The Chinese government plans to make soccer the number one sport in the country. By 2050 it wants to get 50 million children and adults to play the game.
With the largest population in the world, China has never been really good at the world’s most popular sport. According to the government, 20,000 training centres are planned and 70,000 new soccer fields will be built within the next decades. It also wants to set up soccer schools and offer young players more training programs.
FIFA hopes that the China’s desire to become a global player in soccer will raise the country’s rankings, currently at number 80 in the FIFA list. In contrast to men, who have only qualified for the World Cup once in 2002, Chinese women are more successful in the sport. They have even made it to the World Cup finals in 1999.
China’s leader Xi Jinping is the driving force behind the new sport plan. He loves soccer and played the game during his youth. Xi wants China to play a major role in Asia and maybe even win the World Cup one day. Recently, Chinese billionaires have started to invest in China’s Super League, attracting top European players to the country. Guangzhou Evergrande, one of China’s top teams, has paid 45 million dollars for Athletico Madrid top star Jackson Martinez.
But before China reaches its goal, there is still a long way in front and a lot to do.
Questions:
11. According to the Chinese government’s plan, how many children and adults are to play soccer by 2050?

【答案】14.B 15.A 16.B
You may have already heard about the trimester system in Western universities. For example, in the UK, an academic year is usually divided into three semesters, each made up of 10 weeks --- the autumn semester (October to December), the spring semester (January to March) and the summer semester (April to June). This system is believed to bring more flexibility when scheduling classes, social practice and personal projects.
Now China is introducing the system to its own students. In fact, nearly half of the country’s “Project 985” universities have already added the third semester into their academic timetable. But our trimester system is a little bit different from that in the West.
Take China University of Political science and Law (CUPL) as an example, which has started to implement the new schedule from this month. Its academic year will now be divided into the autumn semester (September to January), the spring semester (February to June) and the summer semester (July).
Lu Chunlong, director of the dean’s office at CUPL, told The Beijing News that during summer terms students would be able to take classes in other subjects. They are also encouraged to join courses in the form of social practice. It’s hoped that this new method will expose students to a broader and more diverse academic environment and help them to get their career plans on track.
However, some students point out that if they take summer term courses, they would have to attend classes every day without having time to digest what they’ve learned.
This is why Lu suggests that students don’t overdo it during summer. “One course is the best, two tops,” she advises.
But no matter the changes in academic schedules, it’s how you plan your studies that really matters. After all, what’s important is not how the academic year is divided, but how the studying contents are distributed among each semester.
Questions:
14. What’s the advantage of the Western trimester system according to the passage?
15. Which of the following is true about the Chinese trimester?

Exploring the growth of plant-based dairy
Plant-based milk is the largest plant-based group in North America. It grew five per cent last year, with sales of plant-based dairy products 31 $2billion.
There are many reasons for the popularity of plant-based milks. As well as a(n) 32 in the number of vegans (素食主义者) and plant-based diets due to health and moral grounds, environmental 33 are also driving uptake with supporters claiming that plant milk has a lower greenhouse gas footprint than dairy production-although the overall picture is highly complex and the figures are questioned by the dairy industry. Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
Last weekend I visited Rome for the first time. I spent three busy days in the Italian capital, seeing lots of tourist attractions and walking down streets lit with Christmas decorations. Here are the things that I loved most about the city.
Rome is one of the most ancient cities in the world and is full of wonderful relics from its distant past. These monuments include the Roman Forum and the vast Coliseum where gladiators used to fight each other until death and hunt exotic animals. The ruins of buildings and temples are fascinating: you can’t quite believe how old they are.
I studied the masterpieces of the Renaissance period at university and was very excited to see them in real life. We walked around the museum in Vatican City and saw plenty of famous sculptures. The best part of the visit was, without a doubt, the Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted in the early 16th century by the great Michelangelo. It was so breathtaking that I couldn’t tear my eyes away from it.
In Rome, there is a lot of food on offer for tourists but some of it isn’t very good quality. I made an effort to find authentic restaurants to taste the popular meals of the region, like pasta with tomato, onion and bacon. I also loved eating ice cream and hot chocolate under the Christmas lights.
Rome has lots of luxury boutiques but also plenty of shops that were more in my price range! It was a perfect opportunity to go and buy presents for my family and friends. There was also a Christmas market, where I bought a sparkly decoration for the tree.
I love seeing new places, especially capital cities. I have been very lucky this year because I also visited Amsterdam and New York in the summer. Hopefully I’ll get to travel even more in the future. I would love to see Prague, Budapest and explore other places outside of Europe. Where do you think I should go next?

