Suddenly their eyes happened to fall upon Alice, as she stood watching them. “Would you tell me, please,” said Alice, a little timidly, “why you are painting those roses?”
Five and Seven said nothing, but looked at Two. Two began, in a low voice, “Why, the fact is, you see, Miss, this here should have been a red rose-tree, and we put a white one in by mistake; and, if the Queen was to find it out, we should all have our heads cut off, you know. So you see, Miss, we’re doing our best, before she comes, to—” At this moment, Five, who had been anxiously looking across the garden, called out, “The Queen! The Queen!” and the three gardeners immediately threw themselves flat upon their faces. There was a sound of many footsteps and Alice looked round, eager to see the Queen. Accidents often happen in schools around the world. For this reason, the ICRC (红十字国际委员会) began its education program in 2017. First aid training in schools around the world is one of its plans.
Kalida is a 16-year-old student who wants to become a doctor. She lives in Aghdam in Azerbaijan (阿塞拜疆). She took part in ICRC’s first aid training in 2021. One important lesson she learned was that in accidents everyone must take care of themselves first before helping others.
Since attending the training, Kalida has already helped her friend who hurt his hand with broken glass. She even taught some students and her cousins some of the skills. “The training is important,” Kalida said. “The teachers and students in our school used to know little about first aid. Now we can carry out some of the skills correctly in different situations.”
Marisela teaches at a school in Venezuela (委内瑞拉). The most important thing Marisela learned from the first aid training was to stay calm in order to make her safe at the moment. The training has made her a strong and confident person and an excellent first aider. She and other teachers have already treated small injuries. Besides, they have taught their students some first aid skills.

Do you ever want to talk to the writer after reading a book they write? At Boone Middle School in Florida, US, all eighth-graders had a video talk with US writer S. L. Rottman, who wrote 10 books. Before the talk, they read the writer’s book Hero in their reading class.
The book is about a 15-year-old boy named Sean. The law makes him work on a horse farm. But the book’s ending is not clear. Will Sean just do what he has to do, or will he make some changes? The students wanted to know what happened to Sean and asked Rottman about it. The answer they received was that “it’s good for you guys to think of your own ending.”
Caitlynne Sheppard was happy with the answer. “She gave us an ending in the book and told us her alternative (供选择的) ending, but it still left us trying to think what might happen.”
In fact, the video talk was just part of the school’s yearly reading project. Students not only had to finish reading the book Hero, but also needed to have a talk with the “heroes” around them and make reports. For example, Emily Cain talked with a policeman. “Nobody notices that policemen might not be able to go home that day, or that they have to put their life in danger to help other people,” she said.
1.Before talking with the writer, what did the students read?
2.What is not clear in the book?
3.Who else did the reading project ask the students to talk with?

Many people believe sharks (鲨鱼) are one of the most dangerous animals in the world. But according to a report, humans bring a far greater danger to sharks than they do to us. Shark attacks (攻击) do happen, however they are not very often. On the other hand, every hour, about 11,000 sharks are killed by humans. It is time that we should take action to stop many kinds of sharks from dying out.
Why should we save sharks? Because killing sharks is a problem for the whole world. Sharks are on the top of food chain. They eat other species (物种), but few species eat them. As sharks die off, the number of other species will increase. This, in turn, means the food that other species eat will become less. So how can you help save sharks?
Don’t use shark products (产品). Pet foods, energy drinks, leather products can be made from shark parts. And shark meat is sold around the world. Most sharks killed worldwide are hunted for their fins (鳍), which are used to make shark fin soup. The process is unfriendly and cruel. Fishermen often cut the shark’s fins off and then drop the shark back into the water, still alive. Sharks breathe by swimming. So if a shark can’t swim with its fin, it will die.
If you eat seafood, make sure the food you eat comes from fisheries (渔场) that care for the sea. Many organizations try to protect sharks. They give us advice on how to keep them alive.
No buying, no killing! Maybe that is the best way to save sharks.
1.How many sharks are killed per hour?
2.What will happen, if sharks die off?
3.Can sharks live without fins? Why?
4.What do the organizations do to protect sharks?
5.What can we do to protect sharks?
【答案】1.About 11,000 (sharks are killed). 2.The number of other species will increase. /The food that other species eat will become less. 3.No. (Because) If a shark/sharks can’t swim with fins, it/they will die. 4.They give us advice on how to keep them alive. 5.We can stop people buying products from sharks./We can support organizations to keep on protecting sharks.

