At last, Ham declared, “Let us put it to the test: Let us both go to some far country and try whether wealth or effort is more successful.” Jim agreed to this plan and they fixed a day for starting. Then they both went home and collected some money and started off early one morning. After a time, they came to a certain country where Ham suggested that they should look for employment. But Jim did not like the notion of becoming a servant and he said that he would live on the money which he had brought with him, which would last for a year or two. “You may do as you like,” answered Ham, “but for my part, I must look for work.” So he went to a village and found employment as a teacher in a school while his friend rented a house and started making various friends, eating, drinking and having fun all day. One year later, Ham earned enough money, built a beautiful house and also got married. However, Jim had already spent all his money, and his friends who indulged in wine and meat also left him. C Have you ever imagined an insect-inspired robot, which weighs less than a gram, could one day help out in surgery Scientists have designed this small, “insect-bot” called mCLARI that can control and even change its body shape as it travels in different environments to fit through gaps. It’s 2 centimeters long, weighs less than 0.97 grams and can travel at a speed of 6 centimeters per second. It’s the smaller, faster replacement to CLARI, which was designed by the same team. “Because of the robot’s small size and ability to change shape, we expect usage of this technology in four important areas,” the lead author Kaushik Jayaram said. These include disaster (灾害) response , check on high-value objects, environmental monitoring and medical treatment. “In the long term, we hope such robots will be used more widely in moving through human bodies and performing surgeries that can’t be easily done at present,” Jayaram said. With mCLARI, Jayaram’s team is moving closer to creating robots that can fit in different environments—just like the insects they’re inspired by. The mCLARI robot has four legs and can move in narrow spaces by changing between running forward and side-to-side and can use different speeds in human bodies. Its legs are joined to its body through joints (关节), which enables mCLARI to change its body shape based on the environment it is in. For example, its legs can be lengthened up to 50% in certain spaces. As follow-up work, the scientists want to give mCLARI more power and sensing ability while helping the surgeries. “We are also excited about understanding the effect of shape change on improving functions of robots,” Jayaram said. “And this is sure a great one-step forward of the technology. The robot will have entered the market by 2025 and will bring greater benefits to mankind, especially in medical treatment.” 28.What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A.Possible application fields of the robot. B.Different types of the robot. C.Several important features of the robot. D.Working process of the robot. 29.Which of the following can best describe mCLARI? A.Valuable but uncontrollable. B.Modern but high-cost. C.Heavy and time-consuming. D.Advanced and effective. 30.What is Jayaram’s attitude towards the robot? A.Worried. B.Positive. C.Doubtful. D.Uninterested. 31.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A.Jayaram: A Scientist Studying Robot Intelligence B.mCLARI Is Already Widely Available in the Market C.CLARI: A Robot Invented by Inspiration from the Insects D.A Tiny Shape-changing Robot Will Help Perform Surgeries D Roadkill is a worldwide problem. Every year: About 340 million birds are killed on roads in the United States; around 9 million mammals (哺乳动物) of average size are killed on Brazilian roads; and China is no exception. To deal with this, a study of “roadkill” has been conducted by Professor Li Zhongqiu and his team from Nanjing University. The study was conducted in Nanjing, which has more than 9,700 km of well-built roads. Li and his teammates ran 26 roadkill monitoring (监测) activities over 224.27 km of roads, totaling 5,831 km during the research period. The nine roads chosen for the team’s research were monitored every two weeks over the course of a year. The team recorded a total of 293 dead bodies. Among them, birds made up nearly half the total. As a main bird species in East China, blackbirds are usually attracted by flies or other insects to dead bodies of roadkill along the roads. “Specifically, cats, dogs and blackbirds were the three most commonly killed animals,” Li said. “This may be due to the large number of homeless cats and dogs in city areas. Pets thrown out of their homes are more likely to run into traffic.” According to the report, roadkill happened a lot from May to September. The animal’ increased reproductive (生殖) activity in summer and autumn is a possible reason. Besides, roadkill issues also topped in November and January. This may be due to the need to search for food during winter when food resources are few, Li said. “There is no doubt that roadkill has contributed to the decrease of animal populations and must be taken seriously,” Li said. “We call on related departments to take measures such as speed limits and necessary traffic controls during top periods of animal activities. For animals such as cats and dogs that usually use the roads, fences can prevent them from entering traffic.” 32.What is paragraph 1 of the text mainly about? A.The purpose of the study. B.The method of the study. C.The result of the study. D.The background of the study. 33.How often were the chosen roads monitored during a research year? A.Once every two weeks. B.Once a week. C.Three times every two weeks. D.Twice a week. 34.What is the possible reason why roadkill accidents happen the most in November and January? A.Large animal birth rate. B.Busier traffic. C.Few traffic controls. D.Animals’ demand for food. 35.What can policymakers do to reduce cat roadkill incidents according to Professor Li? A.Having speed limits. B.Taking traffic controls. C.Building fences. D.Setting warning signs. Ways To Maintain A Healthy Lifestyle There was a time when physical fitness alone was considered important in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. 