With over 40 years of experience, he taps the overgrown ground with a wooden stick, warning wild animals for safety. He lives in Shixia village near the 8.6-kilometer part. Shixia villagers have a deep love for the wall. Mei remembers when he ran and played hide-and-seek with his friends on the large building as a child. However in 1979, when he returned to Shixia after working outside for years, he was shocked by the terrible situation of the old wall. “Some villagers even took stones from it to build their houses,” Mei says. To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter. In 1984, a Great Wall protection program started, with Mei’s effort encouraging many, and it was quickly picked up by villagers in Shixia. Realizing the importance of protection, more and more of them returned the stones they had taken and joined Mei on patrol. In 2006, as village head, Mei set up a volunteer protection organisation, and about 80 of 100 villagers joined as guardians. His niece, Liu Hongyan, encouraged by him, also became a guardian in 2019. “When I was a child, my uncle always told me his patrol stories and talked about the history of the Great Wall,” Liu says. “It is my duty and responsibility to protect the Great Wall.” Mei’s hard work has made a difference. From 2015 to 2023, 289 protection projects were allowed and thousands of guardians joined. Even though there is progress, the Shixiaguan part still remains closed to the public. “My biggest wish,” Mei says, “is to see the Great Wall well-protected and open for all to visit, encouraging more people to join us in protecting it.” 4 What made Mei Jingtian decide to protect the Great Wall? A. The dream of being a hero. B. The influence of his friends. C. Poor condition of the Great Wall. D. Encouragement from the villagers. 5. What do the underlined words “picked up” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Recognised. B. Finished. C. Managed. D. Developed. 6. Which of the following best describes Mei Jingtian? A. Careful and confident. B. Kind-hearted and humorous. C. Creative and curious. D. Responsible and strong-willed. 7. What does the text mainly talk about? A. A lifelong guardian of the Great Wall. B. Villagers’ deep love for the Great Wall. C. The progress in protecting the Great Wall. D. A practical Great Wall protection program. C In the first half of the twentieth century, Karl von Frisch, a scientist who studied animal behavior, changed our impression of honey bees by discovering the “waggle (摇摆) dance”, which may not be considered as a language, but a form of communication. It was one of our first understandings that bees do something like what we call “thinking”. Clint Perry, a scientist at Queen Mary University of London, has spent much time studying how bees think. He gave bees a choice between landing on a place above a black bar (横木) or a place below it. If they landed above the bar, they would find a delicious sugary drink. If they chose the place below the black bar, they found a terrible drink. He made the test harder or easier by moving the landing places farther from or closer to the black bar. But bees also had the choice of avoiding the task if they weren’t sure they would succeed. Perry found that bees avoided the test when it was difficult and gave it a try when it was easy. Perry pointed out that we can’t know for sure from tests like this whether bees are actually judging by their own knowledge or simply quitting the task because of an unhappy connection with the terrible drink. Scientists still do not know how bees manage to do so much with their tiny brains. No one is suggesting that bees are as smart as humans, at least not when it comes to things like memory and language. But learning more about how bees’ brains work could help us learn more about how our own brains deal with information. We may also have to rethink how we view the rest of the insect world. There are a lot of small creatures (生物) flying around in the garden. Who knows what those tiny minds might be able to do? 8. Why does the author mention Karl von Frisch in the first paragraph? A. To introduce a famous scientist. B. To change the impression of bees. C. To show early study of bees’ thinking. D. To stress the importance of bees’ study. 9. How did Clint Perry make the task difficult? A. By setting more choices. B. By giving challenging orders. C. By making landing places farther. D. By reducing the sweet level of the drinks. 10. What is Clint Perry’s attitude to the result of the research? A. Supportive. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Uncertain. 11. