The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting (期待) all summer. I didn’t want summer to end, but I was excited about going to high school for my first week.
When I got to school in the morning on the first day, I realized how large the school was, and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. Luckily, a kind senior showed up and guided me to my homeroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar (不熟悉的) faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend Casey. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher. She was exciting and fun.
After finishing four classes without too much of a challenge, I didn’t feel too bad about ninth grade. However, the fifth class changed everything. I didn’t feel ready after all. My teacher’s name is Mr. Valassidis but he told us to call him Mr. V. Mr. V told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing. But come on. 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Now I was afraid.
The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too.
The first week passed quickly. Although a lot of things were overwhelming (令人不知所措的): the size of the campus, the crowds (人群) and the seniors, having a totally different experience than I had ever had before was really exciting. Now, I’m really happy about high school. I have lots of friends in my classes, I really like my teachers and I’m meeting new people.

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” But now scientists have given us an other warning: too much play with smart phones or computers makes you dull too.
“Many focus on the benefits of digital devices(设备)in education but ignore the costs”, said Patricia Greenfield from the University of California, “losing the ability to understand the emotions of other people is one of the costs.” Greenfield and her research team did an experiment. They worked with 105 children who spend about 4.5 hours in front of screens on a school day. The students were asked to describe the emotions towards the pictures of people who were happy, sad, angry or scared. Then, half of them attended a five-day nature and science camp. There they had no smart phones, TV, or computers. The other half stayed in school and spent the five days as usual. Five days later, all the children took the test again.
Students who had been to the camp got about 5 percent more answers correct than they had done before the camp. But the other group of students didn't show much improvement. The study is not perfect in some ways, said the researchers. But scientists say that the study is still a warning for us.
“Emotional skills develop in practice and the brain develops through real interaction.” said Professor Taylor, a professor at the University of San Francisco.
Researchers talked to 2,000 parents of children aged 2-16 in the UK about what activities their children could do confidently. The results were surprising: Their children could use a tablet(平板电脑)(59%)and work a mobile phone(57%)more confidently than they could tie their shoe laces(鞋带)(53%)! So, spend more time away from mobile phones and computers if you want to be an understanding friend, and not a member of what the Daily Mail called “Generation Helpless”.
8. According to Professor Greenfield, using digital media in education leads to ______.
A. being in bad terms with family members
B. making more mistakes when taking exams
C. falling far behind others in all schoolwork
D. failing to relate to other people's emotions
9. Scientists think the results of Greenfield's experiment ______.
A. are alarming for people B. are far from perfect
C. are quite surprising D. need to be improved
10. What can we know from the text?
A. Too much play with digital devices raised some worries.
B. Students learned how to describe emotions in the experiment.
C. Students living without screens did much better in studies.
D. Most of the UK children couldn't tie their shoe laces.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Stay away from the Internet B. Here comes a digital world!
C. Screens do harm to emotions D. How people become addicted?
D
It’s a popular belief that a fish’s memory lasts for only seven seconds. It may seem sad to think that they don’t remember what they’ve eaten or where they’ve been, and they don’t identify you or any of their friends -- every moment in their life would be like seeing the world for the first time.
But don’t be so quick to feel sorry for them. A new study has found that fish have a much better memory than we used to think. In fact, certain species of fish can even remember events from as long as 12 days ago. In the study, researchers from Mac Ewan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again. Researchers used computer software to monitor the fish’s movements. They found that after such a long break the fish still went to the same place where they first got food. This suggested that they could remember their past experiences.
In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. An earlier study showed that they behaved aggressively(挑衅地)in front of certain fish, perhaps because they remembered their past “fights”. But until the latest findings, there was no clear evidence.
Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to survive in the wild. “If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives at risks,” lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science.
For a long time, fish were placed far below chimpanzees, dolphins and mice on the list of smart animals. But this study has given scientists a new understanding of their intelligence.
12. According to the article, people commonly believe that _______.
A. fish can only remember part of their past experiences
B. fish can remember things that happened long time ago
C. a fish’s memory lasts for only seven minutes
D. fish don’t recognize any of their friends
13. How can fish benefit most from a good memory? They can remember _______.
A. where to get food and survive
B. their enemies and fight
C. where to escape to when in danger
D. their friends and help each other
14. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. African cichlids always treat other fish aggressively.
B. African cichlids can remember things for 12 days.
C. African cichlids don’t belong to the list of smart animals.
D. Only African cichlids have a good memory.
15. What is the article mainly about?
A. Fish having very bad memories.
B. Fish being smarter than we thought.
C. How fish improve their memory.
D. What we can learn from fish.

