Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, they were not taken seriously.”
【解析】此句中 “which are found in America” 是定语从句,修饰 “animals”,描述美洲狮的生存地域;“that a wild puma had been spotted...”
【原文】“However, as the evidence began to accumulate, experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the descriptions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily similar.”
【解析】“as” 引导时间状语从句,表示 “随着”;“feel obliged to do sth.” 表达 “感到有责任做某事”;“given by people who claimed to have seen the puma” 是过去分词短语作定语,修饰 “descriptions”,其中 “who claimed to have seen the puma” 为定语从句,修饰 “people”。
【原文】“The hunt for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw 'a large cat' only five yards away from her. It immediately ran away when she saw it, and experts confirmed that a puma will not attack a human being unless it is cornered.”
【解析】“where a woman picking blackberries...”
【原文】“The search proved difficult, for the puma was often observed at one place in the morning and at another place twenty miles away in the evening. Wherever it went, it left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits. Paw prints were seen in a number of places and puma fur was found clinging to bushes. Several people complained of 'cat-like noises' at night and a businessman on a fishing trip saw the puma up a tree.”
【解析】“for” 引导原因状语从句;“Wherever it went” 为让步状语从句;“clinging to bushes” 是现在分词短语作宾语补足语。
【原文】“The experts were now fully convinced that the animal was a puma, but where had it come from? As no pumas had been reported missing from any zoo in the country, this one must have been in the possession of a private collector and somehow managed to escape. The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught. It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside.”
【解析】“be convinced that...” 表示 “确信…”;“must have been” 表示对过去情况的肯定推测;“It is disturbing to think that...” 中 “it” 作形式主语,真正主语是 “to think that...”。
【构成】“have/has been + 动词的现在分词”。例如:He has been working on this project for months.(他已经为这个项目工作了好几个月。)
I have been learning English since I was a child.(我从小就一直在学习英语。)
例如:“I have written a letter.”(我写了一封信,动作已完成)“I have been writing a letter.”(我一直在写信,强调写信过程一直在进行,可能未完成)。
She has been living in this city for ten years.(她在这个城市已经住了十年了。)
