M: I’ll talk about the marathons I ran these years. My first marathon was in Okinawa, Japan. On the morning of the race, I was pretty nervous. But the weather was beautiful, the atmosphere was fantastic, and my training beforehand was just enough — I finished the race! It was an amazing feeling! My favorite marathon was the one in Reykjavik, Iceland. Iceland is a beautiful country and the scenery along the course was breathtaking. The most difficult race was in Kuala Lumpur. First of all, it was really hot. But, my biggest mistake was that I forgot to pack my running shoes! Can you believe it? So, the day before the race, I had to buy new shoes and during the race, my feet were pretty painful! In St. Petersburg, which is in Russia, I managed to finish in third place! This was a real shock. After my last race in Bangkok, Thailand, I had completed my challenge. I still enjoy running. I’m currently preparing for a full marathon in Stockholm. And maybe I’ll try running 20 marathons in the new year!

Everybody, at some point in their lives, has experienced failure. It could be something as simple as not getting the job you wanted, or getting fewer marks even after hard work. But what makes you is not your failure, but how you get back up after being hit.
Once, a young school boy was caught in a fire accident in his school and was assumed that he would not live. His mother was told that he was sure to die, for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower half of his body. Even if he were to survive, he would be lame (瘸) throughout his life.
But the brave boy did not want to die nor did he want to be lame. Much to the amazement of the doctor, he did survive. But unfortunately from his waist down, he had no ability to act. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless. Eventually he left the hospital. But his determination to walk was unshakable. At home, when he was not in bed, he had to stay in a wheelchair. One day, he threw himself from the chair and pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He reached the fence, raised himself up and then began dragging himself along the fence, firmly determined. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he would be able to walk unaided. With his iron determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk on and off, then to walk by himself and then to run.
He began to walk to school, and then run to school, to run for the joy of running. Later in college he was on the track team.
In February 1934, in New York City’s Madison Square Garden, this young man who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, who could never hope to run — this determined young man, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, ran the world’s fastest mile.
A good example of the power of positive thinking and faith in one’s self, Glenn Cunningham continues to be an inspiration (鼓舞人心的人或事) for many, and his story, an obvious evidence to how one can regain his courage even when all difficulties are piled.
24.The first paragraph is intended to ________.

A team of scientists is studying the sound of the forest in Ecuador to learn how artificial intelligence (AI) could follow animal life in recovering environments.
When scientists want to measure new forest growth, they can study large areas of land with tools like satellites. But understanding how fast and in what number wildlife is returning to an area is more difficult. Sometimes it requires an expert to listen through sound recordings and pick out animal calls.
Jorg Muller, an expert on birds, wondered if there was a different way. So, he turned to bioacoustics (生物声学), which uses sound to learn more about animal life and their living environments. Muller and his team recorded wildlife sounds in Ecuador. They first had experts listen to the recordings and list the sounds of different animals. Then, they examined the sound quality to measure the environment. Finally, they ran two weeks of recordings through an AI computer program trained to understand 75 different bird calls.
The program was able to pick out the calls on which it was trained. However, scientists wondered if the program could correctly identify the number of different kinds of plants and animals in each environment. To see if the program could do that, the team used two different controls. One was from the experts who listened to the recordings, and the second was based on examples from each environment, which can be used to understand biodiversity (生物多样性).
Since the number of sounds that are found to be used to train is limited, the AI program could only identify one-fourth of the bird calls experts could. But it was still able to correctly measure biodiversity levels in each environment, the study said. It also said the results show the AI program is a powerful tool to measure the recovery of animal societies in some forests. The study showed that biodiversity found from recordings can be measured in a cost-effective and complete way and measure environments.
There are still areas for improvement, including the lack of animal sounds on which to train AI models. And the method can only catch animals that use sound to communicate.
28.What does the study focus on?
A.Studying plant growth. B.Observing birds’ behavior.
C.Understanding AI’s effect on wildlife. D.Measuring wildlife recovery.
29.What method did the team use to learn wildlife sounds in Eduador?
A.Bioacoustics. B.Satellite recording.
C.Sound recording by AI. D.Direct observation by experts.
30.What did the AI program prove to be useful for?
A.Identifying plant species. B.Tracking weather change.
C.Measuring biodiversity levels. D.Identifying all the bird calls.
31.What did the study suggest for improvements?
A.Measuring more bird environments.
B.Catching animals that use sound to communicate.
C.Training the program on a wider variety of sounds.
D.Having experts study more and understand bird calls.