A.The history of Vatican City.
B.The life story of Michelangelo.
C.The art-related activities during the visit.
D.The literature of the Renaissance period.
59.According to the passage, when visiting Rome you should be careful in choosing the ________.

【答案】56.D 57.B 58.C 59.A
根据第二段划线词所在句“These monuments include the Roman Forum and the vast Coliseum where gladiators used to fight each other until death and hunt exotic animals.(这些遗迹包括古罗马广场和巨大的斗兽场,gladiators过去常常在那里战斗至死,猎杀外来动物)”可知,划线词在where引导的定语从句中作主语,由描述的行为“互相殴斗,猎杀动物”推断,应指斗兽场里的角斗士。故选D项。
根据第二段“The ruins of buildings and temples are fascinating: you can’t quite believe how old they are.(建筑物和神殿的废墟令人着迷:你简直不敢相信它们有多古老)”可知,作者主要是因为建筑物和神殿的废墟的历史悠久而觉得它们极具魅力。故选B项。
根据第三段“I studied the masterpieces of the Renaissance period at university and was very excited to see them in real life. We walked around the museum in Vatican City and saw plenty of famous sculptures. Volunteering is a good way for teenagers to make a difference and meet new people. Here are a few volunteer opportunities that you could encourage your teen to take up.
Help a local food bank
Food banks always welcome donations and new volunteers. They provide perfect volunteering opportunities for those who are interested in helping the homeless. Your teen would be involved in anything, from preparing meals to working behind the scenes to repack donated food items, serving food, and carrying boxes.
Help at a soup kitchen
A soup kitchen is one of the places where the hungry can get free or affordable meals (usually soup and bread). Most soup kitchens run mainly on donations and the generosity of people. As a soup kitchen volunteer, your child may be made to clean the tables and plates, help distribute food, cook food, and more.
Volunteer for Meals on Wheels
By volunteering for Meals on Wheels, your teen will deliver nutritious meals to the elderly or the disabled. It’s perfect for teens who have just received their driving license and love any reason to get behind the wheel! They can make a huge impact in a short amount of time. Similarly, your teen can also volunteer in their kitchen and prepare meals for delivery. With a simple gesture, your teen can bring millions of smiles to people’s lives.
Work with Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to build or improve a place that someone could call home. Besides helping the community, your teen will learn valuable skills such as repairing fundraising, painting, and building. You can sign them up for long-term projects or a one-time program.
60.What do a local food bank and a soup kitchen have in common?
A.Their sources of food. B.Volunteers need to price the food.
C.They provide food for volunteers. D.The locations are approachable.
61.Who would be the most suitable for Meals on Wheels?

