It was a warm spring afternoon, and the sun cast a golden hue(色调) over the small town of Willow Creek. The city’s annual art exhibition was going on, and the visitors were discussing the works with excitement. Among them was Emily, a talented artist. She appreciated the pictures with her heart pounding in her chest.
Emily had always been passionate about painting since young. Over the years, her talent had bloomed, and her pictures had become a reflection of her soul — full of life and emotion. Each brushstroke(笔画) was a whisper of her thoughts, a secret shared with the world. Today, she exhibited a painting of her grandmother, a woman who had shaped her life with love and care. The painting was a reminder of the impact her grandmother had on her life, a symbol of the bond that would never fade.
As the exhibition continued, Emily watched with nervous anticipation as people moved around the room, admiring various works. Emily searched their faces for a reaction, her heart jumping when she saw a smile or a nod of appreciation. Suddenly, a familiar voice called out, “Emily, this is wonderful! Your grandmother looks so alive on this picture.” It was her art teacher, Mr. Smith, standing before her painting with a look of genuine admiration. His words filled her with a sense of achievement and relief.
The rest of the afternoon passed soon. More praises came her way. But it was the elderly man who caught her attention. He stood before her painting for what seemed like a century, his eyes misty with memories. When he finally spoke, his offer took her by surprise. “This painting reminds me so much of my late grandmother. I would like to make you an offer. Would you consider selling this painting to me?”

(23-24高二下·山东青岛·期末)Anna, an 11-year-old girl, was excited because today was the drawing contest at her school. Anna was really good at drawing and usually got the highest marks in art. Her teachers would often ask her to make posters for school plays and call on her during free periods to help with cuttings, drawing, shading, coloring and much more. There was an art competition taking place in school and Anna had worked really hard and wanted to win it. But there was one thing that was worrying her today.
Recently, a new girl, Bree, had joined her class. She was also interested in art but she was not as good at drawing as Anna was. Miss Green, the art teacher, helped Bree and taught her tips and tricks to improve her drawing skill. And now Bree was also considered among the best artists in grade six.
Bree was quick, smart and intelligent. Anna became jealous (妒忌) of Bree’s intelligence and felt that the new girl would be tough to beat.
So that day, for the art competition, Miss Green took all the students to the art room, told them their roll numbers and gave important instructions. Anna's roll number was 16, while Bree was number 17. The bell rang, indicating the beginning of the contest. Miss Green wrote on the board: make a scene of a sunset with a flowing river and a sailing boat.
Anna knew that the best tools to make a sunset were oil pastels (油画棒) . Anna started to look for her oil pastels in her art bag. Then, after looking through the bag, she remembered that she had left them at home. Immediately, she got up to tell Miss Green.
Miss Green was surprised at Anna’s carelessness and told her that she was sorry for not offering help, since she didn’t have any oil pastels at hand, either. Anna looked around and failed to find any of her friends there in the room, much to her disappointment.

(23-24高二下·湖北武汉·期末)Amy loved to draw, and her hands, always dirty from the pencil lead, moved on the paper, showing the pictures in her mind. She would sit for hours, lost in art. Trees on her pages seemed to swing in an unseen wind, and the faces she drew wore lifelike expressions. Her clothes were old and had many patches(补丁), which were laughed at by her classmates. Their laughter was a clear contrast to the quiet dignity with which Amy carried herself. Amy’s family did not have much money, but they loved each other very much. Her mother worked hard at many jobs to take care of them after Amy’s father got sick and died.
One day, the school announced an art contest. The announcement, with the theme “Nature and Humanity,” was met with a wave of children’s excitement, Amy in particular. The school would select the top three winners, and the head teacher would award them prizes. Children enthusiastically registered for the contest and, after thoughtful consideration, finished their own art pieces. The contest organizers gathered all submissions one week later and set up an exhibit showcasing every participant’s work in the school gym.
The school gym was filled with viewers as the walls displayed the efforts of the young artists. There were paintings of colorful landscapes where the sun burst through thick clouds. Some students had created portraits (肖像) of their heroes. In this sea of creativity, one painting stood out. In the painting, a community garden was drawn, a place where people from diverse backgrounds came together in a joint effort, their hands united in the act of planting seeds of hope and unity: Each figure was painted with such care and attention to detail that they seemed to step off the canvas, inviting the viewer to join them in their labor of love.
The exhibition would last a week, and all the students and teachers could vote for their favorite work.

