Ages 8 to 10. Woolly Monkeys spend most of their time high up in 150-foot-tall trees. That makes them difficult animals to count and to study. But cameras have provided valuable information and taken, as this book shows, amazing pictures. Experts now believe that Peru's lowland monkeys and the waste they produce are necessary to the survival of the rain forest. Camp Panda: Helping Cubs Return to the Wild By Catherine Thimmesh. Ages 10 to 12. The giant panda is much-beloved in China, but in the past 40 years, at least half of its habitat has been destroyed. Camp Panda tells about efforts to reintroduce the giant pandas into the wild so that they might have a future. As part of the efforts, people wear panda costumes that smell like pandas while weighing and measuring the young pandas. They aren't supposed to get used to seeing and being around people, because people could pose a threat to them in the wild. Beyond Words: What Elephants and Whales Think and Feel By Carl Safina. Ages 10 and older. Carl Safina studied elephants in an African national park and killer whales off the coast of Washington state. He learned about their strong family bonds, the surprising ways they communicate and how they play and hang out with one another. This book makes a strong case for protecting the ability of these animals to live freely. Back from the Brink: Saving Animals from Extinction By Nancy F. Castaldo. Ages 10 and older. This book focuses on seven groups of animals — including whooping cranes, California condors and American alligators — that were brought back to healthy numbers by a lot of efforts. As she celebrates these successes, Nancy F. Castaldo also makes clear that dangers, such as the effects of climate change, still cloud the future of these creatures. 1. Which is the most suitable book for readers below 10? A. The Woolly Monkey Mysteries: The Quest to Save a Rain Forest Species. B. Beyond Words: What Elephants and Whales Think and Feel. C. Back from the Brink: Saving Animals from Extinction. D. Camp Panda: Helping Cubs Return to the Wild. 2. Why do people wear panda costumes? A. To attract visitors. B. To make pandas feel safe. C. To take photos of pandas in the wild. D. To celebrate the increasing numbers of pandas. 3. What do these four books focus on? A. Animal protection. B. Climate change. C. Animal rights. D. Rain forests. A 2. B 3. 根据第一段中“The Woolly Monkey Mysteries: The Quest to Save a Rain Forest Species By Sandra Markle. Ages 8 to 10.”(《长毛猴之谜: 拯救雨林物种的探索》作者Sandra Markle。8至10岁。)可知,《羊毛猴之谜: 拯救雨林物种的探索》这本书适合10岁以下孩子阅读。故选A项。 根据第二段中“As part of the efforts, people wear panda costumes that smell like pandas while weighing and measuring the young pandas. They aren't supposed to get used to seeing and being around people, because people could pose a threat to them in the wild.”(作为努力的一部分,人们在给小熊猫称重和测量时,会穿上熊猫的服装,闻起来像熊猫。 根据第一本书介绍中“Experts now believe that Peru's lowland monkeys and the waste they produce are necessary to the survival of the rain forest.”( 专家们现在认为,秘鲁的低地猴子和它们产生的废物对于雨林的生存是必要的。)、第二本书介绍中“The giant panda is much-beloved in China, but in the past 40 years, at least half of its habitat has been destroyed. Camp Panda tells about efforts to reintroduce the giant pandas into the wild so that they might have a future.”(大熊猫深受中国人喜爱,但在过去的40年里,至少有一半的栖息地遭到破坏。 、第三本书介绍中“This book makes a strong case for protecting the ability of these animals to live freely.”( 这本书为保护这些动物自由生活的能力提供了有力的理由。)以及第四本书的书名简介“Back from the Brink: Saving Animals from Extinction”(濒临灭绝的动物: 拯救濒危动物)可知,这四本书的重点是保护动物。故选A项。 B A couple had a son eleven years after they married. They were a loving couple and the boy was the apple of their eye. When the boy was around four years old, one day the father was very tired after work so he asked his wife to pick up their son. The mother, who was very busy in the kitchen, totally forgot about it. Later the boy lost his way on the street. When the son was found missing, the mother hurried to look for him, but she didn’t find him. The mother felt very sad and didn’t know how to face her husband. When the father went to the police station after hearing that the son was missing, he looked at his wife and said just four words. What do you think the four words were? The husband just said "I love you, darling." The son was missing. If he had picked him up earlier, this would not have happened. There is no point in blaming (责备) anyone. His wife had also lost her only child. What his wife needed at that moment was comfort and understanding from her husband. That is what the husband gave his wife. Several weeks later, with the help of the police, the couple finally found their lost son. The family’s relationship became stronger over that time. Sometimes we spend lots of time asking who is to blame. We miss many chances to give each other support and let each other feel the warmth of human relationships. Get rid of all your unwillingness to forgive, selfishness, and fears and you will find the world is much more wonderful. 