(24-25九年级上·江苏无锡·期中)It was a bright, sunny day in 1883. Little Albert Einstein stayed at home because he was ill.
“How are you, my boy?” his father came in. “I have something for you to play with!” In his hand was a round, shiny thing. It looked a bit like a pocket watch, but its face was marked with the letters N, S, E, and W, and it only had one big hand.
“This is called ‘compass’,” his father said. “No matter which way you turn it, the needle (针) always points north! Travellers use it to work out where they are in a new place!”
Albert took the little device from his father and looked at it in wonder. “How does it work?” he asked finally. “Ah, it uses something called ‘magnetism’ (磁性)!” his father told him with a smile. “The needle is a magnet—and so is the Earth. That is why the needle always wants to point north—because of the magnetic field around the Earth!”
Albert felt so ▲ . It was amazing to think that the needle in his compass was being influenced by something that he couldn’t see or touch ... something that was everywhere! Could it be that there were other hidden forces (力) at work in the universe (宇宙)? And if there were, what could they be?
Albert soon got better. But he was still crazy about the compass and the forces that influenced it. He did a lot of tests and tried to find the rules of the universe.
Albert’s family helped him. His uncle Jakob taught the boy Maths. Every Thursday, Albert’s family had a learned visitor called Max. Whenever Max came, Albert would keep on asking him questions about science.
One day, Max brought Albert a series of books called People’s Books on Natural Science. The boy threw himself in these books. The more he read about the universe, the more it made sense!
The most amazing thing that Albert learned about was the speed of light. “Scientists say that nothing can go faster. I bet that understanding the speed of light is very important if we want to know more about the universe. I might study that when I grow up!” he told his sister Maja one day.
Albert thought a lot about magnetism, gravity (重力) and light. He wondered whether there were any ways of understanding how they all connected to each other. To find it out, he began reading more books about how everything worked. That little compass had started him on a journey of discovery—and who knew what he would find out along the way!

Emperor Taizong of Tang (January 23, 599—July 10, 649), personal name Li Shimin, was the second emperor of the Tang Dynasty of China, ruling from 626 to 649. As he encouraged his father, Li Yuan (later Emperor Gaozu) to rise against Sui Dynasty rule at Taiyuan in 617 and subsequently defeated several of his most important rivals, he was ceremonially regarded as a cofounder of the dynasty along with Emperor Gaozu.
He is typically considered one of the greatest, if not the greatest, emperor in all of Chinese history. Throughout the rest of Chinese history, Emperor Taizong’s reign was regarded as the exemplary model against which all other emperors were measured, and his “Reign of Zhen Guan” (贞观之治) was considered a golden age of Chinese history and required study for future crown princes. During his reign, Tang China flourished economically and militarily. For more than a century after his death, Tang China enjoyed peace and prosperity.
In 630, Emperor Taizong sent his general Li Jing against Eastern Tujue—to which Tang had once submitted—defeating and capturing its Jiali Khan Ashina Duobi and destroying Eastern Tujue power. This made Tang the dominant power in East and Central Asia, and Emperor Taizong subsequently took the title of Tian Kehan (“Heavenly Khan”).
Emperor Taizong was, in opposition to nobility of the time, a frank rationalist, openly laughing of superstitions and heaven's claimed signs, and modifying important rites in order to ease agricultural labour. The modern Chinese historian Bo Yang opined that Emperor Taizong achieved greatness by accepting criticism that others would find difficult to accept and trying hard not to abuse his absolute power (using Emperor Yang of Sui as a negative example), as well as employing capable chancellors Fang Xuanling, Du Ruhui, and Wei Zheng. Emperor Taizong’s wife Empress Zhangsun served as a capable assistant to him as well.

Stephen didn’t mind being thought of as different, and he soon made friends with some boys who were also curious about the world!
He got them to play huge and complex board games (复杂的桌游) that he made up.
“In this one, you run factories and make money by selling your products!” he told them.
His friends were a bit confused. “That sounds very difficult!” said one.“How long does it take to play, then?”
Stephen answered, “Oh, maybe three or four days.”
His friends laughed. “It's like you are trying to create your own universe (宇宙) in this game!”
“That’s not a bad idea. I’d like to do that!” replied Stephen.

So, Stephen and his friends came up with a plan: they would build their own computer! The kids spent a few weeks building the machine and setting it up.
When it was finished, they gave it a name: LUCE. They showed it in class, and the other kids were very surprised!
By now, Stephen was 16, and it was time for him to decide what he wanted to do in his life.
“You’ve got pretty good marks!” his dad said.“Would you like to go to Oxford University and study medicine, like I did?”
Stephen grimaced (扮鬼脸). He didn’t like the idea of cutting people open.

(24-25九年级上·江苏南通·期中)If Confucius was still alive today and could celebrate his September 28th birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing idea. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese study programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy (哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks (缺点) of Westerners’ philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.
So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.
Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.
As for the old thinker, even if few can remember his birthday, he will not be forgotten by people in the West.

A.By telling a story. B.By showing facts.
C.By giving an example. D.By imagining a picture.
2.What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards spreading Chinese culture to the world?

B.Businessmen in the USA prefer Chinese customers to Confucius.
C.People in the Western countries never forget Confucius’ birthday.

