Many people just see crows (乌鸦) as a natural clean-up crew—eating insects, dead animals or food in trash cans. But researchers have found that crows are not only playful but also social and intelligent. They use tools to solve problems, and they remember faces for years and copy sounds they hear.
“Crows are always testing their environment,” said John Marzluff, University of Washington professor of wildlife science. “Anything that looks possibly edible, they will taste it.” This trait (特点) has led to interesting scientific findings. Some crows use sticks to gain hard-to-get treats. In other experiments, they learned to drop stones into narrow containers to raise water to a level where they can drink it or reach a floating treat inside.
Crows are social, living in large extended families of more than a dozen birds. Communication is key to their survival. Many calls are used—each having a different message. For example, they have separate warning calls for cats, dogs and people. Some crows even imitate the sounds of other animals and people.
Marzluff did several experiments to determine whether wild crows remember human faces. In one, researchers wearing masks caught seven crows around the campus and banded them. After setting them free, researchers found that regular passers-by got no reaction, but as soon as anyone wearing the same mask passed by, the crows made loud warning calls—even years later. Never be mean to a crow. They not only remember faces but teach their offspring who to beware of (当心). They also remember those who were kind to them and pass that information along, too, often bringing gifts of rocks or other small objects as a thank-you.
8. What does the underlined word “edible” in paragraph 2 mean?

C. Crows are grateful birds. D. Crows have a good memory.
11 Which is a suitable title for the text?
A. Crows Can Use Tools to Get the Food
B. Crows Communicate in Intelligent Ways
C. Cute Crows: They Remember You Forever
D. Clever Crows: They Socialize and Memorize

Social media allow teenagers to create online identities, communicate with others and build social networks. These networks can provide teenagers with valuable support. Teenagers also use social media for entertainment and self-expression. And the platforms can expose teenagers to current events, allow them to communicate across geographic barriers and teach them about different kinds of subjects, including healthy behaviors. However, social media use can also negatively affect teenagers, distracting them, influencing their sleep, and exposing them to bullying (恐吓), rumor (谣言) spreading, untrue views of other people’s lives and peer pressure.
There are steps you can take to encourage responsible use of social media and limit some of its negative effects.
Set reasonable limits. Talk to your teenager about how to avoid letting social media affect his or her activities, sleep, meals or homework. Encourage a bedtime routine that avoids electronic media use, and keep cellphones and iPads out of teenagers’ bedrooms. Set an example by following these rules yourself.
Monitor your teenager’s accounts. Let your teenager know that you’ll be regularly checking his or her social media accounts. You might aim to do so once a week or more. And make sure you follow through.
Explain what’s not OK. Discourage your teenager from gossiping, spreading rumors, bullying or damaging someone’s reputation—online or otherwise. Talk to your teenager about what is appropriate and safe to share on social media.
Encourage face-to-face contact with friends. This is particularly important for teenagers who are vulnerable to social anxiety disorder.
Talk about social media. Talk about your own social media habits. Ask your teenager how he or she is using social media and how it makes him or her feel. Remind your teenager that social media is full of unrealistic images.
If you think your teenager is experiencing signs or symptoms of anxiety or depression related to social media use, talk to your child’s health care provider immediately.
12. How does the author mainly develop the first paragraph?
A. By providing reasons. B. By making comparison.
C. By following the order of importance. D. By raising questions.
13. What’s a better way to avoid being affected by cellphones?
A. Powering them off. B. Putting them in the schoolbag.
C. Keeping them out of bedroom. D. Listening to them instead of watching.
14. What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Warm-hearted. B. Easily hurt. C. Deeply moved. D. Hard-working.
15. Who is the text written for?
A. Teenagers. B. Officials. C. Teachers. D. Parents.

It was exam time at Marc’s school. Every day, their teachers gave them loads of homework and told them the test was very important and that they ought to spare no effort to perform well in it. Everyone followed the teachers’ instructions and made preparations for it, except Marc. He just turned a deaf ear to it. He thought he would rather play football than study.
His mum and dad repeated the importance of revision for exams over and over again. They told him that he should be working hard preparing for the test. But the weather was sunny and he thought he had better things to do.
“Shall we go to the park?” he said to his friend Huck one afternoon. “It’s a nice day. We could play football and kick around.” Huck shook his head. “I’m supposed to review my lessons” he said. “I’m going home to do some math.”
Marc was amazed. “You’d rather do math than play football?”
“Math is important. Besides, my mum says she will buy me a mountain bike if I do well in the math exam.”
“That’s crazy,” said Marc. Huck shrugged (耸肩) and replied, “Wait until I beat you in the test and you will watch me riding past on my mountain bike!”
“You won’t beat me,” said Marc.
“Oh yes, I will.”
“Oh no, you won’t! That will never happen. Just wait and see!”
For the first time ever, Marc wanted to perform well. He couldn’t bear it if his friend came top and he did badly. So when he got home, he opened his math book. But there was so much to do. All of a sudden, he felt like he’d forgotten everything he had learned that year! He didn’t know where to start. When his sister Lily came in, he was sitting expressionlessly by the desk, just staring out of the window.

