South America has a long and interesting coastline. When it comes to beaches, there are some excellent options to be found across the continent.
Sancho Beach
This beach is an amazing stretch of sand with peaceful waters. The clear waters are perfect for swimming but it is difficult to access. It can only be reached by boat or by climbing down the rocky hillsides on each end, so it isn’t particularly good for younger children or people who are physically challenged.
Vichayito Beach
Just a short distance from the waterfront town of Mancora this lovely beach is often quiet and peaceful, offering some nice shallow water to swim in for little ones. A little further out, the waves pick up, making for fine surfing and windsurfing surroundings, while the charming village offers nice accommodation.
Copacabana Beach
The cold water here means it isn’t an ideal swimming location, but there are good spots for surfing and windsurfing. Various water activities make it a great beach. Visit early, especially in the busy tourist seasons, not only to avoid crowds, but also to gain admittance — visitors will be turned away once the park reaches peak capacity.
Jericoacoara Beach
Located near the city center, this beach is very popular among surfers thanks to its great waves. It isn’t too rough to swim for experienced swimmers, although a slightly rocky seafloor means you should be careful. With large crowds of people, the best time to visit is sunset-arrive early to get a good viewing spot.
21. What may make Sancho Beach difficult to reach?
A. The great waves. B. Its unique location.
C. Lack of boat services. D. Large crowds of tourists.
22. Which beach is the most ideal place for young children to swim?
A. Sancho Beach. B. Vichayito Beach.
C. Copacabana Beach. D. Jericoacoara Beach.
23. What do Copacabana Beach and Jericoacoara Beach have in common?
A. They both appeal to those loving water sports.
B. Tourists may be rejected due to their limited capacity.
C. Tourists should arrive early to get a good viewing spot.
D. They provide perfect swimming options for professionals.

On August 20th, 2024, the Chinese gaming industry reached a milestone with the global release of Black Myth: Wukong, a new AAA action role-playing game developed by Game Science. Within hours of launch, it topped Steam’s most-played single-player list, gaining significant attention on social media.
Black Myth: Wukong draws on Chinese mythologies (神话) and the classic novel Journey to the West. It allows players to assume the role of Sun Wukong and start grand adventures. Inspired by Stephen Chow’s A Chinese Odyssey, the game creates a vivid dreamscape with Chinese scenery, like remote mountains, wild roads and ancient temples. The various demons, gods, and other figures with Chinese-style designs in the game are based on The Classic of Mountains and Seas, breathing new life into the ancient tales of Chinese mythology.
Feng Ji, Game Science founder and CEO, emphasized that the game was created entirely by a Chinese team to bring Chinese stories to the global gaming stage. He said, “The script and artistic concepts always take the lead, harmoniously integrating Chinese stories and classical cultural elements into the game.” He believed that a game’s true value is not determined by its budget or visuals, but by the genuine enjoyment it offers players.
According to the Xinhua News Agency, to create a truly immersive (沉浸式的), world-class game, the game’s production team spent years traveling across China, scanning historical and cultural sites, and integrating them into every game scenes. The game features 36 locations thoroughly modeled after real-world sites, with 27 of them located in Shanxi Province, China, offering players a unique and immersive visual experience.
The game has boosted interest in Shanxi’s cultural heritage. On its launch day, the search volume for Shanxi tourism increased by over 10%. Bookings for trips to Shanxi have doubled since July, and the number of tourists to Shanxi has grown by 50%. Shanxi has rich tourism resources but lacks recognition both domestically and internationally. The game has presented Shanxi’s cultural relics in a pleasing and effective way, arousing people’s interest in the province’s culture and travel.
24. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the game?
A. Its design inspiration. B. Its wide popularity.
C. Its target players. D. Its cultural significance.
25. What is the key to making a truly valuable game according to Feng Ji?
A. Creating high profits for the game company.
B. Integrating Chinese stories into artistic concepts.
C. Designing impressive characters and visual effects.
D. Providing a satisfying experience for players.
26. Which of the following words can best describe the game’s production team?
A. Ambitious and efficient. B. Confident and productive.
C. Devoted and high-standard. D. Experienced and imaginative.
27. How does the game benefit Shanxi Province?
A. By promoting its cultural tourism.
B. By improving its international status.
C. By calling for the protection of its heritage.
D. By attracting investment to its game industry.