(23-24高二下·四川攀枝花·期末)Lily loved school. However, there was one class Lily worried about more than any other —art. She didn’t know why she just wasn’t any good at drawing, painting, or cutting.
Ms. Clay, the art teacher, stood at the front of the room. “Class, next Friday our school is going to have an art competition,” she announced. Ms. Clay was a great teacher, and Lily liked her a lot. But this announcement made Lily nervous. “Everyone in the school will create a piece of artwork to show in the library. You can use the different types of artwork we have been studying.” Ms. Clay was quite excited when she spoke while Lily found herself sinking lower in her chair.
Lily had the whole weekend to work on her project, but she could not think of anything to do. On Monday, Lily felt frightened, so after school Lily asked Ms. Clay if she could write an art paper instead of doing an art project.
“I understand this project scared you, Lily.” Ms. Clay said. “Just remember, you can create any kind of art you want.” Ms. Clay smiled at her. “Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings —it isn’t always painting, drawing, or cutting. I know you will think of something very creative, and I can’t wait to see it.”
When Lily arrived home, she took out a piece of paper and a pencil. She remembered Ms. Clay’s words. “Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings.” Lily wrote the word “terrified” on her paper. She crumpled(揉皱) the paper and threw it to the side of her desk.
Then Lily stared at the crumpled ball. Suddenly an idea struck her. Why not create something out of crumpled paper?

After Henry delivered all thenewspapers, he pedaled fast to The Gazette offices by 8: 30. The chief editorhad something important to tell him. He parked his bike and bounded up twonights of stairs to the chief editor's door.
Mr. Trotta greeted him."About those papers," he paused, "no good way to deliver badnews," Henry’s smile faded. "Were closing shop Saturday. Advertisingis down. Television is how people get their news today, Mr. Trotta shrugged, "You won't have to get up early on weekends." "No," said Henry, "but I like waking up early and meeting people on my route. It'ssad People won't get their neighborhood news any more.”
As Henry rode past the familiar houses, he saw Mr Grady on his porch(门廊) holding a broom(扫把). "Mr. Grady, wait," Henry called, setting down his bike. He led Mr. Grady to a chair and took the broom. In minutes, the porch was clean. "Now, Mr, Grady, anytime you have chores(家务) call me." They sat for a while asMr. Grady recalled how happy he’d been moving his family to 26 Maple. He sounded lonely.
A week after closing, Henry wondered if his customers missed The Gazette as much as he did. He thought of a way to find out.
He started out on his oldroute with a notebook. First stop: Mr, Jonas, 17 Oak. When Henry asked him about the paper, Mr. Jonas answered, "I sure liked reading the week'shappenings. By the way, I have a pile of old comics from The Gazette. Think someone would want them?"
“I’ll ask around." Henry made a note in his notebook.
He stopped at Mrs. Burke's, 27 Maple. She opened the door holding two babies. Her other two kids held on toher legs. Henry stared. "You could use a babysitter." "Definitely. I meant to put an ad in The Gazette, but....Know any neighbors with experience?”

(23-24高二上·山东济南·期中)Jim stared at the ground and sighed in disappointment. Players from the opposing team raced past Jim, celebrating their shocking victory. They’d scored the game-winning goal just seconds before the end of the game.
“Just one word to describe a loss like that,” Jim mumbled to his teammate Devin.
“Terrible!” Devin sighed. “It was a tough one.” He trotted(小步快跑) toward the middle of the field to shake hands with the winning team. Jim walked slowly behind Devin. He unhappily slapped hands with the winners, and then stopped to shut his eyes as the autumn air cooled his sweaty face.
“Terrible,” he repeated to himself as he sat on the bench and pulled his jacket on. “Let’s get some hot chocolate and watch the next game,” Devin said. There were eight teams in the YMCA league, so games would go on all morning. “Sorry. I’m heading home,” Jim said, “I’ve had enough soccer for today.”
As he reached the gate, Jim glanced back to see the next two teams take the field. They were jumping and shouting, excited to play. “That was us a little while ago, before we were discouraged.” Jim thought.
So why we lost the game at last? Jim asked himself. How did such a well-played game end up with such a terrible result? It was still clear in his head: Jim had the ball deep on the Jets’ side of the field, looking for Devin or another teammate to pass to. His team had outplayed the Jets for most of the game, but failed within the last seconds.
Jim let out a deep breath. The morning was growing warmer. Perfect for soccer. Jim looked back toward the field. He couldn’t see it, but he could hear the excited voices as the game continued.

