However, according to some researches, these methods don’t work for everyone. Fortunately, there is another treatment available: transcranial magnetic stimulation or TMS, which uses magnets to stimulate regions of the brain. TMS treatments are given according to a specific schedule, including twenty to thirty sessions over a period of six weeks. During each forty- minute treatment session, a trained physician places a device on the left side of the person’s head. This device sends out magnetic pulses into the area of the brain that is involved in mood control. After completing the treatment, a person’s depression may be reduced or completely disappear. Scientists are also studying the use of TMS in the treatment of memory loss, especially in older adults. As individuals age, they tend to have more and more difficulty remembering recent events or information they have recently been exposed to. This occurs because a small area of the brain breaks down with age. To find out whether this process can be slowed, researchers at Northwestern University put together two groups of volunteers. One consisted of older adults aged 64 to 80 while the other was composed of younger adults in their 20s and 30s. Both groups were first assigned a memory task, then their performances were scored. On average, the older group scored 40 percent. Meanwhile, the younger group did better, achieving an average score of 55 percent. Next, the older adults were treated with TMS for five days in a row. After that, they were allowed to rest for a day before they were given a new memory test. In this case, the average score was better. In fact, it equaled the younger group’s score on the original test, proving that TMS had stimulated the older adults’ brains and improved their memory. 1. What is TMS used to treat in Paragraph 2? A. Arm and leg wounds. B. Severe heart diseases. C. A mental condition. D. The common cold. 2. What can we learn about TMS treatment? A. It requires the use of special equipment. B. It causes pain in sensitive parts of the body. C. It’s mainly been tried out on youngsters. D. It was approved by governments long ago. 3. How does the researchers make the conclusion? A. By analyzing the basis of a theory. B. By questioning a traditional concept. C. By emphasizing a study’s limitations. D. By comparing the results of an experiment. 4. Which magazine would this passage most likely appear? A. New Directions in Outdoor Recreation B. Technological Advances in Patient Care C. European Journal of Social Science D. Characteristics of Successful Organizations B When instant cake mixes hit US shelves in the late 1940s, sales were disappointing. Consumer psychologist Dichter went into the nation’s kitchens to find out why. His interviews with housewives led him to a surprising conclusion. The mixes made baking too easy. On Dichter’s recommendation, the next generation of mixes required the addition of a fresh egg. They became very popular and sold like hot cakes. The story is an example of a strange phenomenon in modern consumer societies. Some economists tell us that we should place more value on items that spare us work. As we increasingly consider ourselves as money-rich and time - poor, we should be prepared to spend more of the former to save the latter. But humans and these economists don’t always see eye to eye. “People believe that effort equals quality.” says Norton, behavioral economist. For most of human history, people believed that the higher up the tree you climbed, the more and better fruit you were likely to find, simply because it was less reachable. “You can make people believe that if effort is invested, the result is of higher quality.” says Norton. He has named this phenomenon the IKEA effect. IKEA, the world’s largest furniture seller, is a master of shifting labour costs to the buyer and earning praise in return. This year, Norton decided to find out exactly how. In a series of experiments, they asked people to assemble IKEA boxes, a boring task. The participants then had to bid small sums for the products of their labour. The results were impressive. People bid considerably more for their own creations even when they were plain old IKEA boxes. It seems that the act of creating something increases our sense of its worth. The IKEA effect suggests that when looking around for last - minute gift inspiration for someone you could get him a box of separate furniture pieces that have to be put together himself. Although he might dislike the confusing instructions, in the long run he will thank you. 5. What is the purpose of the addition of a fresh egg? A. To improve the taste of cakes. B. To make cakes more expensive. C. To simplify the baking process. D. To give cooks a sense of achievement. 6. What can we learn about the economists in Paragraph 2? A. They disagree with common people. B. They doubt the instant cake mix story. C. They encourage people to save money. D. They attach great importance to quality. 7. Which of the following consists with the IKEA effect? A. People pay more for the apples picked by others. B. People consider assembling furniture interesting. C. People eat more when they cook themselves. D. People choose gifts at the last minute. 