C.Jack, who is fond of driving. D.Peter, who is good at playing football
62.Which would you choose if you want to learn some skills?
A.A local food bank. B.A soup kitchen.
C.Meals on Wheels. D.Habitat for Humanity.
【答案】60.A 61.C 62.D
根据第一项活动“Food banks always welcome donations and new volunteers. They provide perfect volunteering opportunities for those who are interested in helping the homeless.(食品银行总是欢迎捐款和新的志愿者。他们为那些有兴趣帮助无家可归者的人提供了完美的志愿服务机会)”以及第二项活动“A soup kitchen is one of the places where the hungry can get free or affordable meals (usually soup and bread). Most soup kitchens run primarily on donations and the generosity of people.(施粥处是饥饿的人可以得到免费或负担得起的食物(通常是汤和面包)的地方之一。大多数施粥所主要靠捐款和人们的慷慨来运转)”可知,这两项活动的食物都是来自捐赠,即它们有相似的食物来源。故A项正确。
61.细节理解题。根据第三项活动的介绍“By volunteering for Meals on Wheels, your teen will deliver nutritious meals to the elderly or the disabled. It’s perfect for teens who have just received their driving license and love any reason to get behind the wheel!(通过“送餐上门”的志愿活动,你的孩子将为老人或残疾人提供有营养的饭菜。这对刚刚收到他们的驾驶执照和喜欢任何理由坐在方向盘后面的青少年是完美的!)”可知,Meals on Wheels这一项目主要是给老人和残疾人送餐,所以会开车是一个很大的优势。因此喜欢开车的Jack最适合Meals on Wheels。故C项正确。
62.细节理解题。根据第四项活动的介绍“Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to build or improve a place that someone could call home. Besides helping the community, your teen will learn valuable skills such as repairing, fundraising, painting, and building.(Habitat for Humanity的使命是建造或改善一个人们可以称之为家的地方。除了帮助社区,你的孩子还会学到有价值的技能,比如修理、筹款、绘画和建筑)”可知,在Habitat for Humanity这项活动中,青少年可以学到多种技能。故D项正确。

To say that the child learns by imitation and that the way to teach is to set a good example oversimplifies. No child imitates every action he sees. Sometimes, the example the parent wants him to follow is ignored while he takes over contrary patterns from some other example. Therefore, we must turn to a more subtle theory than “Monkey see, monkey do”.
Look at it from the child’s point of view. Here he is in a new situation, lacking a ready response. He is seeking a response which will gain certain ends. If he lacks a ready response for the situation, and cannot reason out what to do, he observes a model who seems able to get the right result. The child looks for an authority or expert who can show what to do.
There is a second element at work in this situation. The child may be able to achieve his immediate goal only to find that his method brings criticism from people who observe him. When shouting across the house achieves his immediate end of delivering a message, he is told emphatically that such a screaming is unpleasant, that he should walk into the next room and say his say quietly. Thus, the desire to solve any objective situation is overlaid with the desire to solve it properly. One of the early things the child learns is that he gets more affection and approval when his parents like his response. Then other adults award some actions and criticize others. If one is to maintain the support of others and his own self-respect, he must adopt responses his social group approves.
In finding trial responses, the learner does not choose models at random. He imitates the person who seems a good person to be like, rather than a person whose social status he wished to avoid. If the pupil wants to be good violinist, he will observe and try to copy the techniques of capable players.
Admiration of one quality often leads us to admire a person as a whole, and he becomes an identifying figure. We use some people as models over a wide range of situations, imitating much that they do. We learn that they are dependable and rewarding models because imitating them leads to success.
63.According to the passage, to teach a child to learn something, parents should _________.
A.follow the theory of imitation B.set a good example for the child to copy
C.simplify each action shown to the child D.view from the child’s perspective
64.Which of the following situation will lead a child to seek for a model?
A.The child is blamed by parents for his/her wrongdoing.
B.The child is in trouble and cannot figure out an approach.
C.The child encounters a professional who can get the right result.
D.The child comes up with a solution to an issue.
65.It can be inferred that children usually imitate people _________.
A.whose actions are consistent with theirs B.who enjoy a high social status
C.whose talent and skill are extraordinary D.whom they want to be shaped into
66.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The factors determining children’s imitation.
B.The significance of learning by imitation.
C.The way children choose models.
D.The reason for parenting by imitation.
【答案】63.D 64.B 65.D 66.A
根据第二段中“Look at it from the child’s point of view. (从孩子的角度看问题)”可知,要教孩子学东西,父母应该站在孩子的角度看问题。故选D项。
64.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Here he is in a new situation, lacking a ready response. He is seeking a response which will gain certain ends. If he lacks a ready response for the situation, and cannot reason out what to do, he observes a model who seems able to get the right result. The child looks for an authority or expert who can show what to do. (现在他处在一个新的环境中,缺乏现成的回应。他正在寻求一种能达到某种目的的回应。如果他对这种情况缺乏现成的回应,无法推理出该怎么做,他会观察一个似乎能够得到正确结果的榜样。孩子们会寻找权威或专家来告诉他们该怎么做)”可知,当孩子遇到困难,想不出办法时,他就会寻找一个榜样。故选B项。
65.推理判断题。根据第四段中“In finding trial responses, the learner does not choose models at random. He imitates the person who seems a good person to be like, rather than a person whose social status he wished to avoid. (在寻找试验回应时,学习者并不是随机选择榜样的。他模仿那些看起来不错的人,而不是模仿那些他希望避免其社会地位的人)”可推知,孩子选择模仿他们想要被塑造成的人。故选D项。
66.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中“Look at it from the child’s point of view. (从孩子的角度看问题)”、第三段中“There is a second element at work in this situation. (在这种情况下,还有第二个因素在起作用)”和第四段中“In finding trial responses, the learner does not choose models at random. (在寻找试验回应时,学习者并不是随机选择榜样的)”可知,文章指出传统的“模仿学习”观点过于简化,实际上孩子不会盲目模仿所有行为,为此向读者介绍了决定儿童模仿行为的因素,包括他们倾向于模仿能带来正确结果的权威或专家,考虑社会接受度,并选择模仿看起来不错的人物。故选A项。