Those of us who shop online may scan customer reviews to get a better sense of products we can't judge for ourselves at a physical store. We may check out online testimonials before booking a haircut or visiting a new restaurant. But what happens if some of those reviews can't be trusted?
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently announced that it was proposing new measures to crack down on fake reviews and other practices used to mislead consumers. The commission published a proposed rule that would prohibit companies from writing or selling fake reviews, buying positive reviews, suppressing negative reviews and more.
“Our proposed rule on fake reviews shows that we're using all available means to attack deceptive advertising in the digital age,” Samuel Levine, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in a statement.
Research shows people overwhelmingly consult online reviews, but humans are also bad at telling which consumer reviews hold water and which are nonsense.
That's potentially worrisome given that nearly one in every three reviews is fake, according to one estimate.
In arguing for the proposal, the FTC cited enforcement actions it had taken against companies that manipulated reviews of their products.
In 2022, for example, the commission forced the online retailer Fashion Nova to pay $4.2 million to settle allegations (指控) that it blocked negative reviews from being posted on its website — the first FTC action involving a company's effort to hide negative reviews. For its part, Fashion Nova said in a statement to The New York Times that the FTC's allegations were “inaccurate” and that it only settled the charges to avoid “the distraction and legal fees”.
Comments on the proposed rule have to be received within 60 days of its publication in the Federal Register, after which the FTC will decide whether to issue a revised final version.
32.What is the main purpose of the FTC's proposed rule?
A.To improve the quality of products and services.
B.To protect the interests of physical stores.
C.To ban negative reviews from online platforms.
D.To ensure true reviews are presented to customers.
33.What does the underlined phrase “hold water” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A.Be credible. B.Be prejudiced. C.Be official. D.Be misleading.
34.Why was Fashion Nova forced to pay $ 4.2 million in a settlement in 2022?
A.To delete negative reviews of its products.
B.To post customer reviews on its website.
C.To resolve allegations of deceptive advertising.
D.To prevent it from facing further criticism and legal fees.
35.What can be inferred about the proposed rule?
A.It is well-received. B.It is still under review.
C.It has proven to be effective. D.It has encountered opposition.

【详情解析】
32.细节理解题。根据第二段中“The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently announced that it was proposing new measures to crack down on fake reviews and other practices used to mislead consumers. (美国联邦贸易委员会(FTC)最近宣布,将提出新措施,打击虚假评论和其他误导消费者的做法)”可知,联邦贸易委员会拟议规则的主要目的是确保向客户提供真实的评论。故选D项。
33.词句猜测题。根据第四段中“Research shows people overwhelmingly consult online reviews, but humans are also bad at telling (研究表明,绝大多数人会查阅网上评论,但人类也不善于分辨)”以及“which are nonsense (哪些是胡说八道)”可知,此处为人类也不善于分辨哪些消费者评论站得住脚,哪些是胡说八道。由此猜测,划线短语hold water为“站得住脚,可信的”意思,与A项Be credible (是可信的)意思一致。故选A项。
34.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“In 2022, for example, the commission forced the online retailer Fashion Nova to pay $4.2 million to settle allegations (指控) that it blocked negative reviews from being posted on its website — the first FTC action involving a company's effort to hide negative reviews. (例如,在2022年,委员会迫使在线零售商Fashion Nova支付420万美元。该公司被指控阻止负面评论在其网站上发布——这是FTC首次针对一家公司隐瞒负面评论的行为采取行动)”可知,Fashion Nova在2022年被迫支付420万美元的和解金是为了解决关于欺骗性广告的指控。故选C项。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Comments on the proposed rule have to be received within 60 days of its publication in the Federal Register, after which the FTC will decide whether to issue a revised final version. (对拟议规则的评论必须在《联邦公报》(Federal Register)公布后60天内收到,之后FTC将决定是否发布修订后的最终版本)”可推知,关于拟议的规则仍在审查中。故选B项。

