Shadow play, known as “Ying zi xi” in Chinese, is a kind of ancient shadow art. It has a history of about 2,000 in China, India and Southeast Asia. The moving shadows on a screen are used to tell history and folk stories. And hand shadow is one of the simplest ways to make shadow play. With a bit of practise, most people can change the shape of hands to make animals, like dogs and birds on the wall.
Today, shadow art has developed into one more creative style. In the spring of 2016, Vincent Bal, turned the shadows into a clever art form—shadow drawing. He named this special drawing “Shadowology”. In the Shadowology, a little drawing is added into the shadows of everyday things to create wonderful pictures.
Like most good things in life, Shadowology came by accident. One day, during a break from work, Bal noticed that the shadow of his teacup looked like a little elephant. He drew eyes, legs and a smile for the shadow, and took a photo of that. After sharing the photo on the Internet, Bal surprisingly found people’s love for it, which encouraged him to continue.
Since then, Bal has got 600,000 fans on the Internet. He keeps producing as many different shadow works as possible. For example, he made a pair of sunglasses look like the wings of a butterfly and a bottle become a lamp. All his works are interesting and playful. In 2023, Bal finished Shadowology films and a museum exhibition.

There were once lots of sunflower sea stars along the Pacific Coast of North America. But it is said that about 90 percent of them have died in the last 10 years.
Scientists at the University of Washington are researching to understand why the sea stars died. To do so, they are growing them in a lab. They have nearly 150 sea stars between the ages of one and three, and around 5,000 baby sea stars. They also have 16 adult sea stars from ocean waters.
The result shows the illness that killed them is known as sea star wasting syndrome (消耗综合征). Jason Hodin, the top researcher at the lab, said that the illness might have happened because the change of climate makes the water warmer.
Another group from the university is also working on the study. They are trying to find out if warmer water changes the way the sea stars move. The group is using special cameras to see how the sea stars move and to create 3D pictures. The pictures would show differences even with small changes to their environments, such as a small water temperature change.
So far, the researchers think the sea stars are able to live in warmer water. Hodin said, “If sunflower sea stars are going to recover in the ocean with or without the help of humans, they’re going to be doing so when climate changes.”
34.Why are the scientists doing the research?
A.To study temperature changes in the Pacific Ocean. B.To find out the reason for the death of the sea stars.
C.To grow more baby sunflower sea stars in the lab. D.To see how many sunflower sea stars are.
35.What can we know from the research result?
A.The sea stars were killed by people in large numbers.
B.The sea stars died because the sea water got colder.
C.The sea stars got an illness called sea star wasting syndrome.
D.The sea stars died because the sea water was polluted.
36.Another group in the university is trying to find out ________
A.how the sea stars change the water temperature.
B.what the sea stars look like when moving under cold water.
C.why the water temperature changes.
D.if warmer water makes the sea stars move differently.

How good are you at remembering what you’ve learned at school? It is not an easy process for all. No one’s memory is perfect. Even the most intelligent people forget things. 41 It means he is not using his mind to his advantage.
The brain has short-term memory and long-term memory. When we learn something new, it stays in our memory for around 20 to 30 seconds. This is our short-term memory. 42 If we repeat it and use it often, this information can change from short-term memory into long-term memory, where memories are stored for a long time.
So one secret of remembering is to change short-term memory into long-term memory. 43 But one thing is for sure — practicing, or repeating information, is one of the most popular methods of remembering. Scientists say that long-term memory will never fill up completely with memories in one lifetime!
However, this is not always the best way to memorize things. Forgetting things that are not important helps our brain to remember things that are useful. 44
If you are interested in improving your memory, there are lots of simple things you can do, including eating healthily, sleeping well and exercising daily. 45 You can play mind games, learn a musical instrument or study a new language. In a word, all you need to do is to live healthily and use your brain often.
A.Besides, it’s also important to challenge your brain.
B.It can hold a small amount of information.
C.No one knows exactly how this happens.
D.This does not mean a person has a bad memory.
E.Our brain is always “cleaning out”useless information to make room for something more useful.
【答案】41.D 42.B 43.C 44.E 45.A
【导语】本文主要讲了加强记忆力的关键是将短期记忆转化为长期记忆,可以通过重复练习、健康生活方式和脑力活动来实现。

42.根据上文“This is our short-term memory.”
44.根据上文“Forgetting things that are not important helps our brain to remember things that are useful”可知,此空与“忘记”有关,E选项“我们的大脑总是在‘清理’无用的信息,为更有用的东西腾出空间。”符合,故选E。
45.根据下文“You can play mind games, learn a musical instrument or study a new language.”可知,此处与“训练大脑,改善记忆”有关,A选项“此外,挑战你的大脑也很重要。”符合,故选A。

C.The sea stars got an illness called sea star wasting syndrome.

36.Another group in the university is trying to find out ________
A.how the sea stars change the water temperature.
B.what the sea stars look like when moving under cold water.
C.why the water temperature changes.
D.if warmer water makes the sea stars move differently.

第二节、阅读填空(共5小题,每小题1分,计5分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文意思,选出可以填入空格的选项。

第二节、阅读填空(共5小题,每小题1分,计5分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文意思,选出可以填入空格的选项。