E.Create compare-and-contrast tables for different concepts/theories.
F.It’s also great to hear other people’s thoughts on the course material in case there’s anything you missed or misinterpreted.
Do you ever find yourself studying really hard for a test but ultimately not doing so well? You spent hours reviewing your notes, only to receive a grade that doesn’t reflect your hard work. 67 Below are a couple of active studying methods that I found worked best for me.
Method #1: Try explaining the concepts/theories that you’re studying to family members or friends. If you can explain it to them to a point where they can understand it, then that means you understand it.
Method #2: 68 This helps our brain with classifying information. If you can fill up a table, that means you know enough about them. Understanding their similarities and differences will also be helpful for a test.
Method #3: Study with friends. If you’re able to stay focused, studying with a group might be more fun and motivating than studying alone. 69 Pick potential test topics and hold discussions to gain insight into different ways of thinking about a problem.
Method #4: This one shouldn’t be much of a surprise - flashcards. Flashcards are a great way to memorize important material! To make it more fun, write your flashcards using colorful pens and highlight important parts.
70 Studying can be boring, but finding ways to make it more fun can really help you do well on your tests. So don’t lose motivation - you’ve got this!

IV. Summary Writing (10分)
71.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.
Functions of a Speech
The art of public speaking began in ancient Greece over 2, 000 years ago. The spoken word can handle various vital functions: persuading or inspiring, informing, paying compliment, entertaining, or simply introducing someone or something or accepting something. Over the past years, the human voice has helped guide us over the ups and downs of what was certainly a stormy time.
Persuasion is used in dealing with or reuniting different points of view. When the leaders met in Copenhagen in December 2009, persuasive words from activists encouraged them to commit themselves to firmer action. Inspirational speeches challenge the emotions. They focus on topics and matters that are close to people's hearts. During wars, generals used inspiring speeches to prepare the troops for battle.
A speech that conveys knowledge and enhances understanding can inform us. The information must be clear, accurate, and expressed in a meaningful and interesting way. Informative speeches from World Health Organization officials helped people to keep their panic under control so they could take sensible protection.
Sad events are never easy to deal with but a speech that pays tribute to the loss of a loved one and gives praise for their contribution can be comforting. Madonna's speech about Michael Jackson, after his death, highlighted the fact that he will continue to live on through his music. It's not only in world meetings where public speaking plays an important role. It can also be surprisingly helpful in the course of our own lives.
On a more personal level, a friend may be upset and need comforting. Or you might be asked to introduce a speaker at a family event or to speak at a wedding, where your language will be needed to move people or make them laugh.
Great speaking ability is not something we're born with. For a brilliant speech, there are rules that you can put to good use. To learn those rules you have to practice and learn from some outstanding speeches in the past.

