Growing Potato Plants
Things prepared:
a potato that has sprouts
a flower pot with soil
a camera to record progress
Observation:
Day One
The color of the soil looks darker because I have just watered it. In the center of the pot, I can see a tiny sprout that has grown from the potato under the soil. I’ll call it Buddy. Buddy is green and yellow. I wonder how fast it will grow.
Day Six
Without much change in the past six days, I finally see some new progress on Buddy as it has grown taller. It’s exciting to see new life like this. I hope Buddy can grow faster.
Day Eleven
Buddy is getting larger! Three more new sprouts have grown around Buddy! Green leaves have grown on the new sprouts, but they have not fully grown yet. I guess I need to be a bit more patient.
Day Thirteen
Buddy continues to grow taller. The leaves on the new sprouts have grown a bit. I’m also glad to see more new sprouts that have grown from under the soil.
Day Fifteen
Finally, the leaves on the other sprouts are 3cm tall. They’re so green. I hope they will soon grow into new potatoes.
What I have learned:
It’s really great to grow potatoes. During these fifteen days, I have learned that growing potato plants needs plenty of water. If the soil is dry, the potato won’t grow. The temperature needs to be right. If it is too cold, it won’t grow, either.
I feel that growing plants is just like trying to succeed with anything in life. It takes not only time, but also lots of efforts and patience.

Passage 1(2023-24·广雅中学期末)
For 16-year-old Ma Yifei, the violin performance of the Beijing 2022 Olympic theme song, Snowflake, was her best present for Paralympians (残奥运动员) all over the world. Even though snowflakes are related to winter, she let others feel warmth, hope and light through her performance. “I’m also disabled and I want to do something for them with my music,” said Ma.
Ma went blind at the age of two because of an illness. She became interested in music when she was young. She started to learn to play the piano at five and the violin at nine, experiencing the “colorful” music through sound and emotion.
Ma’s mother Ha Chunyan, a former music teacher in a primary school, helped her memorize the music score (乐谱) before she played the piano. Ma could not see the keys and always played the wrong notes. It took her thousands of tries to play a piece correctly.
Learning the violin was more challenging. Ma needed to feel the teacher’s hands, arms and back to learn the movements, and listen to the strings over and over again to feel the muscles herself.
“After three years of learning, she still could not make any sound except terrible noises,” said Ha, who advised her daughter to give up the violin. But Ma said, “As I’ve been practicing so long, it’s hard to give up. I believe I will play better if I persist in practicing.”
In 2018, Ma got a chance to follow Sheng Yuan and Cao Yuhan, famous musicians from the Central Conservatory of Music, to study music in Beijing. She left her home in Ningxia to follow her musical dream, though she knew there would be more challenges ahead.
Ma expressed her excitement about performing at the big event. “All my hard work has paid off. I’m proud of standing on the stage today.”

Passage 2(2023-24·广州执信中学期末)
It was a hot day in early September. “Write about summer vacation,” Mrs. Brown gave the class a writing homework. She was a strict, older woman. “Be as creative as you can. But,” Mrs. Brown added, as she always did, “Make sure you use proper spelling and grammar.”
Jim didn’t want to write a stupid article about his summer vacation. So he gave up on the homework and wrote what he wanted to. Not an article at all but a short story. Science fiction. It was about a distant planet that didn’t have summer—it was spring all the time. And it didn’t have vacations, either. The aliens on the planet worked 24 hours a day.
The next morning, he handed in the story but soon he felt regretful. He even couldn’t sleep well. In English class, he saw the way Mrs. Brown looked at him with a strange look in her strict eyes for long. “I’m in trouble,” Jim thought, staring at the floor.
Mrs. Brown said, “Almost everyone in class wrote an article about his or her summer vacation... Almost everyone.”
“This is bad,” Jim thought. “I’m getting an F, I know it.”
“But,” the teacher continued, “One student decided he didn’t feel like doing that.”
“This is worse than an F... I’m in a note-to-the-parents situation now.” Jim couldn’t help thinking.
“All of your articles read as if they were written in your sleep. Just one of you had the courage to be as imaginative as I asked you to be. Jim Martin is the only one who got an A on the assignment. Now I’m going to ask him to come up here and read his story to you as an example of thinking independently and being creative.” Then, being Mrs. Brown, she added strictly, “though he should have a little more attention to proper spelling and grammar.”
Jim walked to the front of the classroom, as if he were climbing to the top of Mount Everest or were the first person to step onto the surface of Mars.
What a small thing really, he now reflected as he walked through the crowded hallway, just a single assignment. But what a difference that moment had made to him.
30. Why couldn’t Jim sleep well?
A. Because he felt tired out after writing for a whole day.
B. Because he thought the story he wrote was interesting.
C. Because he was afraid of being punished by his parents.
D. Because he worried that Mrs. Brown might be unsatisfied.
31. How did Jim feel when Jim walked to the front of the classroom?
A. Regretful. B. Proud. C. Scared. D. Curious.
32. What can be the best title for this passage?

