The internet and its cultural impact are most often viewed through the lens of the “tech bro”. Biographies, and memoirs about these big-tech bosses have shaped readers’ understanding of 21 the online world changes the offline one. But these books rarely mention the principal figures who have shaped the experience of being online: social-media influencers.
Influencers—the (usually female) people behind the most popular accounts on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube—have large followings, often in the hundreds of thousands or millions. People like Jackie Aina, Matilda Djerf and Molly-Mae Hague earn a living from a combination of sponsored posts, commissions 22 (make) through associate links and by creating their own brands, from fake tan to eyeshadows.
Though they shape digital culture, too often influencers 23 (dismiss) as fame-hungry celebrities, who post about the details of their lives and mindlessly promote branded products for eye-watering sums. But a new crop of books takes the influencer industry 24 (seriously) by exploring the way social media’s most popular users are reshaping the global economy and changing what the average person views online.
Taylor Lorenz, 25 technology writer for the Washington Post, is a leading voice on social-media trends and internet culture. Her book, “Extremely Online”, argues that influencers hold huge power: “Tech founders may control the source code, 26 it is users who shape the product.” Charting the history of the influencer from the 1990s to today, Ms. Lorenz argues influencers rose by making fame and luxury less “sealed off”. Like reality-TV stars, early influencers created a new, niche sort of celebrity, popular enough 27 (draw) attention but still unrecognizable to most.
Ms. Lorenz makes the case that, despite its bad rap, influencing has “given more people the chance to benefit directly from their labor than at any other time in history”, 28 (entertain) readers with stories about “mommy bloggers” turning the pain of parenthood into six-figure businesses and teens becoming multi-millionaires through short comedy skits.
Some experts estimate as much as 90% of online content could be AI-generated by 2026. 29 the number of believable posts and photos produced by AI soars, influencers will face significantly more competition for internet users’ attention. No influencer, 30 _______ _______skilled they have proved to be at using the internet to gain popularity and profits in the past, is guaranteed to retain any kind of influence in the next technological transformation.

A new report by the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that around one in a hundred deaths worldwide is due to passive smoking, which kills an estimated 600,000 people a year.
In the first study to assess the global 31 of second-hand smoke, WHO experts find that children are more 32 exposed to second-hand smoke than any other age-group, and around 165,000 of them a year die because of it.
Children’s exposure to second-hand smoke is most likely to happen at home, and the double blow of infectious diseases and tobacco seems to be a deadly 33 for children in these regions. Commenting on the findings, Heather Wipfli and Jonathan Samet from the University of Southern California, said policymakers try to 34 families to stop smoking in the home.
While deaths due to passive smoking in children were skewed (曲解) toward poor and middle-income countries, deaths in adults were 35 across countries at all income levels.
In Europe’s high-income countries, only 71 child deaths occurred, while 35,388 deaths were in adults. Yet in the countries like Africa, an estimated 43,375 deaths due to passive smoking were in children 36 with 9,514 in adults.
Only 7.4 percent of the world population currently lives in places with 37 smoke-free laws, and those laws are not always 38 enforced (施行). In places where smoke-free rules are 39 , research shows that exposure to second-hand smoke in high-risk places like bars and restaurants can be cut by 90 percent, and in general by 60 percent, the researchers said.
Studies also show such laws help to reduce the number of cigarettes smoked by smokers and lead to higher 40 rates in those trying to quit.