People are already paying more and more for food due to global warming — and rising temperatures will drive food prices a lot higher in the next decade. According to a study by the European Central Bank, by 2035, higher temperatures alone will be pushing up worldwide food prices by between 0.9% and 3.2% every single year.
To find out how this is affecting food prices, Maximilian Kotz at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and his colleagues examined data on the monthly prices and weather conditions in 121 countries between 1996 and 2021. By looking for associations between food prices and factors such as the average monthly temperature, temperature changes, and measures of drought and extreme rainfall, they found a strong link between the average temperature and the food prices a month or so later.
In regions north of 40 degrees, like the latitude (纬度) of New York City and Beijing, warmer-than-average temperatures during winter led to falling food prices. But above-average temperatures increased food prices in summer and at all times in the rest of the world.
“The study didn’t look at why prices rose, but the likely explanation is that extreme heat is reducing yields,’’ Kotz says. “Crops may be drying out on the vine (藤) when they should be being harvested.’’ Factors such as extreme rainfall had less impact on food prices than average temperatures. This may be because flooding tends to be localized, while above-average temperatures can be very widespread.
Other studies have reached similar conclusions. Kotz’s team then went further by investigating how food prices could change based on average temperature rises in climate model prediction. In the worst situation, global food inflation (食品通胀) due to climate change goes over 4% per year by 2060. “We need to be aware of the fact that climate change brings huge new challenges for food security,’’ says Kotz. “Warming-fueled extreme weather is increasingly affecting food production around the world. If farmers don’t adapt their practices to better cope with rising temperatures, the losses will become more serious.’’
28. What does the study focus on?
A. The impact of climate change on food prices.
B. The factors in the rising living costs.
C. The effects of natural disasters on food production.
D. The comparison of food prices in different regions.
29. How did researchers reach their conclusions?
A. By conducting a survey among farmers. B. By referring to previous studies.
C By tracking some cities for years. D. By analyzing a mass of data.
30. What is the main reason for the rising food prices according to Kotz?
A. Frequent rainfall. B. Extreme high temperature.
C. The increasing demand for crops. D. The influence of trade policies.
31. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. To call on people to pay attention to food security.
B To urge farmers to take actions to deal with the climate issue.
C. To predict the loss caused by the heat wave.
D. To explain the situation of global food inflation.
D
Many concepts that are central to the human experience are abstract, such as relationships, ideas, and time — things we can't directly see or touch. We commonly use concrete language to talk and think about these things, often through metaphors(隐喻).
Using metaphors is far more than a poetic device of factual statements. A study conducted at Purchase College found that metaphors can frame people's perspectives, thereby shaping their reasoning and subsequent actions. For example, describing the effort to stop climate change as a “war” rather than a “race” caused people to feel more urgency about reducing emissions.
Another example is the lightbulb (灯泡) metaphor commonly used to describe new ideas, suggesting that new thoughts appear suddenly like a light switch being turned on. However, this metaphor implies that new ideas come effortlessly and are accessible only to a few geniuses, such as Isaac Newton, who supposedly developed his theory of gravity from a sudden insight about a falling apple. It may lead people to question their capability to generate news ideas, and as a behavioral consequence, people may underestimate the role of hard work and continuous learning in bringing about change.
An alternative way to describe ideas is by comparing new thoughts to seeds that fall on fertile ground and — if cared for — will grow and develop over time. Different from the lightbulb metaphor, the seed metaphor implies an understanding that generating new ideas is a laborious process, which requires time and effort. It also suggests that anybody can be the cultivator of ideas as long as they put their mind to it.
The subtle effects of metaphors show how powerful language can be, even though we often don't realize it. Who'd have thought a simple use of a lightbulb metaphor could profoundly affect how we understand the concept of innovation? Given the nature of our metaphorical minds, it is worth asking: are our metaphors suitable? We owe it to ourselves and others to use metaphors appropriately. These choices — conscious or not — can be constructive or destructive.
32. What does the study find about metaphors?
A. They make language more poetic. B. They help clarify abstract concepts.
C. They may cause conflicts between people. D. They can shape people's minds and behavior.
33. What does the underlined word “underestimate” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Realize. B. Overlook. C. Emphasize. D. Acknowledge.
34. How does the seed metaphor differ from the lightbulb metaphor?
A. It stresses the importance of natural talent. B. It simplifies the process of cultivating new ideas.
C. It leads to people's doubt about their creativity. D. It indicates consistent efforts of individuals.
35. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To call on people to use metaphors properly.
B. To present the potential limitations of metaphors.
C. To reveal the difficulty of understanding metaphors.
D. To urge people to reflect on the concept of innovation.

I’m Tia, a passionate teenage girl, living next door to the corner of 71st Street. It’s my corner. Most folks find there’s nothing there, just an empty lot. But to me, it’s like a wide-open treasure box. Stepping into it, I feel like leaping into a sea of green. The tall grass, probably just weeds, with butterflies gathering around, smells clean and fresh, and I wonder why I’m the only one who’s thankful for this place.
One evening, Mama said, “Tia, the city wants to turn that comer of yours into a parking lot.” I stopped in my tracks. “No! They can’t do that!”
“Tia, you have to make them see what you see. Make some noise about it. No one ever got any place by sitting back and staying quiet.” That night, I lay awake thinking for a long time. “I’ve got to do something.”
Early the next morning I dragged a chair down to the corner with a big cardboard on which I’d painted “No Parking Lot! Save Our Nature” in large letters. I sat down and waited. Most people passed by, paying no attention to me. My friend Tanya asked me what I was doing, and I told her. Then came Mrs. DiRisio, a beauty shop owner, who angrily waved her hand at my sign, saying. “My customers need a place to park. You go home, little girl.” But I didn’t move. Then I noticed a woman down the street taking pictures of my corner. She walked over to me, smiling, “I’m Sara Bennett. Can I talk to you?” I nodded. I knew I needed to make some noise. I started talking, and Ms. Bennett scribbled on a notepad. “A walking path would be nice, maybe a vegetable garden. And a bench, so people could sit down and listen to the birds singing.” I was surprised at myself, at how many ideas I’d got for this corner.
The next morning, my brother burst into my room with a morning paper. “Fighting for Nature on the Corner of 71st” was the title of the article, and along with it was a picture of me!
After breakfast my brother, Mama and I dragged our chairs and signs back to the corner.

