When Sam Fisher took his two young sons and their nine-year-old cousin on a hike in the Badlands of North Dakota, he was probably expecting a day of sightseeing and light exercise. However, what he could not have expected was that the three boys chanced upon a fossil (化石) of a juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex (幼年霸王龙), which lived millions of years ago.
The group of amateur paleontologists (古生物学家), including Sam’s sons Liam and Jessin, then seven and ten, were surely excited by their discovery, but also handled the fossil with great care it deserved. Sam sent a photo of the find to his old high school classmate, Dr. Tyler Lyson, a paleontologist and curator of vertebrate paleontology with the Denver Museum of Nature &. Science and asked for advice.
“To me, it looked a bit like a duckbill dinosaur—the second most common dinosaur in these badlands,” Dr. Lyson explained. “It wasn’t until several months later when I really started to examine the photo carefully that I started to have some doubts that it might be part of a Tyrannosaurus Rex.”
The following summer, Dr. Lyson arrived on the site with the family as well as a skilled team to dig out the fossil. Together, they were able to unearth the remains of the teenage Tyrannosaurus Rex, with all parties contributing to the dig. It is rare to find undamaged Tyrannosaurus rex fossils, and even more rare to find the remains of a juvenile.
The fossil, which has since been called “Teen Rex”, is estimated to have been between 12 and 14 years old at the time of death. Even though it was still growing, the dinosaur already weighed 3,500 pounds and was 25 feet long.
Their find was considered as an incredible discovery by the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and will soon be on display at the museum. “By going outside and exploring their passions, these boys have made an incredible dinosaur discovery that advances science and deepens our understanding of the natural world,” said Dr. Lyson.
4. What did Sam Fisher do after he found the fossil?
A. He looked for more of it. B. He posted its photos online.
C. He sent it to the local museum. D. He turned to his classmate for help.
5. How did Dr. Lyson respond to the fossil in the photo in the beginning?
A He contacted a skilled team. B. He examined it with great care.
C. He mistook it for a common one. D. He went to the scene to unearth it.
6. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the fossil?
A. Its exhibition time. B. Its basic information.
C. Its research value. D. Its digging process.
7. What can we learn from Dr. Lyson’s words in the last paragraph?
A. He thought highly of the boys. B. He learned a lot from nature.
C. He took a little light exercise. D. He was disappointed about the fossil.
C
Popular descriptions of body language often focus on the ability to spot lies, or uncover other such negative behaviors. One of those is blinking (眨眼): The idea is that blinking faster indicates a potential lie.
Researchers studied contestants on a TV quiz show and reported on the results in 2023. These demonstrate beautifully the danger in thinking about specific physical responses as “tells”, or indicators of a particular thought or intent.
First of all, people do blink faster under stress. But that simply indicates a stress response, not a declaration of the intent behind the stress. In other words, you might be stressed because you’re trying to recall the truth, a lie, the right answer, or a host of other things.
Moreover, it turns out that blinking also slows when you are thinking hard and can speed up when you are signaling that you are hearing a question or getting ready to give an answer. In other words, it’s a signal of a response to external stimuli (刺激), not a clear indicator of your intent to tell the truth or to lie.
Blinking is like so many other individual bits of body language: It is multi-determined, which means that it can have many reasons. We may cross our arms because we’re defensive— or because we’re tired, cold, or ready to quit. Or because we’re making ourselves comfortable for a long session of playing a game of bridge.
So don’t look to body language for “tells”. Rather than trying to make a list of “tells”, seek to understand people in the world by paying attention to both what they say and how they say it. For example, when your husband or wife runs into the house excited about a raise, you can reliably pick up that something good is going on.
8. According to the text, people may blink faster when they are__________.
A. thinking hard B. recalling something
C. feeling relaxed D. raising a question
9. How does the author support the idea in paragraph 5?
A. By giving an example. B. By analyzing the results.
C. By introducing a concept. D. By mentioning related theories.
10. What is the author’s suggestion for understanding others?
A. Paying attention to similarities. B. Asking open-ended questions.
C. Focusing on their words and behaviors. D. Putting yourself in their shoes.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. How Can People Respond to Stress and Danger?
B. How Can People Really Understand Body Language?
C. Is Blink Rate a Reliable Indicator of Telling the Truth?
D. Is Body Language Literally Useful in Sending Messages?
D
For centuries, human activity has intentionally or unintentionally driven the spread of plant species to areas far outside their native habitat. On average, about 10 percent of non-native species worldwide become invasive (入侵的), often causing large ecological and economic consequences for affected regions.
For the first time, a global team of researchers, led by ETH Zurich, have explored which regions on Earth are most easily influenced by non-native tree invasions. The study, published in the journal Nature, combined human and ecological factors to assess the drivers of tree invasion occurrence and severity across the globe.
The study reveals that being close to human activity — especially sea ports — emerges as a dominant factor driving the likelihood of invasion. Ports handle tonnes of goods including plants or seeds from all corners of the globe. Therefore, the closer a forest is to a port, the higher the risk of invasion.
However, ecological factors determine the severity of invasion. Most importantly, native biodiversity helps to reduce the intensity of these invasions. In diverse forests, when most of the available areas are filled by native species, it becomes harder for non-native tree species to spread.
The ecological strategy of the invading species is also important in determining which types of trees can invade in different regions. In regions with extreme cold or dry conditions, the researchers found that non-native tree species must be functionally similar to native species to survive in these harsh environments. However, in locations with pleasant conditions, non-native trees must be functionally dissimilar to native species in order to survive by functionally differentiating themselves. In this way, the non-native species avoid intense competition with native trees for important resources such as space, light, nutrients, or water.
The findings have direct relevance for efforts to manage ecosystems in the fight against biodiversity loss across the globe. A large group of researchers took part in the study and collected valuable data. Without the incredible cooperation of scientists around the world this global angles of view would not have been possible.
12. What does the author want to show by mentioning sea ports?
A. The human impact on invasive species. B. Their importance in delivering plants.
C. Their contribution to economic growth. D. The specific distribution of native species.
13. What helps lessen the pressure from the invasion of non-native species?
A. Putting them to dry environments. B. Trying to decrease their nutrients.
C. Removing them to cold conditions. D. Keeping the native species diverse.
14 What does the underlined word “harsh” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Secure. B. Tough. C. Urban. D. Small.
15. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. It is difficult to cooperate with others. B. It is challenging to manage ecosystems.
C. The researchers are unwilling to collect data. D. The findings of the study don’t come easily.