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Insects’ thinking ability will improve. B. The number of small insects will increase. C. Study on insects’ brains has a long way to go. D. Insects’ life habits will be a focus of research. D Little kids are much more likely to remember a thing that is unimaginable to them, a team reports in the journal PNAS. Feigenson, an expert at Johns Hopkins University and Aimee Stahl of The College of New Jersey did an experiment that included 335 2-and 3-year-olds. “We wanted to know how little kids think about possibilities,” Feigenson says. Their first challenge was getting the attention of kids that young, so the scientists designed a special machine filled with toys. It turns out that the chance to put a little coin in a machine and get a prize is a drive to kids. When the little kids got a toy from the machine, the scientists told them it had a made-up name: Blick. Later, they were asked to point to the Blick among many toys. When the little kids knew the transparent (透明的) machine held Blicks, they were unsurprised by their prize and usually forgot its name. This was true even when the machine had only one or two Blicks among lots of other toys. But the little kids behaved very differently when they got a Blick from a machine that appeared to have none, a seemingly impossible thing. “Often, “kids’ eyes get wide, and their mouths open, and they look at their mom in surprise that this has happened,” Feigenson says. Moreover, when little kids met this completely unexpected result, they usually remembered the Blick’s name. They are really driven to learn. The results further prove that even very young children learn better when they meet the unexpected, says Andrew Shtulman, an expert at Occidental College. “It causes a level of surprise that leads to more attention, better understanding of the things, and better continuous attention of those things later on,” he adds, “If you want children to learn something deeply and for a long time, you go against their expectations before introducing that information.” 12. What does the experiment focus on? A. Little kids’ imagination. B. Little kids’ rememberance. C. Little kids’ curiosity about learning. D. Little kids’ behaviour to possibilities. 13. What does the underlined word “this” refer to in paragraph 3? A. They had no interest in the result. B. They had no confidence in winning. C. They had difficulty in concentrating. D. They did well in telling the difference. 14. How did little kids find the machine without Blicks? A. They were amazed. B. They were annoyed. C. They were satisfied. D. They were frightened. 15. What is Andrew Shtulman’s suggestion on children’s learning? A. Offer information directly. B. Teach them as they expect. C. Provide more teaching methods. D. Surprise the kids to learn better. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 I have a terrible sense of direction, so without the guide of GPS — the Global Positioning System — not only would I be lost, but also I’d feel lost. ___16___. After only a month in school, she began to come home from time to time asking for pencils, crayons (蜡笔), paper, etc. At first I just provided whatever she needed, never questioning her. After ongoing requests for objects that should have easily lasted a mere six weeks of fourth grade, I became worried and asked her, “Gina, what are you doing with your school items?” She would always reply with an answer that satisfied me. One day, after offering the same thing only a week earlier, I became angry with her asking for more and seriously asked her once more, “Gina! what is going on with your school items?” Knowing her excuses would no longer work, she lowered her head and began to cry. I lifted her tiny chin (下巴) and looked into those big brown eyes, filled now with tears. “What?! What is wrong?” My mind was filled with all kinds of ideas. Had she been bullied by another child? Was she giving her items to him or her to keep from being hurt? I couldn’t imagine what was going on, but I knew it was something serious for her to cry. I waited for what seemed like a year for her to answer. “Mom,” she began, “there is a boy in my class; he doesn’t have any of the items he needs to do his work. The other kids make fun of him because his papers are in a mess and he only has two crayons to color with. I have been putting the new items you bought me in his desk before the others come in, so he doesn’t know it’s me. Please don’t get mad at me, Mom. I didn’t mean to tell you a lie, but I didn’t want anyone to know it was me.” 注意: 1. 续写词数应为80个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。 My heart dropped as I stood there in disbelief. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力1-5 BBCAA 6-10 ABACA 11-15 BBBCA 16-20 CBCAC 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 高一期中调研监测考试 英语试题 注意事项: 1. 