M: I suppose you’re right, Mum. The field trip starts at half past eight. I’ll set my alarm clock for a quarter past six so that I have plenty of time to go to school.
W: Good idea. It would be terrible if the monitor of the class arrived late for the first outdoor activity this term, wouldn’t it?
M: Don’t worry, Mum. I’ll get up as soon as I hear the alarm.

A. A health report. B. A health insurance plan. C. A medical examination.
【答案】17. C 18. C 19. A 20. B
【解析】
【原文】M: Most universities and colleges in the United States have a health insurance plan for international students. It generally costs around $300 a year now. You may think it is a waste of money, but if you have even a small medical problem, the insurance will help you to pay the bills. So, you should buy a medical insurance when you arrive at the university. I am sure the International Students Office will help you with that. Private doctors are the standard form of the medical care in America, but there are also college clinics, public and private clinics, etc. The quality of medical care can be different in these different places, so it would be better if you ask an American friend for advice before going to see a doctor. Before you leave China, I suggest you have a medical examination. If there is something wrong, you can have it cured in your own country. Don’t forget to take your personal and family health records abroad with you. They provide important and useful information if you need to go to the hospital. But remember to take good care of yourself. Don’t work too hard.

Just a short distance from the waterfront town of Mancora, this lovely beach is often quiet and peaceful, offering some nice shallow water to swim in for little ones.
D They provide perfect swimming options for professionals.

C. By tracking some cities for years.
B. To urge farmers to take actions to deal with the climate issue.
C. To predict the loss caused by the heat wave.
D. To explain the situation of global food inflation.

【答案】32. D 33. B 34. D 35. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了比喻在生活中的应用,以及其带来的影响。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“A study conducted at Purchase College found that metaphors can frame people’s perspectives, thereby shaping their reasoning and subsequent actions.(Purchase学院进行的一项研究发现,比喻可以塑造人们的视角,从而塑造他们的推理和随后的行动。)”可知,比喻可以塑造人们的思想和行为。故选D项。
【33题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三段“Another example is the lightbulb (灯泡) metaphor commonly used to describe new ideas, suggesting that new thoughts appear suddenly like a light switch being turned on. However, this metaphor implies that new ideas come effortlessly and are accessible only to a few geniuses, such as Isaac Newton, who supposedly developed his theory of gravity from a sudden insight about a falling apple. It may lead people to question their capability to generate news ideas, and as a behavioral consequence, people may underestimate the role of hard work and continuous learning in bringing about change.(另一个例子是灯泡比喻,通常用于描述新想法,表明新想法突然出现,就像电灯开关被打开一样。
根据第四段中“Different from the lightbulb metaphor, the seed metaphor implies an understanding that generating new ideas is a laborious process, which requires time and effort. It also suggests that anybody can be the cultivator of ideas as long as they put their mind to it.(与灯泡的比喻不同,种子的比喻暗示了一种理解,即产生新的想法是一个艰苦的过程,需要时间和精力。它还表明,任何人都可以成为思想的培养者,只要他们用心去做。)”可知,将一个种子培育成长需要长期的关注和养护,种子比喻的显著特征是它表明个人的持续努力。故选D项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Given the nature of our metaphorical minds, it is worth asking: are our metaphors suitable? We owe it to ourselves and others to use metaphors appropriately. These choices — conscious or not — can be constructive or destructive.(考虑到我们比喻思维的本质,我们有必要问:我们的比喻合适吗?为了自己和他人,我们有责任恰当地使用比喻。这些选择——有意识的或无意识的——可能是建设性的,也可能是破坏性的。)”可知,作者在最后一段提出问题,告诫读者要恰当合理地使用比喻,显然目的是呼吁人们正确使用比喻。故选A项。

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:

Paragraph 2: A year later, the sign on the corner made it official.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Possible version:
To my amazement, I saw some familiar figures coming towards us. My friend Tanya and her family, each carrying a chair, joined us! “Tia, You’ve got some good ideas for this corner. We need a little nature around here.” More and more neighbors showed up, waving signs and making noise, including Mrs. DiRisio. Mom inspired me to make a speech to the city call. I did so days later. “If this is the last little bit of nature in our neighborhood,” I spoke, ”doesn’t it make sense to try and save it? ” Everyone applauded at the end of my speech.
A year later, the sign on the corner has made it official. Now we’ve got a walking path that curves and winds its way through the 71st Street Nature Preserve. We’ve got a stone bench and plans for a vegetable garden. School groups come here to collect leaves and study the insects and birds. Folks come here to walk, run or just sit, talking, laughing and listening to birds singing. My corner isn’t just mine anymore, but I’m more than happy to share it.
