The morning after an evening struggle to care for my three-year-old daughter, I couldn’t wait to set her to school. I, as a mother, was tired from the anger and her inability to communicate because of her slowed language development.
As I accompanied her into the car I felt desperate. Nothing was right with our world. She’d been born around the same time when the nation was witnessing the birth of another Great Recession. My job and my house had been victims(牺牲品). Then this happened. My child’s language delay(语言发育迟缓)was identified, but doctors struggled to properly help her. I felt like we both needed to be rescued.
I returned that afternoon as disenchanted with my little girl as when I left. Walking slowly toward the school’s playground gate, I found her preschool teacher racing to greet me. “You should have seen her today!” His breathy words were supported by excitement. I didn’t interrupt. “See that climber.” He pointed to a wooden piece of playground equipment that looked like a rock wall. I nodded. “Well, every day since she started school, she’s tried and failed to make it to the top.” He took a breath. “And today she did it!”
He expressed his joy just as he’d witnessed her conquering Mount Everest! “She cheered and celebrated! I wish I’d recorded it!” His words comforted me. My daughter had conquered her mountain.
As she ran toward me. I recognized something I hadn’t before. I saw her perseverance(毅力). I saw her strength. I saw a Hero.

A medical team at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore performed an operation that successfully transplanted(移植)a pig heart into a human patient. It’s the first such operation of its kind.
The team reported that the 57-year-old patient, David Bennett, was recovering well three days after receiving the pig heart. Bennett’s doctors said he was breathing on his own while still connected to a heart-lung machine to help his new heart.
Doctors say the next few weeks will be a decisive period to see how Bennett does with the new organ and whether his body begins to reject it. But the operation marks a new step in years of research to find ways to use animal organs for life-saving transplants for humans.
Bennett’s son said his father’s heart was failing and he hadn’t been able to get approved for a human heart transplant. So, he agreed to the experimental operation even though he knew there was no guarantee that it would work.
Past attempts at pig-to-human transplants have failed because of genetic (基因的)differences that caused organ rejection. To reduce such risk, scientists removed several genes from the donor pig that are linked with organ rejection. They also removed another gene from the animal in an effort to prevent too much growth of pig heart tissue.
On the morning of the operation, the transplant team removed the pig heart and placed it into a special device to keep it running until the operation. The transplant was permitted after the university received emergency approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.
Dr. Bartley Griffith led the operation. He called it a breakthrough. He said, “At present there are about 110, 000 Americans waiting for an organ transplant. More than 6, 000 patients die each year before getting one. If this works, there will be an endless supply of these organs for patients who are suffering.”
8. How was David Bennett three days after the operation?
A He was still unconscious.
B. He had great difficulty breathing.
C. His new heart couldn’t function well alone.
D. His recovery was slower than expected.
9. Why did Bennett accept the experimental operation?
A. Because he had no other choice.
B. Because he was ensured of its safety.
C. Because he had no money for a human heart transplant.
D. Because he thought it was beneficial to technology progress.
10 What’s the purpose of removing several genes from the donor pig?
A. To reduce the difficulty of the heart transplant.
B. To make the pig heart fit in better with Bennett.
C. To improve the health condition of the pig heart.
D. To enable the pig heart to keep working after being removed.
11. The figures listed in the last paragraph are mainly to show________.
A. the deadliness of organ diseases in the US
B the maturity of organ transplants in the US
C. the seriousness of organ shortage in the US
D. the necessity of organ transplants in the US

Trying to imagine fat, white sheep jumping one by one over a fence, is a well-known treatment for sleeplessness. I’ve often wondered just who came up with such a silly suggestion. If the idea is to bore you to sleep, why not count backward? And who decided on sheep? Why not rabbits, horses, frogs or kangaroos? And does it really help you fall asleep? Search online, and you’ll soon find stories about a study on battling insomnia that put the concept to the test.
“In reality, that wasn’t the point of the research,” said senior author Allison Harvey, who conducted the research. Their study wasn’t about counting sheep; it was just about using imagery to fight sleeplessness. In her research 50 people were divided into three groups. The first had no instructions on how to fall asleep, while members of the second were told to distract (分心) themselves from thoughts, worries and concerns in any way they wanted. The third group was instructed to perform an interesting and engaging imagery task, such as creating or remembering a waterfall, a holiday or a summer afternoon in the sun.
Those who used imagery reported falling asleep much faster than either of the other two groups, and they rated their thoughts, worries and concerns to be less uncomfortable and painful than people in the distraction or no instruction group.
As it happened, two of the study participants in the distraction group did count sheep as a way to fall asleep “and somehow people accepted that, I guess because they thought it was fun,” Harvey said.
While she didn’t actually study counting sheep as a way of overcoming sleeplessness and isn’t aware of any other studies to do so, Harvey does have an opinion based on her years as a sleep specialist.
“Something as ordinary as counting sheep usually does not do the trick,” she said. “As everyone is different and not one option is going to help every single time, we have worked out a menu of options with people.”
12. What does the underlined word “insomnia” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Sleeplessness. B. Illness. C. Distraction. D. Laziness.
13. What can be learned about Allison Harvey’s research?
A. Each group consisted of 50 participants.
B. The distraction group reported the most benefits.
C. Its initial aim was to test the effectiveness of imagery.
D. Every participant was given some instructions.
14. What does Allison Harvey think of counting sheep for sleep?
A. Creative. B. Questionable. C. Practical. D. Traditional.
15. What will the text continue to talk about probably?
A. Alternative methods for falling asleep.
B. Various strategies to improve people’s health.
C. Historical origins of counting sheep for sleep.
D. Scientific theories behind counting sheep for sleep.