(23-24高二上·山东烟台·期末)David was a windsurfer, who was serious and hardworking. He dreamed of becoming a city champion of the annual Teenager Windsurfing Race. To achieve it, he barely missed a single game or practice whatever the weather. After months of intense training, the big day finally arrived!
The beach was crowded with the excited audience, including reporters and photographers. The speaker system was announcing the names of the windsurfers, calling them to get ready for the race. And there was David, in a line with other windsurfers, all of them moving nervously up and down on the waves behind an imaginary starting line. They were all fighting for the best position to start and were tense as a result, ignoring the vast sea they were on.
The moment the starter’s signal sounded, David was off, so natural and quick. He pulled hard at his sail to race just ahead of the group. As he picked up speed, gliding(滑行) over the waves, he felt the familiar joy and freedom that windsurfing always gave him. What he loved was simply being out at sea. He could hardly stop himself from shouting out in excitement, rushing to the finishing line for the first.
“Go! David!” The wind carried over a familiar voice. He looked around and spotted his elder sister Jessica on her speedboat upwind of him cheering for him. She waved at David and he nodded his head in acknowledgement, even though he knew she was too far away to see him. Just as he turned away, however, out of the comer of his eye, he saw smoke behind the speedboat, on the shore. Knowing that the smoke could tell him the direction the wind was blowing, he decided to study it for a moment out of habit. Just as he was getting a better sense of how to use the wind to his advantage, he saw it.

(24-25高二上·湖南长沙·期中)Jeff fixed his eyes on the scoring record, breathed deeply as he gazed upon the basketball court. Despite the gym’s age and modest size, it held a long history. “Maybe today is my chance to create some history,” Jeff whispered to himself. His basketball league was in a celebratory mood, with today’s championship game signifying the 50th anniversary(周年). Jeff read the anniversary brochure, which detailed the winners and leading scorers from each championship game. He paused suddenly upon spotting the top scorer’s name from a game that took place 30 years ago. His eyes widened in astonishment as he called out to his teammate David, brandishing(挥舞) the brochure. “Look who holds the all-time record! It’s my dad! He never mentioned this to me.” “Twenty-four points,” David remarked. “That’s awesome!” Jeff, the Badgers’ leading scorer with a personal best of 19 points, was amazed. “My dad never showed off something like that,” Jeff commented.
When Jeff’s parents arrived, he showed them the brochure. His dad chuckled(咯咯笑). “It’s true that I didn’t miss a shot in that game, but look at the score. I would have traded every shot for a win,” he sighed with a regret look on his face. Jeff had failed to notice that his dad’s team had lost by a single point. “I had a great group of teammates back then,” his dad added. “You have a great team in the Badgers too.” As Jeff prepared for the game, his father’s words were still echoing in his mind. “This will be a struggle every second,” the coach had emphasized before they took to the court. “I expect to see your tough defense, sharp passing, and, most important, smart play as a team.” Jeff was confident in his ability to lead the Badgers to victory, just as he had in previous games against the Lions. By the end of the game, Jeff had scored 23 points, playing with exceptional determination. Another basket would break his father’s scoring record.

(24-25高二上·重庆·阶段练习)Oh no. Coach Cafferty just said my name—for the event. The one-kilometer bicycle race for the upcoming sports meeting! Not the event I had wished and practiced for so long!
Beads of sweat popped out over my upper lip. Morgan, my best friend and fellow cyclist, pressed her elbow into my side, trying to offer some moral support. But even her encouragement didn’t help this time. My stomach felt like it was sinking into my knees, heavy and tense.
Morgan tried to convince me it would be fine. “Maybe Coach has more confidence in you than you think.” “Or maybe Coach Cafferty just wants to give the rest a laugh when I struggle through the track,” I thought desperately. I walked toward Coach Cafferty and told her about my worries and my desire to quit this event. She frowned and asked if that was what I really wanted. I hesitated. She smiled and urged me to go practice as much as possible.
The first practice was a disaster. I misjudged my speed, my legs burned halfway through the lap, and I even had to stop to catch my breath. A kilometer had never felt so long. I felt like everyone was watching, maybe even laughing at my attempts, and my stomach twisted with embarrassment. How could I get this right in just two weeks? But when I finally climbed off the bike, exhausted and frustrated, I spotted Coach Cafferty smiling at me. Even with only two weeks to prepare, I pushed myself to practice every single day. Each session, my legs felt a little stronger, and my speed improved bit by bit. Slowly, the kilometer didn’t seem as impossible as it had at first.
Finally, the big day came. The whistle blew, and we were off. I pushed down hard on the pedals, launching myself forward.

