Love traveling? Enjoy adventure? Here are some incredible destinations for your next expedition. Could you dare to take on any of them?
Antarctica
With a population estimated at somewhere between 1,000 and 4,000 people, the world’s fifth largest continent is a land of extremes — the coldest and driest continent on the planet. Travelers can only reach it by ice-strengthened vessels made for sailing through the rough seas. Though known for its breath-taking scenery, visitors who trek through the wilderness must be well-prepared or accompanied by a tour operator who knows the area well.
Mawsynram, India
This Indian town receives an average of 11 metres of rainfall every year. In 1985, the Guinness Book of World Records dubbed it the wettest place on earth after it saw 25 metres of rain in a single year. Plagued by a subtropical climate and monsoons, Mawsynram is both a difficult place to live and an interesting trip for tourists.
Mount Thor, Canada
At 1,675 metres tall, Mount Thor is not the world’s highest peak, but it is the steepest. As the most famous summit in Canada, Mount Thor is made of pure granite (岗岩), with a 1250-metre vertical drop and an average angle of about 105 degrees. Despite the fact that the mountain is in a remote area, it’s a popular destination for avid mountain climbers.
Angel Falls, Venezuela
Although Angel Falls is located in an isolated jungle region and is not reached all that easily, it remains one of Venezuela’s top tourist attractions. The falls, which are approximately 979 metres high, including a 807-metre plunge and a 402-metre sloped cascades and rapids, are the tallest waterfall in the world.
21 How can visitors reach Antarctica according to the text?
A. By helicopter. B. By snowmobile. C. By ice-resistant ship. D. By high speed railway.
22 What attracts mountain climbers to Mount Thor?
A. Diverse wildlife. B. Stunning scenery. C. Convenient location. D. Challenging conditions.
23. What do the listed destinations have in common?

B. They are all located in densely populated areas.
C. They are all the world’s most extreme destinations.
D. They are all easily reachable by public transportation.

My neighbors across the street take pride in one of the most striking trees in the neighborhood — a towering oak that is over 75 years old. This year, after a wet, warm summer, leaves were a bit different in my Massachusetts town. And through some combination of events, that glorious oak seemed to have dropped all of its uncountable leaves on a single windy day. I arrived at home that afternoon to find our front walkway, driveway and sidewalk completely blanketed.
My son and I had a great time making a leaf pile for jumping and enjoying pillowy fun. The whole time, I was fascinated by the speed of this year’s leaf drop. Even though I was aware that it was an accident of wind patterns that left all the leaves in our yard, I kept looking up and feeling a rush of awe at the suddenly bare branches that watched quietly over our neighborhood, starting its restful season before setting spring leaf buds.
And I felt thankful for those fallen leaves as I was reminded of my favorite quote from the author and naturalist Hal Borland. He wrote it referencing October, but this year’s later drop had me change the month: “November is the fallen leaf, but it is also a wider horizon more clearly seen. It is the distant hills once more in sight, and the enduring constellations (星座) above them once again.”
When I lay in that pile of dry, crisp leaves and looked up into the oak tree across the street, I felt a clarity and peace that comes along with the inconveniently early sunsets and chilly temperatures of the transition from fall into winter. I could still admire the tree as I had in spring and summer, but I could also see through it, beyond it, to the big sky that blankets us all.
24. What’s unusual this year?
A. Outdoor activities are limited due to heavy winds.
B. A series of special events happened in the neighborhood.
C. The weather is especially cold in winter in Massachusetts.
D. The neighbors’ big tree almost dropped all its leaves within a day.
25. How does the author feel at the suddenly bare branches in Paragraph 2?
A. Anxious. B. Sorrowful. C. Astonished. D. Comfortable.
26. Why are Hal Borland’s lines quoted in Paragraph 3?
A. To express the author’s admiration for the naturalist.
B. To emphasize the importance of getting close to nature.
C. To stress the beauty of the author’s childhood memories.
D. To convey the author’s feelings about the leaf-falling season.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Fall of Massachusetts B. The Beauty of a Newly-bare Tree
C. The Sky Far Beyond D. The Memories of Peace and Beauty

