B South Korean writer Han Kang, 53, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature 2024 on Oct.10 for a poetic body of work that the Nobel Committee said “confronts historical traumas (创伤) and exposes the fragility of human life”, making her the first female from Asia to receive the prize since 1901. Han started her career by making her publishing debut (首次亮相) as a poet in a South Korean magazine in 1993; her first short story collection was published in 1995 and her first novel Black Deer in 1998. She later went on to write longer prose works. “Writing novels is a way of questioning for me and I just try to complete my questions about human violence and the possibility or impossibility of refusing it through the process of my writing,” Han said in an interview. “And I will be happy if the readers could share my questions.” Most of her writing focuses on “the painful marks left by our modern history”, reported CNN. For example, The Vegetarian is about a woman who chooses to stop eating meat after having violent dreams about animal slaughter, struggling to break free from violence both in the world around her and within herself. Despite these heavy topics, her works have a unique awareness of the connections between body and soul, the living and the dead, and the writing style is poetic and experimental, according to the Swedish Academy, empowering her works to go beyond boundaries and touch the souls of people everywhere. This honor has inspired a new generation of writers, especially young people and women. It shows them that with perseverance and creativity, they can make their mark in the literary field. 4. What do we know about Han Kang from the first two paragraphs? A. She writes about human suffering and weakness. B. She is the first Asian author to win the Nobel Prize. C. Her debut work was a collection of short stories. D. Her first novel Black Deer was published in 1993. 5. What does Han Kang hope her readers to achieve from her novels? A. A search for solutions to daily struggles. B. A shared reflection on human violence. C A deeper understanding of global issues. D. A sense of relief from modern pressure. 6. What can we infer about Han Kang’s writing? A. She explores the development of modern history. B. Women’s confusion is an essential topic of her works. C. She composes poetry featuring a practical style. D. People from different cultures can relate to her works. 7. Which of the following best describes Han Kang’s winning the award? A. Confusing. B. Alarming. C. Encouraging. D. Amusing. C Humans are well known for looking in the mirror and responding to their reflections. Interestingly, scientific research has revealed that it is a rare trait among animals, with only a few species displaying this ability. Self-recognition is one of the most important indicators of animal intelligence. Over the years, it has been discovered in animals such as great apes, Asian elephants and fish. Now, in a fascinating series of experiments, scientists have found that wild Adelie penguins in Antarctica exhibit some signs of self-awareness. Scientists demonstrate self-recognition in animals through a “mirror test,” where animals are made to look in a mirror in order to study their reactions. Typically, a small area of the subject’s body is marked with a red dye that can only be seen through the mirror. If the animal notices the mark while looking at its reflection, it is considered an indication of self-awareness. To identify this trait in wild penguins, the team conducted a series of experiments in east Antarctica, studying a population of wild Adelie penguins. In the first test, mirrors were placed in the penguins’ path, and the team observed their reactions as they approached. In a second experiment, individual penguins were directed toward a cardboard structure with mirrors at either end of the enclosure. The third test involved placing stickers (贴纸) on the mirrors. While in the final experiment, penguins were made to wear bibs (围嘴) in front of a mirror. In the first one, the penguins carefully inspected their reflections but gave no response. In the second experiment with the cardboard corrals, they moved, which suggested penguins were inspecting themselves. Surprisingly, the birds were quite agitated by the stickered mirrors, and they attempted to remove them. Lastly, the cloths did not bother the penguins. According to the researchers, they suspect that the penguins have some level of self-awareness. More observation is needed to fully understand this behavioral trait. 8. What is the main purpose of the mirror test? A. To measure the intelligence of animals. B. To study animals’ self-recognition. C. To mark animals’ bodies with red dye. D. To assist animals to learn to use mirrors. 