(23-24高一下·山东·阶段练习)The birth of the little girl, Melody, cast a shadow over her family. The words the doctor said to Dana and Jeff completely shook them, “Your daughter was born with a cleft lip(唇裂).” It was impossible for the couple to hide their sadness. They couldn’t believe it was true until they saw their daughter in person. Seeing her cleft made Dana and Jeff heartbroken more than anything. It broke their heart to imagine the kind of life Melody would lead in the future.
Fortunately, Dana and Jeff saw a ray of hope when the doctor told the couple that their daughter’s condition was treatable with a cleft lip surgery(外科手术). Rather than feeling stressful like the first few days, they promised themselves they never wanted their daughter to suffer from that. They would spare no effort to support Melody.
Nothing is precious than their little angel, and Dana as well as Jeff was ready to do anything for Melody. After bringing Melody home, they immediately began looking for clef surgery options. However, no matter where they turned, getting Melody the surgery she needed was expensive, and the various treatments and medications she needed in the following would also be much more costly than the young family could afford.
Then came the thrilling moment when Jeff browsed through a medical forum one evening, he stumbled upon(意外发现) a post about a nonprofit organization that specialized in cleft lip surgeries for children. The organization, named Smileatfuture, is dedicated to providing free surgeries to families who could not ford the procedure. The couple had seen a lot of photos and read a lot of stories about children who had cleft surgeries sponsored by Smileatfuture, and the results were incredible. The idea that Melody could grow up with hardly a scar (伤疤) where her cleft was lit a fire under the couple. Without any hesitation, Dana and her husband reached out to Smileatfuture and handed in an application for medical aid.

(2024·河南信阳·模拟预测)It was 40 years ago. One day, Emma came back to their apartment from work and realized that her husband, David, was extremely ill. He was throwing up and slurring(发音不清) his words. Immediately, Emma grabbed her purse and took him by taxi to the nearest hospital, on the Lower East Side of New York City. The minutes slowly passed as they waited to see a doctor.
They sat there for a couple of hours, and it was pretty clear that nobody was going to pay attention to David. So they rushed to a second hospital, where they were also ignored. Emma knew something was very wrong with David, so they went to a third hospital. As she told the receptionist what was happening, Emma sensed the person wasn’t going to treat their case with urgency.
Emma was on the edge of a breakdown. After three failed attempts to get help, she had reached her limit. She started to shout in the lobby(大厅). That’s when her unsung hero appeared.
That person was a young man with dark hair and a white physician’s coat. He came to Emma and said, “How can I help you? What’s going on here?” Emma explained what was happening to David, and that she was afraid it was serious.
The young man said, “You know, I just got done with my neurological residency(神经系统的实习期) up at Lenox Hill Hospital. I’ll take him in the back and look.” Within two or three minutes, the young man came out and said, “You are absolutely right. Something is very seriously wrong with your husband.”

(2024·福建南平·模拟预测)Kelly is a nurse. Her kidney(肾脏) proved to be a perfect match for her cousin, Dana, who is a teacher. Her kidney had worsened to the point where she required a transplant(移植). As Kelly told Dana, “I’m in good health and I almost never get sick or ill. It seems that I can be a donor for you.” Dana was wild with joy.
Later on a Thursday afternoon, after spending the first of two days undergoing tests to confirm her kidney was a match for Dana, Kelly got a call from a Cleveland Clinic caregiver. They were canceling the second day of her tests. A CT scan revealed the presence of a tumor(肿瘤) on Kelly’s right kidney.
Kelly was shocked about the discovery and concerned she might no longer be a donor available for Dana. That meant that Kelly had to have an operation to remove the tumor, unable to donate her kidney. Meanwhile Dana had to wait for some other donors for a matchable kidney, which was really hard to find. Dana was thrown back to desperation.
The cousins were at a loss. But their doctors wouldn’t give up. They tried every possible means to find a solution that could satisfy both sides, treating Kelly’s illness and offering Dana transplanting. But the bad news was that there had been few such reported cases.
Determined to solve this difficult problem, Dr. Wee, director of the Kidney Transplant Program, held meetings with a team of specialists to discuss over details of the case and best steps to move forward. They worked day and night to search for related information and make analysis. Seeing the devotion of the experts, Kelly and Dana felt the flame of hope returning to their hearts.

(24-25高三上·内蒙古锡林郭勒盟·期中)The school gymnasium was transformed into a hub (中心) of innovation and excitement as students from all grades gathered for the annual science fair. Projects lined the walls, each one a testament(证明) to the hard work and creativity of the students. Among the exhibits was a particularly impressive volcano created by a group of enthusiastic freshmen, and a sophisticated solar-powered car designed by a team of seniors.
In the corner of the gymnasium, a slightly nervous but determined-looking girl named Mei stood next to her project. She had spent weeks preparing for this event, working tirelessly on a device that could convert (使转变) thermal energy from the environment into electricity. Her invention was a small, compact box with a series of thermoelectric cells(热电元件) and a small fan to let heat out. Mei had named it “Eco-Power,” and she hoped it would impress the judges and her peers.
As the first group of students approached her table, Mei took a deep breath and began to explain the workings of her invention. She was proud of her work, but the pressure of the science fair was starting to get to her. Her hands trembled slightly as she demonstrated how the device could power a small LED light using the heat from a warm cup of water.
The crowd around Mei’s project grew, and she could feel the weight of their expectations. She noticed a few students whispering and pointing at her device, and she couldn’t tell if they were impressed or skeptical. Mei’s heart raced as she continued to answer questions and explain the scientific principles behind her invention.

