Freshman year of high school is a big transition (过渡) for any student.
Luckily, you’re not the only person going through this, and plenty of others have made the transition before you too.
One of the ways in which high school is different from middle school or junior high the most is the higher expectations. You’ll find that you’re expected to keep closer track of your own schedule and responsibilities with fewer people checking up on you. At the same time, your classes are likely to become more challenging, and you might be participating in new school activities as well.
Some students find it hard to keep up with everything at first, which is totally normal. One way to prepare in advance for these higher expectations is to make sure that you have organized schedules in place before you start high school.
Another important skill for meeting these higher expectations is building a strong support network. No matter how strong a student you are, at some point you will need some help. Keeping healthy relationships with your friends and teachers is a great way to make sure that you have people who are willing to help when you need them.
Try to get to know at least some of your teachers beyond your classroom communication. Be an active learner during class and stay after class to ask questions. Take advantage of email or class messaging systems. The better your teachers know you, the better prepared they’ll be to help when you need them.
It’s important for you to keep in mind as you start high school that no one is perfect. Transitions are hard for everyone, and starting high school is a big transition. These challenges provide a great chance to recreate yourself.

On November 7, Lewis Pugh completed a one-kilometer swim in the freezing waters of King Edward Cove, off South Georgia in Antarctica. He was wearing only his swimming glasses, cap and speedos!
Pugh is an advocate for our oceans and seas, working to protect these ecosystem with their large diversity of marine life. When asked why he doesn’t wear a wetsuit, Lewis says, “I ask world leaders to do everything they can to protect our oceans. Sometimes the steps they need to take are difficult and unpopular. If I’m asking them to be courageous, I must also be. Swimming in a wetsuit would not send the right message.”
It took Pugh about 19 minutes to complete the one-kilometer swim in Antarctica where the water averaged about 1.6 degrees Celsius. He says that his body can only tolerate about 20 minutes in the freezing waters before it starts shutting down. As he swims, his body temperature steadily drops, which in turn causes his muscle control to drop, slowing him down. When he is done with his swim, his support team rushes him to a hot shower and it takes almost an hour for his body temperature to return to normal.
Doctors and Pugh caution that one must receive months of training to swim in such cold waters. Even expert swimmers who are unused to freezing water can drown within minutes because of the physical shock experienced by the body. Pugh says he trained for six months before this swim.
This is not the first time that Lewis has swum in dangerous conditions. In 2007 he swam one kilometer in the North Pole to draw attention to the melting Arctic ice due to climate change. In 2015, he swam in the Bay of Whales in Antarctica’s Ross Sea as part of his successful campaign to help set up a marine reserve there.
8. Why did Lewis Pugh swim without a wetsuit?
A. To swim faster. B. To show his bravery.
C. To build up his body. D. To win public attention.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. His body. B. The water. C. His body temperature. D. The water temperature.
10. What’s Pugh’s advice about swimming in freezing waters?
A. One should be ready to take on challenges. B. One should be expert at swimming.
C. One must be fully prepared. D. One must be used to long-distance swimming.
11. What may be the best title for the text?
A. Lewis Pugh: swimming for a cause B. How to survive a swim in cold waters
C. How to prepare for extreme swimming D. Lewis Pugh: achieving the impossible
D
Like any language, English has many variations in vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation. The differences can be regional or even exist within the same city! As a Canadian who lives in Vancouver, I have always known about these differences, but I didn’t get to experience them firsthand until I began attending an American university.
I found that there are some Canadian words that people in the US just don’t understand, such as a “tuque”, which is a warm hat, and “runners”, which are sneakers. My friends tease me every time I use the “washroom,” as the word isn’t used in the US — “bathroom”, “toilet” and “restroom” are often used instead. Similarly, when I asked my friend what marks he got on his test, he gave me a confused look. People in the US only say “grades”.
Though certain Canadian expressions sound very different from our North American neighbor, they share the same original language because both served as colonies of the former British Empire. This cultural heritage survives through speech and language.
Unlike American English, most Canadian spellings are similar to the British words. In the US, words like “harbour” and “colour” are spelled without the “u”. Even so, some words changed in Canada, like “aluminum (铝)”. British people spell and pronounce this word as “aluminium”.
As a result, Canadian English has developed an identity of its own. For instance, we cannot forget the most important word in Canadian English: sorry. While it isn’t really the most important word, Canadians have a reputation for being polite and friendly. I, for one, want to protect that reputation and honor my Canadian roots, even while I’m in the United States.
“Language brings with it an identity and a culture,” wrote South African comedian Trevor Noah in his book, Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood. “A language barrier says ” We’re different.” A shared language says “We’re the same’.”
12. Which one is wrong according to the passage?
A. All the Canadian words aren’t understood by the people in the US.
B. Englishes vary only in vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation.
C. A word may be pronounced differently in the same city.
D. The author didn’t realize the differences until attending an American university.
13. Why the word “sorry” is so important in Canada?
A. Because it is commonly used in Canada.
B. Because it shows the politeness and friendliness of Canadians.
C. Because people can understand it more easily.
D. Because its meaning in Canada is different from that in other countries.
14. We can learn from the text that .
A. language is an important carrier of culture B. most of the languages have the same origin
C. one culture’s meat is another culture’s poison D. honesty is the key to crossing the language barrier
15. Which can be the best title of the passage?
A. Language defines the identity of people
B. The differences in spelling, vocabulary and pronunciations
C. The differences between Canadian and American English
D. Different places, different languages.

In 2007, he swam one kilometer in the North Pole to draw attention to the melting Arctic ice due to climate change.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. A

13 Why the word “sorry” is so important in Canada?
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. A 15. C

【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Language brings with it an identity and a culture(语言带来了身份和文化)”可知,语言是文化的重要载体。故选A。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Unlike American English, most Canadian spellings are similar to the British words.(与美式英语不同,大多数加拿大英语的拼写与英式英语相似)”结合文章通过作者的亲身经历,介绍了加拿大英语与美国英语的差异可知,C选项“加拿大英语和美国英语的差异”最符合文章标题。故选C。