9. What do we know about the experiments with Adelie penguins? A. The penguins underwent only one experiment. B. The penguins wore bibs in the first experiment. C. The scientists used various methods to test the penguins. D. The penguins were trained before the experiments. 10. What does the underlined word “agitated” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Disturbed. B. Pleased. C. Frightened. D. Thrilled. 11. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. Wild Adelie Penguins: A Surprising Display of Self-Awareness B. The Mirror Test: A Universal Method for Animal Research C. Wild Adelie Penguins: Amazing Animal Intelligence D. Penguins in Antarctica: Their Habitats and Behaviors D It’s a question that has puzzled scientists for a long time: why exactly do we yawn? In a recent breakthrough, scientists have discovered the part of the brain responsible for contagious yawning. It’s called the primary motor cortex (运动皮层), and controls movement in the body. When triggered, it makes us yawn. But we can’t choose to yawn — it’s an involuntary imitation of other people. You know how it goes: your friend yawns, you yawn. Knowing which section of the brain is involved is only part of the answer. There is still a deeper question of “why”. And we don’t only yawn when others do, we sometimes yawn alone. So, let’s start with the physiological theories behind yawning. As far back as 400BC, Greek physician Hippocrates assumed that yawning released harmful gases from the body, like “steam escaping from a cauldron”. His colourful theory is now, sadly, discounted. A more recent idea suggests that we yawn in order to cool down the brain. Just like a busy computer processor, our brains can overheat. Psychologist Gordon Gallup has argued that the act of yawning delivers a rush of oxygen to the brain, helping us think more clearly. What about the connection between yawning and tiredness? We certainly yawn more when we’re feeling sleepy, but why is this? Theories that it helps give the body extra energy are largely discredited, as we don’t yawn when we exercise, a time when we definitely need more get-up-and-go! Psychologist Catriona Morrison from the University of Leeds says yawning is an ancient reflex. She told the BBC that it may have started in “the days of cavemen when someone had to be on watch all the time — yawning increases cerebral (大脑的) blood flow so can improve alertness.” What about our friends’ contagious yawning? Some think it comes down to empathy. While all vertebrate mammals (哺乳动物) yawn, only humans and chimpanzees “catch” yawns from others. Studies have shown we yawn more frequently when in the company of close relatives and friends. Could yawning actually help us strengthen our closest relationships? If it does, next time you yawn in company, don’t feel too embarrassed. You’re just showing off your people skills. 12. What is yawning described as? A. A voluntary action. B. A learned behavior. C. A thoughtful decision. D. An unconscious copy. 13. What effect does yawning have on brain function? A. It decreases brain activities. B. It signals a need for more sleep. C. It enhances the brain’s cooling process. D. It blocks the intake of oxygen. 14. What is the relationship between yawning and tiredness? A. Yawning provides extra energy during the sleepy time. B. Yawning increases alertness by improving brain blood circulation. C. Yawning happens when the body is overactive and needs to relax. D. Yawning cools down the body to reduce tiredness. 15. What does the passage imply about yawning in the last paragraph? A. Yawning may strengthen relationships due to its contagious nature. B. Yawning is observed only in humans and some other mammals. C. People yawning frequently are perceived as less empathetic. D. The frequency of yawning increases in social situations involving strangers. We all know just how important it is to choose your words wisely. _____16_____ The mannerisms that you use, both consciously and unconsciously, send messages to everyone that you' re talking to. As I entered the lecture hall, Dr. Fred Vogt asked me, “Do you know about the Make-A-Wish Foundation?” “Yes,” I replied. “Well, a 17-year-old girl Amy Graham has been diagnosed as having terminal (晚期的) cancer. Doctors gave her three days. Her dying wish was to attend your lecture.” I was shocked. I felt a combination of awe and doubt. I couldn’t believe it. I thought kids who were dying would want to go see Disneyland, or suchlike. Why would a kid with only a few days to live want to spend their final days listening to a motivational speaker? Suddenly