Remember your first ever day of school: how you straightened out your school clothes, made sure your mom prepared your favorite lunch and your backpack? Do you remember your first backpack? Mine was red with Mickey Mouse and it carried all of my primary school books. Years later, I still remember it as a sign of happy school days and childhood. Unluckily, years fly by and it’s time for exams and preparing for college. But some seniors find a fun way to hold onto childhood a little longer by wearing childish backpacks to school. A few commentators note that this trend isn’t new, and a lot of seniors have been wearing childish backpacks for years. Only in recent years has this become a trend.
The senior backpack trend brought back a good feeling of longing for simpler days. Back in kindergarten, whoever had the same sweater or same shoes would become best friends. Now, years later, seeing someone wearing a backpack with the same cartoon characters is bringing that feeling back to us.

“Alexa, turn on the lights.”
Consumers (消费者) like the idea that a simple voice command (命令) like this can make their home a place of simplicity, where having a simple conversation with a human-like personal assistant such as Amazon’s Alexa, completes small tasks like turning on the lights, changing the temperature, or checking the weather.
While a number of voice-activated smart home systems have proved to be popular with consumers, the introduction of hands-free gesture (手势) control systems presents a different option for homeowners.
Chicago-based Fibaro offers the Fibaro Swipe, a wireless gesture control pad that performs tasks and controls smart home devices with the wave of a hand. The device recognizes six gestures — up, down, left, right, circle to the left, and circle to the right, or can be programmed with more complex sequences (序列).
“We developed Swipe to offer an entirely new way of interacting with technology in the home,” said Rich Bira, managing director of Fibaro USA. “Smart home consumers no longer have to worry about having their smartphone beside them at home to control their devices and ‘scenes’— Swipe will deliver a no-touch access point to control them all.”
A similar product, Bixi, is also making its way into the homes of consumers. It’s the first able (便携式的) hand-gesture recognition device from France-based technology startup Biuemint Labs. It connects to phones, pads and smart home devices through Bluetooth and recognizes gestures for contact-less use. If your hands are dirty from cooking but you need to scroll (滚动) down to see the rest of a recipe (菜谱), Bixi will recognize the hand gestures to perform the action for you.
“We’ve created Bixi to remove the inconvenience of having to physically interact with a touch screen, removing the need to touch or even be in front of your device,” says Vijayaraghavan Narayanan, founder and CEO of Bluemint Labs.
Will gesture-controlled smart home control systems outperform those that are voice-activated? Let’s wait and see.
5. Why does the author mention Alexa at the beginning?
A. To introduce a new smart home device.
B. To stress the need for voice-activated systems.
C. To lead up to a discussion on hands-free devices.
D. To encourage consumers to use voice commands.
6. How does the author support the idea presented in paragraph 3?
A. By giving examples. B. By analyzing causes.
C. By stating arguments. D. By making comparisons.
7. What problem does Bixi aim to solve?
A. Smartphone connection. B. Trouble with touch screens.
C. Problems of movement recognition. D. Difficulty in programming different gestures.
8. What is the best title for the text?
A. Are Voice-Activated Smart Homes on the Rise?
B. Fibaro Swipe: A New Age in Smart Home Interaction
C. Are Gesture-Control Devices the Next Big Thing in Home Tech?
D. Bluem int Labs: The Answer to Touch-Free Interaction with Smart Devices

There are over 6, 000 languages spoken in the world. But did you know that some of them are in danger of dying out? From Dusner (three speakers) to Kelabit (five thousand), these languages are spread all over the world, but they all have one thing in common: unless we act soon, they could become extinct (灭绝的).
Researchers at Oxford University are studying these languages. And Dr. Johanneke Sytsema, who has organized a popular seminar (研讨会) on endangered languages, thinks there could be a magic bullet for keeping minority (少数的) languages alive: social media. “Social media could help save language,” Dr. Sytsema says. “Because young people text each other in the same way they speak, even if they don’t know how to spell it.”
Minority languages are often at risk of being drowned out (压过) by the louder voices of the bigger languages, which are spoken at school and in the media. But, with social media giving control to the users, the popularity of social media like TikTok might just have the opposite effect.
Dr. Sytsem a has first-hand experience: she speaks Frisian. Frisian, spoken in a province in the Netherlands called Friesland, has 350, 000 speakers. Using her own language has given Dr. Sytsema food for thought about how languages could be saved in the future. “In Friesland, young people who don’t learn much Frisian writing at school send each other messages on social media in Frisian,” she says. In this way, a new generation of Frisian speakers keeps the language alive.
According to Dr. Sytsema, our languages, like our wildlife, are natural creations. “Natural beauty needs to be protected. Once languages die, you don’t get them back, because they’ve grown over thousands and thousands of years,” Dr. Sytsem a explains. “Every language has its own beauty. And that’s why it’s so important.”
9. Why does the author mention Dusner and Kelabit?
A. To describe the richness of human language.
B. To discuss the influence of language on culture.
C. To explain the importance of cultural exchange.
D. To show the serious situation of endangered languages.
10. What do the underlined words “a magic bullet” mean in paragraph 2?
A. A challenging task. B. An effective solution.
C. An open standard. D. A common goal.
11. What gave Dr. Sytsema the idea of language protection?
A. Teaching at a language school. B. The popularity of Frisian on TikTok.
C. Her personal experience with Frisian. D. Working with young people in Friesland.
12. What message does Dr. Sytsema want to give us in the last paragraph?
A. A language is well worth saving.
B. Society is shaping human language.
C. The extinction of languages can be avoided.
D. The young hold the key to language protection.