1. “My biggest wish,” Mei says, “is to see the Great Wall well-protected and open for all to visit, encouraging more people to join us in protecting it.” 4. What made Mei Jingtian decide to protect the Great Wall? A. The dream of being a hero. B. The influence of his friends. C. Poor condition of the Great Wall. D. Encouragement from the villagers. 5. What do the underlined words “picked up” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Recognised. B. Finished. C. Managed. D. Developed. 6. Which of the following best describes Mei Jingtian? A. Careful and confident. B. Kind-hearted and humorous. C. Creative and curious. D. Responsible and strong-willed. 7. What does the text mainly talk about? A. A lifelong guardian of the Great Wall. B. Villagers’ deep love for the Great Wall. C. The progress in protecting the Great Wall. D. A practical Great Wall protection program. 【答案】4. C 5. A 6. D 7. To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter. (然而,1979年,当他在外面工作多年后回到石峡时,他被老城墙的可怕状况震惊了。梅说:“一些村民甚至用石头盖房子。”为了保护这一奇迹,梅自愿成为一名守护者,每天巡逻20公里,防止人们拿石头、在墙上写字或乱扔垃圾)”可知,残破的长城使梅景田决定保护长城。故选C项。 【5题详解】 词句猜测题。根据画线部分的下文“Realizing the importance of protection, more and more of them returned the stones they had taken and joined Mei on patrol. (意识到保护的重要性,越来越多的人归还了他们带走的石头,加入了梅的巡逻)”可知,当地村民意识到要保护长城,开始着手进行保护计划。由此可知,长城保护计划得到了这里的村民的认可,画线部分意思应该与Recognised“认可,承认”一致。故选A项。 根据第一段中“Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. (即使在80岁的时候,梅景田仍然在石峡关长城巡逻)”、第二段中“To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter. (为了保护这一奇迹,梅自愿成为一名守护者,每天巡逻20公里,防止人们拿石头、在墙上写字或乱扔垃圾)”和第三段中“In 2006, as village head, Mei set up a volunteer protection organisation, and about 80 of 100 villagers joined as guardians. (2006年,作为村长,梅成立了一个志愿者保护组织,100名村民中约有80人作为守护人加入)”可知,梅景田志愿做长城的守护者,每天巡逻,防止长城被破坏,成立志愿者保护组织,80岁还在坚守这一使命。这些展现了他的责任感和坚强意志。故选D项。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. (即使在80岁的时候,梅景田仍然在石峡关长城巡逻)”可知,文章围绕梅景田毕生致力于保护长城的事迹展开,他最初决定志愿成为长城守护者,后来他努力组织和鼓励他人加入保护长城的行列,即文章主要是关于长城的终身守护者。故选A项。 C In the first half of the twentieth century, Karl von Frisch, a scientist who studied animal behavior, changed our impression of honey bees by discovering the “waggle (摇摆) dance”, which may not be considered as a language, but a form of communication. It was one of our first understandings that bees do something like what we call “thinking”. Clint Perry a scientist at Queen Mary University of London, has spent much time studying how bees think. 8 Why does the author mention Karl von Frisch in the first paragraph? C 9. C 10. D 11. 根据文章第一段“In the first half of the twentieth century, Karl von Frisch, a scientist who studied animal behavior, changed our impression of honey bees by discovering the “waggle (摇摆) dance”, which may not be considered as a language, but a form of communication. It was one of our first understandings that bees do something like what we call “thinking”.(20世纪上半叶,研究动物行为的科学家卡尔·冯·弗里施(Karl von Frisch)发现了“摇摆舞”,改变了我们对蜜蜂的印象。“摇摆舞”可能不是一种语言,而是一种交流形式。这是我们最初的理解之一,蜜蜂会做一些我们称之为“思考”的事情)”可知,文章第一段提及Karl von Frisch的发现“摇摆舞”是为了展示蜜蜂是会思考的,该发现是蜜蜂行为的早期研究。故选C。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第二段“He made the test harder or easier by moving the landing places farther from or closer to the black bar.(他把着陆点移得离黑条更远或更近,从而使测试变得更困难或更容易)”可知, Clint Perry通过将着陆点移得离黑条更远来加大任务难度。 根据文章第三段“Perry pointed out that we can’t know for sure from tests like this whether bees are actually judging by their own knowledge or simply quitting the task because of an unhappy connection with the terrible drink.(Perry指出,我们不能从这样的测试中确定蜜蜂是根据自己的知识来判断,还是只是因为与可怕的饮料产生了不愉快的联系而放弃了任务)”可知,Clint Perry对于这个实验的结果不是十分确定。 根据文章最后一段“We may also have to rethink how we view the rest of the insect world. There are a lot of small creatures (生物) flying around in the garden. Who knows what those tiny minds might be able to do?(我们可能也不得不重新思考我们如何看待其他的昆虫世界。有很多小生物在花园里飞来飞去。谁知道这些小脑袋能做什么呢?)”可知,最后一段表明还有其他的昆虫的大脑也值得研究,对昆虫大脑的研究还有很长的路要走。故选C。 D Little kids are much more likely to remember a thing that is unimaginable to them, a team reports in the journal PNAS. 【答案】12. D 13. A 14. A 15. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 My heart dropped as I stood there in disbelief. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】My heart dropped as I stood there in disbelief. We organized a small fundraiser at a local community center, inviting neighbors and friends to donate food, drinks, school supplies and toys. We could never forget his expressions when we delivered the donations to the boy. He just stared at the gifts in shock but with gratitude. I was glad I was part of the kind plan. 词汇激活 行为类 ①隐藏:hide/conceal ②拥抱:hug/embrace ②组织:organize/conduct 情绪类 ①震惊:shock/astonishment ②感谢:gratitude/appreciation/thankfulness 【点睛】[高分句型1].