36 Here are some ways to help you focus on both. I prefer to have something salty, or even bitter, such as soda water. I’m not a big fan of chocolate, or cakes. M: That’s a pity. I have a big bar of chocolate in my bag, and I was thinking of sharing it with you. W: Oh, OK. I can take some. I haven’t eaten anything the whole day. I feel tired and sleepy …What chocolate is it? M: It’s called Milka, and it originated in Switzerland. It’s my sister’s favorite chocolate. My father bought it from the airport yesterday. W: Great. Thanks. Wow, it’s so tasty! I like it! Do you think it’s possible to find it in other shops around town? 17.What is an advantage of learning idioms (习语) according to the speaker? A.It can improve your English test scores. Do you remember what we talked about last week? Yes, British food culture. Today, our topic is English idioms (习语). English idioms, proverbs, and expressions are important parts of everyday English. They come up all the time in both written and spoken English. Because idioms don’t always make sense literally, you need to be familiar with the meaning and usage of each idiom. It may seem like a lot of work, but learning idioms is also very interesting. What’s more, learning to use common idioms and expressions will help you sound like a native speaker, so it’s a good idea to master some of these expressions. For example, do you know what the meaning of “dog days” is? It means very hot days. The phrase “hold your horse” means waiting and being patient. “Pig out” means eating a lot of things. “Nest egg” means the money saved for the future. Can you find the similarity of these idioms? Today, those idioms are connected with animals. Next Friday, we will talk about idioms about colors. I hope you have a happy weekend! A For the charm of Italy’s rich history and breathtaking landscapes, we have a great package for you. The poor man’s son was named Ham, and the rich man’s son was named Jim. They had been in the same school together since childhood and became good friends. One day, the two youths began a discussion as to whether wealth or effort was more powerful. Jim said that wealth was most important, while Ham declared for effort. Scientists have designed this small, “insect-bot” called mCLARI that can control and even change its body shape as it travels in different environments to fit through gaps. A.Jayaram: A Scientist Studying Robot Intelligence B.mCLARI Is Already Widely Available in the Market C.CLARI: A Robot Invented by Inspiration from the Insects D.A Tiny Shape-changing Robot Will Help Perform Surgeries 【答案】28.A 29.D 30.B 31.D 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据文章第三段““Because of the robot’s small size and ability to change shape, we expect usage of this technology in four important areas,” the lead author Kaushik Jayaram said. 【答案】32.D 33.A 34.D 35.C 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了动物道路死亡的现象,为了解决这个问题,南京大学的李忠秋教授和他的团队进行了一项关于“路杀动物”的研究。 32.主旨大意题。根据第一段“Roadkill is a worldwide problem. The drainage shaft(排水井)! His fingers clawed helplessly at the wet soil as he fell. He was falling into darkness, his body struggling against the walls of the shaft. 20 feet away, Allen heard a loud cry. “I’m climbing down,” he told Bobby. With his torch(手电筒)under his arm, Allen slid rapidly down the pipe. “I’m coming, Steve!” he yelled several times. No answer. As Allen slid towards the bottom of the mine shaft, he saw Steve floating face down in the water. He slipped his arms round Steve and patted him on the back. Water came out of Steve’s mouth continuously. “I’m going to die, right?” Steve said in a weak voice. “No way,” Allen said. “Bobby’s going for help.” At 3: 20 pm, Bobby stepped through the door of the local fire station, a mile and a half from the top of the canyon(峡谷).“My friends. Trapped,” he said, out of breath. “Last Chance Mine. You have to hurry!” One hundred miles away, Bob Trussell’s phone rang at 5 pm. Leader of the Lassen County Search and Rescue Team, Trussell, 44, had the only team in northern California trained to lead mine rescues. “I’ll pull together my team,” he said, “but it’ll take some time to get there.” An hour later, he was leading a line of six trucks towards Paradise Pines. It was the light from a headlamp! The rescue team had arrived. Allen quickly signaled with his own torch, trying to pinpoint their exact location. A few minutes later, the team found them. Trussell and his team placed Steve on a backboard and stretcher and slowly lifted him up the shaft. Allen followed closely behind. It was a difficult ascent, but they eventually made it to the top. Steve was rushed to the hospital at once. The doctors discovered that he had a fractured arm and poor physical condition. They also found that he had contracted a severe illness after being submerged in the cold water for so long. It was a close call, but Steve was going to be okay. Though shaken up by the experience, Steve and Allen were grateful for the quick response of the rescue team. Inspired by their bravery, Steve decided to become a volunteer for the Lassen County Search and Rescue Team, and he has gone on to help rescue others in similar situations. The incident taught him to never underestimate the power of nature and to always be prepared for the unexpected. 词汇激活 行为类 ①发现:find/locate/discover ②.放置:put/lay ③.淹没:submerge/drown/sink 情绪类 ①.感谢:be grateful/show his gratitude ②.鼓舞:inspired/encouraged 【点睛】[高分句型1]. The poor man’s son was named Ham, and the rich man’s son was named Jim. They had been in the same school together since childhood and became good friends. One day, the two youths began a discussion as to whether wealth or effort was more powerful. Jim said that wealth was most important, while Ham declared for effort. Hungry and sorrowful, he went to Ham and said, “My dear friend, regarding the question of ‘wealth or effort is more important’, I think I’ve already had the answer.” 24.What can we learn about the young men from the first two paragraphs? C Have you ever imagined an insect-inspired robot, which weighs less than a gram, could one day help out in surgery (外科手术)? Scientists have designed this small, “insect-bot” called mCLARI that can control and even change its body shape as it travels in different environments to fit through gaps. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Ways To Maintain A Healthy Lifestyle There was a time when physical fitness alone was considered important in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. 36 Here are some ways to help you focus on both. 原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究!学科网(北京)股份有限公司1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
