To bring the Olympic spirit to developing nations in the late 1990s, the Olympic Committee allowed a small number of “wild card” athletes to join the Games. Because they didn’t have to go through any qualifying rounds (资格赛) to compete, when they arrived, not all of the competitors were prepared. One such athlete was a swimmer from Equatorial Guinea named Eric Moussambani. When Moussambani arrived at the 2000 Sydney Games, he’d only been training for the 100-meter freestyle for about eight months. He’d also never been in an Olympic-size pool and had never raced more than 50 meters. Regardless, he was determined to represent his country.
The three wild card athletes were given their own race, and Moussambani was next to the other two swimmers from Niger and Tajikistan. When the official called the swimmers to begin the game, both of Moussambani’s competitors were disqualified (取消资格) for false starts. Left to swim by himself, Moussambani dove in and dog-paddled, breathing air and moving his arms and legs. Halfway through the race, the situation looked so serious that the audience seriously worried he was drowning (溺水).
When Moussambani finally passed the finishing line and pulled himself from the water, the applause thundered. His final time was 1: 52.72—more than twice that of swimmers in the previous race. But Moussambani couldn’t have been happier. He told reporters, “I’m going to jump and dance all night long in celebration of my personal success.”
Moussambani’s courage and determination made him an Olympic celebrity (名人). He kept training for the 2004 Games and even reduced his time to a respectable 57 seconds.
4. What can we know about “wild card” athletes?
A. They are well-prepared.
B. They join the competition late.
C. They have to get professional training.
D. They come from developing countries.
5. How did Moussambani do in the race?
A. He lost the race. B. He swam unskillfully.
C. He failed at the beginning. D. He disappointed everyone.
6. How did Moussambani feel after finishing the race?
A. Pretty calm. B. Quite ashamed.
C. Very disappointed. D. Extremely excited.
7. Which words can best describe Moussambani?
A. Smart and honest. B. Patient and careful.
C. Brave and determined. D. Optimistic and modest.

When it comes to reading, people have different preferences. Some people will choose paper books because they’re easy to borrow and share. Others will go for e-readers, perhaps on a phone, because they’re convenient. But which is the more environment-friendly choice?
Digital reading(数字阅读)is on the rise, now making up about 15% of the total US book market. However, traditional print publishing is still by far the most popular type — and it comes with a high carbon footprint(碳足迹). According to a 2023 report from Words Rated, print book publishing is the third biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions, and 32 million trees are cut down each year in the US to make paper for books. Then there’s the problem of printing and transport, not to mention the many unsold books that are destroyed.
Digital reading seems to have a great advantage over print because it is paperless, so it saves trees and transport. Moreover, technology companies that make e-readers, such as Amazon, offer recycling programs for old devices(设备). But digital devices also come with a large carbon footprint, mainly at the production stage. Their cases are made from plastic that comes from fossil fuels, and the minerals in their batteries require a lot of resources to be mined.
So back to the earlier question: which way of reading is more environmentally friendly? “It’s not cut and dried,” said Mike Berners-Lee, a professor at Lancaster Environment Centre in the United Kingdom. “If you buy an e-reader and you read lots of books on it, then it’s the lowest carbon thing to do. But if you buy it, read a couple of books, and find that you prefer paper books, then it’s the worst of all worlds.” Yet, Berners-Lee said that reading is still, relatively speaking, an environmental-friendly activity.
8. What does the report show?
A. Printed books have a poor sales record in the US.
B. Print publishing is not friendly to the environment.
C. Digital reading is more popular than paper reading.
D. Printing books costs more than producing e-readers.
9. Which aspect of digital devices has the largest impact on the environment?
A Its transportation B. Its waste management.
C. Its production process. D. Its recycling programs.
10. According to the text, it is better to choose digital reading if you______.
A. read a lot B. hardly take notes
C. enjoy reading at night D. only read books out of need
11. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Why Should We Choose Digital Reading?
B. How Does Print Publishing Affect the Environment?
C. Will Traditional Print Reading Disappear in the Future?
D. Which is Better for the Environment, Paper Books or E-readers?
D
Teenagers often have a bad reputation, with parents saying they struggle to get through to them, and get confused by teenage slang. But many of the common beliefs about teenagers are myths. They aren’t all lazy and rude, as a new report suggests.
A study of 184 teens has shown how their adolescent friendships prepare them for parenting. The group was followed for over 30 years, starting from the age of 13. Each year, group members selected their closest friend to take part in the study with them. Attending a lab in their chosen pairs, the friend asked for advice on a problem, and responses were scored in relation to four core aspects of empathy (同情): emotional support, instrumental support, emotional engagement, and interpretation of their friend’s problem.
When members of the group began having children, they were asked different questions relating to their parenting style. This came in the form of 12 hypothetical (假设的) situations where their child expressed a negative emotion, and they said how they’d respond. Their responses were labelled either supportive or non-supportive. The results showed one important correlation—those who had been more empathetic teens, made more supportive parents.
The study also explored how much empathy participants received from their own parents. Unsurprisingly, those with emotionally supportive parents appeared naturally more empathetic towards their friends, continuing to emulate their upbringings into adulthood.
Although the teens with unsupportive parents sometimes became harsh parents, this wasn’t always the case. Some were able to break cycles of poor empathy, and despite difficult upbringings, were still able to demonstrate keen empathy in their adolescent friendships.
Dr. Jessica A. Stern, the study author, concludes “Adults often underestimate the importance of teens being able to spend time with their friends. But experiences in close, supportive friendships as a teenager are actually really important for healthy development. They provide an essential context for developing critical social skills like empathy, responding appropriately to difficult emotions, and even later parenting.”
12. What can we infer from paragraph 1?
A. Teenagers aren’t what they used to be.
B. People get the wrong idea about teenagers.
C. The early parent-child relationship is important.
D. Young people trust their friends more than adults do.
13. Who will be supportive parents according to the study?
A. Teenagers who grow up with strict parents.
B. Teenagers who make many friends at school.
C. Teenagers who are independent of their parents.
D. Teenagers who show empathy for close friends.
14. What does the underlined word “emulate” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Reveal. B. Copy. C. Change. D. Record.
15. What does Dr. Jessica Stern think of adolescent friendships?
A. They develop over time.
B. They are hard to maintain.
C. They turn into love sometimes.
D. They have a strong effect on teenagers.

C. He failed at the beginning. D. He disappointed everyone.
6. How did Moussambani feel after finishing the race?

A. Its transportation B.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. D

【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并根据文章第一段“When it comes to reading, people have different preferences. Some people will choose paper books because they’re easy to borrow and share. Others will go for e-readers, perhaps on a phone, because they’re convenient. But which is the more environment-friendly choice?(说到阅读,人们有不同的偏好。有些人会选择纸质书,因为它们很容易借阅和分享。还有一些人会选择电子阅读器,也许是在手机上,因为它们很方便。但哪个是更环保的选择?)”可知,文章围绕纸质书和电子书哪个更环保的问题展开论述,所以最适合的标题是“纸质书还是电子阅读器,哪个对环境更好”。故选D。
