Step1 Lead-in
Have students answer the following question.
If you want to introduce a festival, what would you like to write about it?
Possible answer
I would like to write about what my favourite festival is, when it is, how important it is, how people celebrate it and why people celebrate it in those ways.
Step 2 Presentation
1.Have students read Simon's writing plan in Part D1 on page 101 and answer the following questions.
What is Simon's favourite festival?
How do people celebrate it?
Possible answer
Simon's favourite festival is the Spring Festival. It's an important holiday in China. Most Chinese families celebrate it. People clean their homes and put up the Spring Festival couplets. Families get together and have a big dinner. They watch TV programmes, like the Spring Festival Gala. They also visit relatives and friends, and kids usually get red packets.
2.Have students read Simon's article in Part D2 on page 102 and summarize the content and structure of the article. Possible answer
Part 1: Name and time of my favourite festival
Part 2: Celebrations and cultural meanings of my favourite festival
Part 3: Feelings about my favourite festival
3.Have students find useful expressions in the article and come up with more. Then have students finish the chart below.

1.Have students think about what else they can add to the article about their favourite festivals. Possible answer
We can add more celebrations and the culture behind them.
2.Have students discuss how to introduce festival celebrations according to Simon's article. Possible answer
We can introduce festival celebrations in time order: Before the festival, people usually ... On the ... Eve, ... Then ... During the holiday, ...
3. Have students think about the meaning of most festivals.
4.Have students write an article about their favourite festivals. They can refer to Part D2 and “Useful expressions" on page 102 to guide their writing in terms of structure, content and expressions.
5. Have students check their writing after they finish and exchange drafts with their partners for review. Then have students revise their articles.
6.Have students share their articles in class, evaluate which one is the best and learn from each other.