Cars could soon be communicating with each other using 5G to make drivers aware of upcoming hazards (危险), scientists say. The extremely fast mobile internet would allow for rapid information transmission and could make drivers aware of black ice, pot holes or other dangers up ahead.
Several car manufacturers (制造商) are already using 5G in their vehicles, including as a tool to help serve in the generation of self-driving vehicles.
Experts at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) believe the high-speed connection will also improve the reliability and capability of automated vehicles to the point where they will be safer than the manual cars being driven today. They predict the number of road traffic accidents, which according to the World Health Organization account for more than 1.3 million deaths and up to 50 million people injured worldwide every year, will drop really as a result.
Dr Dimitrios Liarokapis, a member of the research group, said, “To have a better idea of what the future will look like, think of having such cars that not only use sensors to scan what’s around them, they can also talk to each other and exchange safety-related information about their surroundings over an area that covers several square miles. With the help of 5G, a vehicle-generated early warning system that reminds drivers is possible within the next few years. Cars that are close enough to the danger area will transmit warning messages to other cars around them using short-range communication technologies, but also to cars further away using 5G, fast and reliably.”
A few manufacturers are already working on connected cars. Of them, Ford told its intention to fit 80 percent of its future vehicles with technology that warns drivers about upcoming road accidents, bad weather and traffic jams.
28. What is the benefit of 5G mentioned in the text?
A. It can improve the safety of automated vehicles.
B. It can help drivers communicate with each other.
C. It can effectively wipe out road traffic accidents.
D. It can help make more profits for the manufacturers.
29. What can we know about the vehicle-generated early warning system?
A. It can get information several miles ahead.
B. It is under research and development at present.
C. It has been proved extremely helpful for driving.
D. It will send messages to drivers a few days earlier.
30. What will be probably continued with the text?
A. Some car manufacturers. B. The advantages when using 5G.
C. Some safety rules when using 5G. D. The sales information of cars with 5G.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. 5G Leaves Drivers Free When They Are Driving
B. 5G Is to Bring Great Convenience to Our Daily Life
C. 5G Has Been Popular with Drivers Around the World
D. 5G Is on the Way to Making “Dialogue” Between Cars
D
A decade ago, I attended a banquet in Guangzhou where the food was exceptional. The bird’s nest soup, made from chicken and possibly ham with dried scallops (干贝), was gentle and slippery. The sea cucumber was rich and sticky, and the fish was sparklingly fresh and steamed to perfection. However, what stood out was the plain white soup of broth (肉汁), served at the end. It was simple, plain, and perfect.
Ending a banquet with soup may seem odd to Westerners, who are used to sweets at the end of meals. But as an English food writer named Fuchsia Dunlop explains in her book Invitation to a Banquet, soup is a unique expression of a chef’s art, much like a singer’s voice. The transparent, almost invisible soup is an ideal conclusion to a banquet, with its luxury and strong flavors.
Invitation to a Banquet is Dunlop’s seventh book. Unlike her other books on Chinese cuisine such as The Food of Sichuan and Revolutionary Kitchen, this one is not a cookbook. Instead, she has chosen 30 dishes from different regions of China to illustrate different aspects of Chinese cuisine and history.
What makes Dunlop’s writing unique is her perspective. She argues that Chinese cuisine is superior (更胜一筹的) not only in taste but also in its ability to incorporate foreign influences while still maintaining its own identity. Furthermore, Dunlop makes an equally compelling case that what Westerners think of as “Chinese food” is neither false nor wrong. It is merely a diasporic (离散的) branch that reflects local tastes and is representative of the cuisine’s diversity. Immigration and adventurousness have made authentic Chinese food more accessible outside China than ever before.
In conclusion, Invitation to a Banquet by Fuchsia Dunlop provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of Chinese cuisine. Through her well-researched book and insightful discussions, she encourages readers to appreciate the complexity and richness of Chinese food.
32. To the author, what is the most memorable dish about the banquet in Guangzhou?
A. A sweet dessert.
B. A bowl of plain white soup.
C. A dish made from expensive ingredients.
D. A fish that was rich and strong-flavoured.
33. What does the underlined word “incorporate” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Include.
B. Reject.
C. Strengthen.
D. Reduce.
34. What is the unique perspective of Chinese cuisine in her book Invitation to a Banquet?
A. Chinese desserts are the highlight of Chinese cuisine.
B. Immigration makes little difference to Chinese dishes.
C. Chinese food is limited to traditional ingredients and flavors.
D. Chinese food is influenced by foreign elements while preserving its own identity.
35. What’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. To introduce a dish.
B. To recommend a book.
C. To share an experience.
D. To compare different cultures.