When Dr. Henderson was assigning (指定) project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn’t assign me to work with the fiercely competitive and extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运) would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren’t there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn’t mean or abusive. He just gave me the impression that he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say, I didn’t look forward to an entire team of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it and didn’t say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students.
When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades—the exact opposite of me. I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what.
After long discussions, we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers. I wasn’t sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.
Para.1 We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans.

The morning after an evening struggle to care for my three-year-old daughter, I couldn’t wait to set her to school. I, as a mother, was tired from the anger and her inability to communicate because of her slowed language development.
As I accompanied her into the car, I felt desperate.

A. He was still unconscious.
10. What’s the purpose of removing several genes from the donor pig?
A. To reduce the difficulty of the heart transplant.
B. To make the pig heart fit in better with Bennett.
C. To improve the health condition of the pig heart.
D. To enable the pig heart to keep working after being removed.
11. The figures listed in the last paragraph are mainly to show________.
A. the deadliness of organ diseases in the US
B. the maturity of organ transplants in the US
C. the seriousness of organ shortage in the US
D. the necessity of organ transplants in the US

根据上文“You may find that you have two friends that you really want to introduce to each other. (你可能会发现你有两个朋友,你真的很想把他们介绍给对方)”可知,上文提到想要介绍两个朋友互相认识,这里应该说明为什么想要介绍他们认识的原因,选项F“They may have a lot in common or be in a similar place in life (他们可能有很多共同点,或者生活在相似的地方)”能承接上文,符合题意。故选F。
根据上文“If you are at a party or some social gathering, bring your two friends together so that they can physically meet each other. (如果你在一个聚会或社交聚会上,把你的两个朋友带到一起,这样他们就可以面对面了)”可知,本空应介绍把两个朋友带到一起的方法,由下文“or have one friend come with you while you look for the other one (或者让一个朋友和你一起去找另一个)”可知,这句话中的or表明此处存在选择关系,由此可以推断出,该空白处应该说的是另一种选择,选项C“You can have one friend stay put while you track down the other one (让一个朋友待在原地,而你去找另一个朋友)”能承上启下,符合题意。故选C。
根据上文“Once you have brought your friends together, introduce them to each other. You can choose to do the introduction and say their names, or let them do the introduction. 19题详解】
根据下文“Meeting new people can be awkward, so you should stay and keep the conversation from fizzling out (认识新朋友可能会很尴尬,所以你应该留下来,让对话不要中断)”可知,这句话提到了认识新朋友时可能存在的尴尬情况,并给出了一个建议,该空白处应该是谈论做完初步的介绍后要留下来,让对话不要中断,由此可以推断出,而选项G“Once you do the initial introduction, stick around to keep the conversation going (一旦你做了初步的介绍,就待在那里,让对话继续下去)”能引出下文,符合语境,其中“stick around to keep the conversation going”与下文中的“stay and keep the conversation from fizzling out”相对应。故选G。
根据下文“If your friends do not hit it off, you need to move on. You cannot take it personally. It is not your fault that a friendship did not blossom. Sometimes, people, who in theory should get along, simply do not like each other. Do not push it if they do not become friends. No one likes being forced into a relationship. (如果你的朋友们合不来,你需要离开。你不能往心里去。友谊没有开花结果不是你的错。有时候,理论上应该和睦相处的人,就是不喜欢对方。如果他们没有成为朋友,不要强迫他们。没有人喜欢被迫进入一段关系)”可知,最后一段讨论的是如果介绍的朋友之间没有产生友谊应该如何处理,这里提出不应该强求,如果他们不喜欢对方,就应该放手。选项A“Let it go if they do not like each other (如果他们不喜欢对方,就放手吧)”能概括本段主旨,符合题意。故选A。

故填has been believed。
故填its。
故填which。
有关”,需用介词to,构成固定短语“be close to”。故填to。
本题考查“not only…but also…” 故填but。

Dear Léo,
How are you doing? I’ve been back in Chongqing for 3 weeks. I’m writing to express my sincere thanks to you for your kind hospitality and help during my stay in Paris.
During the visit, the most unforgettable experience was the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. I felt very delighted to be invited by you to watch the diving competitions. All the athletes competed fiercely for the medals. Their fantastic skills and perseverance left a deep impression on me. This journey not only allowed me to enjoy the thrilling Olympics but also broadened my understanding of different cultures. It was truly a memorable and enriching adventure.
Again, I’d like to convey my warm thanks. It would be a great honor for me to invite you to Chonqing next year so that you can experience Chinese culture.

Para.1
We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans. Companion as I was in the project, I still had no sense of participating in the project. My teammate kept his brain occupied in developing the hypothesis, setting up an experiment to test it, and running the tests alone, leaving me just standing beside him as if I were a fool. “What a dull project it is!” I murmured to myself. However, something changed gradually, as I became aware what the tactile-kinesthetic perception of space meant. Thanks to the intense, fiercely competitive, singularly serious fellow, the whole procedure went smoothly, close to the final stage.
Para. 2
Then one day I got word that he was admitted to the hospital for a serious disease. Without any delay, I packed up my school bag, took all the experiment statistics and rushed to the hospital. Seeing the pale fellow wearing pure white clothes instead of the annoying dark clothes, I felt a sense of sympathy and mercy welling up in my heart. With his guidance, I finished the statistical analysis and presented the findings. It turned out to be such an amazing and persuasive study that my teammate and I did win the best grade. Now, we have been most reliable cooperative partners ever since!