V. Translation (15分)
Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.
(involve)
All the people involved in the accident have been punished.
All the people involved in the accident have been punished.
(despite)
Despite the great difficulties, they overcame the obstacles and achieved their dreams.
表示“尽管困难重重”用介词despite加名词构成介词短语despite the great difficulties,作状语;本句描述过去发生的事情,应用一般过去时,谓语动词用过去式,表示“他们还是克服了障碍并实现了梦想”为they overcame the obstacles and achieved their dreams,是主谓宾句型,动词短语achieved their dreams和overcame the obstacles并列。 Despite the great difficulties, they overcame the obstacles and achieved their dreams.
(leave)
His answer was alive with showing off, but didn't get to any point at all, leaving all the interviewers looking at each other speechlessly.
His answer was alive with showing off, but didn't get to any point at all, leaving all the interviewers looking at each other speechlessly。
(flood)
As soon as they heard that the newly launched electric car was sold at a 10% discount, consumers flooded into the car dealership for a test drive.
翻译为as soon as 引导状语从句;“听说”翻译为heard,因从句表示的是过去发生的动作,谓语动词使用一般过去时;“新上市的”翻译为newly launched;“打9折出售”翻译为was sold at a 10% discount ;“涌入”使用flood into,因句子表示的是过去发生的动作,谓语动词使用一般过去时;“汽车销售店”为car dealership;“试驾”为for a test drive。 As soon as they heard that the newly launched electric car was sold at a 10% discount, consumers flooded into the car dealership for a test drive。

The Dilemma of Persistence and Surrender
As a freshman at Mingqi High School, I have encountered many forks in the road of my life. Among the numerous plans and aspirations I’ve set for myself, one stands out — my decision to learn the piano. Initially, the thought of mastering this elegant instrument filled me with enthusiasm, but soon, the rigorous practice and complex theory took their toll. I surrendered, overwhelmed by the challenge.
Looking back, I realize that my surrender was a result of my lack of resilience. I failed to persevere when faced with difficulties. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: giving up too easily can lead to missed opportunities and unfulfilled dreams. Now, I strive to be more determined, understanding that true growth lies in overcoming obstacles, not avoiding them. Persistence, not surrender, is the key to success.

An apparent increase in the level of lactose intolerance (乳糖不耐受) in developed countries is also helping to increase demand.
The range of plant-based milks also allows for consumers to 34 their tastes and identities as cafés and restaurants open up after lockdown. As one industry analyst said earlier this year, “To choose your 35 type of plant-based milk in Starbucks seems to be a way of identifying yourself.”
While dairy milk has long been seen as a drink or a meal 36 -for example, being used as the material to make food or with cereal (谷物)-here are increasing signs thatplant-based drinks 37 those with a thicker, more yogurt-like texture (质地) or those sold in individual 38 -are being seen as a healthy snack. Research by the Brisan Group suggests that up to a third of these products are viewed as a snack, and 61 per cent are viewed as “a treat.”
Globally soy milk products 39 the most popular and they accounted for 29.5 per cent of income globally in 2019. Coconut-based drinks are one of the fastest 40 parts, predicted to increase 8.6 per cent between 2020 and 2027. Across all types of plant milk, plain flavours have the highest sales, accounting for 71.1 per cent of the total value.

A.Lucy, who prefers cooking. B.Linda, who likes drawing.
C.Jack, who is fond of driving. D.Peter, who is good at playing football
62.Which would you choose if you want to learn some skills?
A.A local food bank. B.A soup kitchen.
C.Meals on Wheels. D.Habitat for Humanity.

Great speaking ability is not something we're born with. For a brilliant speech, there are rules that you can put to good use. To learn those rules you have to practice and learn from some outstanding speeches in the past.