Karl walked to the back of the classroom to put his book away. There, lying on the carpet in front of the bookcase, was a golden ticket! He picked it up. His heart beat faster when he saw that the name line was blank.
The boys and girls in Karl’s class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their work or by being extra helpful or kind. Once a week his teacher, Miss Evans, drew a ticket out of a jar, and let the winner choose a prize. Karl couldn’t believe his luck.
The golden ticket was going to be drawn and here was another ticket, just for him. He looked around, but no one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other.
Karl decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the prize jar with the tickets he’d already earned. With so many chances, at least one of his tickets would be picked! Then he could choose the pink pig as his sister’s birthday present, just like what he had been hoping for.
He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn’t his heartbeat.
He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out. He did find the ticket, but he hadn’t earned it. Maybe whoever lost it was looking for it. But he needed this extra ticket for his great plan!
He remembered what Dad had told him and his sister. “When you make a right choice, you can feel peaceful inside. You never have to feel bad about your choice later.”
Paragraph 1:
He put the pencil back in his pocket.

8 According to Professor Greenfield, using digital media in education leads to ______.
A. being in bad terms with family members
B. making more mistakes when taking exams
C. falling far behind others in all schoolwork
D. failing to relate to other people's emotions
9. Scientists think the results of Greenfield's experiment ______.

C. Students living without screens did much better in studies.
D. Most of the UK children couldn't tie their shoe laces.
11. What is the best title for the text?

It’s a popular belief that a fish’s memory lasts for only seven seconds. It may seem sad to think that they don’t remember what they’ve eaten or where they’ve been and they don’t identify you or any of their friends -- every moment in their life would be like seeing the world for the first time.

13. How can fish benefit most from a good memory? They can remember _______.
A. where to get food and survive
B. their enemies and fight
C. where to escape to when in danger
D. their friends and help each other
14. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. African cichlids always treat other fish aggressively.
B. African cichlids can remember things for 12 days.
C. African cichlids don’t belong to the list of smart animals.
D. Only African cichlids have a good memory.

I’m sorry to hear that you have trouble adapting to your new school life in our school. It is not unusual for foreign students to feel lonely and anxious in a new school. But this situation can be easily changed if you take my advice.
First of all, you are supposed to study hard at Chinese, which can give you more opportunities to communicate with your teachers and classmates. In addition, why not make some friends? They can help you know more about China, and you can express your thoughts and feelings to them so that you may forget your loneliness. 第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The golden ticket was going to be drawn, and here was another ticket, just for him.

Paragraph 2:
“Karl, I’d like you to have another ticket,” Miss Evans said.

【答案】He put the pencil back in his pocket. And then he walked over to his teacher’s desk. “Miss Evans, I found this golden ticket on the floor near the bookcase. I think somebody has lost it. I did find the ticket, but I haven’t earned it. And these are mine,” he said, dropping several tickets into the jar. When he turned around to leave, Miss Evans called him back.
“Karl, I’d like you to have another ticket,” Miss Evans said. “You are honest and returned this one. By the way, what prize would you choose if your ticket was drawn? The big candy bar or the fire truck? ” Karl said happily right away, “The pink pig! It’s my sister’s birthday next week, and I really want to give it to her. That’s her favorite animal.” Karl sat down at his desk and smiled. He still wanted his ticket to be picked, but he would be happy even if it wasn’t. Dad was right. Making the right choice did make him feel great, and he still might win the pink pig.
