It was January in Kansas. The snowstorm hit, cutting off our power. So, though it was around noon, we were put into darkness. No television, no heat, no light. No nothing. This was back in the days when people had only radios to listen to.
Granddad Charlie gathered up his winter coat, scarf, and gloves, and disappeared into the snow. A few minutes later, he returned, with wood under his arms. Looking at my brother and me, he said, “Come on, boys. Time to build a fire.”
But the curiosity for the fire wasn’t enough to keep the attention of a 7-year-old boy and a 5-year-old boy, and we were soon badgering Grandpa repeatedly as to what was next. “There’s no TV, Grandpa,” I complained, “What are we going to do?”
“Let’s go camping.” Grandpa answered.
We ran upstairs to get our sleeping bags, pillows, and stuffed animals back. When we returned, Grandpa had rearranged the furniture, clearing an open space in front of the fire. In short order, we had a fine campground.
“Now then,” Grandpa began, opening a strange-looking game board, “who’s up for a little game of checkers?”
For the next hour or so, Grandpa taught us on the fine art of playing checkers. I became a fair player after losing four games in a row. Then, surprisingly, I beat Grandpa. When I asked him if he had let me win, he merely smiled.
Checkers was soon followed up with hangman. Afterward, Grandpa found his old, weathered guitar and sang us some campfire songs, the words to which my brother and I did not know but to which we sang along.
And right then, something terrible happened. The power came back on.
Mom and Dad gave a cheer. But for my brother and me, it was the end of a grand adventure. We stood there, speechless. Grandpa looked at us, smiled, and then slowly, he walked across the room and turned the light off.

On September 7, 1930, Yuan Longping was born in Beijing. Fluent in English, his mother often read Friedrich Nietzsche’s works to him. Influenced by his mother, Yuan Longping liked English, geography and chemistry at school. After graduating from university, he became a teacher in the countryside of Hunan in 1953.
With lots of crop failures, nationwide hunger hit China in the 1960s, making many people live a bad life. Yuan was sad and felt he must do something. Since the climate in Hunan was not friendly to growing wheat, he decided to devote himself to studying how to increase the production of rice, a basic food for over 60 percent of Chinese people. From then on, he began a lifelong connection with rice.
Yuan Longping succeeded in growing the world’s first high production hybrid rice (杂交水稻) variety in 1973, which could reach a yield of over 500 kg per mu, more than 200 kg than before. For the next four decades, he continued to work on the research of hybrid rice. In 2020, hybrid rice developed by his team achieved 1,500 kg per mu in two growing seasons, a new world record.
Nowadays, the hybrid rice is grown in almost half of China’s rice fields and its production accounts for 60 percent of the total rice production in China. The hybrid rice production is 20 percent more than the common kinds, the yearly increase of which feeds up to 100 million people.
In 2019, Yuan Longping, known as the “Father of hybrid rice”, was awarded with Medal of the Republic, China’s highest honor.
Yuan Longping’s biggest dream in life was to develop more hybrid rice varieties, which could be grown all over the world to help solve the global food problem. So far, the hybrid varieties he developed have been grown in over 40 countries, including the USA, Brazil and India.

It’s common that a Japanese-American bows on the phone — but only in Japanese. Behaviors and manners can become so routine that they appear even when there’s no need for them. Those who are bilingual (双语的) and bicultural know first-hand that how we behave can depend on what language we are speaking. Scientists have shown that who you are in the moment can depend on the language you are using at that time.
This is because when you have an experience, the language you are using becomes associated with it. For bilingual people, this means certain memories are more closely associated with one language than the other — a phenomenon called “language-dependent memory”. For example, a childhood memory is more likely to be remembered when the language spoken during that childhood event is spoken again.
How we think and feel can thus change depending on what language we are using. For example, people who are bilingual have an intensified (增强的) stress response when listening to the words of scolding in a native language. This may be, in part, because our early memories associated with learning a “bad” word or being scolded by our parents happened in our native language.
Because emotions play a key role in how we make decisions, people are often more sensible when making choices in the less emotional foreign language. Language can even influence our decisions. When asked whether they would be willing to give one person’s life to save a group, people who speak more than one language are much more likely to say “yes” when answering in a foreign language. The unpleasant feelings that can prevent us from making difficult choices are reduced when we’re using a non-native language.
The language we speak has an influence on how we think, feel, and even behave. In a way, knowing different languages can provide people with a variety of views through which to see the world.
52. Why is the example of the Japanese-American mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To show Japanese people are polite. B. To show bowing is good manners.
C. To show culture affects a person greatly. D. To show language affects a person’s behavior.
53. Why is a “language-dependent memory” so called?
A. Memories are greatly influenced by a certain language.
B. A childhood memory can be recalled in a certain language.
C. A good memory can help you learn a language well.
D. A language can determine a person’s memory.
54. When can a person who is bilingual make a wise decision?
A. When speaking a native language. B. When speaking a foreign language.
C. When making a random choice. D. When feeling very delighted.
55. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. The language you are speaking determines your character.
B. You can be influenced by the language you are speaking.
C. A new language can bring out a new self.
D. The more languages we learn, the better future we will have.

