A(24-25高二湖北期中考试)
On a spring day, Guinness World Records held a ceremony in Bournemouth to award local lifeguard Chris Lewis the title. Lewis, 74, began working at the Dorset resort when he was 16. “It’s the best job in the world,” he said. “You’re working and helping people. What could be better?”
His colleagues were just half his age. But he is still fighting fit. Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguards must complete a 400m pool swim in under 7.5 minutes. They have to do a 25m pool swim underwater and a 25-metre surface swim consecutively in under 50 seconds and run 200m along the beach in under 40 seconds. The tests are still reasonably comfortable for Lewis. All winter he has been doing 3,000 metres of sea swimming each month.
Lewis’s adventure began in 1965 when a police officer spotted that he was a keen swimmer and suggested he get his lifesaving badges. The following year he began volunteering as a lifeguard at the age of 16. Then he became part of the RNLI lifeguards in 2001 and began providing beach patrols for local authorities.
Now the RNLI patrols more than 240 beaches across the UK. Lewis laughed when asked if he had seen many changes. “The RNLI’s equipment in 2024 includes jetskis, rescue boats and quad bikes. When I started, we had a T-shirt, swimming trunks, a swimming hat, a coat if you were lucky and a rescue tube. It was really very different.”
His most memorable rescue took place in 2010 when three children got into trouble while swimming. There was a combination of wind and a lively spring tide. One of them was being hurled into a rock with severe cuts. The other two were being “knocked around” by the waves. Lewis swam out just with a rescue tube but managed to get all three back. Over the years, he has performed hundreds of rescues. He says giving advice that prevents people getting into trouble is preferable to carrying out rescues. “I would love to go through the whole of summer without having to rescue anybody.”
1.Why is the training of RNLI mentioned?
A.To explain the importance of swimming skills. B.To stress Lewis’s efforts and capacity.
C.To show demands of being a safeguard. D.To describe the test process of fitness swimming
2.What made Lewis begin his life-saving career?
A.His voluntary experience. B.His passion for swimming.
C.An invitation from RNLI. D.A police officer’s suggestion.
3.What can be inferred from Lewis’s words in Paragraph 4?
A.RNLI cares for the safety of lifeguards. B.RNLI currently needs more lifeguards.
C.Lifeguard work was not easy in the past. D.The former lifeguards were more skilled.
4.Which of the following best describes Lewis?
A.Devoted and caring. B.Selfless and honest.
C.Determined and humorous. D.Generous and ambitious.
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.C 4.A
根据第二段中“Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguards must complete a 400m pool swim in under 7.5 minutes. They have to do a 25m pool swim underwater and a 25-metre surface swim consecutively in under 50 seconds and run 200m along the beach in under 40 seconds. The tests are still reasonably comfortable for Lewis. (皇家国家救生艇协会(RNLI)的救生员必须在7.5分钟内游完400米泳池。他们必须在50秒内完成25米的水下游泳和25米的水面游泳,并在40秒内沿着海滩跑200米。这些测试对Lewis来说还算轻松。)”和“All winter he has been doing 3,000 metres of sea swimming each month. (整个冬天,他每个月都要进行3000米的海游。)”可知,此处提到RNLI的训练是为了强调Lewis的努力和能力,尽管他已经74岁,但仍然能够轻松完成这些训练。故选B项。
2.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Lewis’s adventure began in 1965 when a police officer spotted that he was a keen swimmer and suggested he get his lifesaving badges. (Lewis的冒险始于1965年,当时一名警察发现他是一名游泳爱好者,并建议他获得救生徽章。)”可知,是一名警察的建议让Lewis开始了他的救生生涯。故选D项。
3.推理判断题。根据第四段中Lewis的话“The RNLI’s equipment in 2024 includes jetskis, rescue boats and quad bikes. When I started, we had a T-shirt, swimming trunks, a swimming hat, a coat if you were lucky and a rescue tube. It was really very different. (2024年,RNLI的装备包括水上摩托、救生艇和四轮摩托车。当我开始的时候,我们只有一件T恤、游泳裤、游泳帽,如果你幸运的话还有一件外套和一个救生圈。这真的很不一样。)”可知,Lewis通过对比现在的装备和他开始时的装备,暗示了过去的救生工作并不容易,因为装备非常简陋。故选C项。
4.推理判断题。根据第一段中Lewis的话“It’s the best job in the world,” he said. “You’re working and helping people. What could be better? ( 他说:“这是世界上最好的工作。你在工作,同时在帮助别人。还有什么比这更好的呢?”)”以及最后一段中“Over the years, he has performed hundreds of rescues. He says giving advice that prevents people getting into trouble is preferable to carrying out rescues. (多年来,他进行了数百次救援。他说,给出防止人们陷入困境的建议比进行救援更好。)”可知,Lewis非常热爱他的救生工作,致力于帮助他人,并且非常关心他人的安全。因此,用“Devoted and caring (全心全意且关爱他人)”来形容他最恰当。故选A项。

