Joel Sartore is a writer, teacher, and photographer. His words and beautiful images show his love of photography and of the natural world.
Question1: How did you become a National Geographic photographer?
My first job was for a newspaper. After a few years there, I met a National Geographic photographer. He liked my photos and said I should send some to the magazine. So I did. That led to a one-day job. And that led to a nine-day job, and so on.
Question 2: ____________________________________________________
To get into National Geographic, you have to give them something they don’t have. It’s not enough just to be a great photographer. You also have to be a scientist, for example, or be able to dive under sea ice, or spend maybe several days in a tree.
Question 3: Is it hard to get a job as a photographer today?
It’s now harder to work for magazines. Technology makes it easy to take good pictures, which means there are more photos and photographers. Also, the Web is filled with photos from all around the world that are free, or cost very little. These photos are often good enough to be put in books and magazines. What the magazines need to do these days is to pay for these photos.
Question 4: I want to be a photographer. Do you have any advice for me?

Follow the countryside code
Autumn is a lovely time for getting in the countryside to appreciate all the beautiful colours on the trees. However, did you know that there are guidelines for enjoying the great outdoors? Here are the main things that you need to know.
Care for each other
Be friendly to people who live and work in the countryside, as well as fellow visitors. That means sharing spaces and not making too much noise. Cyclists have to give way to walkers. However, if you’re not cycling or riding, you should watch out for slower walkers.
Keep to path
While much of the countryside is available to the public, many areas are also private. Follow signs and stay on planned paths to avoid damaging crops, disturbing animals, or getting lost. Use gates and paths. Leave gates as you found them or follow instructions on signs to prevent animals from escaping or being unable to reach food.
Leave nothing behind
If you have a picnic, make sure you clear up afterwards and take all your litter home. Rubbish can be harmful to wildlife. If you have a dog, bag any dog poo and bin it if you can, or take it home. Never light fires and only have barbecues if there are signs.
___4__
· Be careful not to step on plants.
· Leave rocks and stones where they are.
· Keep a respectful distance from wild birds and animals.
· Keep your dogs under control, on a lead or within your sight.
Before you hit the road, you should
· design your route by using maps or apps.
· check the weather conditions and make sure you are dressed correctly.

Today’s Motion
Students Should Not Be Graded on Their Handwriting
58% Say Yes
I am for the motion. “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” It is a suitable saying for this statement. A kid may not have good handwriting, but he or she could still be very very smart. For example, many great scientists’ handwriting is horrible, but they have risen to the top of their fields. Plus, even some doctors have bad handwriting, but we don’t care so much about it.

Remember the future. In the future, many jobs won’t be available because of the rise of robots and technology. In the past, you would write a letter and send it. That was like 50 years ago. Now, we have emails. Everything will be automated(自动化) soon. So is there even a point to having a debate on handwriting? NO, it really won’t matter at all!

42% Say No
Handwriting should decide students’ grades. This is because if your handwriting is bad, the teacher may not understand what you have written even though your answer is correct. Therefore, I strongly disagree with this motion. It’s worth nothing that handwriting doesn’t have to be very beautiful, but it can reflect (反映) a student’s attitude towards his or her studies.

Handwriting is important. It may not play a big part in this modern world, but it’s still very important to many people. In many jobs---more than most people think---having good, clear handwriting is necessary. If early on in school you get graded on your handwriting, then you can improve on it and get a better job in the future. Also, it’s been scientifically shown that children with good handwriting are able to spell and remember things better than children with bad handwriting.

Many students today learn programming. However, some are not sure if they should choose to learn it. What’s programming education like? What do students think of it?
Types of Programming Education
There are two types of programming education: software (软件) programming and hardware (硬件) programming. Software programming is about writing orders to solve a problem, while hardware programming uses programming languages to control hardware.
Types of Programming Languages
■ Scratch
Scratch allows beginners to make games with pictures. It only needs simple math and English knowledge. Scratch can help develop your interest in programming.
■ Python
Python is very easy to get started with. Reading a good Python program feels like reading English paragraphs. Usually, students can start learning Python in the higher grades of primary school. After learning Python, you can develop games and things like a calculator.
■ C+ +
C+ + is the only programming language for NOIP (全国青少年信息学奥林匹克联赛), which can help if a student wants to go to the top universities.
What do students think of learning programming?
Helen: I studied C+ + for several years when I was in primary school. It needs high math skills. Now I have changed to learn MO (数学奥林匹克竞赛) problems. I find out that what I’ve learned in programming helps me a lot when dealing with those problems. It can also help me with math at school.
Steve: I have friends who continue learning programming, and it takes a lot of time. There is a chance and it helps with the gaokao. If you want to study IT and engineering majors in university, it’s certainly worth learning. However, I think learning without a certain intention is better. It’s fun and a way of relaxing for me now. Programming is not for everyone as far as I can see. If you find it too hard at some point, no need to push yourself.

When a new cell phone starts to be sold in stores, many people rush out to buy one.We all want the newest, latest thing. But what should we do with our old cellphones?
Mike Townsend works at Total Recall, a cell phone recycling company. “Don’t throw your old phone away. Send it to us and we’ll recycle it,” he says. “ If you throw it away, it goes with other rubbish to become landfill. In other words, it is put in a big hole in the ground --- and it becomes a big problem.”
Cell phones contain some toxic materials(有毒物质), like lead, mercury and cadmium. If your phone goes to a landfill, these toxic materials can get out and get into the water under the ground. That’s the water we want to drink or the water that goes into rivers or the ocean. Millions of cell phones are thrown away every year.
“At Total Recall, we take the old phones apart. Most of the materials in a cell phone can be recycled and used again,” explains Mike. “We sell the parts and they are used to make new products. For example, phone batteries contain nickel and cadmium. The nickel is used to make steel, and the cadmium can be used to make new batteries. The plastic cases of the phones are made into plastic fence posts.”
Mike says recycling your old phone is easy. “You can usually take it into a cell phone shop and they’ll send it to us.” So, before you throw your old cell phone away, use it one last time: search for a cell phone recycling company near you and give them a call.

He ran into the street repeating them to everyone he met.
When he came back his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. He smiled as he took them. He had wanted for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.
As he ran down the street, he saw a poor family. The father, mother and three children were shivering(颤抖) with cold.
“I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, as he happily passed by. The man shook his head and smiled sadly.
He said, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”
Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in trouble. He took out his two dollars, and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife.
How their eyes shone with happiness! They said, “We thank you a thousand times, and will remember you in our prayers(祈祷).”
When Edward came home, his father asked what books he had bought.
Edward hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up.
“I have bought no books,” he said. “I gave my money to some poor people, who seemed to be very hungry and in trouble. I think I can wait for my books till next New Year.”
His father was pleased. He said, “My dear boy, here is a whole bundle of books. I give them to you, more as a reward(回报) for your goodness of heart than as a New Year gift. Always be ready to help the poor, and those in trouble. That way every year of your life will be a happy New Year to you.”

· take water and snacks to keep you going.