Charles in Charge
In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain. People had been writing novels for a century — most critics date the genre to Robinson Crusoe in 1719 — but nobody aspired to do it professionally. Many works of fiction appeared anonymously, with attributions like “By a Lady.” The steam-powered printing press was still in its infancy; the literacy rate in England was under 50%. And novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral, toxic or just plain bad. “No species of composition has been so much decried,” wrote one lady of the time, Jane Austen, in Northanger Abbey, a satirical novel that criticizes a sensitive young woman who reads too many gothic novels.
In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first literary celebrity: a career writer and publisher, famous and beloved, who had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership and whose characters were held up as moral touchstones. Today Dickens’ greatness is unchallenged. Expelling him from the pantheon (名流) of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa.
How did Dickens get to the top? It’s partly that Dickens’ writing attracted audiences from all walks of life. It’s partly that his career rode a wave of social, political and scientific progress. But it’s also that he rewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. As the 200th anniversary of his birthday approaches, it is possible — and enlightening for our own culture — to understand how he made himself a lasting one.
Dickens got into novel writing by accident. As a young man, he longed to be an actor and trained to be a reporter. In 1836 he accepted a magazine commission to write a series of comic sketches to accompany a set of illustrations of sporting life. The result, The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, was a sensation. It established Dickens as a peerless ventriloquist (腹语者), able to channel the voices of both celebrities and servants, and as a gifted writer of serials, which became the standard method of publication in an era when books were expensive but cheap periodicals thrived. Most important in terms of his legacy, The Pickwick Papers established him as a financially viable (可存活的) artist, bridging the gap between creativity and commerce. From Pickwick to his deathbed, he wrote for an audience, and he wrote for money — two forces that before his time had had little to do with art. “He invented that form of publicity, an intimacy with his mass readership” says Nicholas Dames, a Victorian scholar. “And he invented merchandising.” (Think of A Christmas Carol, which he timed for the holidays.) “All those things that we associate with publishing culture — he was essentially the first.” And Dickens knew it. He called himself the Inimitable, a nickname that stuck.

Is It Worth Buying Organic Food?
Organic food, grown without artificial chemicals, is increasingly popular nowadays. Consumers have been willing to pay up to twice as much for goods with organic labels (标签). However, if you think paying a little more for organic food gets you a more nutritious (有营养的) and safer product, you might want to save your money. A study led by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products aren’t necessarily more nutritious, and they’re no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria, either.
The latest results, published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine, suggest that buyers may be wasting their money. “We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier,” says Dr. Crystal Smith-Spangler from Stanford. “So consumers shouldn’t assume that one type of food has a lower risk or is safer.”
For their new study, Smith-Spangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories of research, including 17 studies that compared health outcomes between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analyzed the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats.
While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces. Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats, such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. However, these nutritional differences were too small, and the researchers were unwilling to make much of them until further studies confirm the trends.
Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices, but that doesn’t always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that “Whether you buy organic or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste.” Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic.
63.The new research questions whether organic food ________.
A.should replace traditional food
B.has been overpriced by farmers
C.is grown with less harmful chemicals
D.is really more nutritious and healthier
64.Smith Spangler and her colleagues found that ________.
A.organic food could reduce the risk of heart disease
B.traditional food was grown with more natural methods
C.both organic and traditional food they examined were safe
D.there was not a presence of any forms of bacteria in organic food
65.Which of the following is relatively healthier according to the passage?
A.Organic chicken and pork.
B.Organic milk and chicken.
C.Traditional chicken and pork.
D.Traditional fruit and vegetables.
66.What is the author’s attitude toward organic food?
A.Doubtful. B.Positive. C.Unconcerned. D.Approving.

