Maya Lin, designer and sculptor, has created some of the most iconic works and spaces with the belief that art can address important issues. Her latest projects are no different, from museums to sculptures for Presidential centers.
Lin, 62, grew up in Ohio, the daughter of college professors who were Chinese immigrants. As a 21-year-old student at Yale University, she gained national prominence when her entry won a design competition for the new Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Her winning design — two black granite (花岗岩) walls engraved with the names of US service members who died in the Vietnam War (1954-1975) or remain missing — is considered one of the most influential in modern architecture.
Lin went on to design the 1989 Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, and dozens of other projects globally, all with social and environmental justice in mind. She told The Wall Street Journal she uses facts in her art. She said, “I am going to present you with what the story is, but I am not going to draw the conclusion for you.” Currently underway is Lin’s plan for the new Museum of Chinese in America in New York City. Lin said she wants it to be a celebration of Chinese American stories and contributions to the country.
Lin is also designing a sculpture to honor former President Barack Obama’s mother, who died in 1995, at the Obama Presidential Center in Illinois. When Obama awarded Lin the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016, he called her work “physical acts of poetry, each reminding us that the most important element in art or architecture is human emotion.”

The words “caring” and “empathetic” (共情的) aren’t ones normally associated with technology. Yearsley, an Australian enterpriser who is expert in artificial intelligence (AI), is trying to change that.
Yearsley is the founder of Akin, a robotics startup that currently uses a tablet-based system to help users manage the tasks related to home life, whether that’s planning meals or reminding you to pay your cell phone bill. Current home devices made by Google or Amazon or Apple use predictive AI to track patterns, strengthen behaviors and manipulate (操控) buying decisions, some of which, she assumes, are questionable or just unhealthy.
In contrast, the AI that she is developing will be designed to run the human home, encouraging healthful decisions such as taking a nightly walk, refilling the fridge and supporting social interactions like lunches or birthday celebrations with friends. “It’s the hardest AI I have ever built for it’s a complex system,” Yearsley says.
Yearsley began developing the Akin technology in 2017, when she realized the need to better manage the home is hugely ignored. Besides, she realized that women unequally bear the burden of household work. A United Nations’ report estimates that women do2.6 times the amount of unpaid care and domestic work that men do, or close to 30 hours per week in the U. S. alone.
While Yearsley pictures an army of robots someday helping with routine homemade tasks, the first display for Akin will take time and money. Akin has received some early seed money from a handful of investors, and was recently selected as a finalist for tech giant LG Nova’s Mission for the Future program, an annual challenge that seeks to identify businesses having potential to improve life and lead society into the future.
28.What might the Akin’s AI system suggest?
A.Consuming more drinks to enjoy yourself. B.Staying up late working to make more money.
C.Spending more time staying with your family. D.Purchasing products that may attract you.
29.What made Yearsley develop the Akin’s AI system?
A.The high cost of current home devices. B.Akin’s becoming a finalist for a program.
C.Financial support from investors. D.Heavy burden of housewives.
30.What can be used to describe the Akin’s AI system?
A.Questionable and unhealthy. B.Unstable and insecure.
C.Thoughtful and innovative. D.Mature and ideal.
31.What’s the purpose of the text?
A.To introduce a futuristic AI system. B.To compare two companies’ AI systems.
C.To call on people to care about housewives. D.To seek support for an AI expert.