How to Help Your Teenager Decide on a Career
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” It used to be a cute question. But now that your child is a teen, they’re either sick of hearing it or frightened because they don’t have an answer. As a parent, helping your teenager choose a career is highly important. 36
Take the pressure off
Students leaving school often experience anxiety as they struggle to decide on a life plan. Some teens worry that they’ll disappoint their parents if they don’t take a direct path to a perfect job. 37 And it’s your job to remind them of that. Career exploration for teens should be encouraged, without the pressure of upcoming expectations.
Lead by example
38 Take some time to think about how your own work might be setting an example. Teenagers are very perceptive (有感知力的) and will observe your relationship with your own work. If they see you enjoying your work, they’ll know it’s possible to find something they enjoy too.
Help them identify their strengths
A key step in helping your teenager choose a career is aiding them to understand themselves. 39 You’ll be able to help by reminding them what circumstances they work best in and what their skills and preferences are. All this information will help guide your teen through their choices.
If your teenager doesn’t have an idea of what they want to do after high school, it’s important to keep an open dialogue and gently encourage them. 40 By encouraging them to think deep, they will hopefully start to plan their future life.
A.It may be beneficial to visit a career advisor.
B.That’s why we’ve put together this practical guide here.
C.But the weight of the world doesn’t rest on their shoulders.
D.Make it your responsibility to be a safe space for your teen.
E.You’re the first and most important role model in your teen’s life.
F.A great way to promote this is asking questions about their future.
G.As their parent, you naturally know your teen and what areas they are good at.

(这就是为什么我们在这里提供这个实用的指南。)”承接前文,并引出下文,符合文意。故选B项。
37.根据前文“Students leaving school often experience anxiety as they struggle to decide on a life plan. Some teens worry that they’ll disappoint their parents if they don’t take a direct path to a perfect job. (离开学校的学生在努力决定人生计划时经常会感到焦虑。一些青少年担心,如果他们不直接找到一份完美的工作,他们会让父母失望。)”以及后文“And it’s your job to remind them of that. Career exploration for teens should be encouraged, without the pressure of upcoming expectations. (你的工作就是提醒他们这一点。应该鼓励青少年在没有预期压力的情况下进行职业探索。)”可知,前文提到年轻人会感到焦虑,后文讲述鼓励青少年在没有预期压力的情况下进行职业探索,所以前后是转折关系,空处应是表转折,C项“But the weight of the world doesn’t rest on their shoulders. (但世界的重担并没有落在他们的肩上。)”和前文构成转折关系,并引出下文,符合文意。故选C项。
38.分析设空,位于段首,是本段的中心句,根据本段小标题“Lead by example (以身作则)”可知,本段主要讲述,父母应做青少年的榜样,所以E项“You’re the first and most important role model in your teen’s life. (你是青少年生活中第一个也是最重要的榜样。)”符合本段主题,是对小标题的进一步说明。故选E项。
39.根据前文“A key step in helping your teenager choose a career is aiding them to understand themselves. (帮助青少年选择职业的关键一步是帮助他们了解自己。)”可知,G项“As their parent, you naturally know your teen and what areas they are good at.(作为他们的父母,你自然了解你的孩子,知道他们擅长哪些领域。)”是对前文的进一步说明,并引出下文“You’ll be able to help by reminding them what circumstances they work best in and what their skills and preferences are. (你可以通过提醒他们在什么情况下工作最好,他们的技能和偏好是什么来帮助他们。)”。故选G项。
40.根据前文“If your teenager doesn’t have an idea of what they want to do after high school, it’s important to keep an open dialogue and gently encourage them. (如果你的孩子不知道他们高中毕业后想做什么,保持一个开放的对话并温和地鼓励他们是很重要的)”以及后文“By encouraging them to think deep, they will hopefully start to plan their future life. (通过鼓励他们深入思考,他们有望开始计划未来的生活)”可知,此处是讲述思考自己职业的方法,所以F项“A great way to promote this is asking questions about their future. (促进这一点的一个好方法是询问他们的未来。)”符合文意,引出下文。故选F项。