When Wang Haiyan was young, her favorite toys weren’t Barbie dolls. Instead, she started learning to make shadow puppets (皮影) from her father at the age of 13. Now 43, Wang has spent 30 years practising and spreading the art.
Shadow puppetry is a form of theater that uses puppets made from leather or paper with music and singing. It was invented during the Western Han Dynasty, it tells us about folk tales and historical stories, passing down culture and traditions over thousands of years.
Shadow puppetry is all about creating the puppets and performing with them. Wang’s hometown of Hua County, Shaanxi, is known as the birthplace of the folk art.
Puppet-makers must follow 24 steps to make the puppets, including washing the leather, carving (雕刻), and painting. Carving is the most difficult part.
“We have a special carving skill — moving the leather under the knife.” Wang said. “You have to hold the knife still in your right hand and only move the leather in your left hand.”

While the paintings dried, Jessica noticed a long line of trucks driving into the park and stopped in a large playing field. “Vanessa Feather’s Famous Flying Circus,” Jessica read out.
“If we joined the circus, we would be able to travel around and have adventures,” with the thought, Jessica marched up to the two children, a boy and a girl who were practising.
“Hello,” she said. “My name’s Jessica and this is Zebedee. We thought your act was fantastic and we’d like to join your circus to be acrobats.”
“Hi, I’m Shula,” said the girl. “Mum’s the ringmaster. You’ll have to talk to her if you want to join us.”
“Well,” Vanessa said after listening to Jessica, “we’d be happy to teach you to be an acrobat if you seem good at it. Why don’t you have a go on the swing now?”
Jessica reached the top of the pole, took hold of the swing, sat down and pushed off. However, she was so afraid that she was stuck.

While they were travelling together, Huck found out that Jim was now owned by the Phelps, who happened to be the aunt and uncle of Tom Sawyer. He planned to save Jim disguised as Tom. It was easy for him to be Tom Sawyer because Tom was Huck’s best friend.
Huck went to see the Phelps and talked with them about the Sawyer family happily. Suddenly he heard a boat on the river. “Tom could be on the boat,” he thought, “and he’s going to walk in here and call out my name before I can stop him. I’ve got to go and meet him.”
So, he told Phelps that he would go into town to get his bags, which were at the boat station. On his halfway to town, his mouth fell open and he looked a bit white in the face.
“Aren’t you dead?” Tom said. “Everybody said that you were murdered!”
“I’m not dead yet,” Huck said, “but listen…” Huck told Tom about his adventures and Tom loved all that.
Tom thought for a bit, and then he said, “I know. You take my bags and say they’re yours. I’ll come to the house in about half an hour.”
“All right,” Huck said, “but there’s another thing. You know old Miss Watson’s slave Jim, he’s a prisoner there, and I’m going to help him escape.”
“Jim?” Tom asked. “But he’s…” Then he stopped and thought. “Right. I’ll help, too. I’ll make a good plan.” He looked very excited.
Huck went back to the house with the bags, and Tom came along half an hour later. Tom told Aunt Polly that he was Sid, Tom’s brother. Aunt Polly was very pleased to see Tom and Sid. Later Jim was held in a shed and Tom had a risky escape plan. As they carried out their plan, a group of farmers came chasing them. Tom was shot in the leg. Jim was recaptured when Tom passed out.