Two weeks after getting out of the caves, the judge told Tom, “Nobody will get lost in those caves again. I’ve closed the caves with big metal doors and three locks.”
Tom turned as white as a piece of paper. “Oh, Judge, Indian Joe’s in the caves!” As a result, Indian Joe lay dead on the floor. Tom finally felt safe.
The next day Tom and Huck talked about the money they had seen. Huck said someone else must have taken it from Indian Joe’s room in the tavern.
“Huck, I bet the money’s in the caves! Will you go there with me and get it out?”
“I will if we get in and don’t get lost.”
“That’s no problem. Just through the entrance that only I know about, we can get into the caves.”
So boys started their treasure hunt adventure. They went down the river, entered the secret hole and crawled to the far end of the tunnel. They tied their string to a rock and moved on. They soon got to the place where Tom saw Indian Joe that night. The boys went carefully over to the place. They found a small bed of blankets by a large rock but there was no money-box.
“Look, Huck. There’re footprints and some candle wax on this side of the rock, but not on the other sides. I’m sure the money is under the rock. I’m going to dig.”
Tom took out his knife, started digging and hit wood. He lifted the piece of wood and found a large hole. So they climbed inside it and found the treasure box, about $12,000, which were shared by them both.
Now Widow Douglas gave Huck a home though Huck wasn’t used to the comfortable but regular life. However, to be a member of Tom Sawyer’s Gang, Huck decided to try the new life again.

He was the only grey cub (幼崽) the she-wolf had. The other cubs had red in their hair. He was grey like his father. He was also the strongest cub.
There were living things and non-living things in the forest. He learned that most living things ran away from him. By accident, he ate some baby birds. The taste was good. They were the first meat he found for himself.
He met an animal about his own size. It was a weasel, a rat-like animal. It ran at him and bit him. He tried to shake the weasel off, but it held on, soon he was nearly dead. The she-wolf arrived just in time and killed it and ate it. She bent down and took care of her cub. He followed her back to the cave. When he felt strong again, he left the cave and went into the forest. He knew the forest could be dangerous. A large bird nearly killed him. It came out of the sky and caught a squirrel near him. He knew he must watch out for it.
He began hunting for his own food, but he was not good at hunting yet. He still needed food from his mother. One day, she brought him a lynx kitten. He was eating it when he heard a great noise from the mouth of the cave. The kitten’s mother followed the she-wolf to the cave. The she-wolf and the she-lynx started to fight. They would fight to the death. The cub ran forward. He bit one of the lynx’s legs. It was not a big bite, but it was enough to give the she-wolf the chance she needed. Soon the lynx was dead, but the she-wolf was badly hurt. For a week, she did not move. The grey cub had to find food for both of them.
Without his mother to take care of him, he learned what life was about. It was about meat. Without meat there was no life. Animals had to eat other animals to survive. The law was: EAT OR BE EATEN. It was a hard life.

A large rose-tree stood near the entrance of the garden; the roses growing on it were white, but there were three gardeners at it, busily painting them red.
First came ten soldiers carrying clubs, with their hands and feet at the corners: next the ten courtiers; these were decorated all over with diamonds. After these came the royal children; there were ten of them, all decorated with hearts. Next came the guests, mostly Kings and Queens, and among them Alice recognized the White Rabbit. Then followed the Knave of Hearts, carrying the King’s crown on a crimson velvet cushion; and last of all this grand procession came THE KING AND THE QUEEN OF HEARTS. When the procession (队伍) came opposite to Alice, they all stopped and looked at her, and the Queen said seriously, “Who is this?” She said it to the Knave of Hearts, who only bowed and smiled in reply. “My name is Alice, so please Your Majesty,” said Alice very politely, but she added to herself, “Why, they’re only a pack of cards, after all!”

