In just eight months,my dog Toby had grown too big for our small apartment,so
Mom sent him to Grandma's farm.To comfort me,Mom got me a cat and I decided to train
this cat.
First,I named him Wilbur.Next,I decided to train him not to make our apartment
dirty. In order to train him to use the litter box my mother bought as his toilet,I followed
him everywhere, watching for some sign that he wanted to go outside, just like I'd done
with Toby.I waited and watched. But all that cat did was sleep.Pretty soon I fell asleep,
too. When I woke up,I heard some noise from the box.I looked inside and found Wilbur in
it on his own.
If a cat could do that by himself easily,I figured that teaching him a few tricks would
be a cinch.I set Wilbur down in front of me and said,"Sit",pushing his back down gently,
just like I'd done with Toby. However,he jumped away. This cat didn't know anything
about taking orders.

clean themselves..”

down to get a better listen. To my surprise,Wilbur moved to me,and jumped onto my

Last weekend I visited Rome for the first time.I spent three busy days in the Italian capital,
seeing lots of tourist attractions and walking down streets lit with Christmas decorations. There
are a lot of things I love about the city.
Rome is one of the most ancient cities in the world and is full of wonderful relics
from its distant past. These monuments include the Roman Forum and the vast
Coliseum where gladiators used to fight each other until death and hunt animals coming
from another country. The ruins of buildings and temples are fascinating and you can't quite
believe how old they are.
I studied the masterpieces of the Renaissance period at university and was very excited
to see them in real life.I walked around the museum in Vatican City and saw plenty of
famous sculptures ()The best part of the visit was, without doubt, the Sistine
Chapel ceiling, painted in the early 16th century by the great Michelangelo. It was so
breathtaking that I couldn't tear my eyes away from it.
In Rome, there is a lot of food on offer for tourists but some of it isn't of very good
quality.I made an effort to find reliable restaurants to taste the popular meals of the
region, like pasta with tomato, onion and bacon.I also love eating ice cream and hot
chocolate under the Christmas lights.
Rome has not only lots of luxury boutiques (but also plenty of shops that

Perhaps you have heard the expression "When in Rome,do as the Romans do".So
when you want to do business in France, you have to get to know French culture, make
marketing plans, and run your business by local laws.
36 The French take great pride in their language,so anyone who does not speak it
may run the risk of being disrespected by his French colleagues or business partners. Also,
another reason why learning French is important is that it is a great way to show every
possible French business partner that you care and respect their country's culture and
language.
The first thing that you should do when meeting someone new is to shake his hand
firmly and always look at the person in the eye.In social meetings with friends, kissing is
common.
Use first names only after being invited to.37 The French will sometimes
introduce themselves using their surname first, followed by their first name.
Dress well.38 Your business clothing is a reflection of your success and social
status.Always try to be tasteful and stylish.Women are advised to dress simply but
elegantly.Wearing make-up is practiced widely by businesswomen.
The French are passionate about food,so lunches are common in doing business in France,
which usually consist of an appetizer, main meal with wine, cheese, dessert and coffee, and
normally take up two hours.39
Do not begin eating until the host says "bon appetite".Pass dishes to the left, keep
wrists above the table and try to eat everything on the plate.40 This may suggest that
you find the food tasteless. If eating in a restaurant the person who invites always pays.
A.Remember to be as polite as possible.
B.This is a time for relationship building.
C.Use Monsieur or Madame before the surname.
D.Be careful with adding salt, pepper or sauces to your food.
E.Make an appointment with your business partner in advance.
F.The French draw information about people based on their appearance.

To celebrate his girlfriend's birthday,Luke Fortune drove from a small town in Central
Oregon to Portland, where he parked his car in a paid garage overnight. The next morning,
he discovered that the car's window had been broken, along with his dreams for the future:
His backpack and computer were gone.
"Everything important to me was on that computer,"said Fortune,21,who is
studying to become a paramedic(护理人员).“My classwork,every paper I'd written,and
all the programs I needed for my paramedic tests.Every letter I was working on for job
applications.I felt sick."
Two days after the theft, another young man was standing outside his apartment, also
in Portland.Masoud Almazrouei,29,was an exchange student from the United Arab
Emirates.A man came up to him, saying he had a computer for sale.Only $200.
Almazrouei, who had been in the United States for only a year, admits now that he was
naive().But he needed a computer,so he bought it,took it home, and turned it on.
Within seconds,he saw files and photographs.
"I wondered who would sell a computer with all of this on it,"he said."I realized it
could be stolen."Almazrouei found what appeared to be the owner's cellphone number and
called it.
"This guy with a thick accent told me he had my computer,"Fortune said."He told
me the story and said it was his fault.I thought it was a trick.I told him if he really had the
computer,he should take it to the police."
Soon after,a police officer called Fortune to say that a man had dropped the computer
off and had said he was sorry. He passed along the man's number.
Paragraph 1:
Fortune called and thanked Almazrouei and insisted on paying him a reward of
$200.