How important is homework? According to the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), it’s not that important! The district has made a big change for the 2011-2012 school year. It started on July 1. Homework accounts for only 10% of a student’s grade. The district, the second largest in the country, says its new way can provide a fairer assessment (评定) of students’ homework and achievements.
The district hopes students only need to spend less time on homework and more time on hobbies and with their families. By reducing the weight of homework toward a student’s grade, a truer picture of the student’s knowledge will be shown in the achievement grade.
However, it doesn’t mean the students can throw out homework. It says that homework is a chance for students to practice their skills and a tool for students to prepare for coming lessons. Still, LAUSD is joining a growing list of schools that have controlled the amount of homework.
How much time children should spend on homework is a hot topic. Harris Cooper, a professor at a university, says that the proper amount of homework time is ten minutes a day multiplied by (乘以) the student’s grade. This means a third grader should spend 30 minutes a day on homework. And a sixth grader would spend 60 minutes. “Good homework in the proper amount will have better effects on them,” he said. “Bad homework or too much homework will have worse effects.”
But some people think homework is an important part of learning. They say many children just won’t try their best if homework doesn’t count toward their grade. Some teachers also think homework is important. They argue that students who do their homework perform better on tests and in school than those who do not. They are afraid that the new way will encourage students to pay less attention to homework.

W: Hmm. That’s a possibility.
M: Or, of course, you could cook at the dorm.
W: But I don’t have a car for the groceries.

17. What is the speaker mainly talking about?
A. Whether flying is the most dangerous way to travel.
B. What is the most expensive means of transport.
C. Why there are many plane crashes.

20. Why do plane crashes usually get the most attention?
A. There are usually lots of deaths in every plane crash.
B. People are interested in news about plane crashes.
C. There are many plane crashes per year.
A 18. B 19. C 20. A
M: The fear of flying has risen in the past few years. Millions of people get the news of air crash when it happens. What the media doesn’t show the world is other automobile accidents. This causes many Americans to drive rather than fly, but is driving really a safer way to travel than flying? Research over the past several years has shown that flying is in fact the safest method of transportation. A study in the Newsweek magazine testing deaths per 100 million miles for different forms of transportation, found that cars have 0.94 deaths per 100 million miles traveled, while trains have 0.04 deaths and planes and buses each come out the same with 0.01 deaths per 100 million miles traveled.
When you look at the data, you see that there are hundreds of automobile accidents daily across the United States, but only a small percent of these crashes involve deaths. On the other hand, there are very few aircraft crashes in the United States per year, but when there is a crash, there is usually a fairly large loss of life involved. And nearly every large plane that crashes anywhere makes the front page headline in nearly every newspaper across the world.