A.In fact, they tended to return to the way they felt before they became rich.
B.Nowadays people look to technology as an alternative source of satisfaction.
C.Family relationships in particular seem to be the key to long-term contentment.
D.You can’t buy happiness but it looks like you can at least inherit it, some researchers said.
E.The database makes it clear that there is not a strong connection between material wealth and general contentment.
F.An important implication is that personality traits of being outgoing and reliable provide a resource that drives future happiness.
Can Happiness Be Bought?
There is a Web site called the “World Database of Happiness”. It combines and analyzes the results of hundreds of surveys from around the world that have been conducted on life satisfaction. Most of the findings are predictable, but a few are surprising.
67 It is quite common to say that money can’t buy happiness, but the old saying seems to be supported by research. Many people still stick to the belief that gaining riches will be the answer to all their problems, yet they are probably mistaken.
Studies have been carried out on people who acquired sudden wealth, such as lottery winners. In most cases, after the initial joy had worn off, people were not left with a sense of lasting happiness. 68 Previously contented people continue to be contented, while those who were miserable before sink back into misery.
If material wealth does not bring happiness, then what does? Perhaps happiness has something to do with where you live. The authorities at the World Database on Happiness have surveyed levels of happiness in different countries. Other surveys consistently point to the importance of relationships. 69 The Web site suggests that falling in love and having children are two of the situations that bring the greatest happiness.
70 People increasingly spend more time alone watching TV or surfing the Internet rather than spending time with family. Can technology truly make people happy? It is too difficult to tell, but one thing is sure: If the Web site’s research is accurate, time spent with your family is a better investment than time spent making money.
IV. Summary Writing (10分)

We Need to Take Meditation More Seriously as Medicine
A new review study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine, suggests that the ancient Eastern practice of mindful meditation can offer real help for patients with depression, anxiety, and pain.
Dr. Madhav Goyal is the lead author of the recent JAMA study. He reviewed 47 clinical trials involving more than 3500 participants with mild anxiety or depression, and found that those who practiced mindful meditation saw a 5-10%improvement in anxiety symptoms and a 10-20% reduction in depressive symptoms.
What’s most striking about the JAMA findings is that people weren’t meditating for very long. Many in the reviewed studies meditated for as little as 2. 5 hours per week for two months. As Dr. Goyal points out, because meditation is a skill that’s learned over time, it’s unlikely that the respondents reached a high level in a short time. So according to him, it’s reasonable to think that people would experience even greater benefits with more rigorous training and practice.
Unfortunately though, it’s precisely those realities of meditation — that it is a state you can teach yourself to achieve and improve with discipline — that might weaken its validity (有效性) with physicians and patients. For example, professor Mark K. Blum, a Buddhist Studies expert at the University of California, Berkeley, believes some medical professionals may doubt the value of meditation because our culture has shifted so heavily in favor of quantitative measurement. “Medical doctors are practicing a form of science, and therefore expect to see scientific measurement,” Blum explains. “But how do you measure meditation?”
In Dr. Goyal’s view, critics of meditation have a misunderstanding of what science is. It has nothing to do with molecules or drugs, he says. Rather, medical science is a “systematic exploration of what is not known”, whatever that may be — and areas like meditation desperately need more exploration, and the funding to do it.

故填how。
故填made。
故填are dismissed。
故填more seriously。

根据前文“Tech founders may control the source code”以及后文“it is users who shape the product.” 故填but。
此处是固定搭配:enough to do sth. 故填to draw。
故填As。
故填no matter how。

56.Which of the following statements is true of British novels in the 18th century?
A.They were mostly written by female amateur writers.
B.About only half of the Britons had ever read novels.
C.They were unpopular partly for technological reasons.

