Look at the Earth from space. Why does our planet look so blue? It’s blue because water covers almost three quarters of the Earth’s surface. Water is not just an important part of our planet. It is an important part of our body, too. More than half of our total body weight is water.
Our body loses water whenever we exercise or go to the toilet. That’s why we need to drink plenty of water every day. We drink water. We use it to cook, clean, and carry waste out of our homes. Farmers use it to grow vegetables and crops like rice and corn, factories use it to make products.
Since the 1950s, the amount of water people use has increased by three times. But the water supply hasn’t. Scientists worry that soon there won’t be enough water for us, as well as for the animals and plants. What can we do to help? Use water wisely.
Having enough water isn’t our only problem. We also need it clean.
Right now, ships and factories are putting wastes into seas, rivers and so on. Even chemicals that farmers use are running into rivers and lakes. All this pollution can make the water dangerous to drink. It can also harm fish and other water-living lives.
We must do something to stop pollution. It’s the best way to protect our world’s most valuable natural resource.
59. How many important areas of water are mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
60. What does the underlined sentence “We also need it clean.” mean?
A. We also need water to wash things. B. We also need water that looks clean.
C. We also need to keep water clean. D. We also need to discover clean water.
61. What is the writer’s purpose in writing his passage?
A. To ask people to value water.
B. To advise people to drink more water.
C. To introduce the uses of water.
D. To describe the situation of water supply.

Language shows the environment where we live. We name the things around. Usually, the important things own many specific names, while the less important things only have some general names. So in one culture, people may have a large vocabulary to describe a certain object, while in another culture, such vocabulary is small.
For instance, the Chinese have many words for “rice” and for “family members”. The British use many different expressions for “rain”. Kids growing up on a farm may be able to offer ten different words for “plow”, a farming tool.
In some cultures, there is an amazingly large vocabulary to describe a certain thing. The Inuit have about 100 words for “snow”. For them, snow is so important to life that each of its forms and conditions has to own a name. They divide snow into four main categories (类别), such as snow lying on the ground, snow floating in the sky, snow piling up and snow piles. These different kinds of snow will tell them different weather conditions. The same is true of the Arabians, whose life depends much on camels. In the Arabic language, according to camels’ appearance, characters, drinking behaviors, and the roles they play, there are hundreds of different words for the camel and all of its parts. Snow and camels are far less important in English-speaking cultures, and the single words “snow” and “camel” can usually satisfy their needs. When the needs become more specific, however, they can make up longer phrases to meet the needs: “corn snow” “flying snow” “big camel” “funny camel”, etc.
As we can see, there is a ______ between the words and the ideas of that culture. So it’s not hard to understand that each culture passes on its ideas and thoughts through words.
66. What does Paragraph 2 serve as?
A. Opinions. B. Examples. C. Conclusions. D. Reasons.
67. From the passage, what kind of place do the Inuit live?
A. Cold. B. Dry. C. Hot. D. Wet.
68. What is important to the Arabians’ life?
A. Rain. B. Rice. C. Snow. D. Camels.
69. In English-speaking cultures, how do people show more specific meanings of single words like “snow” and “camel”?
A. By inventing new words. B. By using other sentences.
C. By making up longer phrases. D. By translating from another language.
70. Which of the following words is most suitable for the blank in the last paragraph?
A. difference B. connection C. change D. distance
IX.阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,按要求完成1—5小题。
Most environmental pollution on the earth comes from humans and their inventions, such as cars or plastic. Today, air pollution is mainly caused by waste gases of cars, leading to climate change. Plastics fill our oceans and create a serious health problem to marine animals.
And what about the electric light, one of the greatest human inventions of all time? Electric light can be a beautiful thing. It can guide us home when the sun goes down, keep us safe and make our homes bright. However, it has started to influence the environment. Light pollution, the improper use of outdoor light, is influencing human health and wildlife behavior.
Light pollution is a global problem. Some of the most light-polluted countries in the world are Singapore, Qatar and Kuwait. And the most faraway places on the earth, such as Greenland, Central African Republic and Niue, are in darkness.
Sky glow (人工白昼) is the brightening of the night sky, mostly over cities, because of the electric lights of cars, street lamps, offices, factories, outdoor advertising and buildings.
People living in cities with high levels of sky glow have a hard time seeing many stars at night. Astronomers (天文学家) are especially worried about sky glow pollution, because it prevents them from watching stars. More than 80% of the world’s population live under sky glow.
1、2题完成句子;3—5题简略回答问题。

A. difference B. connection C. change D. distance
【答案】66. B 67. A 68. D 69. C 70. B
【解析】
【导语】本文主要说了语言反映了我们的生活,词与文化是相关的,通过文字传递思想。
【66题详解】

【67题详解】
推理判断题。根据“The Inuit have about 100 words for “snow”.”可知,因纽特人有大约100个单词来表示“雪”。所以他们住在很冷的地方。故选A。
【68题详解】
推理判断题。根据“The same is true of the Arabians, whose life depends much on camels.”可知,阿拉伯人的生活很大程度上依赖于骆驼,故骆驼对他们很重要。故选D。

细节理解题。根据“When the needs become more specific, however, they can make up longer phrases to meet the needs: “corn snow” “flying snow” “big camel” “funny camel”, etc.”可知,当需求变得更具体时,他们可以用更长的短语来满足需求,故选C。
【70题详解】
推理判断题。根据“So it’s not hard to understand that each culture passes on its ideas and thoughts through word.”可知,不难理解,每种文化都是通过文字来传递自己的思想和思想,所以文字和思想之间有联系,故选B。