When you have to cancel your Thanksgiving plans due to the spread of the COVID-19, you may find yourself craving companionship as much as that pumpkin pie. That’s because parts of the brain respond to loneliness much like they react to hunger, according to a study in Nature Neuroscience.
Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology scanned the brains of 40 healthy, social young adults after 10 hours of either fasting (禁食) or social isolation (隔离). They found that after being alone, participants’ neurological responses to social signals were similar to hungry people reacting to food — that is, certain areas of the brain linked to desire were turned on to start working.
For an isolated person, a picture of people laughing together caused the same areas of the brain to light up as when a hungry person looked at a big plate of pasta.
“Just like hunger is an unpleasant sensation that motivates us to seek out food and thirst motivates us to seek out water, loneliness is a biological need that motivates us to reconnect to others,” Holt-Lunstad told Insider.
Researchers were surprised to find that people who were prevented from socializing became much more focused on that need, and less reactive to hunger. As their loneliness increased, they became less responsive to images of food.
These latest findings suggest that the relationship between food and loneliness might be more complicated than we thought, despite the popular opinion of stress-eating to cope with social isolation. More research is needed to understand the complex ways people deal with loneliness.
Studies like this can help scientists understand how the brain processes loneliness, and possibly reduce the negative consequences. However, although loneliness may be similar to hunger, fixing it isn’t as easy as serving someone a hearty dinner because people are unique and they need varying levels of social interactions to meet their needs.
32.The underlined word “craving” in the first paragraph can be replaced by .
A.avoiding B.desiring C.preferring D.ignoring
33.Researchers scanned the brains of the young adults .
A.to find their brain responses to both loneliness and hunger
B.to provide explanations for their feeling lonely and hungry
C.to find how loneliness can have a negative impact on health
D.after they have been hungry and socially isolated for 10 hours
34.What conclusion can be drawn from what Holt-Lunstad said in Paragraph 4?
A.Hunger is an unpleasant sensation.
B.Hunger and thirst motivate us to feed ourselves.
C.Socializing is supposed to be basic human need as it is.
D.The effects of loneliness on health are comparable to other factors.
35.What does the last paragraph imply?
A.Loneliness may be fixed just as hunger is satisfied.
B.Situations of loneliness are complicated and hard to cope with.
C.Scientists have understood how the brain processes loneliness.
D.Loneliness is such a common and serious problem that we all have to suffer.

根据划线词上文“When you have to cancel your Thanksgiving plans due to the spread of the COVID-19, you may find yourself”以及后文“That’s because parts of the brain respond to loneliness much like they react to hunger, according to a study in Nature Neuroscience. (根据《自然神经科学》的一项研究,这是因为大脑的某些部分对孤独的反应就像对饥饿的反应一样。)”可知,大脑的某些部分对孤独的反应就像对饥饿的反应一样,即说明当你因为COVID-19的传播而不得不取消感恩节计划时,你可能会发现自己对友谊的渴望和南瓜派一样强烈。故划线词意思是“渴望”。故选B。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段“They found that after being alone, participants’ neurological responses to social signals were similar to hungry people reacting to food — that is, certain areas of the brain linked to desire were turned on to start working. (他们发现,在独处之后,参与者对社交信号的神经反应与饥饿的人对食物的反应相似——也就是说,大脑中与欲望相关的某些区域被激活,开始工作。)”可知,研究人员扫描了这些年轻人的大脑是为了发现他们的大脑对孤独和饥饿的反应。故选A。
根据第四段““Just like hunger is an unpleasant sensation that motivates us to seek out food and thirst motivates us to seek out water, loneliness is a biological need that motivates us to reconnect to others,” Holt-Lunstad told Insider. (“就像饥饿是一种不愉快的感觉,促使我们去寻找食物,口渴促使我们去寻找水一样,孤独是一种生理需求,促使我们与他人重新建立联系,”Holt-Lunstad告诉内幕网。)”可推知,交际本来就应该是人类的基本需求。故选C。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Studies like this can help scientists understand how the brain processes loneliness, and possibly reduce the negative consequences. However, although loneliness may be similar to hunger, fixing it isn’t as easy as serving someone a hearty dinner because people are unique and they need varying levels of social interactions to meet their needs. (这样的研究可以帮助科学家了解大脑是如何处理孤独的,并可能减少消极后果。然而,尽管孤独可能类似于饥饿,但解决它并不像为某人提供丰盛的晚餐那么容易,因为每个人都是独一无二的,他们需要不同程度的社会互动来满足他们的需求。)”可推知,最后一段暗示了孤独的情况很复杂,很难处理。故选B。

