It was his wish that I should be a lawyer but my head began to be filled very early with thoughts of travel, and I would be pleased with nothing but going to sea. One day, being at Hull, I met one of my friends who was about to sail for London in his father’s ship, and he invited me to go with him. Without telling my father, I went on board. On the way to London, our ship was destroyed by a storm, and we almost lost our lives. I went on foot to London, where I met with the master of a large ship who did business with countries on the coast of Africa. He offered me a chance to go with him, which I gladly accepted. A great storm came up, and the ship was tossed (颠簸) about for many days. We did not know where we were. Suddenly we hit a bank of sand, and the sea broke over the ship in such a way that we could not hope to have her hold many moments without breaking into pieces. So we used a boat instead. After we had been driven four or five miles, a mountainous wave (波浪) hit us so hard that it overturned the boat at once. I swam well but the waves were so strong that I was pushed against a rock with such force, and left unconscious (失去知觉的). But I recovered a little before the waves returned, and, running forward, got to the mainland safely. But I never regretted my decisions. 24. What did the author want to do most when he was young? A. To visit Africa. B. To sail the seas. C. To practice law. D. To move to London. 25. What happened to the author on the way to London? A. He met a businessman from another country. B. His ship hit a bank of sand and was broken over by the sea. C. His ship was badly damaged by a storm and he nearly got killed. D. He and the master of a large ship went to London by boat at last. 26. What does the author mainly show in the last paragraph? A. What he did on the ship. B. What he experienced at sea. C. How he became a man of wealth. D. How he got to know a ship master. 27. What can we learn about the author from the text? A. He could not swim at all. B. He made his father very proud. C. He was not afraid of taking risks. D. He did business with African countries. C Natural disasters take many different forms and can happen without warning. Earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, droughts, typhoons, and hurricanes are all natural disasters. The earthquake of 26 December 2004 led to one of the worst natural disasters in living memory. It was a very big underwater quake and happened in the Indian Ocean. This caused a huge tsunami to cross the Indian Ocean. It destroyed coastlines and communities and brought death and destruction (破坏) to many people. The survivors needed fresh water, food and shelter as well as medical help. People from all over the world collect money to help them. The surface of the Earth has not always looked as it does today; it is moving continuously although very slowly and has done so for billions of years. This is one reason for earthquakes, when one part of the Earth crashes with another. Scientists can predict (预测) where this might happen and the area between plates is called a fault line (断层线). However, earthquakes do not always happen on fault lines, which is why they are so dangerous and unpredictable. All the disasters are very dangerous and continue to kill thousands of people each year, but they are nowhere near the most dangerous disaster to ever happen on earth. One type of event in the earth’s history has regularly killed millions of beings: asteroid impacts (小行星撞击). About once every million years the Earth is hit by a piece of rock and ice from space large enough to cause large destruction (including earthquakes, volcanoes and ice ages) and sometimes to kill entire species (物种). Sixty-five million years ago more than half the earth’s species were killed by such a disaster, including all the dinosaurs. Disasters on the Earth may seem dangerous, but the biggest danger to humans is likely to come from space. 28. What did the Indian Ocean earthquake cause? A. A typhoon. B. A tsunami. C. A hurricane. D. volcanic eruption. 29. What can scientists predict about earthquakes? A. The possible rate. B. The possible damage. C. The possible place. D. The possible time. 30. Where will the most dangerous natural disaster come from according to the author? A. The volcanoes. B. The ocean. C. Outer space. D. Deep under the surface. 31. What can be the best title for the text? A. How natural disasters happened B. Where natural disasters happen most C. When people should avoid natural disasters D. What kind of natural disasters are most destructive D The three Shenzhou-18 crew members aboard the orbiting (轨道) China Space Station (CSS), Ye Guangfu, Li Cong and Li Guangsu, celebrated the Paris Summer Olympics and China’s 16th National Fitness Day on Thursday. They then continued to copy the actions of Olympic divers. The final event of the space games was “weightlifting (举重)”. At the end of the video, the three sent their best wishes to Team China, encouraging them to accept challenges and go after their dreams. They encouraged the Chinese athletes to go beyond limits, set new records and achieved excellent successes. The Shenzhou-18 crew is more than halfway through a six-month space mission that started with their launch in late April. The wind roared (呼啸) and the rain beat on the roof and windows. Dad was listening to a weather report on the radio, and at the same time Mum was putting their important documents (文件) and disaster supplies into a bag. “Mum, Dad,” said Mary all of a sudden, “I think we have to leave here right away!” “No!” said Dad loudly, “It’s too late! The radio says the city has already been flooded.” “We can drive our car through the floodwater! Let’s just leave! I’m really frightened!” cried Mary. “We can’t do that, honey,” explained Mum, “or the moving water could wash the car away!” Mary walked to the door. She was curious to see how much water there was outside. “Don’t open the door!” shouted Mum and Dad at the same time, “The water may flood in!” Dad moved the dinner table against the door, in case the floodwater forced the door open. Mum waved to Mary to sit on the sofa. “Mary, don’t worry. Everything’s going to be all right,” she said softly, trying her best to comfort Mary. Her voice sounded calm, but Mary could tell she was worried, too. Without saying a single word, Dad walked to the sofa, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. My father was a man of some wealth, able to give the me a good home and send me to school. On the way to London our ship was destroyed by a storm, and we almost lost our lives. A. D. What kind of natural disasters are most destructive 【答案】28. B 29. C 30. C 31. 根据第二段“The earthquake of 26 December 2004 led to one of the worst natural disasters in living memory. Mary was looking through the windows at the endless rain outside. It had been raining non-stop for three days. She had never seen a storm this bad. It was making her anxious and nervous. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. What could they do? 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad made a decision. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally, the rain came to a stop. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad made a decision. They believed that they should stay in the house. They thought it would be really dangerous to try to walk through the water to get to higher ground. “Mary, we’ll have to go upstairs and wait there,” said Mum. “OK, Mum, if that’s what you think is best ...” Mary replied uncertainly. So they went upstairs and waited. Downstairs, water started flooding into the living room and kitchen. All three of them were nervous, but at least they had disaster supplies, including food and drinking water. Finally, the rain came to a stop. But Mary and her family couldn’t leave while the house was still flooded. They listened to the radio and learned that rescue workers in boats were coming to rescue people who were trapped in their homes. They waited for a boat to arrive at their house. Fortunately, about half an hour later, the rescue workers in a boat discovered them and took them to a safe place in time. Their house had been badly damaged, but they were all happy to be still alive.