(24-25高三上·河北唐山·开学考试)Gabriel had always been fascinated by robots. His mother, however, did not think much of it. She often criticized him, urging him to focus on his schoolwork instead of those“ useless machines”, as she called them. She wanted him to spend more time on his books, and less time lost in the world of robotics. He, however, always worked quietly on parts, trying to create inventions that could solve everyday problems.
One day, Gabriel came back from school, bursting through the front door, holding a shining award in his hand. The gas detection robot he had built for months had just won first place in the regional competition. His heart raced as he imagined his mother would be proud this time.
“Mom! Look! I won!” he cried. His mother, standing at the kitchen counter, looked briefly. She sighed, “That’s nice, Gabriel, but I still don’t see what good it will do you. It’s not going to help you with your grades or get you into college. You need to focus on something more practical.” Her voice showed no interest. Gabriel remained quiet, determined to prove that what he was doing had value.
One evening, as the delicious smell of dinner floated through the house, an unexpected danger was quietly closing. Gabriel’s mother had been busy in the kitchen but had forgotten to turn off the gas. Unaware of the coming threat, she had wandered into the living room, settling down comfortably in front of the TV. The gas continued to escape, silently filling the air. The house was on the edge of a disaster.

(23-24高二下·内蒙古兴安盟·期中)In 2018, 17-year-old Hemesh spent a life-changing summer with his grandmother Anne, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Witnessing the impact of the disease firsthand, Hemesh was awakened to the seriousness of the situation.
One night, Hemesh walked into the kitchen only to discover that his grandmother had left the gas stove (炉) on after making tea. Shocked by the dangerous consequences Alzheimer’s disease could bring about, he couldn’t help but wonder what might have happened if he hadn’t been there.
Hemesh’s worries increased as he observed his grandmother’s behavior. She would wake up in the early hours of the morning, believing she was on a train, and wander outside aimlessly. This wandering tendency could potentially lead her to get lost or put herself in risky situations.
Determined to make a difference, Hemesh engaged himself in extensive research about Alzheimer’s disease and its symptomatic (症状的) progression. Through his studies, he discovered that wandering was a common problem among dementia patients, especially those with Alzheimer’s disease.
Inspired by his newfound knowledge and fueled by his desire to help, Hemesh told his family, “I can’t just stand by and watch this happen. I need to do something to keep Grandma safe. I think I have an idea that might help not just her, but others in similar situations.”
With firm determination, he developed an inventive answer to the wandering dilemma, a device he called the Guardian Companion. It was a wearable device, similar to a smartwatch, specifically designed for Alzheimer’s patients. It integrated advanced GPS technology and a panic button to assist those who tended to wander, ensuring their safety and well-being. After the device got its official approval, Hemesh happily went to try it on for his grandmother.

(2024·贵州黔东南·三模) “I have something important I would like to read to you,” Ava told her parents. They were sitting side by side on the couch as she stood in front of them. They looked at each other a little cautiously, but smiled. Ava took that as a good sign.
“In school,” she told them, “we’ve been working on persuasive essays. My teacher said that in order to persuade people you have to have reasons and evidence. You can’t just say the same thing over and over again.”
“Well that’s certainly true,” her father said. But Ava wasn’t done yet. “My essay is called Why I Am Responsible and Ready for a Cell Phone,” she continued, smiling as she read.
It had been a problem for months. All three of her best friends received cellphones for Christmas. But Ava’s parents would just shake their heads whenever she asked them.
For weeks it seemed like there was nothing she could do. But then, a week ago, they had started working on writing persuasive essays at school. It occurred to her that why not write a persuasive essay?
For a whole week, she’d worked on her persuasive essay, coming up with all the reasons why she should have a cell phone. She was confident that this essay was the best thing that she had ever written. There was no way her parents wouldn’t be persuaded.
“Alright Ava,” her mom said. “We both wanted to wait until you were older to get you a cell phone.” “But, Ava, since you think you are ready for it, this weekend you shall get it. But we want you to understand, a cellphone is not all just fun and games,” her Dad said. “This is a high responsibility.” He started to list all of the ways that she had to be responsible with her phone, but Ava wasn’t listening anymore. She was too busy trying to decide what apps she could download. On the weekend, her plan worked! She had a cellphone!