When I was ten, I was very shy. Kids, adults, pretty much everyone made me nervous. But then one day, one single ride on a school bus changed that.
The school bus that day was crowded, hot and smelly. The windows were all rolled up—bus driver’s order— it was simply raining too hard to have them down. I sat alone as usual, speaking to no one. Over and over, I carefully wiped a small circle through the cloud on my window so that I could see the rushing water outside.
The bus stopped, waiting for an accident to clear. As I sat quietly, waiting and watching, I saw a cat across the street on the other side of the road. He was all wet and didn’t seem to know where to go. I wanted to go get the cat, but I knew Mrs. Foster would never allow me off the bus. It was against the rule to even stand up. I thought that if I pointed out the poor cat, the other kids would probably laugh at me.
When I wiped the window clear again, I could see the cat struggling in what seemed to be a dirt y river. My heart was racing, and tears were rolling down my cheeks. The bus began to move forward. The cat’s eyes locked on to mine. He was begging for help. I looked around, but nobody else seemed to have noticed that.
When Mrs. Foster shouted for us to sit well, I couldn’t help standing up, directly disobeying her. “Mrs. Foster!” I cried. Every single person on the bus stopped talking and looked at me. “A cat. There’s a cat outside,” I said. “If we don’t help him, he’ll drown!” I held out a shaking hand and pointed. Mrs. Foster, to my amazement, didn’t shout at me. Nor did the other kids laugh at me. Instead, she pulled the bus to the side of the busy road. “Children,” she said seriously. “No one is to leave this bus.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Then she rushed out into the traffic and rain.

A. He contacted a skilled team.
D 5. C 6. B 7. A

Science and asked for advice.( Sam把这一发现的照片发给了他的高中老同学Tyler Lyson博士。
根据第三段“To me, it looked a bit like a duckbill dinosaur—the second most common dinosaur in these badlands(对我来说,它看起来有点像鸭嘴恐龙——这片荒地上第二常见的恐龙)”以及“It wasn’t until several months later when I really started to examine the photo carefully that I started to have some doubts that it might be part of a Tyrannosaurus Rex.( 直到几个月后,当我真正开始仔细研究这张照片时,我才开始怀疑它可能是雷克斯暴龙的一部分。)”
根据第五段中“The fossil, which has since been called “Teen Rex”, is estimated to have been between 12 and 14 years old at the time of death. Even though it was still growing, the dinosaur already weighed 3,500 pounds and was 25 feet long.( 这具化石后来被称为“Teen Rex”,据估计,它在死亡时年龄在12到14岁之间。尽管这只恐龙还在生长,但它已经重达3500磅,身长25英尺。)”可知,本段主要讲述了这具被称为“Teen Rex”的化石的基本信息,包括它死亡时的年龄、体重和长度等。因此,本段主要告诉我们关于这具化石的基本信息。故选B。