8. What is a suitable title for the passage? A. A Labour of Love B. Make a Correct Judgment C. The Charm of Assembling D. Be Careful with Your Effort C Electric vehicles are now a common sight on the roads of most developed countries. But the situation in less developed countries is rather different: the only African country that has started using electric vehicles is South Africa, where electric vehicles still account for less than 0.01%. In South America, the situation is better, particularly Columbia which, in 2023, had a third of the continent’s total electric car fleet. In Turkey, the wealthy are investing in imported electric cars, but no electric cars are yet made locally, while in India, the government is promoting the purchase of electric vehicles with the reduction of tax. Firstly, the expansion of electric vehicle manufacturing is dependent on poor ability’ of manufacturers to source vastly increased quantities of vital components without which electric vehicles cannot operate. These include silicon chips which have been in short supply since 2021. Secondly, few countries now have electricity grids that are anywhere near being able to cope with the huge increase in demand for electricity that will accompany any rapid growth in electric vehicle ownership. Without adequate supplies of all the crucial ingredients of electric motors and batteries, or without power supplies that are able to provide the electricity needed to recharge millions of electric batteries daily, the electric car revolution will run up against insoluble problems. Experts also predict that changing social attitudes and raising environmental awareness will lead to a reduction in private vehicle use. This prediction is likely to be right, though not necessarily for those reasons alone. And will other issues throw a spanner in the works? For example, any shortage of battery recharging facilities will discourage people from buying electric vehicles, leading to a fall in the number of electric vehicles on the roads. So will more countries be able to complete the electric vehicle revolution? For the time being, technology will come up with the answers, as it often has in the past. In terms of volume, the electric vehicle revolution has only just got under way. 9. Which of the following countries receives the most official support? A. South Africa. B. Columbia. C. Turkey. D. India. 10. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. Why is the demand for electric vehicles on the rise? B. How can electricity grids help to develop electric vehicles? C. Why is the massive production of electric vehicles impossible? D. What ingredients are needed for manufacturing electric vehicles? 11. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Do something that increases the amount of the private vehicles. B. Do something that prevents the development of electric vehicles. C. Do something that accelerates the development of electric vehicles. D. Do something that raises the awareness of environmental protection. 12. What is the author’s attitude towards the development of electric vehicles? A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Neutral. D. Unclear. We often tend to associate smiling as the result of a positive event or mood. The next stop was the trailer park, where a boy, older than me, got on the bus. But his hands stuffed in jean jacket pockets, he didn’t even bring them out to pay his fare, speaking to the driver so low that I couldn’t hear. Passengers around were frowning. The driver waved at the boy like shooing a fly and then jerked a thumb to indicate he should go and sit down. The boy walked past me, eyes on the untied sneakers, which were a size too big for him. Just then, someone whispered, rough as sandpaper, loud enough to be caught by all our ears. “Trailer park people never have the money.” Another voice, sharp as a needle, responded, “They always expect a free ride.” I glanced around quickly, seeing the hurt boy with his nose bright pink. I had experienced the same feeling about being looked down upon with mean words. So I reached deep in my pocket for the plastic baggies that held the change. The driver glared at me because I was out of my seat while the bus was in motion. I whispered, “For that boy in the back.” The coins fell into the fare box. The machine beeps to say a child’s fare has been paid. The driver stared at me and raised one thick brown eyebrow and the jut of his chin told me to go back to my seat. Two weeks later, I parted with my best friend after enjoying ourselves in the cinema for the whole afternoon. When her mother offered to drive me home, I declined, for it was only a drizzle then. However, it rained heavily soon, and the wind roared to life, letting loose the rain with a will. By the time the bus I waited for slowly pulled up, I dug in my pockets for money, which was surprisingly empty. Only then did I realize I had spent it all in the cinema, forgetting to save some for the bus. 1. I looked at the driver helplessly, at his eyes under his thick, bushy brown eyebrows. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The fare machine beeped, saying the fare for a child had been paid. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力1—5BACCA 6—10BABCA 11—15BCCAB 16—20BCCBA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024~2025学年度第一学期期中考试 高二英语试题 (考试时间:120分钟;总分:150分) 注意事项: 1. 1. After completing the treatment, a person’s depression may be reduced or completely disappear.(幸运的是,还有另一种治疗方法:经颅磁刺激(TMS),即用磁铁刺激大脑的某些区域。 