【答案】
At that moment, Emily hesitated. What should she do? She couldn’t imagine parting with the painting that held so many precious memories of her grandma. However, the thought of the old man’s sense of loss also upset her. Emily stood there, her gaze fixed on her painting. She recalled her grandmother’s warm smile and the love she had shown to her throughout her life. After a while, she turned to the old man, “I... I’m sorry,” she stammered, “I’m afraid I could not offer it to you.” The man nodded his head, forcing a smile and walked out of the exhibition room, a sense of loss spreading across his face.
Seeing the man leaving disappointedly, Emily made a new decision. She took down the picture, ran to the elderly man and spoke to him, “I’ve decided to offer you the painting.” Hearing the words, the man’s eyes widened with astonishment, “You mean it?” he asked, his voice trembling with emotion. Emily nodded her head firmly. Tears running down his face, the man reached out and took Emily’s hand tightly. “Thank you. This means the world to me.” Emily smiled, her heart filled with joy. It dawned on her that art not only has the power to create beauty but also conveys emotions and builds connections.

【答案】
Paragraph 1:
Anna’s eyes were full of tears. She felt helpless and frustrated, knowing that without her oil pastels, her chances of winning the competition were slim. Just as she was about to give up, she noticed Bree, who was busy sketching away with her own set of tools. A thought crossed Anna’s mind—maybe Bree wouldn’t mind sharing. With a trembling voice, Anna approached Bree and explained her situation. To her surprise, Bree didn’t hesitate and offered Anna half of her oil pastels, saying, “We’re in this together, Anna. Let’s make something amazing.” Anna’s heart warmed as she realized that Bree wasn’t just a competitor but also a friend. With renewed energy, she began to work alongside Bree, using the shared resources to create a stunning sunset scene.
Paragraph 2:
The two girls stood hand in hand, waiting for the winners to be announced. As Miss Green walked towards the front of the room, holding the results, Anna’s heart pounded. She glanced at Bree, who was smiling confidently. To everyone’s amazement, Miss Green announced that the joint effort of Anna and Bree had won the competition. The room erupted in cheers and applause. Anna couldn’t believe it—not only had she overcome her fear of losing to Bree, but they had also accomplished something beautiful together. She hugged Bree tightly, grateful for the lesson she had learned: true talent lies not just in individual skills but also in the power of collaboration and friendship. From that day on, Anna and Bree became inseparable, pushing each other to new heights in their artistic pursuits.

【答案】
Finally came the day when the winners were announced. The day of the winners’ announcement was met with a mix of excitement and anxiety. Amy stood nervously, her patched dress becoming a sharp contrast to the vibrant paintings surrounding her. The head teacher’s voice echoed through the gym as he announced the third and second place winners, each recipient receiving a round of applause. The room fell silent for the grand announcement. And the first prize goes to Amy for her captivating portrayal of Nature and Humanity, the head teacher announced. A wave of cheers washed over Amy as she stepped forward, tears of joy streaming down her face.
The children who had laughed at Amy started to see her in a new way. The tease that once followed Amy was replaced with admiration. Her classmates, who had laughed at her, now saw her as a beacon of talent and inspiration. Her painting, a simple garden where diversity thrived, became a symbol of unity and harmony. Amy’s triumph resonated with her peers, who began to appreciate the inherent gifts in every individual. The whispers of disdain were replaced with praises, and Amy’s name echoed with respect. Her success not only earned her praises but also a newfound status among her peers, who now looked at her with awe and inspiration.

【答案】
The crumpled paper reminded her of a snowball. “Why not make a snowman with these paper snowballs?” Lily suddenly thought to herself. She didn’t have to draw or paint or even cut. Lily made many paper balls, glued them all together, and placed them on a big piece of hard paper to form a snowman. The snowman wore a hat made of black paper and a scarf made of red paper. Her finished project was really wonderful, which made her feel very satisfied.
On Friday, Lily carefully carried her project into the library. She noticed the smile and the nods from teachers and other students as she put her work on a table. Ms. Clay walked over to Lily. “You have created so creative a piece of artwork that I am very proud of you!” Ms. Clay said kindly. Lily was proud of herself too. Her pride grew when Ms. Clay placed a first-place star on her artwork. “Maybe I am a good artist after all,” Lily thought with full confidence.