根据文章Travel arrangements:部分中“Day 1 Fly to Kruger National Park, Sunset game drive (第一天飞往克鲁格国家公园,日落之旅)”和“On arrival, you will be sent to Arathusa Safari Lodge in Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, where you’ll spend 3 nights. 【43题详解】

B
44. Which is TRUE according to the first 3 paragraphs?
A. The children were curious about building the fire.
B. The story happened on a cold winter evening.
C. The children were excited about the power failure.
D. The children didn’t like the fire and couldn’t wait to go camping.
45. Why did Grandpa turn off the light in the last paragraph?
A. To create a sense of holiday. B. To save as much energy as he can.
C. To remind the family to go to bed. D. To maintain a camp atmosphere.
46. Which of the following best describes Grandpa?
A. Imaginative and brave. B. Caring and understanding.
C. Intelligent and curious. D. Experienced and generous.
47. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Our Respectable Grandpa B. Our Harmonious Family
C. An Unforgettable Camping D. A Terrible Snowstorm
A 45. D 46. B 47. C
由文章第三段中“But the curiosity for the fire wasn’t enough to keep the attention of a 7-year-old boy and a 5-year-old boy, and we were soon badgering Grandpa repeatedly as to what was next. (但对生火的好奇不足以吸引住一个七岁男孩和一个五岁男孩的注意力,我们很快就不断地追问爷爷接下来要做什么)”可知,小孩们对生火有好奇心。故选A。
根据文章倒数第二段“And right then, something terrible happened. The power came back on. (就在那时,发生了一件糟糕的事情——电来了)”和最后一段中“But for my brother and me, it was the end of a grand adventure. We stood there, speechless. Grandpa looked at us, smiled, and then slowly, he walked across the room and turned the light off. (但对于我和哥哥来说,这意味着一次伟大冒险的结束。我们站在那里,说不出话来。爷爷看着我们,笑了,然后慢慢走过房间,关掉了灯)”可知,恢复供电打断了男孩们的游戏,男孩们非常失望,于是祖父慢慢地走到房间的另一侧去关了灯。由此可以推断出,祖父理解孩子们想继续玩的想法,因此关掉灯给他们保持露营的氛围。故选D。
【46题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Granddad Charlie gathered up his winter coat, scarf, and gloves, and disappeared into the snow. (查理爷爷收拾好冬衣、围巾和手套,消失在雪地里)”和倒数第四段中“For the next hour or so, Grandpa taught us on the fine art of playing checkers. (在接下来的一个多小时里,爷爷教我们下跳棋的艺术)”以及文章最后一段中“We stood there, speechless. Grandpa looked at us, smiled, and then slowly, he walked across the room and turned the light off. (我们站在那里,说不出话来。爷爷看着我们,笑了笑,然后慢慢地穿过房间,把灯关掉了)”可知,为了不让孩子们无聊,祖父在暴风雪的日子陪着孩子们一起在室内生火、露营、做游戏。可以推断出,祖父是个体贴又善解人意的人。故选B。
【47题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“It was January in Kansas. The snowstorm hit, cutting off our power. So, though it was around noon, we were put into darkness. No television, no heat, no light. No nothing. This was back in the days when people had only radios to listen to. (那是在堪萨斯州的一月份。暴风雪来了,切断了我们的电源。所以,虽然是在中午左右,我们却陷入了黑暗之中。没有电视,没有暖气,没有光。什么都没有。那是在人们只能听收音机的时候)”和第四段““Let’s go camping.” Grandpa answered. (“我们去露营吧。”爷爷回答道)”可知,文章主要讲述在暴风雪且又停电的日子,祖父在房子里生起火来和两个男孩一起露营,做游戏唱歌的故事。所以这是一个非比寻常又难忘的露营。C选项“An Unforgettable Camping (一次难忘的露营)”符合题意。故选C。

48. What do we know about Yuan Longping according to the text?
A. He began to study hybrid rice in 1973.
B. He received the highest honor in China at 90.
C. He ever taught math in the city after graduation.
D. He ever hoped Chinese would be free from hunger.
49. How does the author mainly show the achievements of Yuan Longping in hybrid rice?
A. By listing figures. B. By quoting reports.
C. By imagining results. D. By explaining reasons.
50. Which of the following best describes Yuan Longping according to the text?
A. Patient and honest. B. Energetic and doubtful.

How is it going? Since I entered high school, I’ve found that leaning English is more difficult. Stressed and worried, I am writing to seek for your help.
As the reading materials have expanded, I am constantly struggling, having trouble understanding long and complex passages quickly. What makes the things worse is that I often get confused by new vocabulary and different sentence structures. Hard as I try, I still find it hard to improve, which even makes me sleepless.
Therefore, what should I do to improve my English study? I would be grateful if you could give me some advice. Looking forward to your earliest reply.