A Great Way to Teach Children to Take Responsibility
As parents, one of the most important things to teach children to take responsibility is to include chores as a part of their daily routine. In order to make a family function smoothly, every member must contribute. Teaching your children to take responsibility at an early age makes it easier for them to shoulder greater responsibilities as they grow older.
___36___ If your children leave their crayons lying on the table after drawing, picking up those crayons is not a chore. It is cleaning up a mess they have created. ___37___
___38___. For example, if it is to feed the dog every day, make sure the children understand that if they fail in their responsibility, the dog will go hungry.
Make rewards and punishments a part of the lesson. Together decide whether they will be rewarded or not. ___39___ Some parents make their reward a monetary payment, while others choose to reward with certain privileges, such as extra television viewing time.
Children need to be taught that there are punishments for their actions in case of not doing their assigned chores. Decide and agree from the start what the punishment will be.
Teaching your children the importance of contributing to the family is of great importance. ___40___ By taking this step, you have done a wonderful thing for your children by providing them with life skills they can take with them into society.
A. A chore is a specific task a child has been assigned which helps improve the life of the entire family.
B. And what punishment they will receive if a chore isn’t done.
C. Actually you are taking a critical step in empowering them for their future.

Roses are red, violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet, and so are you.
Those words were what one of my new classmates wrote to me in an autograph book (签名簿) when I moved with my family to a new country, feeling extremely lonely.
Having settled in a completely unfamiliar place my father and mother worked day and night to provide for the family, though we were still in debt. I spoke a little English and was sent to a public school. Being ten years old, I was placed in the fourth grade. Some of the children in the class tried to be friendly but I didn’t have time to hang around with them after my lessons because I had to help with the housework and look after my little brothers and sisters.
At the end of the school year all the kids were excited about going to camp, a concept that was quite foreign to me. Also foreign to me were some of the customs the children had. The strangest one was the “autograph book”! It was a blank book, about four by six inches, with pages in different colors. My schoolmates exchanged their autograph books with each other and wrote silly messages on the pages. These messages made no sense to me: “Yours till the kitchen sinks.” “Yours till the horse flies.” “Yours till Niagara falls.”(永远属于你) Teachers and older relatives wrote more serious and practical words like a prayer or wish—I remember something about a “wise owl living in a tree” (少说话多做事的人).
The boy whose desk was next to mine asked me to write a few words in his autograph book. I didn’t know what to say, so I just signed my name. Then he asked if he could write in my autograph book. I explained I didn’t have one, embarrassed and upset.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

B 18. C 19. B 20. C
The famous scientist, Charles Darwin always worked and worried so much that he made himself ill. His wife, Emma, meanwhile, was very clever, and liked art. Not only did she dance beautifully, but she spoke French, German and Italian well, and played the piano skillfully.
Emma Darwin was born Emma Wedgwood — one of eight children from the well-to-do Wedgwood family. Charles was, in fact, her first cousin as his mother had also been a Wedgwood.
Emma dealt well in society, whereas Charles did not. He wasn’t interested in music at all, nor did he have time to read anything but science. However, it was said that Emma made a successful and happy career out of the marriage and gave birth to ten children between the year 1839 and 1856. Her life has been written down in a recently published book called Behind Every Great Man and we are pleased to welcome the author to our radio program today.

21. How can visitors reach Antarctica according to the text?
A. By helicopter. B. By snowmobile. C. By ice-resistant ship. D. By high speed railway.
22. What attracts mountain climbers to Mount Thor?
A. Diverse wildlife. B. Stunning scenery. C. Convenient location. D. Challenging conditions.
23. What do the listed destinations have in common?
A. They are all suitable for family vacations.