根据第二段“During each forty- minute treatment session, a trained physician places a device on the left side of the person’s head. This device sends out magnetic pulses into the area of the brain that is involved in mood control. 故选A。 根据最后一段“Both groups were first assigned a memory task, then their performances were scored. On average, the older group scored 40 percent. Meanwhile, the younger group did better, achieving an average score of 55 percent. Next, the older adults were treated with TMS for five days in a row. After that, they were allowed to rest for a day before they were given a new memory test. In this case, the average score was better. In fact, it equaled the younger group’s score on the original test, proving that TMS had stimulated the older adults’ brains and improved their memory.(两组人首先被分配了一个记忆任务,然后对他们的表现进行评分。 根据第二段“Fortunately, there is another treatment available: transcranial magnetic stimulation or TMS, which uses magnets to stimulate regions of the brain. B。 B When instant cake mixes hit US shelves in the late 1940s, sales were disappointing. Be Careful with Your Effort 【答案】5. D 6. A 7. C 8. 根据第一段中“His interviews with housewives led him to a surprising conclusion. The mixes made baking too easy. 根据第二段中“Some economists tell us that we should place more value on items that spare us work. As we increasingly consider ourselves as money-rich and time - poor, we should be prepared to spend more of the former to save the latter. But humans and these economists don’t always see eye to eye. 故选A项。 根据第三段中“For most of human history, people believed that the higher up the tree you climbed, the more and better fruit you were likely to find, simply because it was less reachable. “You can make people believe that if effort is invested, the result is of higher quality.” says Norton. He has named this phenomenon the IKEA effect. 通读全文,根据第一段中“The mixes made baking too easy. On Dichter’s recommendation, the next generation of mixes required the addition of a fresh egg. They became very popular and sold like hot cakes. 和最后一段“The IKEA effect suggests that when looking around for last - minute gift inspiration for someone you could get him a box of separate furniture pieces that have to be put together himself. Although he might dislike the confusing instructions, in the long run he will thank you. 故选A项。 C Electric vehicles are now a common sight on the roads of most developed countries. A South Africa. B. Columbia. C. Turkey. D. India. A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Neutral. D. Unclear. D 10. C 11. B 12. 根据第一段中“But the situation in less developed countries is rather different: the only African country that has started using electric vehicles is South Africa, where electric vehicles still account for less than 0.01%. In South America, the situation is better, particularly Columbia which, in 2023, had a third of the continent’s total electric car fleet. In Turkey, the wealthy are investing in imported electric cars, but no electric cars are yet made locally, while in India, the government is promoting the purchase of electric vehicles with the reduction of tax.(但欠发达国家的情况就大不相同了:唯一一个开始使用电动汽车的非洲国家是南非,在那里,电动汽车的比例仍然不到0.01%。 根据第二段“Firstly, the expansion of electric vehicle manufacturing is dependent on poor ability’ of manufacturers to source vastly increased quantities of vital components without which electric vehicles cannot operate. These include silicon chips which have been in short supply since 2021. Secondly, few countries now have electricity grids that are anywhere near being able to cope with the huge increase in demand for electricity that will accompany any rapid growth in electric vehicle ownership. Without adequate supplies of all the crucial ingredients of electric motors and batteries, or without power supplies that are able to provide the electricity needed to recharge millions of electric batteries daily, the electric car revolution will run up against insoluble problems.(首先,电动汽车制造业的扩张依赖于制造商采购大量重要部件的能力差,没有这些部件,电动汽车就无法运行。 根据第三段“For example, any shortage of battery recharging facilities will discourage people from buying electric vehicles(例如,电池充电设施短缺将阻碍人们购买电动车)”可知,后文描述阻碍电动车发展的原因,因此“throw a spanner in the works”意指阻碍电动车发展。 根据文章最后一段“For the time being, technology will come up with the answers, as it often has in the past. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】I looked at the driver helplessly, at his eyes under his thick, bushy brown eyebrows. I swallowed hard, my heart pounding in my chest as I tried to explain the unexpected trouble. With heavy rain, my hair was a wet curtain in my face. Looking at me for few seconds, the driver smiled, signing me to get on the bus quickly. I stared at the face of the driver, only to find that it was the same driver who, two weeks before, witnessed my offer to pay for the boy. The fare machine beeped, saying the fare for a child had been paid. Hearing this, I felt relieved and grateful. The smallest but warmest smile in the world spread on the driver’s face. A sense of amazement dominated my heart, for I realized that my simple act of kindness was returned in the least expected manner. From now on, I’m always going to carry two fares worth of money in my pocket. It’s a reminder that little kindness can go a long way in making a better world. 词汇激活 行为类 ①盯着:stared at/ gazed at ②.意识到:realized /was aware of ③.