【答案】One possible version:
With a car’s horn beeping, Jim’s friends Tara and Bryan jumped out of the car. “How did you do?” Tara asked eagerly. “Terrible!” Jim replied in a down tone, still trying to figure out how the opposing team scored the game — winning goal just seconds before the end of the game. Bryan patted Jim’s shoulder asking, “Is winning the game the only reason why you play soccer and what really matters when playing a game?” Hearing this, Jim didn’t want to go home but decided to follow his friends and watch their game.
There came the turn for Tara and Bryan’s team to play the game. Jim watched with full attention as Tara’s team played fiercely against their opposing team. What impressed him most was that all the players in Tara’s team cooperated perfectly with unwavering resolve on their faces. Even when they were in a tie with the opponent, they stayed positive and confident. It dawned on Jim that success doesn’t always depend on the end result, but rather on how we face adversity and grow from it.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Not just the smoke but a big fire! David couldn’t believe his eyes. It occurred to him that it was from a restaurant where he once did a part-time job and that all the staff might be among the audience. He looked back at the beach, where all of the audience were too attentive to the race to be conscious of the fire. It was then that he made a resolution to turn around, passing by the other windsurfers and racing towards the shore, rather than the finishing line.
The other windsurfers were far ahead of him at that time. Apparently, this promising teenager had withdrawn the Race. Many confused people who noticed his strange behavior also spotted the shocking smoke and fire on the shore. The teenager rushed towards the fire, followed by many adults, including the staff. More hands made light work. They put out the fire before it was too late, minimizing the losses. Due to his contribution, the organizing committee awarded David the sportsmanship Award. All the audience applauded him for his acceptance speech: “I don’t regret losing the chance of becoming a champion to help others.”

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
However, the Badgers was now one point behind the Lions. The pressure mounted as the final seconds ticked away on the game clock. Jeff got the ball and he could feel the weight of his father’s glory on his shoulder. And here came the final attack of the Badgers. Knowing what the Badgers’ top scorer was capable of, the Lions tried to defend the lead by surrounding Jeff. With the ball in his possession, Jeff saw David, positioned perfectly for a shot. In a split-second decision, Jeff selflessly passed the ball to his teammate, trusting in David’s ability to make the crucial play.
With no defenders around, David caught the ball, turned and shot at the basket. The ball sailed through the air, tracing a beautiful curve before eventually swishing through the net. The gym erupted into cheers as the referee blew the whistle, signaling the end of the game. Jeff’s heart raced as he realized what had just happened. With that basket, his team secured the victory, but personally, he failed to achieve his goal of breaking his father’s scoring record. However, as he glanced at his father’s approving gaze from the sidelines, Jeff felt a profound sense of accomplishment. In that moment, he understood that while individual achievements are noteworthy, the true essence of victory lies in “playing as a team”.

【答案】
My legs felt strong at first, but halfway the familiar burn came back. I gritted my teeth and pushed through the pain, remembering all the hard work and determination that had brought me to this point. The cheers from the crowd seemed to grow louder, giving me an unexpected boost of energy. I focused on my breathing, in and out, and kept my eyes fixed on the track ahead. As I rounded the final turn, I could see the finish line just a few meters away. With every last bit of strength, I sprinted toward it, crossing the line with a burst of speed. The moment I stopped, I was overwhelmed with a mix of relief and pride. I had done it—I had completed the one-kilometer race, and to my surprise, I had even managed to place among the top competitors.
Holding the trophy in my hand, I heard someone call my name. It was Coach Cafferty, her face beaming with pride. “You did it!” she exclaimed, giving me a warm and encouraging hug. “I knew you had it in you.” Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized how far I had come. Morgan rushed over, her arms wide open, and we embraced, both of us laughing and crying at the same time. The sense of accomplishment was overwhelming, and I knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, I had the strength and perseverance to overcome them. This race had not only given me a trophy but also a newfound confidence and a belief in myself that would stay with me for years to come.

The man told Emma to take her husband to Lenox Hill Hospital, and that he had called the doctor with whom he had done his residency.
“He’ll be waiting for you,” said the young man.

But Emma began to cry, realizing she had no way of getting there, because she didn’t have any more cash for a taxi. Emma felt a wave of relief wash over her, knowing that her husband would finally receive the medical attention he desperately needed.
Soon Emma and her husband arrived at the hospital. The doctor who had been waiting for them immediately began to examine David thoroughly. Emma watched anxiously as the doctor conducted various tests and questioned David. After a few tense moments, the doctor turned to Emma with a serious expression. “Your husband has suffered a stroke,” he said. “We’ll need to get him into surgery immediately.” Emma nodded, grateful for the doctor’s quick action and expertise. She knew that without the help of the young doctor who had intervened, her husband’s condition could have been much worse.