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
David and George were best friends at school. They sat together in the same school classroom, shared sandwiches during lunch breaks, and had countless adventures together,
As George’s birthday approached, David noticed something that concerned him. It was George’s shoes, the soles (鞋底) of which were nearly worn through. They were no longer as comfortable as they should be, and David could tell that George needed a new pair of shoes and he decided to do something special for his friend on his birthday.
David’s thoughtful plan started with a conversation with his mum. He explained how much he cared for his friend George and how he wanted to gift him a pair of shoes for his birthday.
His mum, a kind and wise woman, agreed that it was a wonderful idea. She also wanted to teach David an important lesson about earning and giving. So, they discussed a plan together. “David,” his mum said, “I think it’s a lovely idea to buy shoes for George. But how about this? I can give you some money for doing extra housework around the house. You can earn the money you need to buy the shoes. What do you think? “David’s eyes lit up, and he smiled widely. “That’s a great idea, Mum! I want to do it. ”
David became a whirlwind (旋风) of activity around the house. He swept the floor, watered the plants, washed the clothes, and even helped his mum with the dishes. His determination to earn enough money for George’s gift shone through his every action.
As days turned into weeks, David saved penny by penny. His mum was impressed by his hard work. She knew that her son’s surprise for George would not only make his friend happy but would also teach David the joy of giving.

【参考答案】
Finally, George’s birthday came and David invited George to his home for a celebration. David led George to the living room. “George,” David said, “I have a surprise for you.” George was a little confused. David took out a present wrapped in shiny paper. He handed it to George, saying, “Happy Birthday, my friend!” George was filled with curiosity as he carefully unwrapped the gift. The surprise and happiness on his face were evident as he saw the new pair of shoes. David explained, “I wanted to get you something special for your birthday, and I saved up money to buy these shoes for you.”
George was so moved by the gift he received. He couldn’t imagine how long it took David to save the money to buy the gift. His eyes were filled with excited tears, and he gave David a big hug, “You’re an angel, David! Thanks!” David was also so happy that George liked the gift. For George, the shoes David had given him weren’t just a pair of shoes; they were a symbol of their friendship. The two friends shared a heart-warming moment, and their friendship grew even stronger. They knew that the joy of giving and the warmth of true friendship were the best gifts of all.

A.function as a brief introduction B.make preparations for statement
C.describe an unforgettable event D.introduce the topic
25.What was the doctor’s opinion about Glenn?
A.Glenn was able to walk with his own great effort.
B.Great determination could make a difference to Glenn.
C.There was a slim chance that Glenn could survive.
D.Glenn could live a normal life with the upper half of his body.
26.What do we know about Glenn?
A.Glenn took recovery exercise in hospital. B.Glenn inspired people with his moving story.
C.Glenn won the first place in Marathon. D.Glenn organized a track team in college.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Strengthen determination B.Stand up after failure
C.Go after dreams D.Failure is the mother of the success

D

Dear classmates,
After entering No.29 High School, I find large numbers of students puzzled about their future. If you are eager to solve the problem, please set your own goals.
Setting goals is of great significance in many ways. Not only does setting goals offer you a focus, enabling you to decide what to achieve, but also help you make plans in advance, manage your time well and become more confident.
But how can you set practical goals? First of all, based on your ability, set goals that can be achieved. Secondly, break big goals down into small ones, which are easier to reach. Most importantly, after setting a goal, stick to it and work hard towards it with a positive mind.
By following the tips above, I do believe you won’t be confused any more and will succeed in time.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