4. The underlined part means a person who __________. A. always has a sweet smile B. is as pretty as an apple C. is loved more than anyone else D. looks like an apple 5. The father didn’t pick the boy up because he________. A. was very lazy B. thought the mother had done that C. forgot to do so D. was too tired to do so 6. What can we learn from the passage? A. Be careful in everything you do. B. Love is the most important. C. Learn to forgive others D. Everyone can make mistakes. 7. What do you think of the husband? A. Warm-hearted. B. Careful. C. Hard-working D. Broad-minded. C 5. D 6. C 7. 根据第一段1, 2行“A couple had a son eleven years after they married. They were a loving couple and the boy was the apple of their eye.(一对夫妇在结婚11年后有了一个儿子。他们是一对有爱心的夫妻。男孩是他们的掌上明珠)”可知他们结婚11年才有孩子,那么肯定非常宠爱他。该词应该是指C项的意思。故C正确。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第一段2,3行“one day the father was very tired after work so he asked his wife to pick up their son.” 根据文章最后一段“Sometimes we spend lots of time asking who is to blame. We miss many chances to give each other support and let each other feel the warmth of human relationships. Get rid of all your unwillingness to forgive, selfishness, and fears and you will find the world is much more wonderful. C Octopuses (章鱼) in the wild have often been observed changing their skin color to catch their food or avoid being caught. Now, for the first time, a researcher has shot an attractive video of octopus called Heidi rapidly changing into a quantity of colors while dreaming. The video, part of Octopus: Making Contact, a documentary first shown on PBS on October 2, 2019. was shot by a fish lover David Scheel, who has raised Heidi in a fish tank since she was young. The professor at Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage believes that the octopus — whose skin went from pale gray to ghostly white to deep dark violet, before changing into a greenish-brown camouflage (伪装) pattern — was dreaming of catching her next meal. “She’s asleep; she sees a crab (螃蟹), and her color starts to change a little bit,” Scheel says in the video. “Then she turns all dark. Octopuses will do that when they leave the bottom.” He adds. “This is a camouflage as she’s just caught a crab, and now she’s going to sit there and eat it, and she doesn’t want anyone to notice her. If she’s dreaming, that’s the dream.” Scheel’s theory about Heidi’s pleasant dream originates from the fact that animals with the ability to camouflage have never been observed changing colors so abruptly while sleeping. The hour-long documentary, which tracks Scheel’s developing relationship with the octopus, also shows Heidi’s other skills. She enjoys playing with small toys, watching television — particularly The Big Bang Theory — and solving puzzles. The talented octopus can also escape from small spaces, use tools, and even press a button on a remote control. Like any smart family pet, Heidi recognizes Scheel and his teenage daughter Laura and excitedly rushes to her tank’s side in greeting every time either comes close. 8. What is the octopus doing in the video? A. Hunting. B. Hiding. C. Dining. D. Sleeping. 9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The relationship between Scheel and Heidi. B. Scheel’s guessing about the dream of Heidi. C. The octopus’ daily activities in a fish tank. D. The research results about octopuses’ dream. 10. What do we know about the documentary? A. It is about an octopus and her host Scheel. B. It is filmed and produced by Laura. C. It records an octopus’ dream content. D. It shows octopuses change colors when hunting. 11. Which of the following could be the best title for the text? A. An Octopus Changes Colors While Sleeping B. An Important Discovery Shown on PBS C. A Documentary About an Octopus’ Life Habit D. A Fish Lover Raises an Amazing Octopus 【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第一段中“Now, for the first time, a researcher has shot an attractive video of octopus called Heidi rapidly changing into a quantity of colors while dreaming.(现在,一位研究人员第一次拍摄了一段迷人的视频:一只名叫海蒂的章鱼在做梦时迅速变换成各种颜色)”可知,视频中的章鱼在睡觉。 根据第三段“‘She’s asleep; she sees a crab (螃蟹), and her color starts to change a little bit,’ Scheel says in the video. ‘Then she turns all dark. Octopuses will do that when they leave the bottom.’ He adds. ‘This is a camouflage as she’s just caught a crab, and now she’s going to sit there and eat it, and she doesn’t want anyone to notice her. If she’s dreaming, that’s the dream.’ Scheel’s theory about Heidi’s pleasant dream originates from the fact that animals with the ability to camouflage have never been observed changing colors so abruptly while sleeping.(“她睡着了;她看到了一只螃蟹,然后她的颜色就开始发生了一点变化。” 根据第四段中“The hour-long documentary, which tracks Scheel’s developing relationship with the octopus, also shows Heidi’s other skills.(这部长达一小时的纪录片记录了希尔和章鱼的关系发展,还展示了海蒂的其他技能)”可知,纪录片主要是关于章鱼和它的主人谢尔的故事。故选A项。 通读全文,并结合第一段中“Now, for the first time, a researcher has shot an attractive video of octopus called Heidi rapidly changing into a quantity of colors while dreaming.(现在,一位研究人员第一次拍摄了一段迷人的视频:一只名叫海蒂的章鱼在做梦时迅速变换成各种颜色)”可知,本文主要介绍了一只在做梦时迅速变换成各种颜色的章鱼,所以“An Octopus Changes Colors While Sleeping (章鱼睡觉时会变色)”是最佳标题。故选A项。 