After many meetings, the medical team felt confident to treat the two patients at the same time. Dr. Wee told the cousins that with their expertise they could deal with their situations at the same time. First, they safely removed Kelley’s right kidney with the tumor in it. Then they removed the tumor from the kidney. After the repair and reconstruction, and with more than 95% of the healthy kidney remaining. Dr. Wee transplanted it into Dana. It turned out the win-win practice, a breakthrough in similar medical cases.
The cousins recovered from their surgeries. “I have an overwhelming sense of gratitude to Kelly and all the doctors and thankfulness for the opportunity I’ve been given.” said Dana. “Now I have the opportunity to see my three sons marry, and have their children. Those are what I might not have been able to look forward to before.” Dana, with a perfectly functioning kidney, planned to return to her teaching job in the next spring. Kelly felt blessed to have had her tumor removed while helping her cousin to recover with a transplant.

As the judges made their way through the gymnasium, Mei’s anxiety reached its peak. When they finally reached her table, Mei took a deep breath and began to explain the concept of “Eco-Power” once again. The lead judge, a woman with a kind smile, listened intently and asked several detailed questions about the efficiency and practical applications of her device. Mei answered with as much confidence as she could muster, her hands still trembling slightly. The judges nodded approvingly, and Mei felt a glimmer of hope as they moved on to the next project.
When the awards ceremony began, Mei sat in the audience, with her hands tightly pressed together on the lap. Her heart pounded as the announcer called out the winners for various categories. Each name that wasn’t hers felt like a weighted push against her dreams. Finally, the announcement for the “Best Innovation” category echoed through the gym. “Eco-Power by Mei!” rang out, prompting an eruption of applause. Stunned but elated, Mei rose from her seat, her earlier fears melting away, as she walked up to receive her award, knowing her hard work had paid off.

【答案】
Suddenly, a loud alarm rang through the house. Gabriel’s gas detection robot had sensed the leak and sprung into action. The shrill sound jolted his mother from her TV reverie, her heart pounding as she realized the danger they were in. Quickly, she rushed to the kitchen, turned off the gas, and opened all the windows to let the fresh air disperse the dangerous fumes. As the alarm ceased, she stood there, breathing a sigh of relief, suddenly understanding the significance of Gabriel’s invention. It wasn’t just a toy or a useless machine; it was a lifesaver.
Gabriel’s mother held the robot gently in her arms, waiting for Gabriel to get back from school. She couldn’t wait to tell him how his creation had prevented a potential tragedy. When Gabriel finally walked through the door, his mother greeted him with tears in her eyes and a smile on her face. “Gabriel, you were right,” she said, hugging him tightly. “This robot isn’t just a hobby; it’s something that can protect us, make our lives safer. I’m sorry I didn’t see it before.” Gabriel’s heart swelled with pride and joy. From that day on, his mother became his biggest supporter, encouraging him to pursue his passion for robotics and recognizing the value of his inventions in making the world a better, safer place.

The device fit comfortably on her wrist. Hemesh walked his grandmother through the features, showing her how to use the panic button. Anne’s eyes lit up with a glimmer of hope, and for the first time since her diagnosis, she felt a sense of regained independence.
In the next few weeks, the device made a difference to Anne and her family. Not only did it provide a sense of security for Anne, but it also relieved the constant worry for her loved ones. The device brought peace of mind to the entire family, knowing that Anne was protected even when they couldn’t be by her side. Hemesh’s creation had truly transformed dementia care, and he found himself on a new mission to make the device accessible to as many people as possible, ensuring that no one had to face the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease alone.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
She couldn’t wait to show it to her friends. She could barely contain her excitement. Right away, she pulled out her school notebook and turned to the page where she had written the numbers of her friends. She called them one by one and joined in their chat group in no time. She downloaded the games they recommended. Chatting and playing online, everything seemed so wonderful. However, not all things would go as she wished. She began to lose interest in her study and could hardly focus on what the teachers were saying. Even worse, she got a D in a recent exam, which was alarming more than enough for her. She began to reflect on her recent behaviour.
She thought maybe, just maybe, she wasn’t ready for a phone yet. Maybe it was time to return the phone to her parents. While she was thinking about returning the phone, she also groaned about the fun that she would miss. What a dilemma, sighed Ava. Sensing Ava’s strange behavior, her parents approached her to inquire what happened. She attempted to say something but felt tongue-tied. Finally, she called up all her courage to tell them what had happened recently. To her surprise, they didn’t blame her. On the contrary, they allowed her to keep her phone as long as she did not commit the same mistake. After that, Ava finally understood what was her father’s so-called responsibility.
