Montrose Basin
This huge tidal (受潮汐影响的) basin, which sits right next to the town of Montrose in Angus, is a hugely important site for migratory birds (候鸟). The sandy beach, which is almost completely exposed at low tide, is a very rich feeding ground, attracting a wide variety of bird species to the area. The visitor centre at the basin has telescopes to help you spot some of the wildlife that visits the area, including ducks, geese, kingfishers, and otters.
Staffa
The island, which can be reached by a number of boat tours, is a superb spot to grab a photo of puffins during their breeding season. Puffins are by no means the only wildlife to keep an eye out for on any trip to the island. As well as other birds, the nearby sea is also home to dolphins, seals, minke whales and even basking sharks at certain times of the year.
Burghead
The coastal cliffs (悬崖) of Burghead in Moray are a popular location for a bit of whale spotting. Pilot whales, minke, orca and even the odd humpback can be seen in the waters of the Moray Firth if you are lucky. The cliffs near John O’ Groats in Caithness are another popular spot too.
Highland Wildlife Park
Located near Kingussie in the Cairngorms National Park, the Highland Wildlife Park may be a large open-air zoo, but it has a wide range of animals, including iconic Highland species like the wildcat, which you will have great difficulty spotting in the wild, the red squirrel and the wolf. The park is also home to a number of more foreign species, from polar bears and tigers to snow leopards and wolverines.
1. What is the main attraction of Montrose Basin?
A. Feeding the wild birds. B. Taking pictures of tides.
C. Observing migratory birds. D. Enjoying the sandy beach.
2. Which place offers you an opportunity to see non-native animals?
A. Montrose Basin. B. Staffa.
C. Burghead. D. Highland Wildlife Park.
3. What do the four places have in common?
A. They are of similar historical value. B. They provide various facilities for tourists.
C. They attract a variety of seabirds to breed there. D. They offer opportunities for wildlife observation.

Anand Malligavad, known as the “Lake Man of India”, is very motivating since he has transformed many places and environments in India by conserving them. It is a story of passion, determination, and the importance of personal actions in making a difference.
Anand's adventure began at his birthplace of Sirsi, Karnataka, where he saw how pollution and carelessness had led to damage to some nearby ponds. Anand decided to save the dry lakes in his region with perseverance and a sense of duty to which he felt deeply attached.
Anand united those who were willing to participate in the volunteer work, and came up with means through which they could remove people’s trash and pollutant wastes along the lake.
The news about Anand's activities spread wide, which inspired several people including students, the locals and some high-ranking officials to join his team. Anand's method was comprehensive in that he combined bottom-up activism with inductive (归纳的) reasoning. To fill up aquifers (含水层) that had run dry, he suggested methods of rainwater harvesting. In order to check for any additional sources of pollution at them, he started carrying out sewage (污物) treatment programs at these water bodies.
Multiple lakes in the Sirsi region were brought back to life by Anand through his firm dedication and cooperative work, hence changing them into lively ecological systems. These transformed lakes not only provided pure drinking water and irrigation water, but also served as recreation centers and tourist attractions, thereby contributing positively to the economy of the area.
Anand didn't stop there. He went on to broaden his conservation activities motivating Indian society to guard the environment in the same way. He has been honored nationally for his accomplishments and has become an influential person, speaking at conferences and interacting with decision-makers about how they can ensure they are acting in a sustainable way while still advocating for environmental protection.

Le’ Ann Solmonson, a professional counselor (顾问) in Nacogdoches, Texas , has seen many families fall into a pattern as children reach adolescence: The youth want more autonomy (自主权) and begin to push against their parents’ rules. In response, the parents tighten their control or give punishment, only to have the adolescent push back harder and break more rules, leading to more conflicts.
“Adolescents’ goal is to figure out’ Who am I? Where do I fit in?’ and they begin the separation from their parents. Some of that development leads the adolescent to think differently than their parents,” says Solmonson. “These are natural things that can fuel disagreements.”
In counseling, Solmonson often asks a teen and his or her parents to name a small conflict they struggle with. She invites the teen to explain his or her perspective (观点) about the disagreement. Then, she encourages the parents to give their perspective and repeat what their child said. Usually, the parents immediately jump to why the teen’s opinion is wrong. If this happens, Solmonson will remind them that she wants to hear what they think their child's perspective is, not whether it’s right or wrong. She also gives the adolescent the same assignment. The aim, she explains, is to develop understanding between them.
Parents often need to work on how they respond to their teens when what they see as a mistake occurs. Instead of responding in anger, she coaches parents to use supportive statements like “That must have been so stressful. How can we prevent that from happening again?”
Moreover, Solmonson often stresses to parents that if they want respect during disagreements from their child, they’ll need to show it themselves. If a teen answers disrespectfully, Solmonson coaches parents to respond by saying, “I’m going to give you another chance. Do you need a minute to think about how to say that?”
8. For Solmonson, what’s the cause of parent-adolescent conflicts?
A Parental strictness. B. Too frequent arguments.
C. Many stressful situations. D. Adolescent development.
9. What is the key to making teens and their parents understand each other better?
A. Giving each other strict rules to follow. B. Reducing their worries about conflicts.
C. Making them listen to each other’s viewpoints. D. Allowing them to point out each other’s mistakes.
10. How should parents handle disrespectful responses from their teens?
A. By respecting their teens first. B. By telling their teens to stop talking.
C. By understanding their teens’ moods. D. By analyzing their teens’ responses wisely.
11. What does Solmonson usually focus on in counseling?
A. Good qualities developing. B. Negative emotions removing.
C. Communication skills building. D. Stress and conflict managing.

