Aug2024· Family
My family of four rode the Glacier Discovery Train from Portage to Grandview and back. This was just under 4 hours and a perfect amount of time for us to relax & see some beautiful nature and glaciers. Parking and check in at Portage station were easy. The train was good & clean, snacks were of great variety for a train, and crew was friendly. We had a fantastic afternoon!
Aug 2024· Couples
We took Denali Star from Anchorage to Fairbanks and back. The seats were comfortable enough with plenty of legroom. We enjoyed using the open back platform to spot wildlife. The taste of the food was very plain. Tthere needed to be a few more options for the dinner service. The bread pudding on the breakfast menu was the best thing served all day.
Aug2024· Singles
Great views from train.
Train was very uncomfortable. No charging ports for phones & pads! It poured out the entire time in Seward. Bad luck. I am disabled and had to stand because people that weren’t disabled took the disability seat.
Aug2024· Family
The view was amazing. We travelled with our10 year old. It was 8:50 pm and dinner was still unavailable. There were no food options for children. My child has food restrictions, but the conductor Vern was so rude that the whole car was shocked with his behavior toward a 10-year-old child.

The text from my son said it all: “Dad, there’s an article you were born to write that the world is finally ready for: Bring back the handkerchief!” For me, the handkerchief never left.
My mother raised me with several fixed rules. One was that a gentleman always has a clean handkerchief in his right back pocket, a piece of simple cotton, roughly 15 inches square and less than four inches when folded. I was a dutiful son, but I can recall being a ten-year-old on the school playground, feeling the hankie directly over my butt (屁股) and wondering what it was there for. Time would tell.
Every night for most of my life, I remove from my trousers the items I’m going to need the next day — keys, wallet and hankie, if it’s still unused. After 60 years, my body weight feels wrong if I’m heading out of the house with an empty back pocket.
I am sure this habit has sometimes shocked friends and colleagues who’ve noticed it as a little quaint, but in polite company nobody comments on somebody else’s business. That rule of behaviour, of course, did not apply to one’s children in the late20th century. When my three kids were growing up, they all let me know whenever they could that my hankie was as ridiculously old-fashioned as a top hat and a walking stick. They had their arguments. If you have to be prepared every day for a cold, why not choose a little packet of tissues.
Point taken — especially in the time of pandemic. But a cotton handkerchief is a lot more durable than tissues, creates no waste, and has a far wider variety of uses. Can you grab the handle of a pot that’s boiling over with a tissue? Or do you recall the cases of skinned knees and runny noses that hankie wiped? In fact, for Father’s Day last year my wife gave me several new handkerchiefs. And by now, neither of us can count the number of times her eyes have welled up at a movie, or, as happens, she’s needed to blow her nose.
Yet not even my mother could have expected the hankie’s new role as an Essential Public Health Appliance. All of us have learnt how hard it is to follow advice from medical experts about not touching your face. Here is an answer. Use your hankie. In case of emergency, your handkerchief can become a DIY mask that can be pulled over your lower face like a robber entering a bank.
So, my son has it right: Bring back the handkerchief. It may actually save a few lives.
4. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the author?
A. He is born to be a writer.
B. His mother expects him to become a real gentleman.
C. He is an expert in making a DIY mask using handkerchiefs.
D. His family have a habit of using handkerchiefs except his wife.
5. What does the underlined word “quaint” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Shallow. B. Outdated. C. Popular. D. Healthy.
6. What do the younger generation think of the handkerchiefs?
A. They are cool and fashionable.
B. They are not convenient to use.
C. They only come in handy during special times.
D. They will be taken over by tissues sooner or later.
7. What is the tone of the author in the passage?
A. Serious. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Humorous.