57.Dickens is compared with the “Mona Lisa” in the text to stress ______.
A.the impressive characters he created
B.his great importance in British literature
C.his success in gaining a wide readership
D.the readers’ love and admiration for him
58.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To praise Charles Dicken’s literary contributions to British literature.
B.To introduce Charles Dickens’ life experience and his achievements.
C.To analyze the growth of novel writing in the UK in the 18th century.
D.To explore Charles Dickens’ path to becoming a great writer in history.
59.In the author’s opinion, Dickens’ uniqueness can be best explained by the fact that ______.
A.his works could appeal to readers of different social classes
B.He took advantage of the social, political and scientific advances
C.He made writing both profitable and touching to the readers
D.He explored both British culture and himself in his writing
根据文章第一段内容“The steam-powered printing press was still in its infancy; the literacy rate in England was under 50%. (蒸汽印刷机还处于起步阶段;英国的识字率低于50%)”可推知,英国小说不流行的部分原因是蒸汽印刷机技术落后。故选C项。
57.推理判断题。根据文章第二段内容“Today Dickens’ greatness is unchallenged. Expelling him from the pantheon (名流) of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa. (今天,狄更斯的伟大是无可置疑的。把他赶出英国文学殿堂,就像卢浮宫卖掉《蒙娜丽莎》一样)”可推知,把狄更斯与《蒙娜丽莎》进行对比较是为了强调他在英国文学中的重要地位。故选B项。
58.推理判断题。通读全文并结合文章第三段的问题“How did Dickens get to the top?(狄更斯是如何登上顶峰的?)”
作者在文章末尾段内容“And Dickens knew it. He called himself the Inimitable, a nickname that stuck.(狄更斯知道这一点。他称自己为独一无二的人,这个绰号一直沿用至今。)”点明了狄更斯的独特之处,即“it”,结合语境可知,“it”应是指代该段前文内容“From Pickwick to his deathbed, he wrote for an audience, and he wrote for money—two forces that before his time had had little to do with art.(从匹克威克到他的临终,他为读者写作,也为钱写作 —— 在他的时代之前,这两股力量与艺术几乎毫无关系。)”

由第二段““We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier,” says Dr. Crystal Smith-Spangler from Stanford.(“我们没有发现强有力的证据表明有机食品更有营养或更健康,”斯坦福大学的Crystal Smith-Spangler说。)”
由第四段“Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards.(有机食品和传统食品的化学物质含量都没有高到超出食品安全标准的程度。)”
根据倒数第二段“The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a health y fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease.(研究人员确实发现,有机牛奶和鸡肉含有更高水平的omega-3脂肪酸,这种健康的脂肪也存在于鱼类中,可以降低患心脏病的风险。)”
由第四段“However, these nutritional differences were too small(然而,这些营养差异太小了)”以及最后一段最后一句“Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic.(新鲜食品至少和市场上宣传的有机食品一样好。)”

【答案】67.E 68.A 69.C 70.B
67.前文“There is a Web site called the “World Database of Happiness”. It combines and analyzes the results of hundreds of surveys from around the world that have been conducted on life satisfaction. Most of the findings are predictable, but a few are surprising. (有一个网站叫做“世界幸福数据库”。它结合并分析了来自世界各地的数百项关于生活满意度的调查结果。大多数研究结果都在意料之中,但也有一些出人意料)”提到“世界幸福数据库”网站包含很多关于生活满意度的调查结果,后文“It is quite common to say that money can’t buy happiness, but the old saying seems to be supported by research. (人们普遍认为金钱买不到幸福,但这句老话似乎得到了研究的支持)”指出金钱买不到幸福的想法得到了研究支持,空处应该是数据库中的结果揭示了金钱和幸福之间联系不大,因此E项“The database makes it clear that there is not a strong connection between material wealth and general contentment. (该数据库清楚地表明,物质财富和总体满足感之间并没有很强的联系)”符合语境,承接前一段的内容,引出后文,其中的The database指代前文中的World Database of Happiness。故选E。
68.前文“In most cases, after the initial joy had worn off, people were not left with a sense of lasting happiness. (在大多数情况下,最初的快乐消失后,人们并没有留下持久的幸福感)”提到突然暴富的人通常不会有持久的幸福感,后文“Previously contented people continue to be contented, while those who were miserable before sink back into misery. (以前很满足的人仍然很满足,而那些以前很痛苦的人又回到了痛苦中)”具体说明满足的人仍然满足,痛苦的人仍然痛苦,空处应该是总的说明这些人会回到之前的感觉,因此A项“In fact, they tended to return to the way they felt before they became rich. (事实上,他们往往会回到富有之前的感觉)”符合语境,承上启下。故选A。
69.前文“The authorities at the World Database on Happiness have surveyed levels of happiness in different countries. Other surveys consistently point to the importance of relationships. (世界幸福数据库的权威人士调查了不同国家的幸福水平。其他调查也一致指出了人际关系的重要性)”指出人际关系会影响幸福水平,后文“The Web site suggests that falling in love and having children are two of the situations that bring the greatest happiness. (该网站指出,恋爱和生儿育女是能带来最大幸福的两件事)”指出恋爱和生儿育女最能带来幸福感,空处应该和人际关系中的家庭关系的重要性相关,因此C项“Family relationships in particular seem to be the key to long-term contentment. (尤其家庭关系似乎是令人能长久感到满足的关键)”符合语境,承上启下。故选C。
70.后文“People increasingly spend more time alone watching TV or surfing the Internet rather than spending time with family. Can technology truly make people happy? (人们越来越多地花时间独自看电视或上网,而不是花时间与家人在一起。科技真的能让人幸福吗)”指出人们花更多时间独自看电视或上网,并提问科技是否可以带来幸福,空处应该和科技与幸福之间的关系有关,因此B项“Nowadays people look to technology as an alternative source of satisfaction. (现在人们把科技看作是另一种满足的来源)”符合语境,引出后文,其中的technology在后文有同词复现。故选B。