D 25. C 26. D 27. B
根据第一段中“that glorious oak seemed to have dropped all of its uncountable leaves on a single windy day (这棵美丽的橡树似乎在一个刮风的日子里掉下了无数的叶子)”可知,今年不同寻常的是邻居的大树几乎在一天之内掉光了叶子。
根据第二段中“I kept looking up and feeling a rush of awe at the suddenly bare branches (我一直向上看,突然光秃秃的树枝让我感到一阵敬畏)”可知,作者对突然光秃秃的树枝感到非常敬畏,C项“astonished吃惊的”符合题意。
根据第三段中引文“November is the fallen leaf, but it is also a wider horizon more clearly seen. It is the distant hills once more in sight, and the enduring constellations (星座) above them once again. (十一月是落叶,但它也是看得更清楚的更广阔的地平线。那是远山又一次出现在眼前,而它们上方的恒久的星座又一次出现)”和最后一段中“I felt a clarity and peace that comes along with the inconveniently early sunsets and chilly temperatures of the transition from fall into winter. I could still admire the tree as I had in spring and summer, but I could also see through it, beyond it, to the big sky that blankets us all. (我感到了一种清澈与宁静,伴随着从秋天到冬天的过渡过程中令人不方便的提前的日落和寒冷的温度。我仍然可以像在春天和夏天一样欣赏这棵树,但我也可以透过它,超越它,看到覆盖我们所有人的广阔天空)”可知,引文契合了作者透过光秃秃的树枝欣赏天空的心境。由此推知,文中提到Hal Borland的话的目的是传达作者对落叶季节的感受。故选D项。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段中“I felt a clarity and peace that comes along with the inconveniently early sunsets and chilly temperatures of the transition from fall into winter. I could still admire the tree as I had in spring and summer, but I could also see through it, beyond it, to the big sky that blankets us all.
C

32. To the author what is the most memorable dish about the banquet in Guangzhou?
B 33. A 34. D 35. B

故选A项。
根据第四段中“What makes Dunlop’s writing unique is her perspective. She argues that Chinese cuisine is superior (更胜一筹的) not only in taste but also in its ability to incorporate foreign influences while still maintaining its own identity.

D. Start by teaching children the difference between a chore and cleaning up after themselves.
E. Teach children the importance of each assignment, and why it matters.
F. Children will not be rewarded at all for merely cleaning up.
G. And if so, what the reward will be for a job well done.
D 37. A 38. E 39. G 40. C
Start by teaching children the difference between a chore and cleaning up after themselves.
A chore is a specific task a child has been assigned which helps improve the life of the entire family.
Teach children the importance of each assignment, and why it matters.
And if so, what the reward will be for a job well done.
C:Actually you are taking a critical step in empowering them for their future.

Yours truly,
Li Hua
Dear Sam,
Knowing that you’ve been addicted to sharing all sorts of photos in WeChat Moment recently, I am kind of worried. Undoubtedly, WeChat makes communication convenient and leisure time colorful. However, there are some potential risks if we overshare. One severe problem is leaking privacy, which may cause economic losses. Besides, oversharing can make others uncomfortable, for they think you are showing off.
Thus, never should we post our personal information, nor should we add strangers to the list of friends without caution. It’s wiser to set aside some time to accompany parents or do something more meaningful, such as doing volunteer activities and reading some interesting books.
Best wishes!
Yours truly,
Li Hua

Roses are red, violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet, and so are you.
Those words were what one of my new classmates wrote to me in an autograph book (签名簿) when I moved with my family to a new country, feeling extremely lonely.
Having settled in a completely unfamiliar place, my father and mother worked day and night to provide for the family, though we were still in debt.

The next day, the boy sitting beside me whispered he wanted to give me something at break.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
That night when I went to bed, I felt sorry for myself. I felt like I didn’t belong. Our family had trouble finding money for rent, food, and clothes in the new country—the idea of writing silly messages on blank pages seemed useless. Yet for a moment, I wanted to be included—I wanted to go to camp. I wanted an autograph book. Thinking about my uncertain future life in this new place and wondering how things would work out for my family, I sighed.
The next day, the boy sitting beside me whispered he wanted to give me something at break. During break, he handed me a small box with a big smile, inside which was a book with multicolored pages—an autograph book-—just like everyone else’s. I turned the pages. Then, in the middle of the autograph book I saw some writing: Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so are you. Welcome to your new country. You are going to like it here. Your friend Sam. I turned the other pages—blue, pink, yellow… thinking what my future held in store may change for the better and things might work out for my family.