As early as middle school I knew that I wanted to be a writer when I grew up. Instead, I became a teacher, and seven years into my teaching career at a small school in West Seattle, I finally decided to give up my writing dream.
It didn’t mean I stopped writing altogether, but it meant giving up on my first novel. Then one spring, four years later, my seventh graders and I had the chance to meet bestselling author Jamie Ford. After hearing his advice about writing prize-winning stories, I revisited my old dream.
I created a novel-writing project the following September when my seventh-grade students became my eighth-graders. Each week, during language arts class, my students spent an hour writing stories. During that hour, I told them that I, their teacher, would be doing the same homework. They were excited to have me working alongside them. Little did they know that I usually spent that hour writing emails to parents, planning the next day’s lessons, and grading papers.
During a story-writing period, a student called Kellen came up to me with a question about his book and caught me doing teacher work. He called me out. “Hey! You’re not writing!” he said, both excited and disappointed he’d caught the teacher off task.
I admitted (承认) it and got back to my novel. All was well until he caught me a second time during a different story writing period. Again I had no excuse. I went back to work, and this time I wrote wholeheartedly, truly working on my novel.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150个左右;
2. 续写部分分两段,每段开头已为你写好。
Then it hit me that I needed someone to push me to write. Why not Kellen?

Unluckily, years fly by and it’s time for exams and preparing for college.

根据最后一段“Back in kindergarten, whoever had the same sweater or same shoes would become best friends. Now, years later, seeing someone wearing a backpack with the same cartoon characters is bringing that feeling back to us. (回到幼儿园时,拥有相同毛衣或相同鞋子的人将成为最好的朋友。现在,多年后,看到有人背着同样卡通人物的背包,那种感觉又回到了我们心中。)”可知,在幼儿园时,谁和自己有相同的毛衣或鞋子就会成为好朋友,现在看到有人背着有相同卡通人物的背包又把那种感觉带回来了,这里的that feeling指的是因为有相同物品而产生的亲近感,故选B项。

A To describe the richness of human language.
【答案】9. D 10. B 11. C 12. A

59. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Again, I had no excuse. I went back to work, and this time I wrote wholeheartedly, truly working on my novel.

1. 所续写短文的词数应为150个左右;

Then it hit me that I needed someone to push me to write. Why not Kellen?

One afternoon, Kellen asked me whether I want to submit (提交) my novel for a competition.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Possible version:
Then it hit me that I needed someone to push me to write. Why not Kellen? I approached Kellen the next day with a position. “Kellen, would you be interested in being my writing partner? You can help keep me on track, and in return, I’ll give you extra help with your writing.” His eyes lit up with surprise and excitement. “Really, I’d love that!” From then on, during our writing hour every week, we would sit together, our heads bent over our respective notebooks. Kellen would offer his own ideas and suggestions, while I would help him revise his sentences and develop his passages.
One afternoon Kellen asked me whether I want to submit (提交) my novel for a competition. The question caught me off (让我措手不及). “Do you really think it’s good enough?” I asked. “Absolutely,” Kellen replied without hesitation. “It’s the best story I’ve ever read. You are sure to win!” With his encouragement, I decided to give it a shot. We spent every spare moment polishing each sentence and refining the plot before submitting my work. Finally, With Kellen’s honest feedback and support, I got the first prize in our city novel competition. The prize wasn’t just about fulfilling a dream, but about finding the right partner to help navigate the journey.