Many studies have shown a rising trend for greater body and weight dissatisfaction among the youth who are heavy or frequent users of social media. However, these studies are largely correlational (相关性的) rather than causal in nature. Simply put, they did not determine if frequent use of social media created poorer body image among the users, or whether those suffering from body image concerns spent more time on social media. This lack of clarity led my students and me to start a study to better understand the causal effects of social media on body image and mental health.
We recruited (招募) a group of Canadian youths aged 17-24 years who were using social media for more than two hours per day and also experiencing higher levels of emotional problems. We tracked their social media use for one week by having them send daily screenshots (屏幕截图) of their usage. These youth spent about two and a half hours per day on social media. During this same period, we also assessed their body image and other mental health measures.
Participants were then divided into two groups. The intervention group reduced their daily social media use to one hour per day. The control group continued to have unlimited use of social media. After the three-week intervention period ended, those who reduced daily social media use reported significantly greater improvements in appearance satisfaction and weight satisfaction compared to those who had not reduced their social media use.
The results of this study suggest that reducing social media use to more moderate levels – about one hour per day-is a good place to start. Replacing social media use with more mental health- improving activities such as physical activity, time in nature, pursuing hobbies, and spending quality time with friends and family can bring even greater mental benefits.
12. What is the aim of the study conducted by the author?
A. To explore how often youths use social media.
B. To determine the overall effects of social media on mental health.
C. To measure the level of body dissatisfaction among social media users.
D. To study whether frequent social media use brings body image dissatisfaction.
13. What is the function of screenshots in the study?
A. Showing the time spent on social media. B. Showing the social media platforms used.
C. Showing the emotional responses to social media. D. Showing the types of social media content viewed.
14. What is the reported result from the intervention group?
A. More attention on physical health. B. Lower appearance satisfaction.
C. More concern about emotional problems. D. Higher level of self-satisfaction.
15. What does the author think of social media use according to the last paragraph?
A. It should be limited for mental health. B. It has no impact on mental well-being.
C. It should be forbidden for physical health. D. It is a common cause of family conflict.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. D 15. A

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“We tracked their social media use for one week by having them send daily screenshots (屏幕截图) of their usage. These youth spent about two and a half hours per day on social media.(我们通过让他们每天发送使用社交媒体的截图来跟踪他们一周的社交媒体使用情况。这些年轻人每天花在社交媒体上的时间约为两个半小时)”可知,屏幕截图在研究中的作用显示花在社交媒体上的时间。故选A项。

Music is something I could never live without. Without music, I was shy, very quiet and the type of person that would only talk when asked to. As a little kid, I would hear my parents sing me to sleep and I loved to sing when I grew up. Music allowed me to express myself. It made me happy. There was nothing that could keep me away from my passion, until high school.
Every ninth grader who wanted to be in the show choir (歌舞合唱团) (dancing and singing) during high school could audition (试镜) for the program. On the day the audition was held, I waited with the other students. We were called in one by one.
It was my turn to enter the room. I walked in. I was a little nervous, and my throat was dry. The room was small with a piano in the middle of it. The singing audition went like this, introduction, a song of our choice and matching a note (调) the director played on the piano.
Before I knew it, the audition was over. I hit every note in the song. I took a breath of relief. A week later, there was a dance audition for the show choir. I felt that I had done an amazing job, changing my facial expressions to match the turns. Weeks passed and the list of who had made it into the show choir was posted.
“Have you seen the list? I got in!” one of my friends said.
“No,” I replied looking at the web page for the results. I moved the page down and found my name.
“Angelica H. — alternate (替补)”
An alternate? Was my audition that bad? My movements were graceful. Maybe it was the singing. Did I not hit the right notes? I thought to myself. After I saw this, my confidence disappeared. I had no intention of joining the show choir. I was torn from something that I thought made me different from others.
A year passed, I realized that it was not smart of me to give up on what I loved.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

I realized not getting into the program did not mean that I had to give up all hope.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I was at a restaurant with my family, which had a karaoke machine. My parents encouraged me to go up and sing. I rejected their proposal. At their repeated request, I got enough courage to go up finally. It took me back to the moment when I was auditioning for the show choir in the ninth grade. I chose a song and began to sweat. I started off my song and gained more confidence as I continued. While I hit the high notes the people eating there cheered for me. I determined to sing from that day on.
I realized not getting into the program did not mean that I had to give up all hope. I still loved to sing. I still had that passion. The lesson I learned was if you are turned down or do not get the result you want, and it is something you’re in love with, don’t give up. I never did try out for any show choirs again but I knew I had taken back my passion. For the future I know that I won’t always get the result I want but I will continue to work just as hard.

He went on to broaden his conservation activities, motivating Indian society to guard the environment in the same way. He has been honored nationally for his accomplishments and has become an influential person, speaking at conferences and interacting with decision-makers about how they can ensure they are acting in a sustainable way while still advocating for environmental protection.
4. What inspired Anand to transform the lakes?
A. The harm to local water bodies. B. The development of local tourism.
C. The beautiful views of local lakes. D. The local government’s encouragement.
5. How did Anand restore the lakes?
A. By planting more trees. B. By collecting rainwater.
C. By introducing new species. D. By using chemical treatments.
6. How did Anand’s work influence the local region?
A. It boosted the local economy. B. It promoted the local education.
C. It led to an increase in agricultural output. D. It attracted a lot of government investment.
7. Which of the following can best describe Anand?
A. Patient. B. Generous. C. Dedicated. D. Humble.

A. Parental strictness.
D

A year passed I realized that it was not smart of me to give up on what I loved.