2.What were the gardeners doing?
3.Who came last of all this grand procession?

Thanks to the ICRC’s first aid training, many students and teachers, like Kalida and Marisela, have become professional first aiders. While bringing these skills back to their families and communities, they will always carry the feeling of safety, confidence and resilience (韧性) within themselves.
1.Why did the ICRC begin its education program around the world?
2.When did Kalida take part in ICRC’s first aid training?
3.Who did Kalida teach after the training?
4.What was the most important thing Marisela learned from the training?
5.What do you think of the training and why?

Most of you may think of clams (河蚌) as part of a big meal. But these little things can do an important job: testing the cleanness of water, including people’s drinking water.
The main water station in Warsaw, Poland, offers water to millions of people there. It uses eight clams to help test the water every day, reported The Economist.
Clams are very sensitive (able to find very small changes quickly) to water pollution. If the water is not clean enough, the clams will close their shells (壳). People in the water station connect (连接) their shells to a computer system (系统). When four or more clams close their shells at the same time, the workers can get a tip from the computer quickly.
To make sure the clams are always sensitive to the environment, the workers choose some new ones to work for them every three months. “This works well and it helps protect people’s drinking water,” the water station said.
1.What important job can clams do according to the passage?
2.How many clams do the water station in Warsaw use every day?
3.What will the clams do if the water is dirty?
4.How often do the workers choose new clams to work for them?

The little wolf, White Fang, made an enemy of the dog, Lip-Lip. Lip-Lip attacked him whenever he could. He was bigger and stronger than White Fang and always won their fights. White Fang knew that he could not win a fight against Lip-Lip. He thought that he had to do something else to teach the dog a lesson.
One day, he was playing at a river bank when he saw Lip-Lip come. He suddenly got a good idea. He pretended (假装) to be hurt and unable to run fast. He lifted White Fang out of the water. White Fang tried to get away from the man, but the man hit him and threw him into the boat.

(23-24八年级上·江苏盐城·期末)What should you do if a big fire happens at home? There is no much time to think, people need to act quickly. The following rules will be helpful:
Shout out
If you smell smoke or see fire, shout out “fire”! Shout as loudly as you can to wake people up.
Call 119
Never try to put out a fire by yourself, even if it is a very small one! Get help from your parents or call 119.
Keep down close to the floor
If there is a lot of smoke in your room, keep down close to the floor. There is less smoke down there. It is easier to breathe (呼吸) and see where you are going. Take a wet towel to protect yourself from the fire and smoke.
Check the door
Check the door before you open it. Touch it with the back of your hand. If the door is cool, open it carefully. If the door is hot, do not open it.
Get out
If you can, get out of your home as quickly as you can. Don’t stop to pick up anything. A fire can become very big in a few seconds!
Don’t use the lift
Never use the lift during a fire. Always use the stairs (楼梯). A lift may stop at a floor where the fire is burning. It may also go wrong and keep you inside.

Jan is going to make a time capsule for her school project. A time capsule is a box with something inside buried (埋) in the ground for someone to find in the future.
First of all, Jan found an old biscuit box to protect the things inside.
Then, Jan has to put something special inside the box. The first thing is today’s newspaper. What else can Jan put inside the biscuit tin? She looks around her room. Her collection of Twilight books and DVDs? No, she wants to keep them. How about a memory stick? She can put all her photos on the memory stick. What a great idea! The people in the future can see all her pictures. So Jan copies her photo collection onto the memory stick.
What other things? There is her Pirates of the Caribbean collection. Why not? She is not interested in Pirates since she discovered Bella and Twilight.
There is the postcard from aunt Suzie. She sent it to Jan’s mother in Berlin in 1989. OK.
And the packet of sweets she bought yesterday.
And the map of the town she printed from the Internet.
And the Kiwi key ring dad is always telling her to use.
The Mika CD from her birthday, the Earth Hour wristband, and a copy of TM: Teen Magazine.
The last thing: a letter, to the person in the future.
Perfect. She puts them all into the box.
Finally, Jan needs to bury her time capsule. She makes a hole in the ground beside the apple tree and puts the box inside. Then she carefully covers the hole and looks around her to check that no one is watching her. The location of the time capsule is a secret.