How to Overcome Obstacles (障碍)
When you are faced with obstacles, problems and challenges, it’s easy to become frustrated, especially when the circumstances are unfamiliar and seem a little threatening and urgent. 36
Gain necessary resources. At times you simply do not have the necessary resources to help you deal with the situation at hand. In such circumstances you must question what pieces of the puzzle you are currently missing. 37
38 Often the answers you need to help you overcome the obstacles in your lives can be found by simply talking to others. In fact, other people might have already dealt with and successfully overcome the circumstances you find yourself in. You must therefore seek out mentors (导师, 教练), life coaches or experts to help you find the answers needed to move towards your goals or objectives.
Experiment in new directions. 39 Try new things and move in new directions that you never considered before. Asking effective questions will help you gain new insights into the obstacles that are standing in your way.
Learn from failures. 40 They can help you achieve your goals. Take time to learn from every unsuccessful attempt, from every failed result, and from every unsatisfactory outcome. The more you learn, the more you will grow and the better you will be able to deal with the obstacles that lie ahead on your path.
A.Ask for guidance.
B.Accept any circumstances.
C.Progress is built upon many mistakes.
D.The path less traveled will make the difference in the end.
E.Just break down what you need to do to overcome this obstacle.
F.Then look for the necessary tools, strategies and knowledge to help you.
G.However, keep in mind that there are always things you can do to move forward.

A. misfortune不幸;B. accident事故;C. result结果;D. difference差别。 故选A项。
A. suspected怀疑;B. wondered想知道;C. noticed注意;D. concluded推断,结束。根据后文“he was missing a foot.”
A. cure治愈;B. cover覆盖;C. warm温暖的;D. sweep清扫。根据下文“which helped ease the discomfort Triumph felt whenever he tried to put __44__ on it,”可知,用袜子给他的残肢盖上,是为了减轻残肢着地的疼痛。故选B项。
A. weight重量;B. head头;C. hope希望;D. burden负担。 故选A项。
A. continue继续;B. leave留下,离开;C. stick粘贴,坚持;D. stop停止。根据前文的“She used socks”和下文的“She began searching the Internet for pet prostheses (假体)”可知,尽管Marley已经帮助小考拉改善了状况,但她觉得自己不能止步于此,于是开始寻求进一步的帮助。故选D项。
根据下文的“I was told it couldn’t be done”可知,Marley没有找到任何考拉可以用的假体。故选C项。
A. take on承担,呈现;B. figure out计算,弄明白;C. seek for寻找;D. look into调查。根据后文“the case, but they were unsuccessful after several ”可知,一家专门从事动物假体制作的公司愿意接手这件事,表示“接手,承担”应使用动词词组take on。故选A项。
A. examinations考试;B. attempts尝试;C. discussions讨论;D. treatments治疗。
A. solution解决办法;B. inspiration灵感;C. support支持;D. response响应。根据下文的“he created a pink rubber boot, which could help make Triumph’s __53__ of movement return”可知,最终Marley找到了解决办法。故选A项。
A. happened发生;B. agreed同意;C. volunteered自愿;D. recommended推荐。根据上文的“She mentioned Triumph’s trouble to her dental prosthetist (矫形器师) Jon Doulman”和生活实际可知,Marley只是顺带提到了Triumph的情况,并非特意去寻求Jon的帮助,所以Jon是主动提出帮助的。故选C项。

A. preference偏好;B. memory记忆;C. freedom自由;D. intention打算。根据下文的“Once the boot was __55__, he did a little jump, and then ran around.”
根据前文“Marley did find a company specializing in animal prostheses that would like to __47__ the case, but they were unsuccessful after several __48__.” 故选A项。
A. adjusted调整;B. attached依附;C. completed完成;D. confirmed确认。根据后文“he did a little jump, and then ran around.”

