The underdog is:

an athlete who seems to have little chance to win
a company that never wins

I think Paul was a dedicated/determined/perseverant player because he spent hours practicing even though he was short and was underestimated by the coach at first.

He might have learnt that he should never judge a person by his physical appearance but according to his ability.