D Loss of slow-wave sleep as you age may increase your risk of developing dementia (痴呆), according to a new study. “We found that aging was associated with a decline in the amount of the deepest stages of sleep, known as slow-wave sleep. We then found that people with greater declines in slow-wave sleep over time had a higher risk of getting dementia over the next 17 years of follow-up,” said Matthew Pase, senior author of the study. Slow-wave sleep is the third and fourth stages of sleep, which is important for brain health. During this stage, the body removes unwanted or harmful materials from the brain. “For the brain, this deep sleep is thought to be the most restorative,” said Dr Richard Isaacson, who wasn’t involved in the study. The researchers wanted to know whether chronic (慢性的) reductions in slow-wave sleep over time are linked to dementia risk in humans and whether dementia-related processes in the brain may contribute to getting less of this type of sleep. They studied 346 people with an average age of 69 and completed two overnight sleep studies—one between 1995 and 1998 and the second between 1998 and 2001—during which their sleep was monitored. The researchers also investigated whether any change in the amount of slow-wave sleep that participants got was associated with developing dementia up to 17 years after they completed the sleep studies. By that time, 52 participants had been diagnosed with dementia. Each percentage decrease in slow-wave sleep per year was linked to a 27 percent increased risk of developing dementia. The rate of slow-wave sleep loss accelerated (加速) from age 60, peaked from ages 75 to 80and slowed afterwards. “This is an important study yet again showing the impact of quality of sleep on a person’s risk of cognitive decline and dementia,” Isaacson said. “It’s important to not only pay attention to the total amount of sleep a person gets each night, but also monitor sleep quality as best as possible.” 12. What can we learn from the new study? A. The older you are, the less sleep you will have. B. Slow-wave sleep has been linked to the risk of dementia. C. The rate of slow-wave sleep loss keeps going up with age. D. The amount of sleep has an impact on the risk of dementia. 13. How did researchers get what they wanted? A. By making a comparison. B. By introducing a concept. C. By referring to another study. D. By making a survey. 14. What did Dr Richard Isaacson suggest? A. Sleep quality needs more attention. B. We should have enough sleep. C. The elderly should sleep more than the young. D. The amount of sleep is more important than sleep quality. 15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear? A. Sports. B. Health. C. Education. D. Environment. B 13. D 14. A 15. 根据第一段“Loss of slow-wave sleep as you age may increase your risk of developing dementia (痴呆), according to a new study.(新研究发现,随着年龄增长,慢波睡眠时间的减少可能会增加患痴呆症的风险)”可知,慢波睡眠与患痴呆症的风险有关。 根据第四段“They studied 346 people with an average age of 69 and completed two overnight sleep studies—one between 1995 and 1998 and the second between 1998 and 2001—during which their sleep was monitored. The researchers also investigated whether any change in the amount of slow-wave sleep that participants got was associated with developing dementia up to 17 years after they completed the sleep studies.(研究人员调查了平均年龄69岁的346个人,并且分别在1995年至1998年间以及1998年至2001年间完成了两项夜间睡眠研究,在这期间对他们的睡眠进行了监测。研究人员还调查了参与者慢波睡眠时间的任何变化是否与完成睡眠研究17年后患痴呆症有关)”可知,研究人员是通过做调查的方式得到他们想要的。故选D。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段““This is an important study yet again showing the impact of quality of sleep on a person’s risk of cognitive decline and dementia,” Isaacson said. “It’s important to not only pay attention to the total amount of sleep a person gets each night, but also monitor sleep quality as best as possible.”(“这项重要研究再次表明了睡眠质量对于一个人患上认知衰退和痴呆症风险的影响。”艾萨克森表示:“我们不光要注意一个人每夜睡眠的总时长,也要尽可能监测睡眠质量。”)”可知,Richard Isaacson的建议是要多关注睡眠质量。故选A。 根据第一段“Loss of slow-wave sleep as you age may increase your risk of developing dementia(痴呆), according to a new study.(新研究发现,随着年龄增长,慢波睡眠时间的减少可能会增加患痴呆症的风险)”可知,这是与健康有关的研究,所以这篇文章很有可能出现在报纸上的“健康”板块。 ANIMAL BODY LANGUAGE Human beings are not only ones who communicate. ______16______ Here is a quick look at how some of our animal friends send messages to us and to each other. ______17______ When a dog is happy, its ears will stand up and its eyes will be wide open. When the boy was around four years old, one day the father was very tired after work so he asked his wife to pick up their son. The mother, who was very busy in the kitchen, totally forgot about it. Later the boy lost his way on the street. When the son was found missing the mother hurried to look for him, but she didn’t find him. 8. A Fish Lover Raises an Amazing Octopus D Loss of slow-wave sleep as you age may increase your risk of developing dementia (痴呆), according to a new study. A Sleep quality needs more attention. B. We should have enough sleep. C. The elderly should sleep more than the young. D. The amount of sleep is more important than sleep quality. 15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear? A. Sports. B. Health. C.