分析句子结构,空白处在句子中作谓语,it was the first time that 为固定句型,从句使用过去完成时态,故填had taken。
分析句子成分可知,此处用作介词with宾语,根据句意以及下文“which included Chinese painting and calligraphy”应使用复数形式,故填activities。
It turned out to be “结果是,证明是”,此处应使用不定式和前面的turned out构成复合谓语,故填to be。

I was in New York City on a school trip. I called home from a pay phone, and my little sister, Alex, said four envelopes had arrived: Georgetown, Cornell, William and Mary and the University of Massachusetts. She then opened and read them to me in her ten-year-old voice: “We regret that we do not have a place for you...” Rejected from Georgetown. “You were one of many qualified candidates...” Rejected from Cornell. And number seventy-three on a waiting list of seventy-five at William and Mary. Accepted to U Mass, my safety school.
I didn’t digest the rejections immediately. I toured the United Nations, took train home and went back to school. Then I realized that other people had gotten into schools they really wanted to go to. Up to that point in my seventeen years, I hadn’t really failed at anything. I got good grades, made the school team and scored well on my SATs. I hadn’t experienced any major disappointments in my life, no deaths, no disease, no divorce, no cavities (龋齿) even. So being rejected seemed disastrous.
I had always assumed I’d go to one of the“good schools.”I really wanted to be chosen: This is the place for smart people, and we want you. U Mass, on the other hand, had the reputation of being a party school to which, come September, I’d be headed with the guy who sat next to me in tenth-grade history and who, during tests, left his book open on the floor and turned the pages with his feet.
I did not get active like my friend Heather, who, having been rejected by her first choice, made I Love Lucy-style plans to drive to the Duke campus with her soccer ball and her science-fair project to show the admissions board(招生委员会) exactly what they were rejecting. I simply said things like, “I’ve decided to give up the undergraduate degree and take a cake-decorating course.” The subtext in this was: I’m stupid. The world isn’t fair.

(1)续写词数应为150左右;

I remained bitter until one day, my father sat me down. Having noticed my sadness, he asked what was troubling me. I opened my heart to him, pouring out my frustrations about the rejections and my fears for the future. “I always thought I’d get into one of the good schools, Dad. Now I feel like a failure, like I’m not good enough.” After listening attentively for a while, my father gently reminded me of all my accomplishments — the countless projects I had excelled in, the teams I had led, and the awards I had earned. He concluded with a reassuring smile. “I understand how painful these rejections feel, but they are not a reflection of your worth. I know you have the strength to overcome this challenge, and I will he here to support you every step of the way.”
Deeply touched by his words. I began to assess my situation. My father helped me realize that dwelling on the rejections would only hinder me from reaching my full potential.True success is not defined by prestige, but by how we respond to life’s challenges. Changing my mindset from self-pity to determination, I decided to embrace the opportunities at the University of Massachusetts, knowing my journey would be shaped by my willingness to grow. With a renewed sense of purpose, I dived into my studies, joined campus organizations, and discovered new passions that enriched my life in ways I had never imagined. The initial disappointment soon gave way to anticipation and excitement. Looking back now, I am forever grateful to my father for his unwavering support and wisdom, which have been invaluable in shaping the person I am today.

D

Dear Bob,
How is everything going? In your last letter, you asked me about our eco-friendly study trip. I am pleased to share relevant details of the trip with you. The eco-friendly study trip, aimed to call on students to enjoy the scenery without damaging the natural environment, was organized by our school last Friday. All students and teachers set out at 8am and returned at 6pm. We all enjoyed this unforgettable trip to Mount Huang, which is one of the most famous mountains in China. Before we climbed the mountain, we were required to take paper bags to collect litters along the way. Through this way, we could know the true meaning of eco-friendly study trip.
The short journey enriched my life experience, relaxed myself and most importantly, helped me know the importance of living in harmony with nature.

D

(1)续写词数应为150左右;
