paces.
④The students who are using the new tool in some courses are also happy. They believe that using iPads is a more enjoyable way to learn (such as listening to stories and watching movies) . The class has become much more interesting and creative.
⑤There are other advantages for students. By using iPads, they can pay more attention to the material and learn more. Teaching notes are stored in their iPads and are easy to find. Some students spend more time studying now. “I can listen to my language material or watch teaching videos on the bus, instead of having to wait until I get home,” a student explained.
⑥Many adults complain that technologies such as iPads are doing harm to students. They worry that students might use iPads to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. Some believe that iPads may separate students from each other. If a student spends more time watching videos on an iPad, he will have fewer opportunities to have face-to-face communication with others.
⑦However, technologies are already a part of most students’ day-to-day lives. As for cheating, teachers can ask students to hand in their iPads when they take exams. Education needs to make changes with the times as technology is playing an important part. We should look forward to a wonderful future when iPads and other technologies can add a lot to the classroom.
1.What does the expression “at their own pace” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.According to their own timetable. B.Without their teachers’ help.
C.Because of their wonderful goals. D.Against their parents’ hope.
2.According to the passage, which is one of the reasons, why some adults feel worried about technologies used in education?

A.teachers can take control of students’ learning B.exam results depend a lot on new technology

1.What does the underlined word “distracts” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.表达 B.分散 C.增加 D.消失
2.According to the passage, the scientists found ________.
A.pain messages don’t travel to the brain
B.a simple sound such as saying “ow” makes people happy
C.people in different countries express pain in the same language
D.shouting out “ow” reduces the feeling of pain
3.What do we know about the test?
A.Volunteers were allowed to shout out in every round.
B.Volunteers felt less pain when they weren’t allowed to shout out.
D.People shout to better express their feelings.

(23-24九年级上·江苏常州·期末)Most people have probably seen a movie about an AI (人工智能) tool or a robot (机器人) that has become so smart that it can control the world.

【答案】1.A 2.A 3.D 4.C

1.词义猜测题。根据下文“Some of these ads can send you to another app if you shake your phone a bit.” 故选A。
2.推理判断题。根据第二段“These open-app ads act like ‘doors’—no matter which app you open, you may always end up in those apps that have more ads.” 故选A。
3.细节理解题。根据第四段“The total number of apps is large, making it hard to look into every app.”可知,应用程序的总数很大,很难查看每个应用程序,所以这些规定付诸实施可能很困难。故选D。

(23-24九年级上·江苏扬州·期末)When we see babies or pets, we can’t help gently touching them to show our love. And they give us happy feelings back. But a recent study shows that it’s different for plants.
Grass on the Ancient Plain (草原) in Farewell (告别) to a Friend By Bai Juyi
Wild grasses spread over ancient plain;
With spring and fall they come and go.
Wild fire can’t burn them up again;
They rise when vernal breezes blow.
Their fragrance overruns the way;
Their green invades the ruined town.
To see my friend go far away;
My sorrow grows like grass overgrown.
