Bitcoin has been all over the news lately. Apparently, the idea of money that's not tied to a
specific bank-or a specific country-is appealing to many. But it's worth remembering that the
banking system that we now all live with is just that: a modern invention.
In the past, money's makeup varied from place to place, depending on what was
considered valuable there. Today, on an island in the Pacific, a specific type of shell still

On Malaita, the largest island that's part of the Solomon Islands, shells are accepted
at most places in exchange for goods.

the red ones, one string might get enough tuna to feed a big family for a long time."
There's only one place on the island where the shells, which are polished and strung
together to form 3-foot-long ropes, are made. The strings of red, white, and black shells all
come from the Langa Langa Lagoon. Once trapped out on the islands, the locals needed a
currency to use among themselves, and so the shell currency was born.
Using shells for money was common throughout the Pacific islands as late as the early

Inside WeWork's New York City headquarters on a Thursday morning, a handful of
kids were selling carrots and peppers. The children are members of WeWork's first school.
WeGrow, where farming is part of the curriculum. They were interacting with WeGrow
employees browsing the goods. "How many carrots would you like?"One girl asked. "We
take Apple Pay,"another shouted.
Founded in 2o1o, WeWork has made a name for itself as a global network of
coworking spaces. WeGrow is WeWork's newest enterprise(事业) and its first attempt in
the education industry.
WeGrow, a school which claims to grow"conscious leaders", is inspired by the
Montessori approach to learning that gives children the freedom to explore and choose their
activities, so their nature of creativity and curiosity is preserved. But the goal is not to
create next-generation CEOs. "Leadership is a bit of an exciting word for people," said
Rebekah, WeGrow's founder and CEO. "We've seen children do such a thing forever -
running a lemonade stand every time, that's what that is."
WeGrow opened in the fall last year. Currently, 46 kids are enrolled in classes from
pre-kindergarten to fourth grade. The kids start every morning with live music, followed
by yoga. They spend time in nature and choose to take either Hebrew or Mandarin
courses. WeGrow students learn science, math, social studies and language arts. It also
has a program for kids to connect with WeWork community members with careers in areas
kids might be interested in. But the main concern is that standardized tests are not available
to measure the students' overall progress.

Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for
the circus. Finally there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
1-7
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably
under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money. Their clothes were
not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing
in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about
the clowns, elephants and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or
sisters in a low voice. One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It
promised to be a highlight of their young lives.
The father and mother were at the head of the line, standing proud as they could be.
The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say,"You are my
knight in shining armor.”He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if
to say,"You got that right". The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he
wanted. He proudly responded,"Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult
tickets so I can take my family to the circus."
The ticket lady gave the price. The man's wife let go of his hand, lowered her head
and her lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked,“How much did
you say?" The ticket lady told him the price again. The man obviously didn't have enough
money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough
money to take them to the circus? Actually we were not wealthy in one sense, so I
understood how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.
Paragraph1:
Seeing what was going on, my dad seemed to have an idea.
Paragraph 2:
Then my father and I went back home.