Hollywood may have warned about the risks of building up relationships with artificial intelligence (AI), but one computer scientist says we may be missing a trick if we do not accept the positives that human-machine relationships have to offer.
Tony Prescott, professor of robotics at the University of Sheffield, argues that AI has an important role to play in preventing human loneliness. Just as we develop meaningful relationships with pets, and have no doubt about children playing with dolls, so we should be open to the value of AI to adults , he says.
“Human loneliness is often described as à cycle in which loneliness leads to lower self-worth, which discourages further communication with people,” Prescott writes in a new book The Psychology of Artificial Intelligence. “There may be ways in which AI companionship could help break it by strengthening feelings of self-worth and helping maintain or improve social skills. If so, relationships with AIs could support people to find companionship with human and artificial others.”
With more than a third of Americans reporting “serious loneliness” the loneliness problem has become clear in recent years. Whether AI can, or should, be part of the solution is not a new debate. Sherry Turkle. professor of social science at MIT, has warned that forming relationships with machines could backfire (事与愿违), and lead people to have fewer secure and satisfying human relationships.
Murali Doraiswamy, professor of medicine at Duke University, said: “Right now, all the evidence points to having a close human friend as the best solution to loneliness. But until society put social connectedness on top of the list, robots are a solution for the millions of people who have no friends.”
Researchers may soon know whether people turn to AI for company. Tech firms are building chatbots to be ever more responsive to emotions. This week, OpenAI asked
Scarlett Johansson to be the voice of their latest chatbot, GPT-4o, to “help consumers to feel comfortable”. Johansson refused, but the chatbot came onto the market with a voice that friends and family thought was hers.
8. Why are the pets and dolls mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To show the meaningful relationship between Al and children.×
B. To stress the limitations of human-AI relationships in daily life.
C. To display the potential for AI to provide similar companionship.
D. To suggest the possibility for AI to replace traditional companions.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The continued failure of human relationships with AI.
B. The repeated use of AI and others for companionship.
C. The process of developing human self-worth and social skills.
D. The pattern of loneliness, lower self-worth and further loneliness.
10. Who expressed concern that AI companionship could weaken human connections?
A. Tony Prescott. B. Sherry Turkle.
C. Murali Doraiswamy. D. Scarlett Johansson.
11. Which question does the passage mainly focus on?
A. Could AI contribute to increased loneliness?
B. Will AI companionship replace human interaction?
C. Can AI be used as an effective solution to loneliness?
D. Is AI companionship better than traditional relationships?
D
If a stranger knocked on your door asking for using your phone, would you help? How about lending them five dollars for the bus, if they said they’d return and pay you back?
Nowadays, many people find it hard to trust strangers. A recent study found that our ability to trust strangers may be more than just a social or psychological characteristic - it could be rooted in our DNA. This is important, as it turns out that trusting people might actually live longer and healthier lives compared to more skeptical (怀疑的) people.
Two main theories have appeared to explain why some people are more trusting than others. One suggests trust is a stable characteristic shaped by early life experiences. The other thinks it’s influenced by a person’s ongoing evaluation of the social environment. We can easily imagine that the answer to the question “Would you say that most people can be trusted?” would depend on whether you’d been robbed the day before or if you’d had your missing wallet returned.
This is where the recent research comes in. A professor of Lund University, Edgerton and his coworkers have been doing research about trust. In their most recent study, involving 33, 882 Danish blood donors, they found a single gene (基因) - PLPP4, strongly associated with the personality of trusting others, and that the PLPNP4 gene explained 6% of the difference in social trust within the study population. If you take two people who have similar education and life experiences, this gene alone could account for 6% of the difference in how much they trust others.
They believe that the PLPP4 gene may somehow soften our “fight-or-flight” survival response. If our fight-or-flight system is less strong when we meet new people, it makes sense that trusting others could have huge health benefits. Indeed, if trusting others acts as something against stress, it may lower the risk of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease.
As people continue to uncover the mysteries of trust, one thing is clear: understanding its genetic roots may hold the key to developing healthier communities in the world.
12. What might affect people’s trust levels according to the two main theories?
A. Childhood habits. B. Personal abilities.
C. Social experiences. D. Communication skills.
13. What does the recent study focus on?
A. The mental cause of trust. B. The ways to develop survival ability.
C. The characteristics of different genes. D. The connection between trust and a gene.
14. What does the passage say about trusting others?
A. It could bring health benefits. B. It reduces the strong stress in work.
C. It helps to develop the world faster. D. It causes quicker survival response.
15. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. A Gene Influences How Trusting You Are B. Experiences Make You Grow Dependable
C. A Link Between Biology and Social Science D. Theories That Explain Why You Are Trusted

Life isn’t fair. Some people just seem to have the ability to effortlessly charm anyone they meet. Well, it might seem like a magical power, but in fact there are a number of factors at work. ___16___The answer is: to a large degree, yes you can.
But first, the bad news. People first judge each other based simply on physical appearance, With just a look of a face, people make quick judgments about each other’s likeability, trustworthiness and confidence. How should we deal with this? ___17___People view a smiling face as more trustworthy, warmer and sociable. It sounds like common sense, doesn’t it? Smile and others will smile with you.
What other tricks might we have? ___18___ As a result, three things we can do to signal that we are not a threat(威胁) are to: raise our eyebrows quickly, lift our heads slightly, and once again, to smile.
So, we’ve looked at body language, but of course what you say is hugely important too, unless you want to just stand there smiling foolishly. The golden rule of friendship is that if you make people feel good about themselves, they’ re going to like you. In other words, you should not talk about yourself or your wonderful achievements. ___19___
Finally, finding common ground is good to form a connection. Charming people are particularly skilled at seeking out shared interests or experiences to connect with others. Simple things like asking where someone’s from really can open up a discussion and allow you to find areas in common. And if all else fails, you can fall back on that most British of topics: the weather. ___20___
A. There’s one simple tool: your smile.
B. It can be a nice start of a conversation.
C. Instead, you need to show interest in them.
D. So, can you learn to develop superhuman charm?
E. What good tricks can we use to become charming?

Great views from train.
Train was very uncomfortable. No charging ports for phones & pads! It poured out the entire time in Seward. Bad luck. I am disabled and had to stand because people that weren’t disabled took the disability seat.

But a cotton handkerchief is a lot more durable than tissues creates no waste, and has a far wider variety of uses.
A. Serious. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Humorous.
【答案】4. B 5. B 6. D 7. D

With more than a third of Americans reporting “serious loneliness”, the loneliness problem has become clear in recent years.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11. C

【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. A

Life isn’t fair. Some people just seem to have the ability to effortlessly charm anyone they meet. Well, it might seem like a magical power, but in fact there are a number of factors at work. ___16___The answer is: to a large degree, yes you can.
But first, the bad news. Finally, finding common ground is good to form a connection. Charming people are particularly skilled at seeking out shared interests or experiences to connect with others. And if all else fails, you can fall back on that most British of topics: the weather. ___20___
A. There’s one simple tool: your smile.
B. It can be a nice start of a conversation.
C. Instead, you need to show interest in them.