A new study found that meditation can help ease people’s anxiety and depression and that people can benefit more if they practice meditating for longer. Though some medical professionals still don’t believe in the effect of meditation because it can’t be measured, Dr. Goyal, the lead author of the study, thinks it is worth exploring.

A new study found that meditation can help ease people’s anxiety and depression and that people can benefit more if they practice meditating for longer.
Some medical professionals still don’t believe in the effect of meditation because it can’t be measured.
Dr. Goyal thinks areas like meditation are worth more exploration。
1】A new study found that meditation can help ease people’s anxiety and depression and that people can benefit more if they practice meditating for longer.
2】Though some medical professionals still don’t believe in the effect of meditation because it can’t be measured, Dr. Goyal, the lead author of the study, thinks it is worth exploring.
V. Translation (15分)
Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.
(bury)
The workers buried themselves / were buried in hard work in order to speed up (the progress).
In order to speed up (the progress), the workers buried themselves /were buried in hard work.
根据所给中文提示词,“为了加快进度”可用介词短语:in order to意为“为了”,“加快”可用动词短语:speed up,“进度”译为“the progress”,其中the progress可省略,译为“in order to speed up (the progress)”为介词短语作目的状语,既可以放句尾也可以放句首;“工人们埋头苦干”为主句,根据题干要求需用bury,所以“埋头苦干”可用动词短语:bury oneself in或者be buried in意为“埋头于”,结合“工人们”可知反身代词themselves;使用描述已发生的事,句子时态用一般过去时,译为“the workers buried themselves in hard work”或者“the workers were buried in hard work”。 The workers buried themselves / were buried in hard work in order to speed up (the progress).或In order to speed up (the progress), the workers buried themselves /were buried in hard work.
(Hardly)
Hardly had she approved the project when she realized that it was just a passing fancy.
Hardly had she approved the project when she realized that it was just a passing fancy.
(Such…that…)
Such a good novel is this that different readers can resonate with different characters in it.
以至于”应用such…that…,位于句首应用部分倒装;表示“这是”应用this is;表示“一本好的小说”应用a good novel;that从句中,表示“不同的读者”为different readers;表示“产生共鸣”短语为resonate with, can后跟动原形;表示“里面不同的人物”翻译为different characters in it。 Such a good novel is this that different readers can resonate with different characters in it.
(expose)
Coming from a music family, she was exposed to various instruments and concerts from a young age, no wonder she grew up to become a distinguished conductor and composer.
“耳濡目染”用短语be exposed to;“各种乐器和音乐会”翻译为 various instruments and concerts;“从小”翻译为from a young age,“难怪”用短语no wonder;“长大”用短语grow up;“成为了杰出的指挥兼作曲家”翻译为become a distinguished conductor and composer。 Coming from a music family, she was exposed to various instruments and concerts from a young age, no wonder she grew up to become a distinguished conductor and composer.