C Focusing on their words and behaviors.
B 9. A 10. C 11. C
根据第三段“First of all, people do blink faster under stress. But that simply indicates a stress response, not a declaration of the intent behind the stress. In other words, you might be stressed because you’re trying to recall the truth, a lie, the right answer, or a host of other things.(首先,人们在压力下眨眼的速度更快。但这仅仅表明了一种压力反应,而不是对压力背后意图的声明。换句话说,你可能会因为试图回忆真相、谎言、正确答案或许多其他事情而感到压力。)”可知, 当人们回忆某事时, 在压力下眨眼的速度更快即你可能会因为试图回忆真相、谎言、正确答案或许多其他事情而感到压力。故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Blinking is like so many other individual bits of body language: It is multi-determined, which means that it can have many reasons. We may cross our arms because we’re defensive— or because we’re tired, cold, or ready to quit. Or because we’re making ourselves comfortable for a long session of playing a game of bridge.(眨眼就像许多其他单独的肢体语言一样:它是多重决定的,这意味着它可能有很多原因。我们抱起双臂可能是因为我们在自卫,或者是因为我们累了,冷了,或者准备放弃。或者是因为我们想让自己在长时间的桥牌游戏中感到舒适。)”可知, 在本段中通过举例支持了自己的观点,即“交叉双臂”这一肢体语言可能有多种原因。作者列举了防御、疲劳、寒冷、准备放弃以及为了使自己长时间玩桥牌游戏更舒适等多种可能的原因,因此是通过举例来支持自己的观点的。故选A。
根据最后一段“Rather than trying to make a list of “tells”, seek to understand people in the world by paying attention to both what they say and how they say it.(不要试图列出“告诉”的清单,而是要通过注意他们说什么和他们说话的方式来理解世界上的人。)”
根据第一段中“One of those is blinking (眨眼): The idea is that blinking faster indicates a potential lie.( 其中之一就是眨眼:眨眼速度越快,暗示着你可能在说谎。)” 因此,最适合作为文章标题的是C选项“Is Blink Rate a Reliable Indicator of Telling the Truth?(眨眼速度是否是判断说真话的可靠指标?)”
Without the incredible cooperation of scientists around the world, this global angles of view would not have been possible.
14. What does the underlined word “harsh” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Secure. B. Tough. C. Urban. D. Small.
15. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. It is difficult to cooperate with others. B. It is challenging to manage ecosystems.
C. The researchers are unwilling to collect data. D. The findings of the study don’t come easily.
A 13. D 14. B 15. D
根据第三段“The study reveals that being close to human activity — especially sea ports — emerges as a dominant factor driving the likelihood of invasion. Ports handle tonnes of goods including plants or seeds from all corners of the globe. Therefore, the closer a forest is to a port, the higher the risk of invasion. 故选A。
根据第四段“However, ecological factors determine the severity of invasion. Most importantly, native biodiversity helps to reduce the intensity of these invasions. In diverse forests, when most of the available areas are filled by native species, it becomes harder for non-native tree species to spread.( 然而,生态因素决定了入侵的严重程度。最重要的是,本地生物多样性有助于减少这些入侵的强度。在多样化的森林中,当大部分可用区域被本地物种填满时,非本地树种就很难传播。)”可知, 生态因素决定了入侵的严重程度,而最重要的是,本地生物多样性有助于减少这些入侵的强度。故选D。
【14题详解】
词义猜测题。根据画线词句“In regions with extreme cold or dry conditions, the researchers found that non-native tree species must be functionally similar to native species to survive in these harsh environments.( 在极端寒冷或干燥的地区,研究人员发现,非本地树种必须在功能上与本地树种相似,才能在这些……环境中生存。)”及画线词后“However, in locations with pleasant conditions, non-native trees must be functionally dissimilar to native species in order to survive by functionally differentiating themselves. (然而,在条件宜人的地方,非本地树种必须在功能上与本地树种不同,才能通过功能分化生存。)”可知,在极端寒冷或干燥的地区,研究人员发现外来树种必须在功能上类似于本地物种才能在这些严酷的环境中生存。因此,“harsh”指的是环境条件的艰难或严酷。故画线词的意思和B选项“Tough(艰难的)”最为接近。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“A large group of researchers took part in the study and collected valuable data. Without the incredible cooperation of scientists around the world, this global angles of view would not have been possible.( 一大批研究人员参与了这项研究,并收集了有价值的数据。

故填who。
My father is a physicist、并列连词and,且空后名词astronomer为元音音素开头的单词,故此处填不定冠词an,表示泛指。故填an。
故填their。
根据句意和空后“to the previous’ cosmic dark ages”可知,此处填介词from;固定搭配“from… to… ”表示“从……到……”。故填from。
故填To achieve。

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Then she rushed out into the traffic and rain.

“I can help to find whether he has a family,” I promised to Mrs. Foster.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then she rushed out into the traffic and rain. I watched nervously as she approached the cat. To my relief, she managed to pick it up and bring it back to the bus. Everyone on the bus cheered and clapped. Mrs. Foster wrapped the cat in a towel and dried it off. “We’ll find a home for this little guy,” she said.
“I can help to find whether he has a family,” I promised to Mrs. Foster. When we got to school, I took the cat to the office and made some posters. I put them up around the school, hoping someone would recognize the cat. A few days later, a family came forward and said the cat was theirs. They thanked us for saving it. That day, I learned that sometimes it’s okay to step out of my comfort zone and do something to help others. It felt really good to make a difference.
