Lesson 6
smash-and-grab
A smash-and-grab raid took place at the jewelry store last night.(昨晚一家珠宝店发生了一起砸窗抢劫案。)
arcade
There are many small shops in the arcade.(拱廊里有许多小商店。)在课文中,“The expensive shops in a famous arcade near Piccadilly were just opening.”
Piccadilly
Piccadilly is always crowded with tourists and shoppers.(皮卡迪利大街总是挤满了游客和购物者。)
jewellery
She has a collection of fine jewellery.(她收藏了一批精美的珠宝。)
necklace
She wore a beautiful diamond necklace.(她戴着一条漂亮的钻石项链。)课文中提到 “One man stayed at the wheel while two others with black stockings over their faces jumped out and smashed the window of the shop with iron bars. While this was going on, Mr. Taylor was upstairs. He and his staff began throwing furniture out of the window. Chairs and tables went flying into the arcade. One of the thieves was struck by a heavy statue, but he was too busy helping himself to diamonds to notice any pain. The raid was all over in three minutes, for the men scrammed into the car and it roared off. Just as it was leaving, Mr. Taylor rushed out and ran after it throwing ashtrays and vases, but it was impossible to stop the thieves. They had got away with thousands of pounds worth of diamonds.”
background
在文中 “Detectives are appealing for witnesses who may have seen anything suspicious in the area at the time of the raid. The raid took place at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The police are also interested in hearing from anyone who has any information about the getaway car or the identities of the thieves. They believe that the thieves may have had some previous experience in this type of crime and that they may have been operating in the area for some time. They are hoping to build up a picture of the thieves' background and movements.”
例如:“One man stayed at the wheel while two others with black stockings over their faces jumped out and smashed the window of the shop with iron bars.”
店主抵抗:泰勒先生和员工们采取扔家具的方式抵抗,如 “He and his staff began throwing furniture out of the window. Chairs and tables went flying into the arcade.”
劫匪逃离与警方介入:劫匪在三分钟内完成抢劫并驾车逃离,“The raid was all over in three minutes, for the men scrammed into the car and it roared off.” 之后警方展开调查,“Detectives are appealing for witnesses who may have seen anything suspicious in the area at the time of the raid... They are hoping to build up a picture of the thieves' background and movements.”
对皮卡迪利大街附近拱廊的描写,“The expensive shops in a famous arcade near Piccadilly were just opening.”
在课文中 “One man stayed at the wheel while two others with black stockings over their faces jumped out and smashed the window of the shop with iron bars. While this was going on, Mr. Taylor was upstairs.” 这里 “while this was going on” 和 “Mr. “while this was going on” 强调在劫匪砸窗抢劫的这个过程中,泰勒先生在楼上这一同时进行的状态;“Mr. Taylor was going upstairs when he heard the noise.”(泰勒先生正在上楼时听到了噪音,强调上楼过程中听到噪音这个时间点上正在进行的动作)。
too... to...
在课文中 “One of the thieves was struck by a heavy statue, but he was too busy helping himself to diamonds to notice any pain.” 这里 “too busy helping himself to diamonds to notice any pain” 使用了这个结构,意思是这个劫匪太忙于抢夺钻石以至于没有注意到疼痛。 The box is too heavy to carry.(这个箱子太重了,搬不动。)