When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
On this graduation ceremony I’d like to offer my sincere congratulations to you all. Well done, everyone. I’ve got three tips to share with you, hoping to make a direction for the future life after your graduation from college.
Tip one: There are few things that get you over your own crop more than working hard. Do you want to know how to work hard? It’s not difficult. All you have to do is to listen. Listen to what’s going on around you. Learn how the project you are working on fits into the big picture. Learn how you fit in. When you truly understand how the big picture works, you start being able to expect changes and change your behavior.
Tip two: Be kind to everyone. I can’t stress this enough, but it remains true. Kindness will pay back invaluable rewards. Don’t you believe me? I’m sure that at some point you’ll have the opportunity to work for someone who used to be your assistant, or hire someone who used to be your boss.
Tip three: Stay interested. Is there anything you can’t stop thinking about? Keep doing it. Interest is the better part of success. You will be great at the things that you are willing to do.
Remember that you have time to figure out what you want to do. You have time to try again. Just have courage to do it so long as you’re willing to work hard.
Questions:
11. Whom is the speech aimed at? (B)
12. Why does the speaker give the speech? (C)
13. Which of the following is NOT a tip the speaker share? (C)
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot … you can travel fast or slow. The movement of your feet gets you where you need to go. But it also gets you so much more! Walking is a basic, simple exercise that’s suitable for almost everyone.
Walking helps you in many ways. First it makes you heart stronger. Studies show regular walking reduces your chance of heart disease. Walking quickly for 30 minutes a day also helps control high blood pressure. It can reduce your chance of developing some cancers, too.
Want to lose weight? You need to burn 600 more calories each day than you eat. Walking is the easiest way. As people age, their brains don’t work as well. One in 14 people over 65 suffers from memory loss. Older people who walk six miles or more per week keep their brains in better shape.
Walking helps your mental health, too. Putting one foot in front of the other isn’t difficult. You don’t have to think about it, so you can concentrate on other things.
You can make walking part of your day. Instead of parking near your house, park a distance away and walk. Instead of taking the elevator, walk. Make walking a habit, and see how it makes you feel.
Questions:
14. What’s the topic of the passage? (A)
15. Why is walking good for people’s mental health? (D)
16. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about walking in the passage? (D)
Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.
W: Hi, Bryan. How are you doing? You look tired.
M: Oh, I’m a little burned out. I’ve been surfing the Net for the last few hours.
W: Were you doing schoolwork, or was it just for pleasure.
M: Well, I wanted to get some information on South America for a project I have, but I found a really interesting chat site with people from there and started chatting.
W: Well, did you get the information you needed?
M: Yes, but then we spent lots of time chatting about other interests.
W: I see. The Internet is a wonderful place. There is so much information available. Sometimes I find myself looking for one piece of information, but by the time I have finished, I have lot of more than I started off looking for.
M: I know. One thing I really don’t like about it, though, it takes so much longer to find things, because many sites are useless.
W: Yes, there is that, and also, I often find the same site over and over again in a search. That definitely wastes lots of my time.
M: And of course, there are sites that offer little to no relative information on the topic you are searching for. In my search today, I found quite a few sites that were nothing more than old event calendars.
W: Well, I’m sure they were useful to someone at some time, but they should be removed when they’re no longer of use to anyone.
M: I agree. With all the time I spend on it, I still find it to be the best source of information available. And speaking of information, I really should read though what I got on the Internet and start working on my subjects.
W: Okay. Good luck. It’s funny we had this chat, as I was just on my way home to surf the Net myself.
M: Well, it was nice talking to you, and maybe I’ll meet you in a chat room later tonight.
Questions:
17. Why does the man look tired? (C)
18. Why did the man surf the Internet? (D)
19. What’s the woman’s opinion about surfing the Internet? (C)
20. What does the man NOT like about the Internet? (B)
