cars can’t use it, and people put tables and chairs out in the street, then have a party! Dad said there

have moved away from the street now. It was interesting to see that the street didn’t change at all!
My mum was a bit worried about the party. “But a lot of people on the street don’t really know
each other”, she said. “What if they don’t have anything to talk about?” I just said, “Relax, Mum. It’ll
be great.”
What was the party like? It was wonderful! My friends and I really liked speaking to an old lady
called Louisa. She’s 89 and was telling us about when she and her friends were our age. So now I
always chat to her when I see her on the street. I didn’t know who she was before, but I’m glad we had

Do you knowAI? It’s the short form of artificial intelligence. With the development of AI, our life
is becoming easier and easier. AI has plenty of good points that are very useful to people.
First, AI can help humans to do dangerous work so that it can prevent humans from danger.
What’s more, AI can help humans to do boring work. And we can have more free time to do what
we love to do. Humans are productive (富有成效的) only about 3 to 4 hours in a day. Humans also
need breaks after work. But AI can work endlessly without breaks. AI can also change other languages
into Chinese so that we can travel around the world and talk with people from other countries without
learning the languages of their countries.
Thirdly, it can make fewer errors (失误) and increase accuracy (精度). An example of it is the use
of robotic surgery (外科手术 ) systems, making lower risk of human errors and improving patient
safety in healthcare.
However, AI has something bad as well. The creation of AI needs huge costs. Many people will

A kind of new houses in California is selling quite fast. In a short time, people buy 82 ones and
they need 1000 more. And the factories will build them soon—for they are able to build one in less
than 24 hours.
原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究!
12
Why can they do it so fast? Because 3D printing (打印) helps to make it. 3D printing not only
builds a house with less time, but also costs less and is more environmentally (环境上) friendly. And
there are different styles of 3D printed houses for people to choose.
3D printing is developing (发展) very fast. But there are some problems with 3D printed houses.
First, the house “printed” out may not be strong enough. Second, while building houses layer by layer
(逐层地 ), there may be some differences between layers. Some layers may be a little thinner or
thicker than others. Finally, there are now fewer types of 3D printing materials (材料) for us to use.
However, the future of 3D printed houses is promising. In India, there are not enough houses. The
country wants to use 3D printing to solve the problem. If successful, buildings by 3D printing may go
popular. We can also use it to build offices and other buildings. NASA wants to use 3D printing to
build something on Mars and the Moon.

A.By giving his advice. B.By showing a fact.
C.By telling his story. D.By asking a question.
45.What do we know about 3D printed houses?
A.It needs less time to build the houses. B.It costs too much to build the houses.

Passage 11
Do you know why different animals or insects (昆虫) have their special colors? They mainly use
colors to protect themselves.
Some birds like eating insects, but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because some
insects can change their colors with the colors of crops (庄稼). For example, there is a kind of insect.
When crops are green, it looks green. As the harvest time comes, it changes to the same brown color

as crops have. But some other insects can’t change their colors. So birds or other animals can easily
find and eat them. So they have to hide themselves and come out only at night.
If you study the animal life, you will find the main use of coloring is for animals to protect
themselves. Bears, tigers and some other animals move quietly through forests. People can’t easily see
them because these animals have the colors much like the trees.
Sea animals also have their own way of protecting themselves. Octopus (章鱼 ) can send out a
kind of very black liquid (液体 ) when it faces danger. So no one can find it, and then it can swim
away at once. That’s why it isn’t strong at all, but it can still live up to now.

D.Because they want to catch the birds at night and eat them.
52.What does the octopus do when it faces danger?
A.It swims to the deeper sea.
B.It changes its color.
C.It fights with other animals because it is strong enough.

Passage 12
Do you often feel it’s hard to move when you wake up? If so, you may be afraid. You may think
something terrible happened to you. In fact, many people have the same feeling, too. This is sleep
paralysis. It sounds scary, but it is normal.
Sleep paralysis happens when a person is sleeping or waking up. As the person sleeps, his or her
body slowly relaxes. Usually the person’s mind relaxes at the same time, but sometimes the mind

stays awake (清醒的) longer than the body. As a result, the person wakes up, but it’s difficult to move
or speak. Sleep paralysis can also happen when you wake up. Luckily, it seldom lasts for more than a
few seconds. Actions and words soon return to normal.
Some people say they may hear, see, or feel things during sleep paralysis. At one time, people
thought that ghosts (鬼魂) came in the room, held them and stopped them from moving. Science helps
us understand that these are part of sleep paralysis. Now we know that getting too little sleep, taking
some medicine and changing your sleep time can cause sleep paralysis. This can be terrible if it
happens to you, but it’s just a trick that your mind is playing on your body.