The 7 Words That Can Ruin a Relationship
The phrase “Don't worry; we will work it out" can be a double-edged sword in partnerships, whether it's a romantic relationship, a business cooperation,or a friendship. While it's often intended to reassure and provide hope in challenging times, its repeated use without meaningful action can lessen trust and weaken the partnership 1
False Reassurance
David has some impulsive(冲动的)spending habits. As a charming car sales professional, he enjoys himself during those times when he has strong sales numbers. 2 He just says to his supportive girlfriend, Bridget, “I don't want to talk about it”.
David wants to move in with Bridget in a new luxury apartment. Hetells Bridget,”Think how nice this place is. And, by the way, baby, my sales figures are hot lately!” Bridget then brings up concerns over monthly expenses, knowing that David has high credit-card debt. David responds with, “Don't worry; we will work it out”. However, because David fails to take steps to address his financial struggles, their problems continue and worsen. 3 And Bridget questions the sincerity behind his words, leading to doubt and frustration.
Communication breakdown
James and Tony, longtime friends bonded by their shared love for softball, excitedly took on the task of organizing their neighborhood’s annual league(联盟). However, as they focused in the planning process, their communication began to crack.
James, acareful planner, insisted on sticking to a strict schedule, while Tony, who has a more easy-going nature, repeatedly said, "Don't worry; we will work it out," selecting fun over structure. 4 For example, they argued about team formations and game schedules, causing tension to rise between them. Frustrated by their inability to see eye-to-eye, James and Tony found themselves at a crossroads, unsure if their friendship could stand the tension of their difference perspectives on how to run the league.
5 But it's also important for partners to back up their words to address challenges. Otherwise, the overuse of "Don't worry; we will work it out" can gradually lessen trust, communication, and responsibility, ultimately leading to the worsening of the partnership itself.
A.So his reassurances start to feel blank.
B.League participants felt caught in the conflict.
C.However, he gets quiet when his sales figures drop.
D.In conclusion, offering reassurance is helpful in any partnership.
E.Their conflicting viewpoints led to heated debates on everything.
F.The response ruins our bond with our family, partners and friends.
G.Following are two examples of how it lessens trust and harms relationships.
【答案】1.G 2.C 3.A 4.E 5.D
2.上文“As a charming car sales professional, he enjoys himself during those times when he has strong sales numbers.(作为一个有魅力的汽车销售专业人士,在他的销售数字强劲的时候他很开心)”描述了 David 在销售数字好的时候很健谈,结合下文“He just says to his supportive girlfriend, Bridget, ‘I don’t want to talk about it’.(他只是对支持他的女友Bridget说:‘我不想谈这件事。’)”
3.根据上文“However, because David fails to take steps to address his financial struggles, their problems continue and worsen.(然而,由于David没有采取措施解决他的财务困难,他们的问题继续恶化)”和下文“And Bridget questions the sincerity behind his words, leading to doubt and frustration.(Bridget质疑他话语背后的诚意,导致怀疑和沮丧)”可知,上文描述David未能采取行动解决财务问题,下文说明了Bridget对David保证的真实性产生怀疑,导致怀疑和挫败感,A项“所以他的安慰开始变得空洞”强调了重复使用“Don’t worry; we will work it out”而不采取实际行动会如何逐渐削弱信任。故选A。
4.下文“For example, they argued about team formations and game schedules, causing tension to rise between them. Frustrated by their inability to see eye-to-eye, James and Tony found themselves at a crossroads, unsure if their friendship could stand the tension of their difference perspectives on how to run the league.(例如,他们争论团队组成和比赛日程,导致他们之间的紧张关系上升。

when引导的时间状语完整的句子为when kombucha is properly prepared;主从句主语一致,且从句有is,故可省略从句的主语和is。故填prepared。

“Older children may enjoy it”和“(limit) a child’s daily intake of kombucha”之间是转折关系,因此空格处用but表转折,故填but。
recommend doing sth.
All the specialists told us what would happen during my five-year-old sister’s treatment. The doctors talked about the potential side effects of the drugs that might occur over the next two years of treatment.
When our parents told our sister she had cancer, her biggest concern was losing her hair. “Will all my hair really fall out? Will people make fun of me?” she asked, her voice filled with worry.
“Don’t worry,” I later told her in secret. “When you lose your hair, I’ll shave mine with a razor (剃刀) and we’ll both be bald (秃头的). We’ ll walk down the street proudly with our bald heads held high. We’ll swim, go to parks and play at the beach with our bald heads.” “Promise?” she asked. “Promise,” I replied, thinking it was a small sacrifice (牺牲) as long as it could cheer her and help her recover.
The days and weeks of treatment began to affect her little body. As the doctors had warned, she began to lose her hair. At first, I found some on her clothes and towels. A short time later, I found her hair on the backs of the sofas and chairs she’d been on. Before long, there were masses of hair on her pillow every morning as she awoke from her restless sleep. A few days later, she was finally completely bald.
Her head was very smooth and soft as I held her. It reminded me of that wonderful time when I held her in my arms and was amazed at how lucky I was to have such a beautiful and healthy baby sister. Her bald head was beautiful, but it also showed the signs of her battle with cancer. One afternoon at home, I thought it was time to shave my head.
However, it was then that I began seriously worrying about something. How ugly would I become when I was bald? Would my parents — who always encouraged us to maintain a certain image — scold (责备) me for having my head shaved? Would people, especially my classmates, make fun of me?
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

I was looking at myself in the mirror when my sister approached. Her big, innocent eyes searched my face, filled with both curiosity and a hint of admiration. “Are you really going to do it?” she asked softly, her voice breaking the silence. I took a deep breath, feeling a mix of fear and determination. “Yes, I am,” I replied, forcing a smile. “She clapped her hands and squealed, “We’ll be twins!” The first few strokes felt strange, but with each pass of the razor, I felt lighter, as if I were shedding not just my hair, but also my fears and insecurities.
“It’s beautiful. Please also help shave our heads,” our parents smiled. Their approval warmed my heart, and I could see the love in their eyes as they watched this moment unfold. As we stood in front of the mirror, I realized that our bald heads symbolized more than just a physical change; they represented our unity and strength in facing her battle against cancer. We were not just a family; we were warriors, ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead, side by side.

4.Which of the following best describes Lewis?