my thoughts were interrupted… “Here’s Amy.” Before me stood a girl wearing a bright red hat to cover her head which was bald from all of the treatments. Her weak body was a bit bent. She said, “My two goals were to graduate from high school and to attend your lecture. My doctors didn’t believe I could do either and they didn’t think I’d have enough energy. I have to rely on my parents now.” Tears welled in my eyes; I was choked up. My mind was being shaken. I cleared my throat and smiled, “Thanks for wanting to come.” We hugged, wiped our eyes and separated. That Sunday afternoon I held the workshop that Amy and her parents attended. The audience was packed to overflowing with over a thousand attendees eager to learn, grow and become more fully human. I humbly asked the audience if they wanted to learn a healing process that might serve them for life. From the stage it appeared that everyone’s hand was raised high in the air. I taught the audience how to vigorously (用力地) rub their hands together, separate them by two inches and feel the healing energy. Then I paired them off with a partner to feel the healing energy from themselves to another, explaining that everyone had healing potential to support others. At that point an idea struck me. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With a round of applause, Amy’s dad led her off the stage. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 南宁三中2025 届高三年级上学期11月考试 英 语 (考试时间: 120分钟 总分: 150分) 注意事项: 1. 1. 4. Wild Adelie Penguins: Amazing Animal Intelligence D Penguins in Antarctica: Their Habitats and Behaviors 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第三段中“Scientists demonstrate self-recognition in animals through a ‘mirror test,’ where animals are made to look in a mirror in order to study their reactions.(科学家通过‘镜像测试’来证明动物的自我意识,在这个测试中,让动物照镜子以研究它们的反应)”可知,镜像测试的主要目的是研究动物的自我意识。 根据第三段中“To identify this trait in wild penguins, the team conducted a series of experiments in east Antarctica, studying a population of wild Adelie penguins. In the first test, mirrors were placed in the penguins’ path, and the team observed their reactions as they approached. In a second experiment, individual penguins were directed toward a cardboard structure with mirrors at either end of the enclosure. The third test involved placing stickers (贴纸) on the mirrors. While in the final experiment, penguins were made to wear bibs (围嘴) in front of a mirror.(为了确定野生企鹅的这一特征,研究小组在东南极进行了一系列实验,研究了一群野生阿德利企鹅。在第一个测试中,在企鹅经过的地方放置了镜子,当它们靠近时,研究小组观察它们的反应。在第二个实验中,个别企鹅被引导到一个纸板结构,在围栏的两端都有镜子。第三个测试是在镜子上贴贴纸。在最后的实验中,企鹅被要求在镜子前戴上围兜)”对四个实验的介绍可知,科学家使用了多种方法来测试企鹅。故选C项。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“the birds were quite agitated by the stickered mirrors, and they attempted to remove them (它们试图把它们移走)”中“they attempted to remove them”以及下文中的“Lastly, the cloths did not bother the penguins.(最后,这些衣服不会打扰企鹅。)” 故选A项。 故A选项“Wild Adelie Penguins: A Surprising Display of Self-Awareness(野生阿德利企鹅:惊人的自我意识展示)”最符合文章主旨,是最佳标题。故选A项。 D It’s a question that has puzzled scientists for a long time: why exactly do we yawn? B It signals a need for more sleep. 12. D 13. C 14. B 15. Suddenly my thoughts were interrupted… “Here’s Amy.” Before me stood a girl wearing a bright red hat to cover her head, which was bald from all of the treatments. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】At that point an idea struck me. I said to the audience, “This morning I was introduced to Amy Graham, a 17-year-old. I want to bring her up here and let you all send healing life energy toward her.” Supported by her father, Amy stepped onto the stage, looking frail from an absolute lack of exercise. She talked about what she was suffering from and her final wish to be at this workshop. Touched by her story, the audience spontaneously warmed up their hands and engaged in the simple exercise, after which they gave her a tearful standing ovation. With a round of applause, Amy’s dad led her off the stage. At that moment, the workshop became more than just a lecture on positive thinking — it showed the power of hope and the resilience of the human spirit. After the workshop concluded, attendees lingered, sharing stories and exchanging contact information. Many approached Amy and her parents, offering words of encouragement. It was clear that something extraordinary had taken place — a blend of hope, belief, and the courage to confront adversity with positivity. Before leaving, Amy thanked me for the unexpected invitation, which was a real bonus for her and gave her the healing power beyond physical remedies. 词汇激活 行为类 ①参与:engage in/participate in ②支持:support/back up 情绪类 ①感动:touched/moved ②感激:thank/be grateful to 【点睛】[高分句型1].