Yeshe Dolkar still remembers the moment she saw snow leopards at Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve a year ago. On that cold snowy day, the 15-year-old Yeshe Dolkar living in Nangqen County, Qinghai was heading down a mountaintop with her family. Suddenly, they saw two snow leopards near the headwaters of the Lancang River. “They have blue-green eyes and long tails. The fur is gray-white with black spots all over the body. “They look so cool!” said Yeshe Dolkar.
Since the mid-20th century, the area of snow, grasslands and lakes in Sanjiangyuan has become smaller because of climate change and human activities. Many wild animals living in the area are in danger of extinction (灭绝).
On Jan 24, 2003, China set up Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve to better protect the area and the wildlife there.
Last year was the 20th anniversary of the setup of the reserve. In these years, the population (种群) of wild animals has been rising. More than 70,000 Tibetan antelopes now live there. And more than 1,000 snow leopards can be found in the area.
Local people have improved (提高) their understanding about environmental protection and have tried hard to look after the environment in Sanjiangyuan over the years. They used to carry food with them in plastic bags and left the bags behind. But now things have changed. According to Palden Wangchuk, a 22-year-old young man, local people are regularly called on to pick up waste (废物) on the grasslands. “People would also take their food waste down the mountains. The grasslands have put on a new look,” he said.

2.When did China set up Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve?
3.How does the writer show the change of the population of wild animals?
4.What are local people called on to do on the grasslands?

Gather together some good friends and take a walk through the streets. This is what many young people in China enjoy doing when they visit a new city. City-walk is becoming more and more popular.
City-walk is a special guided trip for a small group of people, or just a relaxing (令人放松的) walk for one or two to explore (探索) cities. City-walk is not about famous places of interest. It leads travellers to walk through the local markets, old streets and city centers in a relaxing way.
Young people are interested in City-walk. They are always busy with study or work. and don’t have much time to explore the local city. However, the growing trend (趋势) of City-walk shows their changing idea towards life—they want a more relaxing and slower lifestyle. Besides, people can make some friends in walking. That’s why young people enjoy City-walk.
When visiting a new city, travellers join the group of City-walk so that they can experience local life and culture. For example, City-walk tours in Nanjing may lead travellers to the Qinhuai River or old neighbourhoods like Xi’nan Li. In these places, travellers can feel the local lives, both in the past and now.

Rain Water is one of the 24 solar terms which stands for the increase (增加) in rainfall and rise in temperature. With its arrival, the river water melts, wild geese fly from south to north, and trees and grass turn green again.
Here are several things you may not know but can make you know about Rain Water better. Let me introduce them to you.

A returning cold in the late spring often happens during Rain Water. The fast increase in air humidity (湿度) can result in lower temperature and wet weather. Remember not to take off your coats so early in this period.
Visit to in-laws (姻亲)

They stand for good health and long life. Another traditional gift is a pot of cooked pig’s knuckles (蹄). The son-in-law expresses his thankfulness this way.

(23-24八年级上·江苏盐城·期末)Jim is on holiday in Australia. There are bushfires in the area where he is staying. He is telling his friend Mark about the fires.
Mark: We saw the news about the bushfires. Are they close to you?
Jim: Yes. They are very close. The weather is hot and windy. The conditions are ideal for bushfires and once they get started they spread quickly. Yesterday the temperatures hit 44°C and there were reports of over 50 fires in the area. It will take days to put them out.
Mark: Have you seen any fires?
Jim: Yes, I have. I’m staying with my uncle Ted. He’s a volunteer firefighter. He says the fires have killed a lot of animals, but no people. He says that the safest thing is to stay inside unless your house catches fire!
Mark: Is it safe where you are?
Jim: We’re fine. We listen to the radio to keep up to date with the latest news. So we know if a fire is coming our way. One got very close yesterday. Three houses nearby caught fire. Luckily, the families put the fires out before they did too much damage.
Mark: Are you worried? Do you think you will need to move to a safer place?
Jim: Bushfires are normal in Australia. They are a fact of life here. It’s a bit scary, but I am sure I’ll be fine.