A. Difficult to get B. Fit to be eaten
C. Suitable to be tested D. Interesting to play with
9. What plays an important role in the survival of crows?
A. Interacting with other crows effectively.
B. Developing similar warnings for dangers.
C. Recognizing the sounds of other animals.
D. Helping each other in big families to get food.
10. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Crows-can tell right from wrong. B. Crows are mean sometimes.
C. Crows are grateful birds. D. Crows have a good memory.
11. Which is a suitable title for the text?
A. Crows Can Use Tools to Get the Food
B. Crows Communicate in Intelligent Ways
C. Cute Crows: They Remember You Forever

They also remember those who were kind to them and pass that information along, too, often bringing gifts of rocks or other small objects as a thank-you.

Tip: When you learn a new word, try to learn all the forms of that word.
● ___17___

Tip: ___18___ Learning shouldn’t be boring. Read each text several times to make sure you understand how to use new words and expressions in the text.
● Improve your grammar.
Grammar is very important because it improves the quality (质量) of your writing.
Tip: ___19___ The first time, look for general mistakes and the second time look for mistakes with the grammar point you are studying at the moment.

A. Know your readers.
B. Read widely and often.
C. Always check your writing twice.
D. Remember, practice makes perfect!

G 17. B 18. E 19. C 20. D
That’s not just being able to know lots of words — it means actually being able to use them correctly.(这不仅仅是能够知道很多单词,这意味着能够正确地使用它们)可知,G项Do this by learning new words with example sentences, not just word lists.(通过例句学习新单词,而不仅仅是单词表)符合文意。选项G中的new words与标题中的vocabulary以及与上句中的lots of words呼应,并且选项G中的doing this可与use them correctly形成指代关系。
Reading in English is useful in many ways.(读英语在很多方面是很有用的)可知,这个小标题强调读英语的重要性。
Choose books or articles that interest you.(选择你感兴趣的书或文章)符合文意。
The first time, look for general mistakes and the second time look for mistakes with the grammar point you are studying at the moment.(第一次,找出一般的错误,第二次,找出你正在学习的语法点的错误)可知,此处指写完后要检查两遍。 选项C中的“twice”可与其中的“The first time…the second time”呼应,故选C。
Be prepared to write several versions (版本) of each text.(准备好写几遍的打算)及本段的小标题Just do it!(就这么干吧!)

故填which。

Dear David,
I am Li Hua, the monitor of Class 6 Grade 3. Knowing more sports events will be carried out in our extra-curricular activities, I’d like to recommend two events on behalf of my class.
Most of us consider jogging is suitable for both boys and girls. Not only will it benefit our health but also is helpful to shape our body. As for the group game, football is much more popular than others, especially among boys. All the members learn to cooperate with each other so that they build up important qualities like responsibility and teamwork. For these reasons, it’s highly recommended that jogging and football should be included.
Hopefully, our recommendation will be taken into consideration.
Yours,
Li Hua

“I’m supposed to review my lessons,” he said.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“You don’t look happy, Marc. What’s wrong?” she said. Explaining what had happened, especially the bet between him and Huck, he told Lily his decision. He wanted to make careful preparations for the exam, but ran into difficulties with math. He was at a loss what to do next. “Don’t worry! I’ll help you. Just be confident!” replied Lily. The following days, Marc worked very hard and made great progress. Gradually, his confidence grew and he could solve math problems with ease, with the instructions appearing in his brain as if the teacher was standing at his side .
On the day of the exam, Marc went to school with great confidence. He met Huck in the classroom, who looked delighted as if he was bound to win. But Marc didn’t care. When the exam began, Marc answered all the questions as best as he could. Several days later, the result came out. It turned out that Marc did much better than Huck. “Well done,” said Mom. “We could go to see a movie to celebrate, and you can choose one.” “I think Lily should choose,” said Marc. “I would never have gained such a great achievement without her help and encouragement .”
选择:choose/make a choice/make an option