We all know that there are a great number of different plants in the world. But how many kinds of plants are there exactly in the world? Lucy Braun wondered that as a child. She showed a great interest in plants when she was just a little child. She often had energetic walks with her family through the nearby woods. Some plants and wildflowers seemed to shout at her with their wild colors. Others hid behind rocks.
Lucy looked at the shapes of different leaves while she was walking in the woods. She kept a record of what she saw. She also learnt to draw what she saw so that she could compare all kinds of plants. Later. Lucy grew more and more interested in botany, the study of plants.
Branching Out
While she was at university, Lucy took classes in geology, or the study of rocks and minerals. Her work with geologists changed how she looked at the natural world. She continued her studies in botany as well. Lucy also took classes in ecology (生态学). She believed that plant life in some areas was able to move to other places over time.
In Full Bloom
In 1917, Lucy began to teach botany at a university. She lived in a house near the woods, Lucy collected plants from all around the country. She took many photos of them, too.

A.Li Shimin is Li Yuan’s Father. B.The Tujue defeated Li Jing in 630.
C.Wei Zheng helped Li Shimin a lot. D.Zhangsun was Li Shimin’s sister.

Dunhuang was one of the most important stops along the ancient Silk Road. It is famous for the Mogao Grottoes which were listed as a world cultural heritage by UNESCO in 1987.
Many people, including archaeologists (考古学家) and researchers, work hard to take care of the Mogao Grottoes and learn more about them. Fan Jinshi is one of them. People call her the “Daughter of Dunhuang”.
Fan Jinshi was born in Beijing in 1938. Her father was a graduate of Tsinghua University and had a strong interest in Chinese classical art and culture. So Fan had great love for Chinese culture when she was young. She studied in the archaeology department in Peking University from 1958 to 1963. Then she started working at Dunhuang Academy and has worked there ever since.
Fan spends her lifetime not only saving the invaluable treasures in Dunhuang but also introducing them to the world. Furthermore, after a 30-year period of hard work, Fan and her team have made a digital preservation system (数字保护系统)—“Digital Dunhuang”—including digital photo shooting, color correction, photo gallery and more. This may be one of the only effective methods to preserve the Mogao Grottoes. Until recently, the resource of “Digital Dunhuang” has enjoyed more than seven million visits from around the world on the Internet. In 2018, Fan earned the title of “Reform Pioneer over the 70-year history of New China” for her contributions to cultural preservation.
On May 4, 2023, Fan Jinshi returned to Peking University and brought back 10 million RMB donations to set up the Fan Jinshi Education Fund (基金会) to support the research of Dunhuang Studies. “Money should be spent in the right way. Wang trained very hard for many years to become an astronaut. The hardest part was desert (沙漠) training. Wearing a spacesuit and carrying heavy equipment, she walked several kilometers through the hot and sandy desert. “Sometimes it was so windy and dusty,” she says, “that we couldn’t see each other even though we were just a few meters away.”
Wang loves her job. She remembers watching the first Chinese astronaut go into space. “I was so proud and also very excited. But as I watched it, it came to my mind: we have male pilots (飞行员) and female pilots. And then a male astronaut. When will there be a female astronaut? And today, it’s me becoming one of the first few.”

Wang Zhenyi (王贞仪,1768-1797) was born and grew up in what is now the city of Nanjing, China. At the time, girls were prevented from getting a formal education and were expected to be housewives. However, her father and grandfather encouraged her to read the books in their libraries and educate herself. She was interested in reading works on astronomy (天文) geography, mathematics, medicine, as well as poetry. At 18, she decided to study astronomy and math and write poetry.
In the late 18th century, stars and outer space were often viewed as supernatural matters.
Many people at the time often looked to the sky for signs of what the future held. They believed that events such as eclipses (日食或月食) were the result of gods displaying their anger or displeasure. Wang, however, didn’t believe in superstition (迷信观念). She believed in fact and observation. She began to learn the basics of astronomy and share what she found in clear, simple ways.
With no access to a lab, Wang did experiments at home. In one, she used a round table as the Earth, a lamp as the Sun, and a mirror as the moon to understand their moving and reveal what was happening in a lunar eclipse and a solar eclipse. Wang showed that the Moon can block our view of the Sun, creating a solar eclipse, and the Earth can block sunlight from reaching the Moon, creating a lunar eclipse.
Wang felt that it was unjust that women were stopped from getting education. In her poetry collection, she often tried to solved inequalities in society and championed the rights of women. In one poem, she wrote, “It’s made to believe, Women are the same as Men;/ Are you not convinced (确信的), / Daughters can also be heroic?

(23-24九年级上·江苏无锡·期中)Little Stephen Hawking liked discovering things for himself. He loved learning new knowledge, but he found school boring and didn’t try very hard. He never finished his homework, either. Most of the other kids thought he was strange!
But it was difficult to make a model of the universe that could work in a board game. He needed a machine that could help him to work out the problem.
In a newspaper, Stephen read about a new kind of machine called “computer”.
“With one of those, I could work out all kinds of things about the universe and discover its secrets!” he thought.
At that time, computers were very big and very expensive. There was no way a schoolboy could afford one, even if he saved up all his pocket money.

Colour photography was still new then. Because of that, people enjoyed her lessons and photos very much. The ▲ of Labour (劳动)