Passage 8(2023-24·龙岗区联考期中)
In 2004, when my daughter Becky was ten, she and my husband, Joe, were united because they wanted a dog, Misty. And they promised to walk her every day.
But from the second day, neither thought to walk the dog again. I was slow to accept that I would be the one to feed and clean her. As she looked up at the three new humans in her life, she calculated, “The middle-aged woman is the stupidest one.”
Quickly, she and I developed something special. She’d look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, and then wait, trusting I would understand her, which I almost always did.
Even so, part of me continued to hate the walking duty Joe and Becky had promised to carry out. It nearly drove me mad. “Not fair!” I’d loudly remind everyone I knew.
On January 1, 2007, Joe’s doctor said an unthinkable word—leukemia (白血病). With that, I spent eight to ten hours a day with him in the hospital, doing anything and everything I could to ease his discomfort. Every part of my life changed; no part of my old life remained.
Save one—Misty still needed walking. At the beginning, when my friends wanted to help walk her, I refused because I knew they were busy.
As months went by, I began to realize that I actually wanted to walk Misty. The walk in the morning before I headed to the hospital was a quiet, peaceful time to clear my head.
After Joe died in 2009, Misty slept on his pillow.
The truth is, after these years, I’ve come to enjoy my walks with Misty. She reminded me that no matter how hard the present or unpredictable the future, there’s almost always some joy in my life.

15. What does the writer want to tell the readers in the passage?

Still in shock! I moved around the house purposeiessly trying to decide what to put into the suitcases. Earlier that evening, I’d received a call telling me that my brother was killed in a car crash. “Come as soon as you can.” cried my mother.
I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were packing to move from New York to Seattle. Our house was in total mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere. I purposelessly picked things up and put them down. Mother’s crying went through my head again and again.
Larry called some friends to tell them what had happened. Someone asked to speak to me. “If there’s anything I can do, let me know.” But I didn’t know what to ask for.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Emerson. He and his wife Donna lived in the block nearby.
“I’ve come to clean your shoes,” he said.
I asked him to repeat.
“Donna had to stay with the baby,” he said, “but we want to help you.” I remember when my father died.
I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen. Emerson got to work right away. Watching him devoting himself to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order. I told myself to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed. One job after another.
When we returned to wash the dishes, Emerson had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean, we left for the airport with all the jobs done.
Now whenever I hear of a friend who’s lost a loved one, I no longer call with the polite offer, “If there’s anything I can do...” Instead, like taking the dog to the boarding kennel (狗屋; 养狗场) or house-sitting during the funeral (葬礼) , “How did you know I needed that one?” I reply, “Because a man once cleaned my shoes.”

Passage 6(2023-24·广州实验外国语学校)

【记叙文】

A. An Unexpected Praise B. A Creative Writer
C. A Summer to Remember D. Mrs. Brown’s Surprise
Passage 3(2023-24·广州白云区期末统考)
It took Wang three years to master this skill. She used a brick (砖) to strengthen her left hand while practising. “It takes about 3,000 carves to make a shadow puppet. The complicated (复杂的) steps make it hard to hand down the folk art.” she said.
But Wang has found a way to do so. In 2016, she made shadow puppets based on the cartoon series Huyao Xiaohongniang and gave an online performance. She used colors like blue and purple that aren’t often seen in shadow puppetry and added some sticks to the puppets to make the performance more lively. “I hope more and more young people enjoy shadow puppetry and pass it down.” She said.

A. Washing the leather. B. Carving the leather.

A. It’s difficult to learn to make puppets. B. This art is only known in Hua County.
C. It requires great strength to perform the art. D. The history of shadow puppetry is too old.
29. What can we learn from the passage?
